I've revisited this video and it reminded me how much I enjoy your reviews of the larger hobby grade planes vs the toy grade. The hobby grade planes showcase your piloting skills. Great job Brian.

This is THE most satisfying RC video I've watched in my life. I have the Carbon Cub S+ as one of my first planes and will train some more months with it to get ready for this beautiful Carbon Z Cub SS. The sound, the versatility, the look - awesome. Great flying skills shown here Brian, amazing work from camera-crew, too! Hope Horizon Hobby rewards you for that. And since I am from Germany I need to mention the unboxing video and that "DE" in the manual doesn't mean Dutch (Netherland's language), but "DEeutsch", German. Calling a German "Dutch" is like I'd refer to Americans as Canadians :)

Thanks so much for saying that! My wife, Megan, does a great job filming. We didn't realize what a knack she has for filming until we started this little RU-vid "experiment". We're lucky to have her helping us out! As for staying close...I try, and it does somewhat limit what I can do (for a video audience), but it's totally my "style" to fly in close quarters. I LOVE having the limitations, but there's times it's nice to have a bit more room, or when flying with a smaller aircraft, it's REALLY easy to shoot a landing, compared to this behemoth! Thanks for watching, and for the kind words!

At least you get to watch the awesome planes flying from the AFB!!! BUT that would suck with the no flight zone. How bad would that suck if they built an airport right next to my house - LOL - this is part of the reason I want to make a full scale runway ;) Get it established now, then muddy the waters for the FAA. If it's "my" private runway, then I guess I will be in full compliance - I HOPE!!! P.S. I'm glad I could be of some annoyance to you ;) JK Keep coming back for more!

Ty - yeah, at about 14:30 or so, there was a "moment", but other than that, she's a great flying, and fairly forgiving aircraft...when you get ready to land, the plane seems to reject any notion of ground effect - LOL - which is why you see me smacking it to the ground so many times. It's very finite, the stall speed, there's NO warning...it just falls!

Nice flying Brian, and lots of good suggestions. So, you want a carbon cub and your own runway. Go for it. A Citabria is a less expensive entry. I had one. About 40K. My runway is 900ft and its one way in and out. One side uphill and tall trees, the other, open water. You can set up a nice approach but once you are below tree level there is no going around. Never been a problem though. And man, it is so much fun to walk out the back door and jump in an airplane. I had a friend who used to do high alpha takeoffs just like you did with that cub, but with a full sized 172. Sadly, his antics eventually ended badly. When you get your full sized airplane put on a different hat. :). Looking forward to your Draco review. I have one on order.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
That is AWESOME, and you've made me super jealous!!! I want to buy out my neighbor to the South, and use the crest of our knolls back there for a runway...that's why we do GRASS hay, and not alfalfa (tangling the wheels up would make for a bad day, I suspect). Some day, you should EMAIL me, so we can share more specifics that might not be appropriate in this public arena. We have it listed on the ABOUT part of the channel...and we are slow with checking it, it's kind of a good Spam catcher - LOL ;)
@bendrixbailey1430

@@BrianPhillipsRC I mowed mine lawn smooth, always. Believe it or not but a grass stain on a prop is considered a prop strike, and a prop strike (FAA rule) requires the engine be torn down and inspected. I doubt anyone does, but if you got ramp checked with grass stains on the prop you’d have to. So, the runway at least has to be mowed short. Doesn’t matter what grows to either side. I cultivated some nice tough poverty grass and goldenrod beside mine!

Your neighbors probably think there is a crop duster around.. you took some chances, but that's what makes you get better, it would be kind of boreing otherwise.. that plane needs lights! Good video, looking forward to thd next video.. HOrizon should send you planes to review!
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 4 года назад
I totally agree about the lights!!! Daylight "savings" stupidity is about to go into force, so we'll have to come home from work to a pittance of daylight - PUKE - thus nav lights and landing lights are going to be a thing very soon. Maybe if my other filming obligations pan out the way I expect, I can work that mod video into my docket in the next few weeks. I'm also trying to buy a tractor right now, and we've been working out tails off on getting the woods cleaned up before horrible weather sets in, but that could actually wait.... As for Horizon Hobby sending me planes - yes please!!! I've kinda been asking for a couple years now, but they don't seem to even understand how many times I've sold stuff for them. I'd be nice, even if they'd give me a blanket discount at least, but I guess they know me well enough to know I'm gonna buy it anyway, so why offer it to me for free or at a discount (I don't know, maybe so I wouldn't have time to review Banggood stuff???? - Just saying - LOL)

