I was at a local car show/swap meet admiring a really slick model A Tudor for sale. The owner was saying 'Yeah i did this and that blah blah blah'. I noticed an older guy standing off to the side. As i walked away he said that he was the one that did all the work, the owner paid him for it. What a choad. NEVER take credit for another persons labor

I can relate to that. Having built several cars over the years, an individual who shall remain nameless was showing off his Model A Woody at a local show. Shooting the s**t about how he'd built the car from the ground up, not realising that I was stood right behind him. My wife who was stood next to me and not known for suffering fools, chirped in and said "No you didn't - my husband built it & never charged you a penny" !! Could have cut the air with a knife 😂😂

At the end of the day,if you have any old car and are DRIVING it, does it matter? Make it safe, reliable, and fun. So much better than just sitting and rotting away in a garage/storage.

Yes, it is better that it is being driven instead of rotting away, but I can't support sub-framing, putting Chevy engines in Fords, putting IFS on pre-war Fords, etc., as it completely alters the car in such a way that it is no longer what it appears to be and would be very difficult, if not impossible, to return to stock. I refuse to support that.

How do we expect to influence the next generation if they are never exposed to them? If they aren't driven they are wasting away.

I'm in my 70's, been trying to liquidate since I was 50! Oh yeah I sell, I sell all the time, every opportunity, but life happens. You know exactly what I mean, rare part, being nearly given away, 50-100% to be made flipping it, how can you say no? I have a almost 60 year collection. Downsized considerably, when we were in business, my partner and I had three barns full. NO barns anymore, but every inch of storage overloaded. Twenty pounds of crap in a ten pound sack. AACA always been snobby. In the pre-Carlisle days, when Hershey was the only game, you didn't dare mention hot rod! It was like blasphemy, some vendors flat out would not sell to you, if mentioned hot rod. Carlisle changed that crap. Bingo on the builds too! I have a 38 Chevy sedan I'm doing old style, but heaving the torque tube. Using a 261 truck engine, 55 truck rear, so it's 4:11's, but still 6 lug, can still run the original hubcaps, and using a 55 Chevy OD trans, so it'll cruise with 4:11s. That is old style to me. My 34 Ford coupe was built in the 50's, originally J2 Olds powered, Cad/LaSalle trans, early Ford truck banjo rear, but was 327 SBC by the time I bought it in the 60's. Your talks always amusing, great to see younger guys so knowledgeable, and into it. Carlisle started in 74 so it is the 50th!

Hi Matt and Mike This is Charlotte Grossarth…I live in Ft. Myers Fl. Pete is a friend of ours for many years. My husband would talk to Pete on the phone…that’s how we learned about Iron Trap Garage. We both would watch all your videos. My Husband passed 4 months ago…I still watch Iron Trap. I spoke to Pete about you Matt…I love your Pod Casts. In watching this one I relate to what you are saying about guys saying…”I’m not going to do this car stuff any more…I have to get out of it”. But then before they know it they are buying more old stuff…cars and parts. We have and my husband “had” the greatest car friends!! The comradery between them all is a blessing. And many of these guys were wonderful to me in helping with my husbands cars and “stuff” after his passing. Because they loved him. During season here in Ft. Myers there will be about 25 of these guys…every Thursday morning they meet at one of the guys garage….they call it “Cars and Coffee”. Coffee and donuts as they all sit around talking about their. cars…car problems and anything car oriented. These same guys would come to my husbands garage to help him in any way they could on his car project. I want to tell you there is a very strong connection with each one of these guys…specially my husband to what they do….to their cars….building their cars…accumulating car parts all of it.. This is what keeps all these guys going. A focus in life of what they love. Yes it gets frustrating at times… maybe they get tired…and threaten to stop what they love doing but it will never happen. They will never let go. Stop and do what? They are connected deeply to their craft….connected deeply to each other. My husband Rich still kept a connection to his car friends where we lived in NY and all area around. Moving to Fl. In 2016 did not relinquish those friendships and cars. While in Fl. he made many new friends with that same desire. If you want to do an an amazing interesting Pod Cast and Garage video come to Fl. anytime in Jan. Thru May….go to “”Cars and Coffee” and do a Pod Cast with 25 guys….and then go to some of their garages where you will see their lives…..what keeps them going….what makes them happy…what gives them quality of life. All close by. I was so very grateful for the many many decades that Rich had building cars…giving him a focus in life of something he loved dearly. He had a heart disease for 20 years. It’s all the buying..selling…building the love of it all that kept him alive…he loved helping other guys with whatever there issue was with cars. There are ups and downs and they all get frustrated at times but they will never give up…. Thank you Matt for all you do….thank you for being kind and understanding. Thank you for all your videos and your Pod Casts that add to what all these guys love….it puts quality in their lives. Please come to Ft. Myers and visit a village of wonderful “real car men” who love what they do to the end. On the day Rich died he asked to call a few of the guys one at a time….to have a last car talk and he told them how much they meant to him. Thank you……Charlotte Grossarth….

