I guess it depends on what the chair represents to him. Everything in Homelander's life has been meticulously planned out. He's the most powerful person in the world and he can't even flex a muscle without a majority vote from the board, shareholders and Edger. That chair (being the superficial leader of the 7) was the only piece of real power he had.

The title is misleading. Homelander was not demoted. Starlight was to be his co-captain but he is still the leader of the team. He set most stages where starlight couldn't change anything

Homelander simply does not look to share attention, even less with someone like her and it's less the title than that she is more adored by people than him and that the company pretty much makes it official, while overall she can pretty much do shit. A bit energy stuff and that's it. It's overall not like a comparison between humans were both are somehow compareable. There are worlds regarding power and by that usefullness between those two. What I dislike about the show is, how it's trying so hard to throw shit into Homelander's face and make him go crazy. No one even TRIES to make him a better person - what overall would be pretty easy, because hell does he just want to be loved - else he would have just murdered the whole company already.

At 3:00, when Edgar brings the second chair over so there are two head chairs it is clearly higher than the other one, but shortly after they are shown at the same level. One could say it is a continuity error, but I'll say it is to raise the question of who would really be the lead in the inevitable power dynamic of co-captaincy. Are they evenly matched, is one higher than the other (Captain and Co-captain), whose chair is whose? Of course, I can't help but think of a call-back to Jim being promoted to co-manager with Michael Scott.

Edgar never had any dominance over Homelander. He could have killed Edgar at any time and it would have been covered up. Everyone Homelander has ever met backstage has seen him as a threat, and he knows it, the higher heart rate, adrenaline and whatever. He doesn’t experience that with neither Butcher nor Edgar. For that he respects them. Additionally, Edgar is the CEO of Vought. For Edgar to say Homelander is doing a good job, would mean Homelander would be doing a REALLY good job. The sort of approval, Homelander has never gotten. Very cool dynamic, gives Edgar as he calls it himself “true power”.

You’re correct, but one way to look at it is… from Homelander’s perspective, he now has to share leadership decisions with Starlight rather than making his own. To him, he now has less “power” than he originally had.
