Gardening does not have to be hard. All you have to do is put cardboard or you can use 4-5 sheets of newspaper down on top of your grass. Get some good garden soil from a landscaping company and dump it on top of your paper. Then get some mulch from the landscape company and put that on top of your soil. You’re ready to plant your garden and fertilize. The grass under your cardboard will die and it will draw earthworms, their favorite food is paper. The paper also acts like a sponge in a way to help keep your garden moist. You will need to repeat mulch about every year, but you will rarely have any more weeds or grass to have to pull again. Weed seeds are on and in the soil. If you till, you just bring the weed seeds up to deal with later and plastic doesn’t work. They’ll just grow right through it and then that’s a bigger problem. Cover and forget!

Hi Becky, I have enjoyed your videos for years, a suggestion on getting rid of the grass to build a garden is to cover it with black plastic for several months. This will kill the grass and the root thatch, you will then need to use a tiller to loosen the ground and add compost. I followed this process in east Texas and have had great luck.
@RestorationAcresTN
@RestorationAcresTN 2 года назад
The problem is you also roast any beneficial soil organisms in animals underneath that plastic as well.

A container garden is so much easier and better to control. ☀️❤️☀️
@jeffsilverman105
@jeffsilverman105 2 года назад
Use cardboard directly over the grass and build up from that point. Over time it will decompose and the grass wont make its way through it.
@abbiebarnes2200
@abbiebarnes2200 2 года назад
sounds like Bermuda grass, if it is the roots can go 3 feet deep...says right in any gardening book, it can be controlled but not killed! Evil grass if it is where you dont want it...ask me how i know!

Black plastic is wonderful. But tilling is terrible. It destroys the earthworms plus the soil colonies of fungus and bacteria.

Most pecan trees are alternating bearing trees. Which means they are only capable of producing a dependable crop every other year although may do worse if not properly fertilized etc. 🤔🙂👍

I made the mistake, years ago, of planting a couple if chameleon plants. They are used for ground cover. What a mistake. They grow through anything. All my plants are in containers and those things grow up through the drainage holes. They have a long tap root so when I try pulling them up them go in a bucket of water to make fertilizer. I have learned they are edible so I should never starve. Lol. Laura M.

Great to hear about the update. I was thinking looking at that Rock center-patch and wondered why you didn't build that up with all those tree waste you spoke of. you could make something like a berm or swale Herbaceous garden - maybe even have a pond and some ducks/fish. That will help keep your grass down. If your trees are so old maybe you should plant a few new ones to replace the older ones when they become unproductive or die off.

Becky your homestead is so beautiful I've been watching you since the first day you bought your little battleship LOL kit and put it together. I don't comment very often but I watch you all the time! You are such an inspiration. I also like watching Doug and Stacy living off grid. Having things handy and positioned perfectly in your homestead... I think is definitely key especially as you get older. I'm in my 50s and I need to make sure that as I get older things are conveniently close just in case. You know I was looking at your horse pen and I was thinking it doesn't look like the horses use the entire area and they've already trodden down the grass to dirt . And I was thinking.. I wonder if it would be possible or something you would think about doing is maybe take about just 5 ft or 4 ft of that pen from the end....and do raised beds all along that edge and put a fence high enough so the horses of course could not reach the beds and then on the fence line you have right now mayybe put a door like an entryway if that makes any sense because they've already fertilized that ground and did the hard work for you already in clearing up all that grass. And I have to say Jules is stinking adorable lol! Your chicken coop by the way Becky is the bomb! It is like a chick Palace it's so cute
