This mower is a beast. Someone tossed one out 10 yrs ago and left a sign that it wouldn't start. I rescued him and found the only thing wrong was the supply valve from the tank was shut off! Best mower I have ever owned and POWERFUL.
I know people are so stupid I bought an hrb216 about 15 years ago 50 dollars and I use that thing commercially still to this very day and it runs like it does the day I bought it the lawn mower I have is a 1995 model yes and the one that this man has is a late 80s early 90s back when Honda was truly on top of their game that all changed in the early 2000s upwards
You did it again, provided me with more possible solutions to my immediate problem. A Kohler 6.75 which ran poorly when I retrieved it, at the shop not at all, arrgh. Thanks for the new tips. Narragansett Bay
Bruce's Shop I’m guessing they weren’t cared for very well. I have always made sure the air filter and housing is cleaned out. Now that I’ve been studying small engine work for three months I’ve learned that not making sure everything that goes into the cylinder is as clean as possible does tend to cause wear in that area leading to oil burning excessively (at the very least).
I had one left behind by a tenant that would barely fire. The automatic choke engines have some sort of thermal wax plug thingies on the carburetor that cost maybe twelve bucks. In addition, the carbs have all kinds of gaskets and thimagagoos . The solution for being able to assemble a Honda carb is to borrow or buy studs from a horizontal Honda engine and the carb is easy to assemble and test properly. Those old original Honda carbs are good ones if you understand the auto chokes and how to easily assemble them with the assembly studs which are available as a set or just get them from an old broken horizontal engine. I know this doesn't apply to this project, but I am sure that Bruce has or will work on one of the auto chokes some day. Like the channel . God bless
Odd to see that much wrong with a Honda but it sounds pretty sweet now. By the looks of that shroud, it was a well used machine so it is okay that it needs a tune-up. Thanks Bruce.
Hey Bruce if I had a dollar for everytime you drop something I would have a lot of extra $$$ LOL. I had days I drop stuff all day long but other days I don't. Keep up the good work Bruce
How's she goin'? Nice fix Bruce. Once again you show that if you aren't satisfied you won't let it go. I like to see that!! Interesting when you state that new carbs run leaner. I installed a new carb on my new to me MTD and it surges terrible at high speed. I wonder if I were to increase the main jet if that would help. We'll see. Thanks for posting this and Happy Thanksgiving to you and Mrs P!!!
First is it a Honda style carb? If so There is the main jet you know and there is the idle jet under the idle adjustment (plastic black screw). That can be enlarged a SMALL amount too.
@@BrucesShop No it's not a Honda type carb and the High Speed jet looks to be inaccessible. I ordered another carb with a high speed jet adjustment and I'm waiting for that to come in. Once it shows up I'll install it and then have a look at this carb to see if I can access the high speed jet. But I don't want to try right now in case I ruin the carb.
My tip: before adjusting all the springs, plates, etc, go back and check the choke rod was not bent when taking off the carb. Looks like it is bent at 21:44. Often happens.
@@BrucesShop I just had one that wouldn't idle correctly due to a bent linkage. That's why it caught my eye. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NTx8cBKFNG0.html
You are correct on the newer and the chonda carbs running lean outta the box, when Twisted V Twin and Puller Bear Ed were here at my house yesterday someone called Mark and posed a question to him Both Me and Ed said at the same time it's running running lean,,........
Hi Bruce. Not going to give you heck about the prop stick. I was wondering how it would have gotten so out of wack but then you said its had work done to it a couple times. That leads to to many fingers fiddling with it eh. She runs smooth now that the master worked on it
just google Carb for HRA214 and you will get this. I am trying to train folks as I am getting too busy with almost 40,000 subs now sorry www.google.com/search?q=carb+for+honda+hra214&rlz=1C1CHBD_enCA740CA740&oq=carb+for+honda+hra214&aqs=chrome..69i57j0i22i30.9079j0j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Bruce can you tell us how much you increased the jet size to stop the surging? Good video just wondering about the 3500 to 3600 rpm specification we normally set all our small engines to a maximum of 3150 rpm.
I thought about that higher rpm speed, too. But 3150 (actually 2950- 3100 in my mower owner's manual & called "Maximum Governed "Speed") is the recommendation for the more recent GCV160's & 190's. However, Bruce's mower has a GXV120 (late 90's; early 2000's). Maybe that's the reason for the higher rpm. I checked the GXV120 owner's manual online & it only references a speed of 2000 +/- 150 RPM with the "throttle lever in the LO position;" that is, at idle. Interestingly, the GCV160 engine manual, as opposed to the mower manual, only references an idle speed (no mention of a max speed) of 1,450 +/- 150 RPM. Maybe that explains why the older engines can handle higher rpm than the newer one's. In any case, Honda's are great mowers/engines but they are anything but clear-cut.
