@Youthman This is exactly why I cannot commit to a dedicated theater room, I have a 7.4.4 Multimedia Gaming and theater room in my living room and it's always being used,I have 2 daughters 11 and 12 and my house is where all of their friends see Movies, I don't want to add more circuits to my home for a dedicated home theater that will be occupied once a week and I find that the youth are more interested because adults see money and cost, Home theater is my Hobby and its as simple as watching TV, I have been into Audio since 1977 but into home theater surround sound for 15 years, I would like to thank you and others for making me not feel lonely 😊

Sadly, despite having a Kaleidescape to Trinnov 11.2.4 setup with all Genelec speakers in my dedicated theater, I end up using my TV audio more than anything because that's the TV the wife and kids prefer - in the bedroom, sitting on the ground, winding down before bedtime.

My family cannot fathom why I always go the movies alone, instead of watching them at home. Meanwhile, everytime I watch a movie with them it's constant talking over the movie and have to pause and explain what just happened, since one of them had thier heads buried in their phone.

I don't mind having to watch a movie 🎥🍿 with my family and friends...if they are willing to Watch it with me...but I love watching action movies alone and experiencing the home theater 🎬🍿 sound effects and the excitement of it all .. because some people can be really jealous...because you like to do something you can be very passionate about...even if they are not .. unless you have events at your home to draw friends to watch sport games or two while building a relationship with good people 🎬🍿😎😎😎😎🎥

I have luckily got a few coworkers into HT. It helps to invite people over for a sporting event or a movie night. Seems weird to have a movie night with adults but when they show up, it's always a positive. People start thinking, "can I do this in my basement?" I always say, "absolutely, and I'll help you!"

What you describe works fabulously and is a great way to enjoy "home theater." Like others here, ours is a large, open floor plan room with a large retractable 'scope AT screen and mostly concealed gear rather than a dedicated room. The trick is to be an entertainer, to create an event of sorts for the evening. Invite a group of friends from your social circles for a movie night. Sometimes it might be a themed night such as a Bond or Star Wars night. Sometimes the movie is a surprise that you don't reveal until movie time. Guests love that! Start with a happy hour social time but, as the master of ceremonies, call the guests to their seats at the prescribed time. Describe the benefits unique from the commercial cinema: the movie can be paused for pit stops and refills, etc.. Prepare some behind the scenes/insider info to entertain them as you introduce the movie to them for the night. They love that you've invested some research time for them. Even running a trailer or two is fun. Of course, they get a state of the art technical presentation. And, yes, sometimes you will be approached to help a friend create their own environment. I also don't have a local fellow HT enthusiast, but I just concentrate on enjoying entertaining a few times a year. Your friends will be thrilled to hear when you are having your next one! You won't feel lonely if you are always preparing the next event.

OMG!!!! You’re pouring my feelings all over the floor!!! I have quite a few friends, only 1, that has a lightweight setup in his living room. All my other Buddies basically ask the same question, when they come to my house, what is all this stuff, and why do need it??? My explanation is, I have been an audiophile since I was 10yrs old. My passion has only grown. My personal belief is, home theater is an essential part of my life. I almost detest going to a movie theater. In the L. A. CA. area, it is in all likelihood cheaper, to wait on the film to drop on Blu-ray, than to go see it at a theater. Anyway, thanks for the Channel. Keep on keeping. 😎

Lonely? Darn straight lonely. Since my wife and son moved out back in October it's just me and the cat here to watch whatever we want to on my very lucky to have bankrupt budget system. Even when they were here I was usually the only one watching unless a brand new Marvel movie came out. I mention my audio hobby to folks and they look at me like I have 3 eyes and an extra arm. Invites to come over for a movie or demo session gets a "Maybe someday". Oh well, all the better for me to enjoy all alone. Just like I'm supposed to be, I guess.

