In this video I show how I set up doors in order to spray them when I am working on interior millpacks. This technique is basically how I set the doors up by myself (no one to help move or hold doors).
I show footage of me spraying primer and top coat paint on, but am not focusing on the actual painting part for this video.
I also show how I minimize overspray from getting on the ceiling and other doors, walls, etc.
I use Elmer's carpenter wood filler on these doors, and sand the filler and factory primer with a Festool orbital sander and hand sand the reveals and the edges. Doors, cabinets, and trim work get thoroughly cleaned and then caulked prior to applying primer.
Please use all safety precautions when doing painting and other renovation, remodeling, and decorating tasks.
Use Personal Protective Equipment such as a Respirator equipped with new Organic Vapor Cartridges, hearing protection, gloves, and protective clothing as needed. Never use spray equipment that has safety features removed like the spray gun housing guard...or ladders with damaged/missing parts.
Use Equipment like ladders, spray pumps, sanders, razor knifes, etc correctly and safely or serious injury or even death can occur.
XC Painter's videos are only sharing ideas and some methods that work for Him. XC Painter shall not be held liable for any individual's actions or injuries to themselves or others' property and/or person.
Never use equipment that you are not fully competent at using. You must have understanding and knowledge of the risks of each particular tool or piece of equipment that you are using on your project..

Set up 20 doors today using your method and it worked well. The joist hangers are flexible enough to keep the screws from tearing out if you need to wrangle the doors a bit--nice when working by yourself. Thanks!

Great system. Seen many others, this one is much better (joist hangers!). I would use a washer underneath the screw points of the joist hangers to keep the hangers slightly elevated from the top edge of the door in order to keep a from sealing a ‘weld line’ between the door and the joist hanger. Great idea, though, thanks.
@XCPainter
@XCPainter Год назад
Good thought. I always try to make sure the metal does not hang over or close to the edge to avoid bridging. You can try washers, but it could create a little play, maybe, maybe not.

@@XCPainter I’ve done it before. Not all connected together and not with joist hangers, but with straight sticks - two of them screwed into the top perpendicular to the line of the door, sticking straight out front and back of the door. It lets me prop the door against a wall to paint one side, then I use the sticks as ‘handles’ to flip it (walk it) to the other side. If you use 1” diameter washers there’s no play at all as long as you tighten the screw down well. But the the joist hangers is something I had never thought of. I have four 36” heavy solid core interior commercial doors I have to clear coat. I’ll try your joist hanger method. I’m sure it will work fine. Thanks again.

I'm watching this after trying to do it last night with two 8 ft 2x4s and 2x4 scraps to put underneath them. It worked but I don't like the way it's set up so I'm going to redo it this way. Thanks for the video bro

Everything Im doing these days is unfamiliar, have to learn everything about tasks/ repairs; where to even start, hours sorting thru gluts of almost helpful tutorials. Dealing with every step on my own, plus all the little things a grammy does. Buying a paint sprayer gun tomorrow.. Exterior doors and outdoor furniture first, to gain confidence i think

It's not easy, trying to learn without in person training. Anything is doable... but it's like if I tried to be a mechanic or electrician or any profession without training.

I like the cardboard, but I think it’s easier to use a wand with a pivot for the housing on the end to keep the spray pointed downwards and that way you’re not squatting down constantly on every spray run.

Great technique, I’ve been a painter for 11 years and I really appreciate your help in sharing your experiences. I do it almost the same way, I’ll try it in my next project using little pieces of wood that use under the doors. Having the pieces of cardboard above the doors is great 👍. Where are you located?

Great tip ! Might try this out next job , just wondering if you ever spray water based undercoat or primer on doors and trim ?
@XCPainter
@XCPainter 6 лет назад
I don't prefer using waterborne if there is a lot of mdf to prime and even on wood trim, due to the tannins that can bleed through, and also oil sands so much nicer.

Great video. After all the doors are dry what do you do with them when needing to emulsion the room you've got them in? Thanks.
@XCPainter
@XCPainter 2 года назад
With this method, I would typically leave them in the middle of the room for as long as possible. Better than leaning them against a wall (that happens too though) and risk them getting bowed. When walls are done I either hang them up or leave them off for carpet installation if necessary
@danielwoolcock7267

@@XCPainter thanks for the reply. I suppose if they were dry I could put some clear poly sheets over them if needing to do the ceiling etc.

Just curious. Do you like your new door painting system better with the wood on top? No need to use cardboard or to set them up.
@XCPainter
@XCPainter 5 лет назад
I do like the new method a lot. But there are advantages in both methods. Maybe like on high end jobs using the brackets or standing them all up, you can check them all, check out the finish, or do any prep needed .

@XCPainter

Richard Paulus there is a gap where the rails and stiles meet the panel. It is inconsitent and bridged partially from the factory primer. It's unsightly, so I prep those so everything looks solid and shiny.

do the doors stick to the wood blocks? I had issues with that. What about the cardboard as well
@XCPainter
@XCPainter 3 года назад
Yes, the blocks can possibly stick to the doors (or the floor). One method that solves this problem, is using blocks that are smaller width than the door, and screw or finish nail them to the bottom so they don't overhang the edge... then paint has nothing to bridge to. The cardboard up top hasn't been an issue for me since they don't make a lot of contact with the door.

do you spray the primer and top coat in the same day
@XCPainter
@XCPainter 7 лет назад
Hello. This is a slow dry oil primer, so has to be overnight, or even 24 hour dry time. I primed the whole upstairs trim package and doors in one day, then topcoated in the afternoon the next day. Long oil primer by choice on this one since it lays down so beautifully as it dries.