When you get a prop with a bit of a BEND, it can also cause some vibration, so check that too...look at the prop from the side and top while it's spinning (CAREFULLY, of course) and then double check the prop isn't "wobbling". Even if you have it balanced, this wobbling will make it seem out of balance. Also, you may need to check the balance of the spinner too, and sometimes the motor! If the prop is all, you'll be good with the tape solution, even though some of the "old timers" will complain it's pretty half-assed...BUTT it works ;)

yes, they seem to be about the same, but the ZOP packs seem to fly longer...partially, because it was NEW and the Turnigy is not brand new (2 seasons old??? - sorry, I'm not 100% sure on that)...BUT my Turnigy packs do tend to puff pretty bad, since I'm not very nice to the packs always. You might be pleasantly surprised how inexpensive these ZOP lipos are, but they're only a small savings over Turnigy...or Zippy...except I LOVE XT60's, and I can get them stock with ZOP. This is a big time saver for me. Soldering on different ends is a real pain in the neck on lipos, especially BIGGER ones ;)

Brian, not really a flying question - but as we get out of another lock-down here in the UK I want to tidy up my cub. The orange paint seems poorly applied and the aircraft needs a little TLC with the paint coming off at the edges of certain areas. Do you know what kind of paint I should get - ideally the correct orange of course, but what type of paint too? BTW - very much looking forward to your Draco review - I assume you are already flying it as you wait for being able to review it.

I don't know the color, but I would say pick the closest orange and plan to paint whole sections ;( I HATE having to touch up hangar rash...since there's always that flaky stuff that doesn't stick, and then 95% of it that's totally fine... I've been told you can take some paint or a single part off the plane and take it into a hardware store and have latex paint matched, almost exactly...but I've never done this myself...so I feel bad recommending it without first had experience ;) As for the Draco... We have the Draco now, BUT we aren't allowed to review yet. This is not our choice. We will ABSOLUTELY BE REVIEWING IT ASAP! Im having problems with mine. Throttle does not kick in before almost halv stick. I need to figure out how to calibrate the esc. But with the AS3X it is impossible
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
You can calibrate the throttle range super easy. Generally, you put the throttle stick to 100%, then plug in the plane, but do it SUPER CAREFUL! This plane can chop your fingers off if you're not CAREFUL!!! Secure the plane and keep in a safe position, but best option would be to remove the prop. When the plane FAILS to initiate, you'll hear the songs from the ESC, and then just pull the Throttle stick down to 0%. If that DOESN'T work, call horizon and see what they suggest. Also, make sure the monitor mode shows a nice linear response similar to your stick position through the range.

@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 7 месяцев назад
Gotta dig in and see if the prop is out of balance, or if you have a magnet thrown in the motor, or some other mechanical binding. Once you find it, you need to resolve it so you don't get into a dangerous condition. If the servos are making noise, like when you SHIFT the plane in your hand, that's normal...but if the prop / motor makes noise, you need to check it out.

Brian, I see you do stuff from time to time that I dont agree with, but I gotta say something this time: That is NOT in any way a valid way to balance a prop. Also, the main reason the Z Cub sounds that way, is because of the spinner. Its been an issue since the V1, and I have had 3 CZ Cubs. (Currently have a v1, and a v2, sold my other v1). Balance the prop properly using a balancer, then add a better quality spinner. Your power train will be glad you did. Cheers
@ModelAV8RChannel
@ModelAV8RChannel 4 года назад
Totally agree with you. I notice he didn't respond. Brian...take all this as constructive criticism. Balance your prop with a quality balancer during the build before you put it on. (Du Bro makes a great one) Also for the sake of terminology...you are hearing vibration, not oscillation. Oscillation is what the gyro /AS3X makes the air frame do if the gains are too high at speed or if there is too much vibration. (over correcting back and forth) And one last thing...you are coming very close to yourself and your wife when you fly. You can risk you all you want if you so choose, but never fly a plane right at someone else...especially a big plane. At 3:30...that was dangerous. I know lens focal length may distort how close it looks, but you still flew right at her. Your piloting skills are much better than in your early video's and most of the time your video's are very entertaining, but no amount of skill negates basic safety. Anything can happen - electronic failure, dumb thumb, anything. If you hit her you won't forgive yourself. Please be more careful and happy flying.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 4 года назад

