The Elantra N is so impressive. My brother in law has a stock 2025 Mustang GT and he lost to a slightly modified Elantra N on a track last weekend. In fact, the Elantra N beat just about everyone on the track that day. It’s such an impressive performance sedan.
Okay, come on guys, this ain't fair at all. Driver experience nothwithstanding, the Type R has way wider tires (275 vs 245)-- that's a huge advantage even before the power mods, suspension mods, etc.. Don't sell yourself or the Elantra N short Sungzilla! Fantastic performance. See the Savage Geese video comparing a stock FL5 type R to a stock Elantra N (both manual) on the same tires, same driver, same track, same day and the lap times are within 1/10 of second of each other.
1.7 second difference and the R was tuned. The N wasn't. The R was on bigger front tires. Think if the N was on a tune with wider tires, it honestly would have won by a 2-3 seconds
@@CB-tx3ul I think spot on. The EN took the FWD record at gridlife for the street class at one of the recent events. It is currently in 2nd place overall... above Porsches and 2 hondas lol. People are still figuring them out/learning about them. Hyundai did something real special.
Where I live here in Ontario, I don't know of or have heard of any such markups on Type Rs. Particularly FK8 gens as most are in the used market ranging from the high 30k to high 40k range in average depending on mileage/condition. So me thinks you're exaggerating abit there.
Great job Sungzilla for representing N community, I know there’s always be fighting between Honda Type R and Hyundai Elantra N, but I wish those cars were closer in terms of modifications. Of course drivers experience comes into play, but good job to both of them 💪🙂
I am thankful to the host for showing what a nearly stock Elantra N can do against a modded one. Type R owner had to fix the cooling to stay in this show. The Elantra N is ready to battle from the showroom, at a cheaper price.
In what world does a tuned car go up against a stock one, and we use it as any kind of credible numbers? Along with experience, placing a huge factor in the times. Even with all that the Elantra N wasn't far off so props to the N.
Dang that was close 1.7 seconds! EN 2.0T 276HP Stock DCT Curb: 3,296lbs Springs Shift Paddles Mounts Wheels 245 Tires CTR 2.0T 306HP Tuned to 325HP MT Curb: 3,117lbs Tune Intake Intercooler Coils Brake pads Lip Radiator Mount Rear Sway Bar Wheels 275 Tires EN driver with less track experience and less time on that track vs CTR driver with more track experience and more time on that track, I love both cars but it would've gotten real close had both had similar mods and driver experience, also just the tune alone 325HP can make a difference, on the EN just adding 5PSI makes a difference with 300-320WHP as opposed to stock. Nonetheless it was a good race, you can see the performance of these cars, the EN definitely best bang for your buck at $35K~ MSRP, even with the GRC coming to MSRP its $40-45K (not counting core edition) and CTR if you can find them at MSRP starting $45K. Respect to both drivers and their cars! and this goes to show not every car/driver performance will be the same. *edit curb weight
EN works better with the square setup, so going to 255 tires all round, would have closed the gap. I'd be nice to know what type of sway bar and links were used for Type-R cause, it seemed above average tuning. Dynamic sound the sweeper was spot on, even with the significant mismatch in tire size.
@@jpizel1070 oh you made another good point, technically the EN DCT driver is at a disadvantage then because if you watch the video he uses paddle shifters (extended shifters on the mods list), DCT is quick but if you use the paddles it has a slight response delay, its good but not porsche lightning speed, the advantage the EN driver does have is he can keep two hands on the wheel for more stability rather than rowing the gears.. but again the DCT in manual mode is not as responsive as people would think, in this case if the Elantra driver had MT, tune, and larger tires he wouldve won
Would love to see a fair comparison, this was interesting but the Civic is a notch up stock, and no contest when modified that much. It shows how good the Elantra really is.
@@Zilla9k are you low functioning? How does cooling not make a difference when you're banging out hot laps all day lmao. They're turbo charged 4 bangers, they heat soak quickly on stock intercooler. Sxth element saw a 30 whp difference on stock tune for the EN on repeated pulls lmfao. Now consider the type r is also tuned and on 275's. It's playing with a 50 whp advantage minimum before heat soak kicks in and makes it a bigger difference. How does tire width not make a difference lmfao. What did you think wider tires are for? How little do you need to know about motorsports to think that Tire width makes no difference. Then why is everyone in autocross pushing the widest tire they're allowed to. Why is everyone squeezing in the widest wheel they can fit for hpde. Lmfao, guy said cooling and tire width doesn't win races. Brain rot
@@Zilla9k Cooling was everything in this show. Did you not hear the host say they spent the whole day trying to get the best lap. Type r are notorious for over heating on track days. No cooling mods, no extra tries to get the best lap.
