That’s radiosity for you. Ray tracing shines where reflections and refractions are involved. Hardly a selling point for this game. Or any game really apart of maybe racing simulators.
I don't know what you mean. Graphics in 2014 were easily capable of this. In fact if you look at the textures closely they were ever a bit average for the time. Nothing amazing. The difference is art design over graphical fidelity. Graphics are at the point now - and have been for sometime - where design should take priority over gimmicky technological innovation in the visuals. The design philosophy and artistic vision were key to keeping it really fresh - not mere graphical fidelity. I really wish more people understand this so that we can have more game like this and less like, say, Destiny or CoD or

2014 was the eight console generation so it's no surprise it looks good, it would be more surprising if it didn't look good. Most games in a console generation look about the same because they use the same technology. Sure improvements can be made as devs learn to use the resources better but most difference is in art direction and engines. Does TLOU2 (2020) look a lot better than Uncharted 4 (2016)? Not really. Does Sekiro (2019) look much better than Bloodborne (2015)? Even early 8th gen games like Infamous Second Son, Killzone Shadowfall, P.T, AC Unity or games from just a year later like Dying Light, Arkham Knight, Until Dawn, MGS5, The Witcher 3, Rise of The Tomb Raider look on par with games from 2020. If they released Alien Isolation 2 on current generation, it would look slightly better sure but not by a lot, there's a limit to how much they can improve. That's why I'm always a bit sad when a sequel releases in the same generation, because it means it won't be a big (technological) improvement over the original.
@@10secondsrule Yeah, but people are wetting themselves whenever ray tracing is mentioned. So, they wanna see it everywhere and that’s why we’ll see it in every damn next-gen game until new gimmick become propelled by console makers/devs that have nothing else to show, because they need to minimise the expense as much as possible to keep that €500 price and manage to profit at least half of it. I love how Control was showing off RT. That game like 3 puddles (all in poorly lit rooms) and no water at all, the environments are mostly concrete or hard rocky surfaces...that are reflecting most of the light, because that’s how it works. Yet, people loved it, because mankind is a lost cause.
Not only. Gameplay and feel are pretty much like the first movie. It’ like the game is the best sequel to the film, better than all the movies that came after.
This game was SO good. Everything about it felt perfect. They captured the 70s/80s sci-fi flair of the alien franchise with such accuracy. I really hope creative assembly makes another title and build upon the legacy of arguably the greatest alien game ever made.
Playing it now. It took a minute to get going, but this is the first time I’ve finally forgotten about Dead Space. Which I still believe they should remake from the ground up. No idea where this game will end. But I still have the DLC as well. The AI for the Alien is fucking bananas. That thing is SMART (but you’re smarter, that’s the beauty of it).
@@TheStanishStudios I just can’t get over what a tribute it is to the first one in particular. Clearly made by people who truly **love** the film. The best homage to a fantastic movie any game has made to date.
They'd have to rehire most of the devs for this game before they could do a sequel. Those folks are at different studios now, doing indie games in this style.
The first time a played Alien Isolation I thought video games had reached a crazy level of immersion. Only later I realize that it was just Alien isolation that reached that milestone
Alien Isolation is what I imagined modern games to evolve into, during the early 2000s. Its sad to see that in many way games havent progressed that much.
One of the best games ever made. A game made for an audience in particular, but wow'd the gaming public as a whole. Seriously so good. The AI is revolutionary in its own right.
I respectfully disagree. The first 2 to 3 hours are great. Fantastic atmosphere and pacing. But then... it just sucks. For four times I’ve tried and I just cannot continue after the first couple of hours. I’m not really sure why but I just can’t seem to care after a while.
It was a bit long, though I didnt mind the Working Joe levels as much as I see complained about. It was just a bit drawn out. Though one of my ALL TIME Favorite Games.
@@j.a.weishaupt1748 The first 2 to 3 hours most people don't even get to the Alien. The game really kicks in far later than that. I think you are giving it a disservice. That is very unfortunate, oh well.