The whole point of messing about with old cars is that the rule book goes out the window. It doesn't matter if a car runs a stock pre-war motor or a Toyota V6. If somebody has put a lot of hours into it and they've done a good job, good on them. Good podcast. I'm still keen to hear a little about Matt's VW.

Where they put a Nissan straight-six into a mid-60s Mustang. Because I knew the purists would be going bananas over it. When you own a car, you can do whatever you like to it. There will be people watching Iron Trap who dislike Matt using that Cadillac motor. That's their bad luck.

I love nostalgically dressed small block Chevies and snap up any old sbc parts that pop up on Marketplace. The market for that stuff is picking up too. As far as young people not getting into it I think they still are. I was at Princess auto (Canadian Harbour Freight) and a young guy that parked next to me in a Mitsubishi Lancer Rally Art asked me about my Pontiac . Found out he has a 59 he is working on and then he pointed out my chrome reverse rims to his friend saying to him they are legit chrome reverse and how they were built. So there is still hope.

I've said it here before but I'll say it again. I'm not a Ford guy or even a hotrod guy. I support this channel because you guys are saving cars that are older than me (I'm 65). I own a 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster Town Sedan with @ 56,000 original miles. I'm an "if it ain't broke, keep it original" kinda guy. What I love about your channel is that you typically keep whatever is practical and put a hotrod or custom spin on the rest - and you've got a $h!tload of knowledge and experience to do it well and make it cool. I love that. If my Stovebolt 6 was all clapped out I'd be looking at classic options to "make it better". But it's good so I keep driving it to the local shows. Please keep doing what you're doing and trying to bring younger people into the hobby. I hope one of my children will take my "old Chevy" in the future. I'm in another (completely unrelated) hobby currently suffering from a similar situation. Too bad we don't have someone like you to help us figure it out.

Back in the early 80's I bought an old Henry j drag car from the 60's. One piece glass flip front end, straight axle, bbc, olds rear end. Had sat in a garage untouched since it's racing days, 15 or 20 years before I got it. It had a title so I put plates on it and cruised it. Actually it was my only car. But it was seriously hated on at the cruise-ins because everyone thought it should be dropped down with independent frotend, no one liked my rear tires sticking thru radiused wheel wells. Everyone was into billet everything, and easter egg paint etc. I personally loved it. And today it would be the hit of any show or cruise in. Drive what ya like.

But I worked to put myself through junior high , high school , 2 years of college before going into the Air Force to get more education ! Now that I'm retired and disabled veteran it looks like that I'll never get to live that dream of building a street rod or hot rod because of the cost !

I've had my car judged at shows, I've been a judge at shows. I'm in UK and USA clubs. The USA clubs seem to only promote originality at all costs, and any kinds of modifications are frowned upon. In the UK, the exact same cars tend to be more modified to the point that they have a modified class which is bigger than the standard class. My car is modified, with period mods. People may sneer at my car because of the mods, and call it a hot rod as if it's an insult! I don't care, I HATE snobby people with a vengance, and prefer people with dirt under their fingernails and scrapes and cuts on their hands! One show I was at, I didn't win a trophy, but when I started my engine, I heard someone say, "he doesn't need a prize, he is already driving his!". That one remark was worth 100 shiny tin trophies!