Agree. Well, I don't know if I "need" stock vs stock, but at less then 2 seconds difference between the two, that's definitely in the realm of driver skill/experience differences. And for this test to be a bit more interesting, getting the same "pro" driver in both of these vehicles would be amazing.
If you notice closely, the N driving line was off and that cost him to understeer. Im sure he corrected it later that day but it shows that it was R's driving experience that got him the victory. Good show.
I got a 2023 6-speed Elantra N and got a Lap 3 stage 1.5 tune, which has me making over 300 whp. Yesterday I finally had the chance to catch a Civic Type-R on the freeway and after I smashed it looked like a Type-Awwwww :( I have never lost to a GTI and I don't think a FBO GTI can keep up with my tuned Elantra N. The car is amazing for the price. The Type R is a great car, but the history and ethos of the car means nothing today. Hyundai really stepped it up and I chose it over the R bc of the car-scalping stealership mark-ups. After they are done marking the price up, even the Civic SI was 35k! I got my Elantra N for 34k so they made the choice easy for me. The car is halfway paid off after a year of ownership and if I financed the R I would still be paying primarily on interest and modifying the bank's car.
With a better driver than the Hyundai would have come out on top. Buddy was pushing too hard, under steering, and just taking the wrong line. But he did say at the beginning the car needs a better driver and then he proved it.
I mean - idk how this is even remotely close to a "fair" competition. The EN basically just has the N Performance intake...meanwhile the FK8R has a whole slew of stuff done to it.
As per the listed mods: the EN has paddle shifters, wheels, springs, and lower engine mount. The FK8R has: flash tuner, intake, FMIC, coilovers, brake pads, radiator, engine mount, rear sway, front tire width, and wheels. (This is straight from the mod lists they provided for each car). Like I said - this is not even REMOTELY close to a fair competition.
For the price Elantra N baby, and the honda was tuned, it's a loss in my mind for the type r, more expensive stock, then more money on a tune to be 1.7 faster on a 2 min track with wider tires.
@soapyfish8954 intercooler isn't adding power and they had all day to hit fast laps so heat soak wasn't an issue. Dct is faster for these drivers because they aren't professionals.
@@Dalan-S-Zydel the driver alone is worth .85 secs per minute, not even considering the power difference, and tires.... With just 3k (downpipe, tune , intake)the N will smoke it. Ndriverkg had 410+ to the wheels (tuned by n75)..... with 3k. 1.7 is not impressive at all on a 2 min track. Let's see a stock type r vs a stock n with one driver. See how fast the 1.7 diminishes.
First time seen this channel an all in one show (love the driver battles series) 👏👏🔥🔥🔥. Definitely something different from other platforms. I will subscribe ❤
@@jpizel1070 That is what Hondas are doing now. They are not what they used to be. Check out the one right now for a fuel pump causing a fire on 4.5 million vehicles.
The 23s all sold out so they were scarce. The 24s are finally arriving at dealers now tho so they will be more and more available in the coming weeks and months.
Wonder what the charge air temp differences were between the two with the CTR having an aftermarket one that must be better and more efficient at keeping the temps lower for much longer for better power. Tires should have been the same as well to keep things even.
@@That1lowaccordnah bro. How’s it on top when it had power mods and a much larger tire and the driver has more track experience and the EN is only 1 second behind the type-R. If the EN had 255-275 size tires that would’ve made the difference all in itself considering stock savage geese showed that on the same tire, same driver they’re only a tenth apart around the track. Stop fanboying and look at for what it really is with you slow ass accord 🤣🤷🏻♂️
@@ctcdarkness this is the response you get from fan boys. Just because it’s a Honda its “better”. Type r can barely handle 3 hot laps before oil heating issues. EN can take a whole session with no issues. But still people come up with “type r on top” 😭
@@ctcdarkness They be trolling, they can't even buy a trike, let alone a car. I used to be a hardcore Honda fan (K20 era), but those days are long gone. The SI now comes with a fuel pump on the L15B that it is a literal fire hazard (4.5 million recalled), and the Type R heats up if tracked for more than a couple laps. It's literal trash, and they know it.