I think that killed some of the success of this game unfortunately At the time they were still such a big review outlet and people would judge a game on scores from sites like that before trying them
How anyone can rate this masterpiece a 5/10 is beyond me. It's a marvel of suspense, atmosphere, visuals and A.I. It truly is one of the best horror experiences ever crafted.
@@radovanjosipovic2567 As much as I love Dead Space...no. Just no. Alien Isolation is a TRUE Survival Horror. Dead Space is an action game with elements of horror such as a really creepy atmosphere, art desing and sound, but the gameplay core is pure action. There's no bactracking, no puzzle solving, no resource management, plenty of ammo, health and money to buy even more health and ammo, a great variety of weapons, etc, etc. It's the oppsite of a Survival Horror
they all got scared shitless and ran away because it is actual horror. in this game, you cant fight all you can do is run and hide and hope it doesn't get you. compared to this dead space is a walk in the park because you know that anything you fight will eventually go down. except for that damn regenerator damn, I hate that guy.
Everything related to Alien - Isolation is a must watch for me. This game was criminally underrated when it came out because of Colonial Marines failure, but I swear there's never been a better homage and faithful recreation of the Alien movie experience than this. An absolute must have! Sad there's no plans for a sequel.
I don't think it was underrated because of colonial marines. The well known reviewers like IGN didn't give it a good review. Its annoying people complain about short games and then complain about it being too long. I don't get it. A game far ahead of its time i think.
No plans for a sequel because the dev team was fired immediately after. The publisher had hoped to make more profits. Those core devs are over at No Code now, twiddling their thumbs while making indie games in the A:I style.
@@Youcannotfalter truly, the lenght was an extra for me. The story was well developed and the pacing was balanced. What I meant about being overlooked was because at the time of release, not only major reviewers were lukewarm in their reception, but even people took a while to discover the game and appreciate the ammount of quality that went into developing it, the detail, the immersion, considering that at the time, Alien didn't have a proper videogame counterpart and the franchise was already a shell of it's former self (cinematic franchise). It has a cult following nowadays because this game was as you just said, ahead of its time and nothing short of a miracle by today standards.
I don't think all opinions were based on the failure of "Colonial Marines". I think a lot of the "underrating" was done by the people this game wasn't for and they kind of discredited it as boring or something like that. - This game didn't have a global or very mainstream appeal. It was for fans of the movie(s), horror(games) and perhaps a few other kinds of people. But other than that it wasn't very appealing to the rest and so it didn't get all the credit it deserved. - This is a piece of art among videogames, even apart from the gameplay or even playing it. A very special piece of work at least.
Certainly not... It was Aliens Crucible, an RPG from Obsidian Entertainment. This was cancelled in favour of 2010's Alpha Protocol. You can't help but wonder what that studio could have done with the licence. They're one of the best when it comes to the role-playing genre.
@@robcain8865 I don't feel like during that time. if it were to have come out it would not have been super great. Obsidian was dealing with quite a bit of funding issues. And I think that can cause developers to make blunders just out of pure stress ie alpha protocol. This wasn't the only issue they were facing either. I think if obsidian were to have another crack at it today it would probably be fantastic.
It's been 6 years and the design, graphics and soundscape of this game still holds much better than some recent triple A launches, and I bet it will resist the passing of time. Impressive work Creative Assembly.
Yea, that's what you get when they take their time and think about things and really make it work and don't do it for just the money. - Oh, and of course that the people upstairs LET them work on it and don't try to push a product out the door for sales.
@@axelNodvon2047 no sadly it wasn't. Critically acclaimed and post release it has garnered a stronger following and likely significantly better figures. But it was an expensive game to make and at launch did not sell particularly well. Early figures are what decide whether or not the team jumps straight on a sequel or has to do something else.
In case the devs are reading this: I absolutely love this game. It's a really unique experience and this video has reminded me that I probably should play this game again soon.
They achieved to deliver the BEST Alien game, with a gameplay that captures the essence of the film. There'll never be enough appreciation for this game.
