I'm a northern Mexican from Monterrey and I think she made some good tortillas. Many Mexicans from the south of Mexico and central Mexico say that the real tortilla is from corn, but for the Mexicans from the north the real tortilla is flour tortilla it have better taste and the best tacos are with flour tortillas. Flour tortillas is our cultural dish from the north of Mexico and South of the USA and we need to love our culture and preserve it.

In Mexico we don't use baking powder or bacon grase. We only use vegetable shortening for flour tortillas. Also we cook then in a comal, which is a flat piece of sheet metal that fits over two of the stove's burners. When they're ready put some butter and salt straight out of the comal, just great! They also work with butter and your favorite fruit jam!!

Very good! 10/10. I've got a few tips. It's not necessary to cover the dough balls in plastic film, they can handle a bit of dryness. However, what you don't want is them forming a dry crust, so you can just sprinkle them with a bit of flour as they rest. Also, when you're rolling them out it's easier to just go in one direction and flip the dough as many times as you need. And if anyone complains they're not perfectly round, we have a saying: "Pa' qué?, si no entran rodando", meaning "Why? They don't enter (your body) rolling"😁

I got tickled with your reply. I gather you are further south than me. Nobody around here talks Mex, unless you were typing Italian. In that case, desculpe. ('Sorry' in portygeese.)... Also south of the bordero goodies were unavailable when I was growing up. Mighta drove 60 miles west to a big town and found a tortilly in the grocery store but I wouldn't guarantee it. Wasn't until much later that the eating joints started popping up. As such making and chewing homemade corn and flour tortillas is all the fun for me here in Alabama. I need all the info I can get including sayings. Ha! (I completely cheat on the round things btw. I CAN make 'em round manually but I cheat and use one of those cast iron round thing makers. Pull that handle down and POOF.... machine tolerance round tortilly every time!)

As a Native New Mexican, this recipe is pretty authentic. I oftentimes will use warm milk and lard instead of Crisco. Bacon fat is also delicious in homemade flour tortillas! Now, all that is needed is some freshly roasted green chile from NM of course, heavenly indeed! !

I will buy ONLY Hatch Green Chili's for my cooking! I'd LOVE to buy about 25# or 50# of them, roast then peel, divide them up into 1 quart and 1 gallon Ziploc baggies, press all the air out then put 'em in the freezer for use the rest of the year! OMG, I cannot wait for the season to come around so I can buy some more! Sadly, it is a couple hundred miles away from Hatch, NM to just drive over and buy that many. Sigh. So I buy what I can from my local supermarket when they are in season. Overnout

My mother made homemade tortillas when I was growing up. They almost never made it to the table, as they are so good right out of the pan. My wife of 30 years was given the recipe and has continued the tradition. Very good video.

A friend told me his sister made her first batch of flour tortillas for the family. They were PERFECTLY round. Everyone was amazed at their roundness. No one had ever seen that. When asked how she did it, she responded she had used the bottom of a 3 lb. coffee can like it was a biscuit cutter.. Also, my mom (from Germany) taught me to let the dough rest for an hour before rolling out and that Snowdrift brand shortening works better than Crisco.

Having been born and raised in southeastern New Mexico I am well familiar with and addicted to good Mexican cuisine. Few things are as good as fresh authentic tortillas. I make my own all the time and everybody is always raving about them. Somebody asked me once, "Why do your tortillas always taste so good." I told 'em, "Because I make them myself - with love." ROFL. For me, the process is therapeutic. I really enjoy getting back to home cooking. Thanks for yet another great video, Kent and Shannon.

A few variations from what my mother-in-law taught me. She never measured anything, so she told me to taste my dry mixture, flour, salt, baking powder. Lard or Crisco, but never bacon grease. She never used quite that much flour on her board, and she didn't flip them while rolling. No grease or spray in the pan, and we cook ours longer. I like mine with black bubbles,or really dark brown, and if you put them into a towel as soon as you pull them, even though they are cooked, they will still stay soft. If you flip a tortilla in a pan with any kind of utensil, other than your fingers, she would frown....lol..I made tortillas at least 3 times a week...good job..☺️. So happy I found this channel. 👍

We are not far from Silver City, NM in a little town called Hatch,NM. I never used a recipe for flour tortillas. I make them by sight thanks to my husbands aunt. I am glad to have a recipe that I can give to people because I have never known how much. They are great when the green chile comes off, a home made tortilla with queso and a chile! I make them on a "comal" I am lucky enough to have my mother-in-laws and I do not need any oil. Also they were missing the hand print! Everyone that I have made, or that have seen made has a hand print from "mashing" out the air bubbles.

I know this video is old but I have to say make them round and perfect you can use a cutter roll them out as big as possible and use a little knife or a large metal bowl or a cake pan more like a spring pan if you want a larger tortilla there’s multiple sizes of spring pans you could cut them with that and use the leftover dough from all of them and make another tortilla just a thought🥰 that’s what my family does

Great video, can't tell you how many Mexican families I've seen use a couple of plywood or some type of wood squares with a hinge on it that their husbands made to press them out, boy they're absolutely fantastic tasting.

I worked at a pizza place in high school and that is what we did is wrapped the dough in plastic wrap and put in the fridge, so we could use through out the day, but by the end of the night we had to through away what we did not use, would not be good after that

Hey you both show a realy easy and fluffy Tortilla. The taste is wonderful. I make it very similar. Id use half of the bright flower and half of cornflower. The taste of corn is perfect to many recipes like Chili con carne texas or colorado style. Thank you for your charming clip. It´s realy awsome and delicious. Thanks a lot.

I love tostadas, but have not had any in a while, but I do believe they are made with corn tortilla's, mom use to keep corn and flour tortilla's in the house all the time, she use to make her tacos with the corn, fry them and shredded potatoes with the taco meat

Wow you guys did an awesome job! And thats coming from a Mexican-American. I watched my grandma and mom make these everyday growing up sometimes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Now my wife makes them pretty often but they aint like grandmas. hehe Grandma also uses Crisco and boy are they soft almost melt in your mouth. If you put them in a tortilla warmer they will get softer and stay soft. Also you dont want them too dry or they will taste like flour. My grandpa has Irish blood on his dads side so yes Irish can make good tortillas. hehe Keep up the great work, love the content!

I had to read watch this I'm never happy with my tortillas, and I had a head start from birth growing up, I remember my auntie's and Grandma making these and the smell... then at age 13 came to live with my white folk foster parents so now I can make American food Mexican food really well. I stayed in touch with my auntie who lived about 30 miles away and she taught me how to make homemade flour tortillas and tamales On another note where are your pancakes? I've searched and cannot find just simple recipe

Awesome, you can't seem to buy good tortillas anywhere so this looks like a winner. My buddy's Mom use to make them for us in Texas when I was a kid so store bought tortillas are hard to live up to. Everything is good with bacon grease! Thank you Kent and Shannon, going to try this on taco night for sure!

My neighbor as a kid would hand make tortillas like yours but she would cook them on a round from and old stove top. She would flip them just using her finger nails. She also would make canned peppers that could ignite tinder.

I like my family to get the tortillas as fresh as possible and so when making tortillas eat after they do. Your recipé and ingredients are better than mine. Something new to try. 😀