Don't waste your money and energy in order to run slower. In the past, expensive automatic transmission wasted a lot of energy, so there was a reason to use manual transmission. But with DCT, you can drive faster by focusing on handling and braking. Only 7-speed DSG Golf R wins EN DCT which wins all MT cars(~300hp) even in drag.
4 to 9 grand more for the honda before Mark up this dose a good job of showing how close the Elantra N is compared to the type R to me its the better car for the money
Doesn't surprise me...at less then 2 seconds in this test...a lot of that is going to come down to driver skills. I can definitely see the N with a skilled driver beating a CTR with a less experienced driver.
I guess the DCT made up for the tune on the type r. 275 vs 245. Race pads vs stock pads. Can make a few second difference. But you can tell EN being over driven while Type R is smoother. I like how there are so many factors on the outcome.
A lot of people have to understand that the reason the Elantra n happened was because of the type r Hyundai bought a bunch of type r’s and just took everything the type r did good and they created a nice package as a sedan
All the Elantra N owners low key coping missing out on the video 5 months ago where an R went against an EVO X which is a better car than the N and they were pretty equal. Type R won it. Props to the N being a good driver tho
The DCT was the killer here, even as an R owner myself, that DCT is the reason it kept up the way it did. Manual for manual it wouldn't have been nearly that close. It is a better car, hence the cost. The Elantra N is killer though, don't get me wrong. I've considered one multiple times for the sake of offering a DCT, but the R is just so special.
The Elantra was stock to begin with, second Elantra has less horsepower than the fk8 , the person driving don’t have the same experience as the guy with the fk8 , fk8 have suspension, brake pads , tires and wheels , plus a tuned , you know that the Elantra n stock vs stock it was going to be another story , let’s be honest !!
I would have never thought how close this would have been. I wouldn’t mind tracking against my older brother to see where we stand . He drives an M4 and I drive a MK7R. Both has light mods
@Dalan-S-Zydel i personally haven't drove an fl5 but my brother used to own an fk8 until he sold it to get an suv (family matters lol) and the N is way more fun than the fk8. Though the fk8 looks obnoxious though lol.
After seeing a stock EN get the street class FWD record at Grid Life and running within a couple seconds of Porsche's.... More experience the N would win. Impressive as he stated he really does not have track experience in the N. The bigger front tires helped the R for sure. A track that runs high into the rpms the R would take it most likely. I know you can mod the EN to get a little more out of the redline but those Honda engines sing in those higher rpms.
I have EN can't afford the super markup of CTR FL5 and only 2 dealers in the Western Australia with set price from Honda no negotiable. CTR $75,000 and warranty does not cover track use.
I want to see a Kia Forte GT-line Turbo versus the Hyundai N! Also I would love to race anyone in my 2020 150 K mile Carolla. I dear anyone to challenge me! 😅
A wobbly comparo… all different mods and different drivers, an Apple vs an orange with so many variables.. these tests should be common tyres only, everything else stock and same pro driver
So bring 2 completely different class of cars (pricewise), add a ton more mods on the more expensive car, and win by a second? Honda really needs to get to work on the Civic R.
@@jonnys_honda The Elantra N was not out until 2022. Year per year the Honda is more expensive, and finding one at MSRP then or now was/is impossible. The dealer mark ups made sure of that. No mark ups on the Elantra N.
@@S.Madmannot arguing with anything you’re say on that. The argument is on the cars tested in the video. That CTR was $35.5k and was absolutely found for MSRP depending on your region. Markups are not found on new type r’s today because the Integra Type S came out at the higher price and evens out the pricing. Elantra N depending on region is also no markup. But absolutely can be found with markup. Now you’re out of luck if you’re in SoCal as everything is marked up period.
@@S.Madmanadditionally. No Type R was available for year 2022. Understood type r today increased their MSRP*. But it’s not the one tested. It’s a different chassis all together.