Wow!!! This is SUCH a good thing to talk about!!! I have been feeling this for years. I dont know a single person who even owns a pair of speakers let alone has a surround sound. At beast they have a cheap soundbar with the sub turned all the way down. Ppl JUST DONT GET IT!! Its such a shame!! Btw i live just south of Boston…

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that watching TV or movies is peoples "me time", where the can rest and relax and not have to be obligated to entertain others while doing so.

I have my home theater in my living room and I am alone 100% of time watching a movie, my wife and my kid never like it. That's why I never be able to watch a full movie at one time, maybe only half an hour every time, that's it. Sad 😔.

Six seats normally only use one, my wife will watch occasionally with the comment it’s way too loud. My brother-in-law wonders why anyone would watch a movie more than once. I’m alone, but I don’t care.

I mean.. Watching movies is kind of a lonely activity. You sit there, watch the movie, and go. Public theaters have an entire notice before movies start asking you to be quite. Maybe Facebook groups and message boards can be good for discussing home theaters and setups. If you just want to fill seats, invite your family and friends over to share your space. If you don't have family and friends that you can share the space with build a more intimate space with maybe three or fewer seats. Large gigantic spaces aren't a requirement to enjoy a cool theater experience. This feels more like a sales pitch with a manufactured problem vs an actual problem affecting people. I'm more than fine with connecting with people online to discuss home theater and connecting with family and friends, who maybe couldn't care any less about technical specs, to enjoy the theater with. edit: Ahh... I didn't realize until the end of the video that it actually is a sales pitch for an event. I mean, that's cool, but why not just focus on it being an event vs making it like a personals ad?

Man this video really also hit home with me too I've been doing home theater for 9 years now and I also feel alone. Well not really alone but it's a feeling that you're alone cuz you built this really cool home theater at first everybody comes over you know the first couple of months and then after that it gets kind of dies off and then you're just sitting there by yourself watching movies. My dad enjoys home theater and he was the original person who got me into it. He comes over to my house and asks for a sound demo. It's a blessing. But mostly I use my theater alone. My girlfriend will watch stuff in there with me, but for the most part I'm in there alone, and THAT'S OKAY! Tbh I don't consider home theater a social hobby. The mere act of watching movies is not really a social thing. It's okay to have a hobby that is mostly or just your and enjoy it, there are other times to socialize.

I too watch most stuff alone, friends use excuses like kids or being tired so a lot of times even in a big city like Houston it's effort to get a group over. One of the reasons I went for a living room home theater so no matter what is being watched or who is home there's an elevated experience

Home theatre started for me when I was obsessed with getting one of the early VHS video machines hooked up to my hi-fi, so I could hear it in better sound. It all started when my father put a simultaneous radio broadcast of a concert that was on the TV at the same time, it was amazing and I was hooked . The screen and picture is only one element of home cinema and very easily satisfied with a decent projector and screen size . For most of us It’s all about the sound and the speakers . I’ve been obsessed with sound for years. Nearly all my friends don’t share the same appreciation of good high-quality sound. And that is why we are such a lonely bunch . I cannot watch anything without the system turned on . I think I’ve now found my Nirvana in sound with my Bowers and Wilkins 800 series.

Can be lonely. They don't really care about the details so much but they do enjoy the experience, thankfully. I figure that it's my job to make sure the experience is memorable and enjoyable if I'm going to share it with friends, family and guests. Thank you for this Youthman. Just what I needed. I’ve had a home theater of some kind for about 20 years. My youngest left for college a year and a half ago and we moved to a small condo building with no reasonable option for a theater so it’s all in storage. 😢 For now I manage with a 55" TV and JBL soundbar. I do miss my theater so when I need a fix I go to my local cinema. Funny this topic comes up today as I just went to see The Beekeeper this afternoon and it was a very lonely experience, not only did I go alone but no one else showed up. I had the entire theater to myself. Should have watched it in my boxers, just like at home! ;) I’d very much love to attend MWave this year, we’ll have to see how my schedule shakes out. I feel this fellow viewer's pain...... Its even worse when it comes from within you're family........I go to work and come home, always there to pick the kids up from school, no drugs, no alcohol, no cigarettes, don't spend much $$$ on myself or go out too much, don't frequent bars or the health club( I have a pretty physical job so I get plenty of exercise there, always on my feet ) and I REALLY enjoy watching content and gaming in my basement home theatre....so when your spouse calls you out for trying to upgrade your 14 year old+, mismatched, non-high def. component setup, to 4k/8k AVR in 5.1.2 with MATCHED speakers and doing it by sourcing the items you want ON SALE is totally frustrating. Dont even get me started on the 1000's that get spent on beauty each month....why can't prople just be happy letting people enojoy what they enjoy!