@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 4 года назад
Model Aviator Adventures - Sorry I didn't reply fast enough for your taste. If you weren't already aware, I have a full time job, a family of four, and loads of other responsibilities...didn't know I had to beat you to the reply. As for the constructive criticism, I always do listen, but I don't always accept the premises of others' arguments....same as most people. The out of balance prop issue JUST came up. It wasn't present on prior flights (that I know of) so why would I assume there's an issue before I took off and saw symptoms? Do you take off your props before each and every flight and balance them? Vibration and osculation are very similar, if not synonymous. I appreciate there may be better ways of communicating complex ideas, but we don't rehearse, and don't edit - get used to my "mis-speaks". @ 3:30 - Yes, that was an uncharacteristically closer than usual pass. I made a mistake on my previous maneuver that lined me up very poorly. As you know, risk is heightened by increased exposure, so I try to minimize such mistakes ever causing a dangerous condition, let alone an actual injury. I don't often make passes like that, as the planes inertia could carry it into us, in the event of an exceptionally un-lucky, mal-timed failure at the bottom of that maneuver. I try to fly in such a way that if the plane had a serious malfunction, we'll have an out. I definitely appreciate that "anything can happen" and take this into account as I chose my flight paths. I do loads of close flying, as you know. You didn't see it, as it happened off camera between flights on the second lipo flights, but I talked with Megan about a safety concern I was having. She had been creeping outside of my comfort zone, which is usually to my right, just within my peripheral vision, so I can KNOW exactly where she is, thus keeping ME between her and the plane, even when I come close. We got that worked out right away, but some things aren't meant for on camera - this was one of them. I want you to know that I try my best to keep people safe. I've never caused an injury while flying, but don't want to start now, either.
@ModelAV8RChannel
@ModelAV8RChannel 4 года назад
He did give you the solution...use a better quality aftermarket spinner. Your way is not valid for two reasons. First you are doing it on a plugged up, live plane...which is dangerous even with a throttle cut. Second you are guessing which blade is the heavy/lighter one and guessing how much tape to use to solve it. A proper balancer will instantly show the heavier of the blades and you can better judge how much tape, paint, glue to use to begin with. A much faster, more precise, and safer way to do it. It is what they are made for. Again...I'm not picking on you. I have 35 years in the hobby and have worked in the industry. This is meant to be constructive...to make you a better, safer model aviator. Somebody taught us...we are trying to pass it on to you. Please don't be offended. The best pilots/modelers are never too good to learn. I am a forever student and learn constantly. No shame in not knowing something yet, but too much ego to be taught can be a problem. I try not to be that guy...and respectfully urge you to do the same. Happy, safe flying friend!
@ModelAV8RChannel
@ModelAV8RChannel 4 года назад
I replied to your comment to Cubcrazy. And no...I don't balance my props before every flight. I do balance my props before installation as most (with the exception to Xoar...which are balanced at the factory) are not balanced beforehand. In the event of a sudden change in vibration...I unplug the plane and inspect it...lots of things can cause vibration...if it comes down to the prop I take it off and do what i suggest in my other reply. Glad to hear safety is in mind when you film.

Carbon Z Cub SS bit.ly/30P5mUA Carbon Cub S2 bit.ly/3bS2r3O Both are good choices, but I honestly think you'll BETTER enjoy the Carbon Z Cub SS 2.1m - especially if you still "have it"...you might be frustrated with some of the intricacies of the Carbon Cub S2 1.3m - watch my newer video on the 2.1m SS (it was re-released recently) and also check out my videos on the 1.3m

Maybe show how you can build in navigation light and strobes in this big plane?

I have tons of LED mods on my channel. Here's a couple planes.... Cessna 182 UMX (Check the playlists, and you can watch what you want to see) Aero Commander UMX, Spitfire 1.2m, etc...tons of them, but it's been a while since I did one.

Good luck! I think you might enjoy some of the aspects of electric, but I bet you'll hate that it's quite ;)

There's no such thing as a Ready to Fly of this plane (that I know of...) There IS another, smaller one that Horizon Hobby markets...is that what you're thinking of? Also, not sure MotionRC is selling it...but not sure why

My carbon cub SS will be here in a week.... we can’t get the 5000mah 6s batteries in Canada. Are the 4000mah spectrum 6s batteries good enough?? I saw you used a couple 4000 packs and got decent flight time and seemed like lots of power.

Yes. You can also do TWIN 3S in Series, if you wish.

Be very careful around ZOP power lipos they are known to catch fire on the charger. Ebay sell HRB 6s 5000mah 100c are $99au and are very very good in my rc helicopters and sports planes! Great plane I'm maidening mine today.

What charger are you using to charger your bigger batteries like your 6s? I left the hobby awhile ago and have returned. Bought myself this carbon cub but need a good charger for the money!