I’m reviving a street rod that was built to do street rod stuff but this street rod has been around as a hopped local model A since the mid ‘60’s. It has its life and its stories but it needed some upgrades and repair so it isn’t hibernating any more. My 84 year young father in law owned the car since 1973. It has seen the street rod nationals a dozen times. It has a damned ugly 289 in it with a one wire alternator, lol. Pops is a ford guy. I’m just jazzed to have it. The stories make it live. To change it back to something more traditional would be more fake than what I’m doing. It’s just not the right car for that. Hope to be cruising again this summer.

I would like to add my 2 cents on the Chevy V8s. Back in my youth, in the fifties, I was buying 'little books' and putting them inside my text books so that I could keep up with what was going on in California. There were lots of flatheads and then came the Olds, Caddys, Hemis and then in 1955 the new Chevy V8. Every month there was something new being done. But after a long time things changed. Innovation changed and Chevy V8s grew in size and other motors disappeared. The SBC became like belly buttons. Everybody had one. The specs on most street rods got boring; 350, 350 TH, 9"... Personally I missed seeing something different under every hood. The SBC became so popular because its external dimensions were so close to a flathead, it was an easy fit into an old Ford. Now that I am old and have one foot in the grave, I have reconciled with the SBC. They are a great motor and as nostalgic as you can get. As for the Ford in a Ford or Chevy in a Chevy, that was typically circle track rules. And you had to turn left.

I went to a local hot rod show yesterday, lots of nice cars, I spoke to a couple of people there. No spares being sold, just the usual polish stands (B.S. in a bottle), the huge stand of overpriced low quality chinese tools, another huge stand of toy cars, the hot rods on display all polished to within an inch of their life! Most of owners were over 70 years old, and mostly the cars were bought, not built. All a little sad really. Oh well.

My plan was to hop up the banger, put in an over drive and juice brakes so it would be easier to drive and enjoy. Drove all the way to give him the money and pick up the car. Forgot I had a Mooneyes shirt on. Old timer took a look at me and made up a quick lie about how he forgot that he had promised the car to a friend and ran back in his house! A couple of years ago I acquired a 'glass 27 T body. I am in the process of making a track roadster. I bought a track nose and a tube front axle from Speedway Motors with disc brakes and split wishbone rod ends. I have a disc brake rear axle from a 1987 Camaro, a BW 3spd OD trans, a 1948 flathead bored .040 over with aluminum heads aluminum 2bbl intake, and a Holley Sniper 2bbl electronic fuel injection. Plans are to mount a turbocharger on the front of the engine and boost through the Sniper injector. I have a set of stainless steel block hugger headers and 2 1/2" stainless elbows to connect the turbo. I have 20ft of 2x4" tubing to fabricate the frame and a sheet of 11ga steel to make the firewall, floor, fuel tank, Etc. I am building my own air ride suspension system and control links for both front and rear axles. I have a set of 1980 Camaro six-slot sport wheels 7x 15. Tires are 235/60x15 rear and 205/60x15 front. Crazy conglomeration of early look alike and modern components. I may call it the hypocrite mobile.

Pepple Beach did a Hot Rod class a few years ago that was extremely popular, so there is some hope... The AACA is really short-sighted with their hot rod policies... and their snobbery is still hard to take... I've driven some neat old cars in my time and loved every minute of it.. Worked after school in a local body shop and learned a bunch.. The body shop guy had a 1955 GMC 1/2 ton pickup with a 1957 Pontiac Tri-Power V-8 tied to a stock 4-speed Hydromatic. That thing was so much fun to drive. During my high school and college days I drove a 1952 Lincoln Capri 2-door hardtop, a 1954 Buick Special, a 1940 Ford Coupe with a 1955 Buick Roadmaster V-8, a 1938 Ford Coupe with a "built" Chevy small-block 265, a 1953 Dodge 1/2 ton pickup that was bone stock. All of them were a blast to drive. The one car that I had in my back yard and did not get around to building that I would love to have today was a 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk. I got the car (minus the supercharged V-8) from a friend of a friend, and just never had time to build it. I still miss that car... Now that I am retired, I may be able to build one more hot rod, but it is going to be a struggle due to arthritis in my hands.. I guess it depends on if I ever stumble across the right engine - something different like a Pontiac or Chrysler straight 8 flathead. I still have a couple of small-block Chevy 350s, one of which is a real Covette engine (granted, it is a 1974 smog-motor dog, but it has the right numbers on it - and you have to appreciate the real challenge of making it perform up to snuff). I really love the work your shop does. Find the old school stuff, make it safe and reliable to drive and put it back out there... The Lincoln is in a separate class, but the rest of the stuff is similar to cars I grew up with. Keep up the good work...

