When I was growing up christian, I always assumed "happy holidays" was the catch all for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years.
@katattack907

Right! "Happy Holidays" covers all your bases in case the person you're talking to celebrates Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Yule, or something else but it's not anti-christian. Even christians celebrate New Year's.
@neoqwerty
@neoqwerty 2 года назад
It is. It's at least covering Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and New Year itself. Given that Thanksgiving isn't as standard as the other four, that much varies. If they want to talk about a war on christmas, the only legitimacy they really have is in French language, that I know of, where we say "Happy Celebrations!" ("Joyeuses Fetes", and "Fete" means birthday, anniversary, and party at once.) and this time is the "time of celebrations" ("temps des fetes").

Happy Holidays being perceived as anti-Christian is fairly recent propaganda. The majority of people in America celebrate Christmas. Even I do and I have been atheist or agnostic identifying for almost as long as I can remember. It’s such a ridiculous notion that it’s under attack.

I never understood the “war on Christmas” thing. Literally no one cares if you say Merry Christmas, the reason that companies and some individuals prefer “Happy Holidays” is because it INCLUDES all of the other winter holidays, which means Christmas as well. This is just another tantrum that conservative Christians throw when they no longer have the entire stage to themselves. To the privileged, inclusion can seem like oppression.

I do not think I have ever heard about someone being offended by Merry Christmas. I say Merry Christmas and I have said it for 10 years and have said it thousands of times. Probably around 150 times a day for 25 days for the past 12 years... nobody is offended.

When the mythical "War on Christmas" has been mentioned by some American wingnut on the social media I use, my response is to cite the one group which actually _did_ outlaw Christmas: those godly, founding heroes of the USA, the Pilgrims. Contrary to what Americans are taught in primary school, the Puritans were a bunch of narrow-minded, joy-hating, religious fanatics. Christmas was just another working day in the Plymouth Colony. The Massachusetts Bay Colony went further and made Christmas celebrations illegal. As far as the Puritans were concerned, there was nothing Biblical about Christmas, and they were well aware that the religious aspects of Christmas were nothing more than a veneer of Christianity overlaid on ancient pagan winter solstice celebrations.

It's very liberating to come out of rhe atheist/agnostic closet to your religious family. It hurt a little bit, but I got fed up at age 32 and straight up burned out "yeah I don't really know if there is a god." I could hear the pain and bargaining in his voice. Because at the end of the day. I truly think my dad loves me so much but suffers from the fear of hell. He eventually stopped including most religious motto's in cards or voice-mail. So I think my mom eventually told him to knock it off. I heard through my gf of 5 years that she thinks mother told my dad to basically stop with the religious pressure on your son. Because she just wants to be apart of my life. My gf is bisexual. And I was just apart of my two lesbian friends wedding in September. If there is any kind of homophobic inuendos to ever come our of my farhers house, then I'm done for good. However, I don't think I've felt this relieved in a long time. We've banned all toxic family members from the Christmas period. Its actually fun these times! And we now have a few family members celebrating Christmas with us instead of their own families simply because of how much more relaxed it is. And instead we have some close friends and neighbours over. Family is what you make it, and cutting the toxic ones out of our lives has been an overall improvement. And if they ever need help, they can always come and ask and we'll be there to help them. But thats it.

In Germany, people don't really seem to care to much about whether you say Merry Christmas or not. (At least in my region). Maybe that's something to do with the fact that in German, "Christ" isn't even in "Christmas"? It's "Weihnachten", which would literally translate to "holy night". I'm an atheist who doesn't celebrate/care for Christmas, and I really don't care about people wishing me a Merry Christmas. Or bless me or whatever. Where Iive we use the word "Jul" so basically the same word as the vikings used, which supposedly is pronounced more like "Jol". And that is the word basically everyone use. I am not religious and neither is my family, and we celebrate. But we don't celebrate christmas, we celebrate the mid winter, and that the sun is turning and that the days will start to grow lighter again. Which is very nice given where we live and the fact that the winter is super dark here. It's also nice to have an excuse to meet family and friends to eat good food and such. I'm not saying that you need to change anything about how you spend the month of december, but there are ways to celebrate and meet family or friends, or reasons to celebrate that has nothing to do with christianity. After all they stole the entire holiday to begin with.

I was struck by that too. I haven't yet worked out the psychological mechanism, but it's obvious that they're triggered by kids being encouraged to believe in a supernatural being who patently does not exist. I suspect cognitive dissonance comes into it somewhere, and this is a coping mechanism. Deep down, many - probably most - of these scammers/preachers have to know that they're spouting utter drivel. Maybe going through the absurd motions of denying the existence of a very obviously fictional supernatural being makes it easier for them to justify the existence of the supernatural being they're desperately trying to believe in? I don't know. It's very weird. I wonder if they also stand on their stage and rant about the nonexistence of the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy.

