Hey Gang! Got a cool one today. We shoot our trim color and it looks absolutely stunning. We also run you through how we clean our X7 with paint thinner, a lot of requests on our last video showing the cleaning process. And finally we showcase a product we found that we believe can really help a DIYer or homeowner get a flawless paint job on things that can be difficult to paint, such as doors and trim. We're not sponsored by StakPack, but not everyone has the spare hundred hours to learn how to master a sprayer and the paint along with it, so we're stoked that there's a first time friendly solution for the rest of the Gang. Thanks for watching and Happy Mother's Day!

As a professional painter here are a couple things I would suggest. First Amazon. They always have the fine finish tips even when the stores don’t. Second. I would not use an extension for fine finish applications. When you have an extension and you release the trigger the paint in the extension loses pressure to a point where the tip does not atomize it anymore and you get “spitting” big drops of paint on your finished surface. ( they do have valve you can buy that’s screws on the end of the extension behind the housing that closes once the pressure drops to a certain psi but it is heavy and puts strain on your wrist making it very uncomfortable for extended use) Third. You can wash the filter in the gun instead of replacing it. You only need to replace it once there is a hole or tear in the mesh itself.

Excellent suggestions. I also buy some knee high nylons and use them to filter the paint in the bucket before it goes into the pump.

I agree dennis, SW makes a tip that will reduce spitting and it has the added benefit of being articulating, which is cool but what you said holds. Th only thing I would add is it might be time for them to repack that gun if it's suddenly spitting the needle might not be coming back as fast as it used to, Titan guns have adjustment screws to for this and whenever I get to them they are always cranked down so tight.

Cover stain oil base primer from home depot is about $22 a gallon. It is marketed as no sanding necessary. Its oil base, bonds well, and levels really nice. Solution for the stack rack problem would be use washers between door and rack for the shorter doors and bring the racks out to the same point as the tallest door. Those sprayers cannot handle thinners and mineral spirits though.. Flammable liquids will ruin your sprayers internal seals and packings. With the better grade sprayers from Sherwin you can replace the pumps for under $300. Also you shouldn't mix latex paint and oilbase products in same sprayer. You run the risk of some oil based material being stuck in the line or pump coming out with your paint causing fish eye.. where the oil and latex paint separate on your finish product. Some advice for quick production good quality painting whole homes.. tape all casings and molding. Depending on cure time of trim paint use either the delicate surface yellow frog tape, or regular 3m blue painters tape if its been a few days. Caulk a bead over the edge of tape on trim to seal it. Use a wet rag and wipe the caulk away and only leave the film or a transparent layer over the edge of tape where you can see the tape through the caulk. This will seal all your tape and prevent bleeding. Making cutting everywhere the trim is much faster with the straight lines from the tape. Pull tape while paint is still wet on final coat as it will soften the caulk and help release in a cleaner line. As for painting the cut line on ceiling goes.. I use a medium stiff Purdy xl glide either 2.5 or 3".. swipe ceiling side of brush clean of paint on pale or handy cup.. before starting any lines swipe ceiling side of brush on wall close to your line to clean the excess paint off brush so it doesn't build up or grab the ceiling during the pull. Should be cutting (for right hand, start from left pull right in a more comfortable motion - for left hand start right and pull left) this is a more comfortable motion and will result in cleaner quicker cut lines on ceiling once you get it dialed in. Then smooth out the excess paint on wall with brush. My system goes roll-brush, brush-roll for my 2 coats of painting on walls. After first roll it shows imperfections that can be fixed while cutting in, and being able to 2nd coat the walls while compound dries is nice. For edges of tape wait until you're ready to roll the walls for bigger projects so the paint doesn't dry too fast on the tape and caulking before pulling it. I also use 2" tape to bump tape with roller to bring texture and extra coverage over the excess trim paint. Making covering the walls a quick process. Same process works for any transitions, like the wood beams on ceiling. Tape the beam caulk the edge and pull tape while paint is wet. Should give a nice clean straight line without "touch ups" when done properly.

