The thing is, even though the trader lied and kept the key from you, he was technically in the right in preventing you from continuing Most people boil it down to him lying to keep the player in Chapter 1 so he won’t leave him behind to be lonely and while that reason is partially true, there is a more selfless part to it The Trader says on multiple occasions that escape is impossible and that you’re only heading deeper into the forest’s jaws, saying “The forest wants to devour you. You're heading straight into its jaws” in the old woods hide out. The entire time the player wasn’t escaping from the forest but the opposite, going inwards till he finds the center If that really was the way out, wouldn’t the Trader at least attempt to head to the Swamp as he already had the key on his person The trader knows that heading deeper into the woods is practically a death trap, which is why he spends his time in the Chapter one area, the safest and (technically) outermost part of the woods If he were to give you the key, he would be leading you to your own demise at the hands of the unforgiving forest I know this doesn’t take away from the selfish primary reason that he kept the key from you so that you wouldn’t leave him alone but nobody does stuff for purely selfish or selfless reasons. His decisions likely stemmed from both selfish (loneliness) and selfless (preventing you from marching to your death) reasons The Trader is still the most sympathetic character of the bunch
Well the Trader was one of the brothers-in-arms of the protagonist so all of you had duplicate keys. So him seeing his old buddy gave him a relief. But you're probably not even human anymore that would be the doctor's fault but somehow it did help you fight of starvation just eat woods that is abundant and lots of mushrooms. Spoilers though this game is really tragic.
Mark, the reason the Trader had 'liar' scraped onto his helmet is because he had the same key you had been looking for since the very beginning, he knew you needed it but chose to hide it.
Oh. That's the Trader's corpse. I always thought that during the night one of Us wanted to return, but the creatures got to him before he could enter the hideout, I didn't realize that was the Trader.
The fact that Mark keeps saying "my friend is dead" makes it even sadder. I've never been this sad about a video game character's death in years. R.I.P Trader. :(
I hate how much luck mark is getting every night he survives. Its nothing like it was when I played it and got ass raped every single night in the swamp.
@@theq4602 Currently playing through the game again. The same thing is happening to me every night in the swamp too. A fuckin diggy underground boi keeps appearing in my house and fucking me in the corner until I die.
@@homunkulus819 Honestly, nights in the Swamp weren't so bad for me, usually I would get one or 2 of those centipede, but one shot from the hunting rifle kills them instantly. I'm pretty sure they pop up if you stand in one place for too long because I got at least 1 pretty much every night.
@@NinjaMaster-og8ti after a couple nights they just stopped spawning for me, or at least until I moved into the garage room or whatever it's called, I only started getting human spiders which were surprisingly easy to kill, all you need is an upgraded shovel to kick their asses. Try to make jokes in darkwood. It's not a place for humor really. It's a constant stream of questions and showing how everything you choose to help, only makes things worse.
baylith katan hes a RU-vidr it’s kinda his Job to make jokes but I get that it’s a ominous that has a dread handing over so maybe marking no jokes the better thing to do
Mark in the previous episode: "God, there's no wood around here! No wood!!" Mark in the beginning of this episode: *completely ignores the 15 planks being sold by the trader*
@Mcarthy Wasright why? It seems all the other mushroom monsters other than the exploders were fine and healthy (if you can call anything healthy In this game)
This playthrough is what I look forward to most every day- haven't felt like this since your Oneshot playthrough. Thank you for sharing your experience with such an incredible game!!
Everybody talking about the Trader yet my boi, the science kid, who wanted to go to space, actually pulled off creating a rocket ship to escape but the forest said NO and he flew into the new area and died. Conveniently crash landing in the junkyard.
Somehow I'm certain you did not in fact sob over an imaginary character in a game you didn't play. But hey I'm just an honest person so... I don't just say sh*t online for likes. My heart is shattered by the prospect of people liking a lie that proclaims false feelings for a fake person.
I have never been so heartbroken by a character death. The trader was one of if not the last good-natured people in darkwood left. And he just gets killed in the most brutal way possible trying to find his friend ;-;
The trader is not a good guy. He tells the player that there is no way out of the forest whilst he himself has the key out to the road home. Which is why someone scratched “liar” into his helmet
@@michaelprice3040 Actually, if you play the game to the end, you will realise that he wasn't lying about the woods, since you were really going deeper into it. So for the things that he did lie, he did it so to protect you, which doesn't make him a bad person