I was lucky enough to work on the SNES version of Alien 3 as the mission and map creator. Unluckily after I was forced into doing an Olympics game. Going from a career highlight to a career lowpoint sucked worse than a facehugger so the bosses at CA had the right idea fighting for their excellent project as endless discussions about the colour of shorts doesn't quite fire the imagination as trying to capture the feel and fear of the original Alien.
This game is a million times more terrifying in VR. I wish SEGA/CA would just release an update that enables it with a variety of HMDs. It deserves to be played that way without any modding.
I fidgeted around and got it working on an occulus dev kit 2, and it was pretty amazing walking around sevastapol in VR however i could only move using either KBM or a controller, and if i needed to turn around i also needed to use a KBM or controller, so while it was really cool i got so fucking motion sick after 20 minutes that i almost threw up
They'd have to rehire the devs, though. The actual studio that made this game got collapsed immediately after making it, and for some reason Creative Assembly keeps avoiding that story when people hype up this game with them.
I hate horror movie games as well. I hate jump scares, creepy noises, and that awful anxiety. I gave this a try because I love the Alien franchise (and it was on sale on steam). I would recommend this game to any who hates horror games because it's so different than the garbage "gamers" play on youtube for views. The setting, atmosphere, sound engineering, story, the mechanics... The game's beauty lures you in with about an hour or two of gameplay before you get a glimpse of the alien, and by then you're hooked; you want to just exist in its environment far more than the Alien is terrifying. And it IS terrifying.
The atmosphere and perfect replication of the look and props from the movies is amazing in this game. It felt like like a very natural part of the Alien world & franchise.
Yes, the game had been defined as a 'part' of the Alien core lore. It worked on multiple levels, and remains a stellar experience even today, beating out many other wanna-be horror titles.
It feels more like an Alien film than a couple of the sequels / prequels! I put on the original film the other night and was blown away by how accurate everything looks.
@Smunstu Stinkymonster boring? excuse me, are you talking about yourself? I'm kidding lol, Hitman it's pretty fun for me, if you don't like it, that's fine :)
Loved seeing the pitch video and how the game evolved from first-person pitch to third-person and back again. So much happens in game development most players will never know. Thanks, Noclip for lifting the curtain.
One of the most impressive works of art that exists right between film and gaming. The level of care that went into the fusion of the two in this case is something I'm eager to see more of, and it’s certainly something that continues to inspire me in my own projects. Alistair is a genius.
This is one of the best games of the generation and it never got the attention it deserves. Mostly because asshole reviewers gave it a bad score because it’s a difficult game. It made me a huge fan of the Alien franchise and it’s one of the tensest games I’ve ever played.
I never got a feel it was underrated or anything like that. Sure, one review bombed it (and was bombed in return), but the overall reception was very positive and it was that year's hit, including top spots and accolades at year's end lists et cetera. I think the perception it's an "underrapreciated niche masterpiece" is pretty overblown.
I just love how the gaming community got behind this and gave it the respect and exposure it deserves. Such a full experience with incredible atmosphere, fidelity to the source material, and the proof that modern games can be great
I am one of those people that put Alien Isolation on my top favorite games. My first time playing I had a jump scare that I put the game away for almost two months... Eventually I I got back and started a new game and played 10 of the most exhilarating hours I ever had on a game.
@@galandilvogler8577 hahahahah That was my mistake on my first play. I tried to be sneaky and let the alien go away. The second time arround, I keep moving, every opportunity I had I moved and changed my behavior. I died... A LOT, but after around the flashback of the nostromo I got really good on doing this.
@@vitorviotti Yeah, this. If you keep a general forward momentum (you can walk when the alien's in the vents guys, it's okay!) and don't linger too long in any one room, the AI is forgiving (how much depends on the difficulty level). Basically, the game rewards you for being brave, but not stupid. In my first playthrough I also made the mistake of crab-walking everywhere and trying to wait the alien out.
I don't like it because of the gameplay, but I have to say that the environment is a part of the holy trinity of immersive, jaw-dropping game environments that includes Alien: Isolation, Escape From Butcher Bay and Thief the Dark Project. I can see why as a fan of this you enjoy it.