Excellent write up,, some great ideas here ! 1-2-3 is very popular up here in Canada, I was a bit stubborn and did not transition soon enough for all trim applications. It's cheaper and more reliable than many of the ' professional ' primers at the suppliers. I do sand before using though, old school. Thanks for posting !!

@@wojtek-33 is that my experience with them? No its in the brochure. This doesnt offer "on the job repair". Meaning if the sprayer pump goes out its done for. These sprayers arent designed to be used long term really. Only a 125 gallon/year suggested use. Also this sprayer cannot spray "HOT" Solvent based liquids per the brochure.. yea you can spray random material but will it lead to premature failure of your rig? You bet.. you can tell which sprayers are capable of spraying thinners and "Hot" material by the design of the input hose. All of the lower grade (doesnt mean cheap in terms of $) sprayers have the clear flexible input tube. Which might possible break down in certain solvents. The better grade sprayers have a metal input tube. Not sure why you felt the need to comment before reading the brochure from Grecos website yourself though. These pumps are not made with the same kinds of seals the better grade sprayers have. These are for waterbased products only as anything else will most def lead to deterioration of the seals inside the sprayer. One day he will go to load paint into it and it wont suck anything up because the pump wont be creating a seal. A little bit of research goes a long way lol.

I'm a professional painter who has been using airless sprayers for 27 years. Mineral spirits isn't a "hot" solvent. Lacquer thinner on the other hand is "hot". There's nothing wrong with using this Graco airless with both latex and alkyd based paints. The important thing is to clean it out properly every single time you use it, and never leave water in it when you are done. I have used my Graco for the last 15 years and switch between alkyd and latex all the time. If you spray latex, then clean it out really well with water and once you have clear water coming out of the primer hose and the gun, then relieve the pressure and pull out the pump filter and the gun filter and clean them off with a scrub brush using water. Reinsert them and run a bit more water through the system and then run mineral spirits through it until all water has been purged. Then relieve the pressure and you're done. I always leave mineral spirits in the pump, hose and gun and have never had any problems. Painting with alkyd is easier to clean out because you just use straight mineral spirits the whole time. I've never used that pump armor product. Our dude in the video should have cleaned the gun filter with a scrub brush and he also should have pulled out the pump filter and cleaned it. Otherwise he's good to go.

Excellent instructions! Very well stated and articulate. Now my take: 51 years of painting. I appreciate all old school techniques but the newer technology is here. 1) After through prep: Urethane Acrylic primers are excellent, but not on some staining issues. 2) Semigloss paint isn’t necessarily enamel. I usually go for something that states”enamel” on the label: example: Benjamin Moore Advance( which is water BORNE alkyd, or a Urethane Acrylic like Cabinet Coat or SWP Emerald that way you can stay with all water soluble materials and… SEND THAT TRASH THINNER TO NEW JERSEY WHERE IT BELONGS!!!!

hey stud pack! good stuff on practising proper maintenance and care for your paint sprayer, i happen to clean these and service many other tools and the only thing i'd add is to run water through the machine first before paint thinner. apart from that keeping the airless system from drying out overnight is a great idea and i even do it for my work when i cant service the tool right away. the only thing i'd say is to have both the gun and paint drawing tube submersed in water to keep the paint inside from drying.

Happy Mother's Day to Mrs. Stud Pack! With the extension wand on, you may a larger tip to get latex to spray through it. A 311 tip is a bit small for latex and primers, I use that mostly for stains and sealers. I would probably move to a 315 to keep the same size fan pattern but have a larger diameter. A 415 would be about perfect though, because you'd be a little closer to the surface so the wider fan pattern will help distribute the paint a bit better. Sometimes those extension wands require the larger tip, or just cranking up the pressure a bit more will push the paint through the tip.

@Studpack Hey guys love your channel, I have been using the Stak Racks for a while now. When you have doors of different heights, just rip a scrap off of a 2x4 the thickness of your difference in height and tack to the shorter door with a couple screws or 23 gauge nails easy to pull back off after spraying doors. (I like to make mine 1" wide so paint can get around the edges of door and attach to top of doors as no one ever sees the top of a door.