@@jjparody8257 Normally when i have checked engine specifications the higher rpm's are what has been used to develop the torque rating of the engine. I would also think that a higher rpm on an engine would not last as long as one running in the 3100 rpm area. But you a absolutely correct Honda engines are the best.
Hi Bruce from wpg. I own five of those mowers best in the world!! they are susceptible to the idle jet being plugged easily. Also I noticed the cable was off at the handle not sure if that would do it. cheers brother!
So, could the customer have used gasoline with ethanol and then the water caused it to gum up? Coach us Bruce on proper winterization of yard equipment. Beautiful close-ups Bruce!
At Eliminator Performance we also use K100S+ and have been using it for going on 9 years. We actually have 3 year old treated fuel with the K100+ all stored in the NO SPILL fuel tanks and it looks just like fresh fuel bought today likely because these fuel tanks have no venting. Dosage to eliminate water is actually equal parts. Use ethanol free fuel only like we do and you will have no issues.
We also test our fuel when purchased from Canadian Tire and so far 91 Octane has had zero ethanol. Years ago we only used their 87 since it was ethanol free at that time.
well in the last 2 days ive ran into 2 small engine i cant seem to fix in fact one i made worse..i got them well the leaf blower for free so theyre not customers..i dont do this for money not yet anyway..i did a couple and both are ok and sold soem ive repaired i do it as a hobby . eveyr lawnmower ive got to work but this leaf blower for wahatever reason doesnt want to turn over i cleaned the carberator and everything and still nothing..if i cake it in starter fluid it'll turn over and die...i cleaned it pretty good i think but maybe i overlooked soemthing..i hate to throw it out seeing as how it worked before when i picked it up but the pull start messed up and im thinking thats why the guy threw it out so i manage to fix that..i think anyway..it pulls but theres a bit of slack after the pull it doesnt coil up fully idk if thats a problem..im new to this so im still learning..teh other one is a weed eater i bought for 15 bucks just to mess around and test my skills and it pulls good but doesnt start either the gas tank i think is too dirty and i cant get in there to clean it out and to buy parts it just seems like it'd be a waste not worht the money but maybe i will just to prove i can fix it idk. there'll be others tbh these are the first 2 i ran into that i havent been able to fix. im still new i just have a feeling im overlooking soemthing or soemthing...so im about 8 for 10
Can anyone help me with where the breather tube off the air filter housing connects to on the engine side? Mines come undone and i can't for the life of me figure out where it connects. I've got the 1986 HR214 and it still runs great but when i engage the the blade it kills. Usually i just clean the carburator and it's fine but i just noticed the breather tube isn't connected to wherever it's supposed to be.
In this video right here starting at spot 21:18 (not the above video) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-svhv1Cbl6qc.html There is a hole for the vent tube
Hey Bruce, You must be an early riser! A bit confused on the jet. Did you drill it out? I worked on a machine just like that in the summer. The whole time, I kept telling myself, don’t break anything, you never find replacement parts! I used to work with a guy named Jack and he was an amateur pilot. Always found that funny!
Hi Bruce, Ive got same honda but my one a bit smoke when starts after few minutes smoke disappear!!! Dont know what wrong, honda always starts with first pull!!!! Nice video 😉 greetings from Poland
Thank you for all the teaching in this video! This old dog (thumbnail notwithstanding) learned several new tricks. One question: if the issues with the engine were all carb-related, why do you think the engine wouldn't start at the beginning when you gave it a shot of go juice?
Out of all the channels I watch on small engine repair, you seem to be the one tech that bends, tweaks, stretches, compresses, attachment points that forces you to resort to changing the intended design. You eventually get it to run, but I don't think I would have much confidence in your approach and long term product reliability. Changing the jet size here is case in point.
I have been doing this for many years. Regarding the jetting of the carbs most small engine mechanics do it now as carb orifices have gotten so small most newer engines surge when not under load. As well all of the machine i repair get a warranty and I tell them to bring it back and I will make it right.
WHY do you folks keep gas in a mower over the winter or even in a gas can???run dry or drain and toss it in the car/truck. Illogical frugality for a pint of gas...