I'm not saying “Alien: Isolation 2, please”, but I'm saying “Ray Tracing patch for modern PCs and next gen consoles, please”. Imagine this with RT shadows, ambient occlusion and GI?
I get so excited when there's a new video about this game. It perfectly captures the exact feeling I got while watching the movie and -in my opinion- no other movie to videogame translation was made as well as this one. It's amazing how CA managed to recreate the same athmosphere but adding so many original elements at the same time. Everything about this game feels deliberate, every detail feels carefully and lovingly put together. You really feel like you're the protagonist in a movie. This is my all-time favorite game and I doubt it'll ever be surpassed.
Just finished this game for the first time ever. And it’s easily my favorite out of all the horror games I’ve played. Silent Hill, Amnesia, Outlast, Resident Evil 1-7, Soma, etc etc. it’s a masterpiece IMO. I know it has some issues and some people have complaints about stuff, but I think it’s fantastic and when it’s firing on all cylinders it’s definitely tense! So cool to be surprised by the Doc after being so impressed by the game. Good work Danny
It turned into a great game. I'm glad they put hope in this project despite what a catastrophe Aliens Colonial Marines turned out to be. (I still remember the E3 demo that look awesome.. but the final version degraded... how?) 😬
Cause it went through a bunch of developers and development became an inconsistent mess because of it. - And considering that one team on a single project, like CA on "Isolation", already has trouble figuring out their own idea, imagine how difficult it would be to do it right one a project that has gone through different teams. I still wish that perhaps they could've taken the assets of "Colonial Marines" and then CA could've reworked or remade that game into a new and improved version. I mean, if I were Sega or part of CA I would've suggested that at the very least, considering the success of "Isolation". - I mean... money... But perhaps nobody cared anyway and even if they wanted to the stigma attached to that game might have been too hard to get rid of and convince people. - Then again, had they marketed it with "remade by the creators of Alien Isolation" or something... Who knows! - It's getting late, but I think there's still a window to do that.
The fact this game came out looking this good at the beginning of the 8th console generation still blows my goddamn mind, actual wizards at Creative Assembly
Oh wow, I wasn't expecting to see new footage from the third person build of the game! 9:34 is a space/scripted event that's in the final game, and I think I hear Andrea Deck's voice - they must've gotten a lot further than I'd expected in the third person version.
@@10secondsrule I think it would've been cool to have an option. Perhaps not like an option at the start but like an unlockable mode or something. - But if it was always in 3rd person, I think it would've been compared to Dead Space a lot more. I mean, as soon as this video showed it to me my mind went to Dead Space. When it went back to first person view, it just became its own thing again. - It's a very console-esque thing, the third person view in a videogame, which is fine. But that sort of immersive personal experience you get in the first person perspective turned out to be important and I think it also made games like 'Resident Evil 7' all the better and more unique for it.
the human being is the perfect organism, my friend. Not only are we made in God's image.... but we can kill the alien in the end. We are way smarter than it.
Absolutely amazing game. It introduced me to the Alien franchise and the desperation yet fascination of facing the Xenomorph. It set me up as an Alien fan for life. The world, the atmosphere, and the absolute terror; how there has not been a plan for a sequel boggles me.
This game is an absolute masterpiece! I've played through it several times. This game is always installed on my machine because I keep coming back. It still scares the crap out of me! And graphics still hold up! Plus it was optimized so well for the PC. And I love ALIEN. This game was made for me.
I was there at EGX rezzed when it was first shown off, feels crazy to have been able to play it so early! I remember it feeling like a real next gen game, and absolutely terrifying experience
@@michelottens6083 It's so weird that they first give them a chance with all conviction and then when there isn't enough money it's like garbage to them. (Though, I don't know if the same people made both decisions.) - I know that they probably expected it to sell like a movie or something. But if it made ANY money, I would be like "Can you make another one?... I want more money. But you do your thing and make it for me.". - That's basically how it works. The boss should be up front about business and then just put the employees to work. Not fire them, which doesn't generate money and only save some money temporarily. - I see now that they went all-out on "Total War", making it their annual release, though. - How long until that will incorporate "surprise mechanics"?...