@@jonnys_hondait's simply a slightly stiffer chassis. And not only that but the FK8 is actually faster than the fl5 from a dig. In the end the Elantra is the better deal
The elantra's line is so bad. He is a metre or 2 away from every apex while the honda is driving on the kerbs everytime. Remember guys, It doesn't matter what's under the hood. The only thing that matters is who's behind the wheel.
EN comes in 6spd manual as well and the DCT def counts as a "drivers car." It's the closest thing to a real life racing Sequential. No modern performance cars are true manual at their peak, and if you think that it's the primary criteria for being considered an 'enthusiasts car', then you're deluded. Might as well argue that any modern manual that has synchros, Rev matching, and electronics doesn't count either. Which is literally every manual car now. They're not purely mechanical and easier to clutch than older cars. Go far back enough in technological purity and one could argue that the Horse and Carriage is the most visceral lmao. The absurdity has no limits.
@@Sayu2x Nope they are not. They are cars for track times that basically do everything for you. Just because a car is track capable doesn’t make it a drivers car. A car you actually have to drive is a drivers car.
@ardyshane23 So I guess every manual in the world is a drivers car and it's somehow impressive even though most senior citizens know how to row a couple gears? Get a fcking grip. A proper Dual Clutch transmission is what makes for a modern performance oriented drivers car no matter how hard you try to deny it. And there's Manual options for the N cars anyway, so idk why you're so concerned about what is and what isn't for enthusiasts. The shear arrogance on you lot, thinking you can gatekeep cars just because you like pushing on a clutch and playing with a stick all day. Manuals are fun, but they're not the pinnacle of engagement. It's an older and less efficient way to do the same exact thing that any sped can do with a car.
@@NGSMODEa car that drives for you is not a “drivers car.” You are correct, electronic nannies do take away from a car being a drivers car, and so does a DCT. A drivers car doesn’t have to be the fastest, it simply will engage with the driver the most requiring driver input and giving accurate feedback. A DCT removes one of the most important and skillful driver inputs and electronic aids take over the driver input and numb the feedback. There are plenty of arguments proving autos and electronics make cars faster, but good luck explaining how it increases driver engagement.
I didn't even watch the video yet & I know for a fact that 100% the Civic will win. Especially with Jose behind the wheel? Elantra is just happy to be invited. It's got nothing on the Civic. There's a reason why Han said "whatchu think, I'm gonna let you roll in a Hyundai?" Edit: after watching the entire video & reading some comments, I still stand by my words. Oh boy everyone be hating on the Civic. Saying things like beat by only 1 second blah blah blah. 1 second is a lot in the racing world. It's true that the Civic had more stuff on it but everyone is forgetting that a race is a race. One person is going to have the upper hand in any competitive scenario & in this case, it was Jose with the track experience, bigger tires, probably race alignment, etc. You can't complain/argue about the other guy being "less" whether it be in preparation or what you bring to the fight because only children argue to recognize that type of comparison. We all want the underdog to win but c'mon, it's a Hyundai Lol. Took them long enough to get this far, & they were close, but being close is never good enough in terms of winning.
Is the same reason the Type R is losing on the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge (TCR). Proven championships, by professional drivers on nearly stock vehicles.
The Elantra N stole the Laguna fwd production record from the type r. The nurburgring lap record is impressive to NPCs like you that have never tracked their cars. It was a full blown race car, on proper track tires, stripped and caged. Yes it's a good time, but tires alone will make a huge difference when you're comparing those times to other STOCK production cars. A tire like a ps4s will overheat to failure on a single hot lap on heavy high power cars like these. Considering nurburgring laptimes are near 8 minutes, changing tires alone makes an absolute world of a difference. For context, most tracks are 1-2minute laps, and a normal street tire overheats and chunks with a fast driver behind the wheel. Comparing a fully race built car's laptimes to stock production cars is laughable. What I do know is that honda no longer has the PRODUCTION stock fwd record.
@@42cuba ignorant take from someone who knows nothing about the scene. Hyundai TCR Elantra N is undefeated and has won every year since it's come out. Aka, Hyundai's max effort race built Elantra N is faster than Honda's. Maybe reading comprehension doesn't run in the family Their laptimes are for the 24hr endurance race, where they lap around 9 minutes or high 8's. Obviously it's slower than a one lap hot lap. In the same 24hr race, Honda is slower. Again, just because they don't advertise their hot lap times in hopes that morons like you think it's a Stock production record doesnt mean they aren't capable. In fact, Honda hasn't been able to be competitive with Hyundai in TCR for 2 years, this year will make the third. Honda hasn't made a car that can win tcr in years 😂. Decades of fwd heritage btw.