With my current living room setup, it’s typically just me, the wife, and occasionally her parents who live down the street. I have other friends and family but whenever I talk home theater, weightlifting, automotive, astronomy, or Xbox, it’s like I’m speaking Greek to them. This video is so true for many of us. Ironically a couple of hours ago I joined the Home Theaters group on fb and there I found about seven members that live in my town. Now my biggest concern is if I should try to contact them or that would be too awkward. You never know nowadays.

I've been researching and investing in home theater for over a year now. I've learned most concepts through several RU-vid channels, including yours. I've done just about all I can in an open floorplan from Acoustic treatment to Perlisten R series with Klipsch subs. I'm nearing the end of the journey until I upgrade a new TV when budget permits. I only know one other guy in my circle of friend who show movies in their home, so yes, it is a small club. I had not thought about how small our group is until this video. Home theater is similar to a car club, except you don't meet up for road trips. You can still "drive" everything from a pinto to a Formula 1 car, but it sits in your home and the whole family can experience the ride. I got into it when the wife wanted to stay home and enjoy a movie. I appreciate every technical video you post on fine tuning a system. It is a great hobby.

As soon as I saw this video title I felt immediately attached to it and, in fact, this is too lonely most of the times. I live in a small country in Europe and there no much interested people in the Home Theater hobby. I have hundreds of euros invested just for myself :( . I was at Rusty's (I'm the guy in the picture with the VU meter shirt) and can say that it was great to get to hang out with other people who are into home theater because it is kind of lonely. While I have friends who enjoy coming over to watch a movie none of them are really into the hobby. Besides getting to enjoy the demo of Rusty's home theater it was good to hang around and talk to the other guys there. I'm an introvert myself as well but when it came to talking about home theater that made it easier and lots of fun. With that group I've been able to visit other home theaters which has been great. Thanks for helping to get us together!

Yeah, unfortunately, I don't know anyone who has a home theatre. I find it hard to get friends and family to experience it with me. But on the other hand, when people eventually do, they just can't believe how good it is, and you can see their eyes light up.

Having a large enough "bonus room" or building from scratch a dedicated home theater would be awesome. But realistically, I think the large majority of people dont have or can't build either because of finances or just dont have the room. I think showing more multi-task rooms would be great. That would show just how somebody could get a system to work and sound great where the whole family and friends can enjoy it.

Hey Michael, greetings from Germany. I would love to come to MWAVE, but I just can't manage it this year. Perhaps in the near future I will be able to meet you and Ryan in person and really enjoy what the show has to offer. This topic really hits home for me. I've lived in Germany for about 6 years and my German isn't the best. So it's really hard to find people with the home theater hobby around me. One way for home theater to be less lonely is to have a more inclusive theater space. The bat cave may be ideal for video and audio quality, but its not ideal for family and friends. I'm a real estate appraiser, and go into hundreds of houses every year. Dedicated HT had a time in high end houses, but has gone away in newer construction. The hybrid theater space my be less ideal quality wise, but used far more. I just built my own custom forever home, and absolutely love my theater/dining/kitchen space. And larger groups can all enjoy. My new 100" Hisense U8K, was the last piece of my inclusive, hybrid theater. I think this is the way to go for most. Love the channel!