Emiliano Zapateados man I hope you're a bot because otherwise you need to grow a brain. Religion is ok in some aspects (although I feel like you shouldn't need a higher power to tell you what to do, you can find that for yourself), but taking the Bible literally is just illogical and stupid. It was written by people like you and me thousands of years ago, why should we listen to them? Especially because they can't possibly know what our modern society is like.
Trader is actually you, a clone of created the woods. You'll notice that the key the trader had was off in a way, like it's not as detailed as the original, that means the key is also a copy made by the woods.
Just realized something, The first trader (may they rest in peace ;-;) had a diving suit helmet and related gear, do y'all think he came from the swamp into the Darkwoods/Woods to escape, hence the warning and the desire for the protagonist to stay in the woods
the knife when thrown is highly damaging and can be retrieved... just saying... not that you will ever read this soo. At least you discovered the quick attack in part 11. x) Very helpful, especially against the chompers in part 9 and 10.
The poor trader he was just lonely imagine being him and you find a "friend" and you ask him to stay but he doesnt so you look for him and these guys just replace you and you just get beheaded with your friend just seeing your body
Also the trader kept the key you needed to get out because he had found a friend and the trader was another outsider(the polish military who were trying to contain the woods also the main character was in the woods because his group either got killed or had some people escape) meaning they might know each other
When I got to the part where Mark finds the trader's body I paused the video and just sat there frowning for 15 minutes straight R.I.P Trader. May you find freedom from those dangerous woods.
Though it deals less damage and consumes the same amount of weapon durability so it's not like you need it that much. It's reserved for Permadeath mode for emergency. It's not like health is a rare commodity, just drink from the well daily and you can save the bandages.

It is sad. The Trader was such a nice guy... Calling him liar for trying to prevent you from leaving for your Doom isn't right either... Funny how this man made a game of Darkness and foreboding madness kinda bearable... :( You'll be missed, Friend Trader...
I still feel bad for leaving the other trader behind. Especially cause he even asks of you not to leave him.. Edit: Welp he's dead, too. Amazing... ;-;
As far as I know, there is no way to save him either. The only way for the Trader to survive, is for you to never complete the game and stay in the First Chapter.
@@Alizudo Yeah.... I searched on youtube and google for ways to save him, but it's only people announcing his corpse or others asking for ways to save him.
What makes it worse is he asked for Mark to stay. But that is not the saddest part even, the trader came to his house every single morning, he called Mark his friend. The mushrooms on his suit even suggested that he was infected. The trader was not just alone, he was dying.
@@ItzameEmily No, the Trader was a mushroom replica himself. The wood likes to make mushroom like copies of people who were there, except it usually messes up (by splicing more than one person together, mixing up details etc.). Everyone and everything made of these white, gooey mushrooms is a replica. Remember the man in the tunnel who pulled a "bullet" out of his head? He was a replica of the corpse you find a few feet further down the tunnel. Mark didn't notice, he ran past it but that man had a hole in his head and a wooden cross. The other "man" who couldn't get up (because he was a shroom grown to the ground) had a bullet hole and a "soft cross". There are several fake characters, some of which Mark hasn't met yet so I won't say who it is but you'll notice.
Human centipede: Already a thing Darkwood: We have something even worse that can yeet their limbs at you. It will be the pinnacle of your nightmares. And then there was the human spider..

The Vile Ruler you go to an abandoned house where supposedly there was to be a wedding before the plague. You enter to a big space for dances and see the ghost of the bride to be, dancing and telling you to join her. She doesn’t attack you or anything. Then you enter the dinning room, where there’s a broken radio playing some distorted music, and a man at the front of the table smashing his head against it saying “we’ve been waiting for you”, saying a word every time he hit the table. If you turn off the radio you’ll hear the ambience now has some drums going at the frequency of the head smashing. You enter the door behind the man and see many trees and many brides dancing and calling to you. If after a while you return the man is gone and a door from the side will begin to get smashed by something that says “WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU” and a red chomper with a wedding dress will enter saying dance with me. When you kill it you can leave the place.
Holy shit, is this what the new generation of bots looks like? Lmao, I thought the giveaways were bad (In case someone’s reading this after the spam has been removed, I‘m not talking about Scarecrow‘s comment)