I don't hate Christmas. I hate how many people choose to celebrate it, and I hate how commercialized it's become, but I still like the _idea_ of Christmas, or at least what it means to me. I like the aesthetic of the decorations, I like the food traditions, I like all of the Christmas lights on people's houses. I LOVED being off of school for nearly 2 weeks. I used to like the gathering of family, but as an adult this aspect of the holiday has soured significantly for me. I won't be attending my family's Christmas this year because they live too far away, and that's a bit of a relief, because my least favorite part of Christmas has become the stressful interactions with extended family. My roommate and I are going to trip balls all day on Christmas and watch Christmas movies, which will help me recapture that magical feeling Christmas used to give me as a kid. Thinking back about everything I liked about Christmas, the presents were just icing on the cake. Every year around the start of December, the decorations would start going up around the house. My mom would start to play our traditional Christmas mix tape with all the familiar classics on it. We'd start doing the advent calendars. I hated having to sacrifice a whole afternoon to decorate the tree, but it was fun to unpack the various ornaments from their boxes; they all had memories attached and were like old friends. Such as the wax gingerbread man that smelled like freshly baked cookies and vanilla that forever has tooth marks, because as a small child it smelled so good I wanted to taste it. Closer to Christmas, family would start to arrive and pack the house for a few days. For a few days out of the year, the house was full of life. Christmas gave me a feeling like sitting by a cozy fire in a cabin high in the Alps, snowed in by a blizzard, but there's plenty of food, entertainment, and good company.

You had no say in the family you were born into and you have no control over the people they now are or what they do or say. For most of us, the choice is between either figuring out how to deal with the shitty people in our families, or deciding that it's best for everyone if we either slash those ties in some dramatic act or let them wither through neglect. It's a crap time of year to be alone, since there's so much BS coming from all directions about happy, shiny families enjoying joyful times around the Christmas tree and sitting down in harmony at the family Christmas feast. I find it funny that Christmas is the hill they want to die on. I’m an atheist and I’ve always been an atheist as have my parents and we have always celebrated Christmas. I am more justified in celebrating it than most Christians considering almost everything about Christmas from gift giving to Christmas trees to Santa Claus and his elves, are pagan. Even Christian bible scholars agree Jesus wasn’t born on December 25th. It seems pretty insulting to celebrate your savior on a pagan holiday. Then again the Bible makes no indication that birthdays should be celebrated so the fixation on the birthday of Jesus itself is a bit weird. I could point out that Christmas being a Christian thing was a deliberate fabrication of the Catholic Church to convert pagan Europe, and how strange it is that Protestants who legendarily hate Catholics would hold onto that holiday when they quickly discarded most of the other catholic holidays. I just don’t understand the mental gymnastics that lead you to believe Christmas is inherently Christian when it seems like more than anyone Christians should be waging war on Christmas as it is corrupting their religion with pagan rituals.

Wishing "Happy Holidays" is a sure sign of the apocalypse? Man, these guys would freak out here in Germany... Everyone says "Happy Holidays" (Frohe Feiertage) - and not for any political correct reason: You got three Christmas days as holidays (24.12. - 26.12) were we celebrate with the close and wider family and the greeting also includes New Years. Because you usually do not see most of you colleagues or school mates till the next year. So who would bother saying: "Happy Christmas Eve, First Christmas Day, Second Christmas Day and New Years!"?
@n.h.moreno
@n.h.moreno 2 года назад
Well, here in America, we make up reasons to be angry at gays, blacks, mexicans, brown people and poor people. So, if we want to take a generic greeting or farewell and twist it to fit a narrative to discredit and demonize our political or social enemies---we are going to do that, because God gave us the land we took!

As an introvert, being raised in a family of extroverts and in school systems that felt if you were a natural introvert, then something was wrong with you, it was pure Hell. I find most of my waking adult life is spent trying to actively avoid suspect, or outright extroverts, but it's worth it, because the peace is unsurmountable. What's "boring" to an extrovert is Heaven to me and the people I hang around. If I must deal with them, it's short and sweet. ONE extrovert in my life is more than enough, that's how draining they are to me. In fact, 95% of my life's problems have *ALWAYS* been linked to an extrovert or a group of them and their antics. It's actually kind of surreal. Like WHY is it like that? Is it them? Is it me? They leave me wanting to pull my hair out, yet I want to get them hell away from most of them, I make them want to pull their hair out, because I won't cooperate with their extrovert schedule planner, yet they still want to hang out with me, because hey, I'm still a "body" they can talk at at least and there are some things about me they'd like to utilize as a public event. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. No thanks.

Japan's honestly the reason why I stopped celebrating Christmas as a Big Deal and campaigned with my family to move the Big Deal to the New Year, successfully I might add! I'm from Quebec, we have a HUGE folkloric tradition around New Year and mixing that with just celebrating New Year as the big winter celebration made things a lot better. @neowild
@neowild 2 года назад
@@lifeontheledgerlines8394 No, it's more like when a concept becomes taboo it is often an object of more desire. When something has been so disallowed that brining up the concept causes it to be hushed away the kids want all the more to know why that is the case. Sometimes it could be pursued in spite if the relationship between parent and child is rocky enough but mostly it's just a desire to see what this taboo thing is. This phenonimon is seen with things like drugs where parents forbid the mention of drugs and then when kids encounter it outside of the home they are drawn to it out of curiosity and then become drug addicts. Similarily not all homosexuality comes from birth. A kid could stumble upon such a taboo and decide to explore it and choose it because to becomes what they know, especially in an era where we are telling kids that this kind of thing is what they should form their entire identity around and being anything but straight is something special that they will receive praise and adoration for.

Santa is an extraterrestrial who lives on Jupiter's ice moon Europa and uses space bending warp technology (like in Star Trek!) in order to travel the entire earth in 24 hours. The reason why we have the tradition of describing Santa as living in the North Pole is that's his landing zone. It was honestly really cool and made me think about a lot of things. Lots of how my family's theories about Santa came from my sister and I. The two of us were wondering if it would be possible for the myth's of Santa to be possible, so my parents helped us research different ways to move faster than light, different locations Santa could be from without us knowing about it. It was very fun and educational. We would also watch Norad tracks Santa every year.