@S.Madman dude people don't tune these engines. I'm not giving you a source. Why do you think there's like no aftermarket for the engine. Look it's a great value car, there's a reason for it. You get what you pay for. Corners cut etc, structurally unsound, untunable etc

The Elantra N has also won a ton of awards. It won performance car of the year top 10 finalist, same award as the type r. Obviously the type r gets more coverage, it's a more popular car with more heritage. But your statement that it's beaten the N brand in every single review is hilarious. It's objectively untrue, literally lost to it in road and tracks performance car of the year. This is a classic example of an actual tard with insane confirmation bias. Yes the type r has won a bunch of awards, so has the EN. Just because you don't go around watching EN reviews doesnt mean that it doesn't win awards lmao. Road and track and car and driver had both the EN and type r as top 10 finalists for pcoty. Litterally won the same award lmfao. Also, never been a fan of the "can't compare dct to manual" argument. But Honda literally couldn't afford to spend any development budget on an automatic, People are really complaining the dct is unfair to compare against when the Elantra N is half the price of the type r and Honda couldn't even develop a performance automatic lmao. Complaining about auto is hilarious. It's like complaining that the WRX has AWD. The dct Elantra N is still half the price of a type r after markup. Not Hyundai's fault Honda put 100% of their development budget into a manual type r. Everyone gets to choose which transmission they want. If you pick the slower car with the slower transmission, live with it being slower lmao. You choose a manual for drivers engagement, if the car ends up slower for it, it's a slower car. Also please educate yourself before trying to speak on things you know nothing about. You're leaking out of your ass. TCR is super related to production cars. Stock engines are used, stock internals. The chassis and engine need to come from a production car. There's a reason TCR has been such a big point for Honda in the past, theyre production road cars turned into race cars lmao. Nothing like using a Honda engine in a red bull car lmfao. It's actually hilarious. Honda fan boys say the type r is the best because of TCR. Then when they lose TCR, TCR no longer matters lmfao. @@van_der_lindeDA Yeah didn't say anything about an fk8 to a dct lmao. You're tweaking but I guess reading comprehension doesn't run in your family. Guys we heard it here, the definitive metric of a good car is that it's sold in south africa. LMAO. The TCR car is an extremely good reflection of a production car. Stop talking about shit you have no clue about, you look like an idiot. It's a class where you need to use a stock production motor, bigger turbos are fine but stock internals and the engine cannot be opened up. It uses a stock production chassis, it's litterally just motorsports bolt ons and a sequential gear box. There's a reason TCR is brought up. Honda dominated it for years. It's a very valid achievement. Honda fans claim TCR is so important and as soon as they lose it's no longer valid? It's litterally the most prestigious FWD race class, and it's a very good reflection of a car's capability with motorsports mods made equal. What do you know about TCR to say it doesn't count? You don't know anything. You probably haven't ever even tracked your car lmao. No one said you shouldn't enjoy your type r. You're literally out here tweaking that people don't like your $60k civic lmao. All I said was that it was funny that the owner brought up TCR when they've literally never been able to beat the TCR elantra N. The elantra N also won a ton of awards. It won the same awards as the type R. Top 10 PCOTY from both road and track and car and driver, same award that the type r won lmao. Just because you don't watch elantra N reviews doesn't mean that it doesn't win awards, it just means that you're dumb enough to go around speaking on things that you know nothing about. I love the type r. I just think it's overpriced as shit and a terrible value. Not debating that in stock form it isn't faster than a manual elantra N, it definitely is across most tracks. But it accomplishes it by being unpractical stiff (unlike the fk8 that was a good balance) and wide ass tires. The car hasn't even actually seen much improvement since the fk8, and an fk8 on the same tire and coilovers is just as fast. It's hilarious though, people that actually track their cars have a ton of respect for both cars, meanwhile people like you that can barely read throw all seasons on and go grocery shopping and use car and driver reviews as their benchmarks. All I did was point out it was funny to use TCR to say the type r is better when it's lost every year to the elantra N in tcr.