Emiliano Zapateados but I mean some people don’t. They don’t. Or maybe they have trauma. Who knows, people choose how they want to live and you still gotta’ respect it.
Lore dump (spoilers obviously): You are an outsider, the people sent in by the government before Darkwood overgrew. Sent to investigate.... Something... The woods began to grow and the plague began, some made it out, others died or became trapped like yourself. Before the events of the game you were tied to trees by savages and cloned by the white liquid. This created the trader. He is your clone. After your escape, the doctor finds you and the game begins. The reason the trader has your memories, a fake copy of your key, and a copy of your journal, yet doesnt want you to find "the road home" is because... You have the plague, and have convinced yourself thats what youre doing. But you are doing everything but go home.... You are slowly crawling "into it's jaws".
Mark: "Cottage by the junkyard" My rational brain: this is Darkwood, it is going to be terrifying and bad My brain that has spent too much time on the internet: "COTTAGE??? A HOME? A LOVELY LITTLE PLACE TO INHABIT WITH FRIENDS??" :D
Mark: "finds pliers" Also mark: Ooh Ooh pliers, someone make a markiplier joke. Me: And markiplier was markipleased to find his markipliers. Who knows what they were to be used on, a fence, markiwire, a gate. All I know is he was very happy with his markipliers.
7:24 I love how Mark complains about the eyes in the ground (which al things considered aren’t the worst things in this swamp) when suddenly a giggly mushroom man climbs from the ground behind him kills a dog and explodes. Maybe be greatful when the worst thing you have worry about is gross floor eyes.
Damn. All he spoke of was how you two were in it together. He saved you from the doctor, checked on you almost everyday. He saw you as a brother. Damn that hit the feels.
He's a liar because he had the key to Door 21 the entire time. The key you were trying to get from the Doctor. The Trader could have given you the key at any time, but lied about it just so you'd stay with him
@@Alizudo Oh wow, I didn't think about it that way! Kinda makes me a bit less sad for him. Still sad that he died, but it makes you look at him from a different angle.
@@Jack-vu5dp Yeah, no, imma call bull on that. You can't force or deceive somebody into being your friend, and you can't build your friendship on lies. What he did is selfish and not something a friend would do. Imagine you want something, no - *need* something, and you can't get it for whatever reason. And then you learn that a person who you thought was your friend had that thing the whole time, but they *purposely* hid it from you, just so you stayed with them. That's not what friends do, that's not friendship, that person was just thinking about themselves and used you so they could have you. Big oof.
@@salhb737tm2 Ironically no, the Three used to be the traders through the whole game, The Trader was a character later added to the game. That said, theories say that the protagonist, you, are likely the one who killed him for "lying" about there being an exit, though speculation does say it's possible it was the Three as well, because they have a bag that smells strongly of mushrooms, possibly the Trader's bag

"What the hell is even happening?" is my thoughts and feelings exactly. It's really strange the way the Doctor keeps referring to the character and the way he talks about him and "his kind". "You don't belong to this land. You weren't here when the forest was born." Who is he and where'd he come from? He/they came before the trees he said, what does that mean? And how?? And is the wolf man gonna show up again??? I have so many questions and I can't wait to (hopefully) get the answers to them.
Some of the answers are dependent on which route you take. There are two main routes out of the swamp, the "obvious" one and a more out-of-the-way one. The second one gives huge lore drops about the player character and their backstory while the other really doesn't.
If you look up the top comments they explain the character's origins pretty well, or if you look up wiki. He is one of the 'Outsiders' who was part of the military that meant to control the woods, but then his group probably got separated and he got stranded on his own. Wolfman will reappear in Chapter 2, but you can't interact with him anymore. Choosing the musicians path will make him come after you
Well, damn... I'm starting to sympathize with the Doctor here. Mark's actions have been killing people without him even realizing it until their dead bodies quite literally show up out of nowhere. Maybe the Doctor is right when he says that Mark is like a disease, just killing everyone it comes close to.
He literally isn't reading comments to help him with the game, because back in part 1 people gave him tips, and he didn't know what to do with items or the base by episode 5. It's kinda frustrating honestly, cuz he's also doing this with his Minecraft playthrough
@@chubbybunny6975 it's more fun to find that on his own anyway. Don't worry about let's players not playing optimally and you'll enjoy the video a lot more.
Sub to Lazarbeam it is implied that the being which created this world creates copies of things, like the Wolfman is an anthropomorphic version of the Hunter (the corpse in the hunters house), and (infected people come from the woods, and are made human like, Wolfman and the Mushroom Granny, she was a mushroom that became a person), however the trader and the protagonist are members of a group called the outsiders, who existed before the woods did, so the trader is not a copy of the protagonist but is simply a friend.
Eh, not sure how bad i would feel. Dude had "Liar" etched on his helmet because he had a copy of they key you need from the very beginning. He knew you needed it to get home. He knew you were looking for it above everything else but chose to keep it from you. Every interaction with you he was lying to you, keeping you basically imprisoned in the woods with him. He could leave any time. He could have even done as the doctor did and taken you through the tunnel and led you out. He chose to keep you there, trapped.
@@raeishimura I interpreted it a completely different way. From the very beginning when he saved you, he seemed to know of the danger of the woods. He had a copy of the key but not only did he not give it to you, he actively tried convincing you not to leave the starting area to go to the swamp as you got closer to getting the key from the doctor. Seemed more like he was trying to keep you safe. As for the liar part, idk who scratched that in his helmet or if it was him himself, but I felt like that was reframing how the night before you leave you assure him that you'll stick together through these trying times, and then just leave him behind to die.
@@raeishimura The word liar could have meant something between him and three, he knew them and he lied to them about something so they killed him for it
