Can you travel long distances with a Honda CRF300L Rally? Is the Honda CRF300L Rally a good bike for touring? This video documents my 1000 mile ride from Everett Washington to Missoula Montana on a 2021 Honda CRF300L Rally. Hours of highway riding, backroads riding & off-road light adventuring through: Steamboat Rock State Park, Hanford Reach, & Beverly ORV.
Bike has a Garmin Zumo XT & a Nelson Rigg Tank Bag, otherwise it's completely stock.
Video gear used: DJI Mini 2, GoPro Hero9

@@howardelzey2760 I don't know about Ken, but I've got a 1995 BMW R1100RT *and* a 2019 CRF250 Rally, both bought new and I haven't bought any other bikes in between -- I traded a K100RT on the R1100, and I at that point also had a late 80s XR600 which I sold some years later. For sure the R1100 is better for doing 1000 km on highways in a day, but I've done plenty of 200 to 300 mile days on the Rally already, and there are plenty of places in this video I'd not take the BMW, or would ride it a *lot* slower. If my aim is exploring ("adventure") not Point A to Point B then I take the little 250.

What an epic journey--great videography, great music and it really shows what the CRF 300 Rally is capable of, although I am sure a bit more relaxed touring (versus high speed highway) would be its sweet spot. Still, though, the fact it was able cruise at higher speeds than what you'd typically go on this bike is impressive indeed. I love NW Montana (have been to Missoula and North of there on multiple occasions), and you need to be going 85 or so not to get run over up there. Great riding--thanks for producing this!

After years of wanting a bike, I’ve decided I’m taking the plunge. The rally is on my short list and seems it fills my imagined role nicely. Planning on buy a camper and traveling so having a lightweight bike to explore with would just make the experience better
@TrekEthos
@TrekEthos 3 года назад
I'd have to agree with your reasoning here - The Rally does seem like a good bike to pair with a camper for traveling + exploration. I'd also say that the Rally is a ridiculously easy bike to ride: Low seat height, low weight, light clutch, hard to stall, won't wheelie on power, & relatively smooth power delivery makes it a great first bike. Ride safe my friend🍻

Awesome concept and video! What RPM is this bike at in 6th at 65 MPH on the highway?
@TrekEthos
@TrekEthos 3 года назад
Thanks! The bike is at about 6500 RPM at 65 mph in 6th gear. Also worth pointing out that the redline is 10500 RPM and peak power (28 HP) arrives at 8500 RPM
@BruceHoult
@BruceHoult 3 года назад
65 to 70 is perfectly smooth and comfortable. I personally wouldn't do 75+ for extended periods on mine because of vibrations and increased fuel consumption (and the highway speed limit here is 62), but then it's only the 250 not the 300 (286). Also note that 65 mph very near maximum torque, so you've got plenty in reserve for hill climbing or acceleration, which you don't past 75.

@TrekEthos
@TrekEthos 3 года назад
The bike does better on the highway than any other dual sport I've owned. The windscreen, fairing, bar end weights, rubber in the foot pegs, and the large fuel tank come together to make the bike very manageable on the highway for extended periods. I had no issues with vibrations during my ride, seat was comfortable for me for about 5-6 hours. It's also worth pointing out that this bike burned no oil even though I was at top speed for nearly 3 hours.

@TrekEthos
@TrekEthos 3 года назад
I actually felt totally normal the next day (in fact I went riding). It's worth pointing out though, that I use my motorcycles as my main source of transportation. Commuting, errands, pretty much everything and in all weather conditions. I probably have more daily seat time on a bike than a typical rider (at least here in the states). If I didn't ride as much my guess is that the 1000 mile trip would have been far more uncomfortable.

I will say though that I did dyno test the bike (you can find the video on my channel) and it makes about 28 hp at the crank so not a whole lot of power. Fantastic video, and just like a previous comment Honda need to see this as its a fantastic opportunity for them to show how versitile this bike is. I tried one out last weekend and `I'm definitely going to buy one. Your video has confirmed this can cover miles at a reasonable pace. Thanks for sharing 😀👍🏻 Oh and subscribed

Thanks man I appreciate that👍 It really is the versatility that makes me love the bike - It doesn't do any one thing the best but it can do it all - Thanks for watching and the sub, safe riding out there!

as a cb300r owner, if the crf300l speedometer is 10% optimistic as well and gears quite short too, i suggest +1 front sprocket, less buzy highway ride and much more accurate speedometer reading (from 10% to 2.5% off). it will sacrifice some low speed off road riding but on the road it becomes more usable and relaxed

What a great video, and what a fantastic little bike. Just goes to show you don't need a 300kg mega expensive bike to see far away places. Thank you.

Pretty cool, I did a trip from San Francisco to Eastern Washington. Its pretty dang far. Was fun but I was really sore. Took me two days going each way. I was surprised how much the weather changed and how powerful wind can be. 38 degrees in fog to over 100 degrees. 38F in fog is Freaking cold!! haha. The aero of the bike makes a big difference, I have a windshield installed and used some cardboard to block off some areas. Its awesome being exposed to nature on a bike. You really feel there, instead of sitting in a car which feels more like watching a tv screen. Oh and the smells, that's one of the neat things on a bike. ha!

Honda is proving once again that it is simply number 1 even on small displacements. / with the Rally300L you can go around the world on any terrain, spending very little on petrol and maintenance. GREAT BIKE, I'll buy it too

Trying to decide on either the 300 Rally or the CB500X. Got any suggestions?
@TrekEthos
@TrekEthos 3 года назад
I think the Rally and the CB500X fit different riding needs so it really depends on what you're looking for in your motorcycle. The biggest difference IMO is that the Rally is 100 lbs lighter than the CB. This makes a huge difference in being able to ride off-road with confidence - I've always found that I push further and go farther off-road when the bike is lightweight. The Rally also has a significant edge in ground clearance, suspension travel, & a 21" front wheel. Off-road the Rally is stronger in a very noticeable way. But on road the Rally starts to show it's drawbacks compared to the CB. The Rally only makes 28hp and can run out of power going up grades at speed or trying to overtake cars. The low power also will be more apparent if you load the bike up with tons of gear. The 21" front wheel is slower to react on road and wind will push the bike around too. Like I said though, ultimately it's about what you are looking for in a bike. Hope that helps👍

Thanks! No the Garmin was pretty straightforward to install. You have to remove the seat, side cover, and the left side fairing. There is a good amount of room to route the cable under the body panels. Hope you get your Honda soon👍
