How A Natural 1 Caused My Oathbreaker Paladin

@@ashcatchem1967 So in D&D, there are a handful of classes that have to pick exactly what kind of their class they are at the very start, because they are so different later on. Like Warlock, where you don't just become a warlock and THEN your patron, you are a Warlock BECAUSE of your Patron, therefore that must be picked first. Ironically, Paladin in the tabletop game does not need to choose their oath until lvl 3. Baldur's Gate 3 has made some little changes here and there to really make the classes work in this story though, so you pick your Oath at level 1. Your Oath is what gives you all your powers. Oath of Devotion for example is about as straight laced as it gets. The funny thing here is that if this person is an Oath of Devotion paladin... the nat 1 didn't break their oath. Lying broke the oath. Oath of Devotion paladins must not lie or cheat. They cannot fear to act, though that does not mean they cannot be cautious. Aid people, protect the weak, and punish those who would threaten them. Treat others fairly, do as much good as you can, with as little harm as possible. Protect those who serve you, and answer to those with authority over you without question. If you break any of those tenets, you have broken your Oath, and your power is gone. Thus, you become an Oathbreaker, who may be afforded different powers at the cost of being recognized as one who could not keep to their oath.

​@@ashcatchem1967Funny fact yesterday I was with my Old pact oath Level 1 paladin. I am a chaotic/evil player who don't usually rp Good characters. I was able to keep my oath half hour. I just killed a caged Goblin insulting our dead warriors. Like the goblin was a prisoner killed him without trial break my damn oath. Being a normal paladin is complex as hell but funny

I like to imagine it's one of those plastic chairs for a kid's dining room playset

I did the same at exactly the same point as this video for the same reason...damn i was p*ssed ... I intended to do an Oathbreaker build but not this soon

Same story here. Oathbreaker does have quite the fantastic kit though. At level 12 now and decided to play oath (vengeance, naturally) for endgame but you can get to level 12 with Oathbreaker without too many qualms to make me miss the vow.

​@RisingAboveThis biggest issue to oathbreaker is that you pretty much buff all your enemies in act 2.

My dad is playing a paladin, and doing that caused his oath to break. I taught him about the magic of savescummimg that day

Yeah, i felt bad after killing them and saving the others. Good thing nobody every notized i killed them so i was still the hero of their people

Yeah I wanted Lae'zel in the party. Turns out the only way I could mess the roll up was if I rolled the one. So I had to fight the Tieflings because of it, which broke the Oath. Short format editing do be like that I guess.

you can also turn on non lethal attack mode, it's under the passive section of your actions

Haopened to me in multiplayer with the dog in front of the destroyed village. My friends chose options in the dialogue that lead to fight the dog. It died even before my turn and my oath was broken.

Oathbreaker paladin's original oath was not to scam chumps out of their money. But he just can't help himself.

Just for future reference I think if you run far enough away it doesn’t count, i stepped out of a cave during a fight with some friends that definitely would’ve broken my oath bc they lied & backstabbed someone. But the cave was a separate instance w a barrier so maybe that was it?

My friend lost his oath in this same spot. Once we got to the grove, he said fuck it and started to steal everything.

There was something oddly satisfying about using Hellish Rebuke to 1 shot annoying, squishy rangers in really awkward positions. Also, the Control Undead with the Dance Macabre spell in Act 3. Enjoy your Death Knight build.

I'm tempted to purposely break my oath, only downside is I don't know how many healing spells I'll lose and how ill get my 'speak to animals' spell back :[

@@The_Gallowglass lol I didn't do a prefight interview, I started kicking ass once I got in the room. I jumped over by the door and threw in a cleave and Bob's your Uncle I'm an oath breaker.

So I’m confused on why this is an oath break. They were holding someone prisoner. Why was this specific kill an oath break

Now that is some poor luck. I seem to have noticed an increase in nat 20's the further I get into the game on some pretty big moments to be honest with you. I do wonder if the early game its more common to roll poorly?

"Rolled a 1 on both my dice and her ability" If you roll a 1 you do not get the ability bonus. Critical 1 removes all buffs.

You have to admit though, even if this wasn't the outcome you were expecting/wanted, it's still a memorable development. It's why I'm trying to avoid re-rolling in my game.

"If it's red it's dead" is probably the sort of reckless psychotic mentality that has probably lead to many a paladin forsaking their oaths.

Exactly, even the persuasion roll chosen was to kill Lae'zel. Just go up and chat to the tieflings and convicne them to leave. So easy not to break your oath here.

Convincing them to leave is also a persuasion check, and having your party members do the killing doesn’t work, you still break your oath by letting it happen. Non-lethal doesn’t even work here, the game still considers them dead.

One can also use subdual damage.

Which is odd given that between lae’zel and the tieflings, the tieflings are absolutely the lesser evil

I must've had a glitch. Cause I'm a vengeance paladin and it broke my oath for whatever reason

@@zackandkrieger yeah it shouldn’t have. It’s very hard to break the vengeance oath. There’s only a few events that do it. Oddly one of them is saving the goblin from being killed in a cage in the grove.

​@@stonnerpenguinYou can get it by letting other companions talk to the hag. Make sure your main is not the nearest to the hag when the dialogue appears. It won't break your Oath.