Oh yeah. I'm in the same spot. I lived in NY for about a decade and was very lucky to find a job where my boss and another coworker were into home theater. I was able to buy some of their used equipment at a really good price and it started me on this HT journey. Recently I moved and no one I work with now that I've met so far is into audio or HT stuff. One of the best parts about knowing other people who are into this is being able to trade gear or buy stuff that they don't need. I gotta find some people in my area. It's nice to bounce ideas off of other people, visit them and see their setups, buy their used gear. That was really nice. But it's hard to find them. Footnote, I work in IT, so it's probably more popular in our circles to have an interest in audio or HT gear. Maybe I need to just build a social media platform for audiophiles so other people can connect.

Every passive hobby can be lonely. That's why I love home theater, but a well-designed TV room can be even more fun because you can have other people interacting more in a bright room with games, tv shows and even lighter movies.

i always had a HT in my basement , but only had a 65" tv and my wife and kids never liked watching movies in my HT until i got a projector and a 106" screen .. i know 106" is not huge huge but it was big enough to bring them down and now we watch movies at least once a week as a family because that big screen made it immersive .

Fortunately our family loves the outdoors and also movies! We stopped going out to commercial movie theaters because of too many obnoxious people! I love the fact that you can have a great multi media room for very reasonable prices!

Brother I feel you. I have a Yamaha Aventage 5 2.4 system. I called my local HT stores around me to try to get someone to calibrate beyond ypao. Noone would do it. I had one place say they don't work on Yamahas. Every time I see REW or mini-dsp, I get very nervous about it. None of family or friends are really into it. My gf starting getting into only because it was the living room lol.

I use to go to CES regularly back in the 90's and was at CES with Dayton Audio in 2013 but other than that I haven't been to any audio/video show in a long time.

When Americans who speak the same language as in most films struggle to fill the seats in their home theaters then what can we the rest of the world say? I live in a smaller European country and my first barrier is to find someone who speaks English enough to watch a movie, mostly it fails here because they want to watch the local dub which is disrespectful to the actual actors in the movie but it's a different thing how I feel about movie dubbing. Anyways, it is really hard to get people here and quite shocked that even in the US where Home Theater is a more popular thing, at least based on AVS but apparently it's challenging to gather people there as well. Thanks for this video, really surprised me that it's such a niche hobby there as well

I’m just going to turn my living room into a modern home theater. Getting a sony 85’ with Dolby Vision, and likely getting the sony quad home theater speakers 🔊 for amazing still great sound and Atmos. Family and friends will enjoy more so than not.

I don't know anybody locally either really. I live in a neighborhood with big homes so many of my neighbors have home theaters, but their equipment is old and they barely use it. They couldn't even describe their gear. Even my wife won't sit by me in our theater during movies because my MLP is too close to her, and that's only 11 feet from a 131 inch screen. She sits in the second row against the wall. 😅

I have been into home cinema for around 20 year's. It's the same in the uk, I find myse on RU-vid regularly watching people like yourself Michael who share the passion. My wife likes to watch movie's but doesn't get as excited as myself when checking out new gear!!😂 It's definitely a lonely hobby but one I will never give up on! With this episode, I have decided to ask my brothers if they want to venture out to MWAVE this June (we all live in different states). We take a "guys trip" every year or so, and were looking for ideas - this is perf👌🏼. iii. Not unlike prog metal, this appears to be a primarily male-dominated interest😂. Any theories as to why that is, and whether/how we might encourage more female participation??

I have a small home theater 4 ceiling dolby atmos speaker set up in my basement 5.2.4 looks awesome and sounds awesome and yeah I have a good friend that makes fun of my speakers doesn't understand why I love the home theater set up and Dolby atmos yeah I'm by myself also my wife and kids barely enjoy it with me I'm always alone just me and my dog lol regardless I love it and very much enjoy it when I can !