I use the StakRacks as well, but I have a word of caution if you are painting the doors in a different location. I transported 6 doors stacked up in the back of my truck and got within 1 block of my destination before the entire stack toppled over, even though it was tied down with straps. It marred the doors and was very frustrating. Great system as long as you don't have a need to paint them in your shop and transport them to the worksite.
@WalkerHomestead
@WalkerHomestead 2 года назад
@@northernlightsrenovations1710 when I have to transport I use vertical 2x4’s and screw then in next to the stack racks and one horizontal between the two vertical ( H Shape) to prevent toppling in transport and between the stakracks and 2x4’s it’s solid. And the horizontal 2x4s are perfect for carrying a stack all at once.

One of the tips I've picked up from this channel is to measure from the centerline, not from the edge. Seems like that would've solved one of the alignment problems with those Stack Racks (re: different door widths).
@ericmallery8583
@ericmallery8583 2 года назад
I had the same thought, just need to be somewhat careful as one of the features of the stack racks is the ability to 'roll' the door from one side to the other while one pair of feet can stay stationary. If the pivot point is too far in from the edge of the door you might limit or lose that ability

I love your videos. The drywall taping helped me a great deal. I need to spray some doors inside my house because it’s cold right now where I live. Do you have a video on setting up some type of spray paint room? Thanks

13:30 Paul, Harbor Freight on Sherwood Forrest had plenty of the Avanti tips in stock this past weekend. They're decent quality and work fine in the Grace sprayers.

Swiss Coffee. I have heard of that paint color multiple times. I'm pretty sure we used it as well. Going to have to look at the stacking system. As a homeowner, not a pro, rolling/brushing a 6 panel door and waiting to flip just is a waste of time (and drying out paint) Happy mother's day to all the mothers!

I was wondering why you did not paint the top and bottom of the doors. Thanks for helping us do it better!

Your cleanout is very similar to mine. I have folks that think you waste a lot of paint in the spray hose, however I have found you only lose about 3-4oz total. I have never had luck with a spray extension. There is always the after dribble (pressure stops at the gun and the tube has paint in it the pressure decreases in the extension tube)

Hose management is key. Have your partner manage the hose as you spray this way the operator is focued on spray technique. Makes for faster and better sets.

When paintng walls try using 1" yellow frog tape on the top edge of your base trim. It will save you time and knee pain. It will also protect from any overspray from your roller. You can also tape the sides of door and window casing but that depends on cut in skills. Cost of tape vs time saved. 👍🇺🇸

I'm building a J&J bathroom for my grandkids. I'm using pocket doors for the toilet/shower area dividers. I just spent most of today painting two 36" slab doors with two coats of paint with a paintbrush. Ugh!! Wish I'd seen this last week. :-) Oh well, live and learn.

Don't feel bad. sprayers are too much work for 2 doors. Short nap 4" roller, Floetrol in the paint and your good.

if you transfer the paint thinner to some tall thin containers, the particulates seem to perk down into a smaller "pile" much faster, making skimming off the clean thinner easier. i am sure that you use coffee filters or some thing like that to get every last drop, lol.

I bought a magnum project painter for less than 300 and I use it only for oil base primers typically. I always paint trim with a latex enamel from my good paint rig. Swapping from oil to water base is a pain.

Same here. i dont have those big sprayers but i do use hand held ones and I learned a long time ago to have one for oil and one for latex. i just added one for stain. they are cheap enough at 99 USD and they pay for themselves on the first job

After pumping thinner through the pump, hose and gun it is necessary to pump denatured alcohol through the pump, hose and gun to clean the thinner out preventing the thinner residue from drying out all the rubber seals inside the pump and then flush with water. Also important to spray paint thinner through the tip to ensure no clogs in the tip. Final thought to reduce clogging of interior filters put the draw tube in a strainer net before putting draw tube in the paint

Doors are a booger. i usually charge about $80 a door, and only use the old school oil paint. It's super durable, and time tested. My spray trick is to get it put into a spray paint cans and that's for touch ups and camouflaging sponge roller marks. After the doors are finished I usually let the paint cure for 4-5 days before re-installing. (You wait for the paint to cure because you want to burnish the finished paint surface).