This is easily one of my top 10 favorite games from this generation, and is also high on my list of favorites of all time. As a lifelong superfan of the movie Alien, I was so very impressed with the attention to detail paid to everything in this game. Not a game for everyone, but so deserving of a sequel.
Still one of my favorite games of all time! Just replayed it again on Nightmare, but in VR for the first time on a Valve Index. Thank you for this documentary! Seeing the demo footage they showed to Sega to greenlight the game was a treat!
This is easily one of the greatest horror games ever made. I played it Halloween week last year and I'm just sad I don't have a sequel to play this year. Amazing video btw, I don't know how you got this much insight into the developers but I subscribed and now expect much more!
That game was so anxiety inducing that I remember when there was a segment at the medical bay I spent 15-20 minutes sitting in a closet listening to the Alien walking somewhere behind the wall and not going away.
I really really love this game. Trouble is, I don't have the ability to play it for more than about an hour at a time before I have to stop and do something calming. If that's not indicative of what an amazing horror game Alien: Isolation is, I don't know what is.
Same! ...but it get's easier. The alien starts to feel more like a pest than a monster. I haven't played on "Nightmare" difficulty yet, but at least on the other difficulties, you fall into a rhythm with the alien after a while.
@@_lithpHonestly though, I'd rather deal with the Alien than with an industrial Working Joe. Those mfs can spot me from a mile away and take forever to drop.
I thoroughly enjoyed this gaming experience... the developers absolutely nailed the Alien movie's atmoshere and tone. A great video also Noclip - nice one! 👍
I'm glad it ended up as first person, i'm sure it would've been good 3rd person, but the fear is so core that being thrid person would've created too much distance between you and the alien to really feel the fear.
Yea, and even a distance between you and the character you play. - Something that amplifies the "scare/fear" factor to me is when it's in first person perspective, it always has. Despite me having been an advocate of the first-person perspective, being really excited about games like 'Mirror's Edge' (which, ironically, in hindsight I actually think should've been in third person for the sake of the experience, despite making it unique in first person). As a kid and even teen I had trouble ever even starting first person games, even if they weren't horror, because it's so in-your-face. Even 'Minecraft' startles me and occasionally creeps me out to this day... - And I'm not saying that games in third-person a not-scary, I mean there's 'Dead Space' and even parts like in "Uncharted" or "Tomb Raider" could be creepy. - But still, you're literally more detached from the character, rather controlling the character than "being the character" as if it's you in that situation.
This was literally the game I would fantasise about playing when I was a kid. After many action focussed or watered down (or just plain crap) takes on the IP, Isolation did both the most obvious and most original thing anyone could do with Alien. Alien Isolation 2 when Creative Assembly
As much as I'd love a sequel to this game and buy it in a heartbeat, I am skeptical as to what more they could do with the franchise without it feeling same-y. I think Creative Assembly's greatest achievement in this game was the environments and ambience, so much so that even without the alien I could still see myself playing it just to explore. As long as that experience and that vision carries over to whatever they make next, I couldn't care less what IP it is.
It is such a good game, that a few months ago I downloaded it again to play it at maximum difficulty, they already have the quality base of what is the first, please do the second
Awesome little doc.. brought back really fond memories of this games. I’m a bit a of wimp where it comes to horror games, this is the only one I just had to play through the trauma right to the end. Loved the vid and subscribed.
Mad respect to these guys. I know it seem complicated right now but the world's in need of a sequel to isolation, please dear developpers make it happen.
Super glad Chris Bratt was able to help you get these interviews, I'd love to see more collaborations between 2 of the best game documentary channels going right now.
A fantastic game. I loved "playing chess" with the alien. That's what it felt like sometimes. The AI was that good. I didn't much care for the synthetics though and I actually felt the game was too long. But it doesn't detract from my overall feeling about the game. It's almost a masterpiece.