I can understand the argument with the small block chevy swap. I am guilty of it, pretty much any old Ford that comes into my grandfather and I's garage will end up with one. I think part of the problem is a lot of misunderstanding the small block Chevy. Since to most people it never really changed visually (although it did quite a bit) from 1955 through the mid 80s and they made millions of 350s over the more "traditional" sizes of 50s and early 60s. I've always had the stance of any 265,283,327 from 1967 and earlier is traditional. Reason 67 is the cutoff is 68 they went from a draft tube to a PCV system and got rid of the oil can and insert to a spin on style filter.

Restoring/preserving vs Hot Rodding vs modifying has been a serious bone of contention among us car guys. Here's my two cents; There is nothing wrong with souping up a flathead Ford for more speed and more power. Nothing wrong with putting in a later flathead that drops right in. Ditto for the trans. It is easy to return such cars to stock. But sub-framing, putting rack and pinion, which I hate, in an older car, putting IFS in a pre-war Ford, replacing the transverse springs in a pre-war Ford with longitudinal leaf springs, putting Chevy engines in Fords products and in Mopars, should be discouraged, as often those mods wind up destroying the car. It is no longer recognizable as the car it was built as.

I like your use of "nostalgia". My buddy's '29 roadster has a solid lifter, dual quad 265 with the Corvette 9 fin valve covers, Buick finned brakes, etc, but it's also sporting a T-5 because SoCal freeways. Sometimes, you have to make the break from "tradition" in order to enjoy your car. As far as a name for your podcast, "Iron Trap Yap" is my proposal.

Well my little hot rodded 40 ford PU, with it's chopped top, 6v flathead engine, big tires, lowered front end, black tuck and rolled upholstery, and flames is still wearing it's primer after 20 some odd years has been called a "Rat Rod". I'm not sure what category I'm in. Just looks like a normal Hot Rod from the 60s to me.

LOL The Concour guys are pissed because when we started the "Traditional" builds everyone started snapping up original parts....sometimes even if we knew we would never use them. Hell how many original parts were blowtorch "Modified"?.....that made their hobby suddenly get really expensive and there was a massive amount of competition over parts between us. I was never really into the "everything has to be pre X year" for the Traditional builds, because folks don't drive now(ESPECIALLY NOW) like they did in the 30's thru 50's. How many drivers tests even have questions on hand signals? Following distance is a thing of the past, if you leave enough room for stopping with drums especially non boosted drums all that happens is five people fill the gap. It was kind of funny in the 90's when the import scene was growing to see they were the kids building "Traditional rods" as they were all friends swapping this or modifying that and getting together to build someone's rice rocket. When we were the guys and gals building to a set format. Don't get me wrong "Traditional rods" are awesome if you can scrounge or afford the parts.....but I'm a run what ya like guy. Other then at specific shows I could care less what's being run and more interested in the person building it.

Making ugly cars kool, OK, but souping up a car designed to have a top speed of 90 so that it can go 130 is hardly safer.