Lots of folks; both players and reviewers had felt the story was too long. Actually, the game wasn't any longer than other titles of its time; it's just that it was such a tense experience, player-fatigue had impacted the 'personal experience' more than, say, a racing game or a shooter. -it 'felt' long due to its player-immersion and wtf plotline.
@@TheSGBrown No, it was too long in my opinion. I don't see how "what other games did" makes that any less true. If you end up just wanting a game to end, the game is too long, simple as that. The game simply didn't have enough diversity beyond 10 hours to keep me interested. I did finish it, but I ended up downloading some sort of cheat to just get through the last 6 hours of it as quickly as possible, so I could see how it ended. The synthetics passages especially grew old on me very, very quickly. But as I said, it doesn't really detract from my overall opinion of the game. It is extremely well-made and the xenomorph itself especially.
One of the absolutely best games ever made! I've bought it on multiple platforms, and download the vr mod. I would have loved to replay it in 3rd person as well just to get something new out of it. But now I think I'll have to play it in vr again! Loved this! Now!... to the game!
@@TheActs2021 sorry for taking so long to answer. The vr is great, some smaller hiccups, but for a game that wasn't made with VR as a priority it is one of the best VR games out there. Check out @upisnotjump 's channel and watch his playthrough to get an idea.
Omg thank you so much for doing a doc on this title. Would love a patch for newer consoles as this title deserves it. So much love here thank you again!!!
I have played this game over and over, a masterpiece for sure. I still have hope for ALien Isolation 2 somewhere in the future. Please make it happen CA.
Danny, thanks for this and everything you do. I've never been hooked on a doc series before Noclip, but your stuff is just the best and tells stories I feel are rarely shown about devs at this level of detail and care. I've watched all the docs about games I have played and loved, and it astounds me that I can even enjoy your docs even if I never played the game, like Alien or Spelunky. While I can't wait to watch what you're cooking up (the Hades docs are what got me here!!), I hope you're finding a better balance for yourself creatively and take the time to care for yourself as much as your amazing work. Much love
Hell to the yeahs. This is one of the best October's I've head in a while. Thanks alot for your contribution to my Alien: Isolation documentaries/analysis archive ;)
One of my favorite games this generation. Sadly Gamespot and IGN screw up their release window with their absolute terrible reviews. I'll never forgive.
Who on earth uses reviews 😂 not seen a review since the magazine's that came with demo disks. Everything is just an opinion piece nowadays and i couldnt give a fuck what someone else loved/hated about a game
@@-pressxtostart- Well that's you, most people use reviews especially when there is a bunch of releases coming together, to me personally reviews are never a deciding factor, i know what i like by watching gameplay.
I played this game on Nightmare, not knowing that that was the extra-hard setting. It was so incredibly difficult and frightening that I almost had to give up on many occasions. But with luck I finally made it through. Such an experience. Thank you for making this.
Absolutely loved this one. Supremely underrated. It’s the GAME OF THIS GENERATION for me. Had no expectations from it, but the sheer love and attention to detail which went into this game won me over. As a fan of the 1st Alien movie, this game just captured the essence of it. A perfect synthesis of movies, games, art and emotions. And after looking at the graphics of SCORN, I am convinced that an Alien Isolation game built upon Unreal Engine 5 with VR Support along with 3D audio will absolutely blow everything away!
As a fan of ALIEN and almost all things related to it, this is a must play... It's scary as all hell. It just captures the atmosphere of the original movie perfectly. And although there is a slim to no chance of a second installment, we the fans can only hope that CA change their mind :)
There has not been a game that feels this atmospheric ever again. Alien Isolation is one of a kind. I am truly terrified moving around in this game. It's tense!
First person was definitely a great decision. There's a catch 22 in the game where you never want to take your eyes off the alien because it's terrifying, but often turning your back on it is the most efficient way to progress. When you get used to how the alien moves and can confidently navigate around it without looking at it, there's a real feeling of achievement as well.
Masterpiece game!! Very underrated, my favorite game of 2014, the atmosphere of the game was incredible, Sevastopol Station felt like a real lived in place, while the AI of the Xeno felt like an actual living thing 😃👏👏👏