First of all the podcast is great! Rarely would I spend nearly an hour listening to anyone talk about anything. Keep on just being yourself and talking about things that happen to everyone in the hobby. I once had an older guy say this about how and why the small block chevy is so over used as many people say it is. People can say what they want about the small block chevy, but the truth is, it's hard to argue with the horse power, how dependable they can be, parts availability and bang for your buck you get with one, and don't leave out their physical size which makes them easily fit in many engine bays that other engines can't. And that's why so many people choose and use them, because in many cases it's the most painless route to get your ride on the road. I was surprised the term "rat rod" wasn't talked about today as a hypocritical term or category that many people use these days for any car that doesn't meet their high standards.

Yes, alot of it seems to be about marketing to elite class of antique and or classic vehicle collectors. My priority is about making the machine usable, safley, cause they are a blast to drive, no one wants to cause damage by light use. Its a different idea of the craft, I like the idea of making the old beuties usable, while at the same time making it safe while respecting the style.

Last year I was at a guy's house and all he would say about his 1950 Ford truck was it had a crate motor. Finally a bunch of us went with him to check it out. Being a GM kinda guy I was expecting to see another SBC under the hood. Nope it was a 302 and I was pleasantly surprised. I don't have anything against a SBC under the hood of your old Ford but I think it's just done way to much.

Regarding the high cost of not only parts but project cars as well...no one can deny that in just the last 5 years the "norm" selling or asking prices have gone up tremendously. Like I've stated in my opinions previously on this issue, one main reason is the goofy TV auctions and ePAY sellers trying to hook an idiot who'll pay quadruple over the actual value. IMO, in a few short years the average Joe will be priced out of the hobby and it'll be just for the wealthy. Especially the wealthy that don't turn their own wrenches and pay ungodly amounts of cash to have someone else do the build. The home builder will be scrambling to find original parts to keep their vintage car on the road or settle for cheaply made Chinese garbage they'll toss in the trash in short order. I find smoking deals all the time BUT I look numerous times during the day on different selling formats...every single day. The other thing I notice is the mean spirited ass hats that comment regarding a part you or someone else may have for sale. The goofy ass purists that slam the slightest non stock aspect of that part (like paint color) is amazing to me. It seems to me they just like to jump on your post and flex their grey matter about something extremely trivial in order to look all knowing. I love the vintage vehicle past time but I'm sure glad I picked up my 3 old Ford trucks 5 years ago. If I bought them today I could MAYBE afford to purchase one. Maybe. And that's in just 5 short years!

I've kind of lived a dual life for 50+ years, in as much as I usually had both hot rods & "original" cars and belonged to an AACA chapter for more than 30 years. My experience has been, with the majority of AACA members, is that the older guys who actually restored their own cars, were into hot rods in their youth and are way more accepting of hot rodded cars, than the "monied class" who know nothing of actually building a car, but just pay to have everything done for them. Maybe they're worried having hot rods around, may lessen the value of their over-restored vehicles that they put a fortune into. I try to never be judgmental avoid the useless tirades, and enjoy both original & hot rod cars.

It sounds like the Eastern club scene is more status, exclusivity and money-related. It's funny that hot rodding jalopies has been going on for over a hundred years, and hot rod kids were seen as wild by the old farts, and the old farts have just evolved and reproduced their exclusive ways. It would be interesting to see whether any of the snobs were hot rodders as kids, or they've just been strict traditionalists throughout their lives. The kid of guys who iron their Levis, ya know?

I have always tried to keep an open mind and respect other people’s builds/cars. I have listened to people trash on a car just because it isn’t built the way they would do it. No on tells them how to build their car, if they have one, so don’t trash on someone else’s car. Another thing that bugs me is how there are those that will put a Chevy engine in anything but if you talk about putting something different in a Chevy you become the worst person on the planet. Just my point of view. Build your car how you want.

Hot Rodding has been around since the first cars were introduced. Men immediately saw the value in racing being a promotional tool for their car brands, businesses, etc... and a fun and dangerous activity for adrenaline junkies to get their fix!! The purists are like the snotty Karens that look down their noses at you if you are not monied gentry. Hot Rodding is a great example of American Ingenuity, and the continued pursuit of excellence, pushing the envelope, almost all of the current state of the art automotive technologies were derived from racing. Snot bags are always going to be douchey, what you do is an awesome preservation of our national history!! and not at all snobby or douchey!!
