Founded in 1293, Moritaka Hamono is by FAR the most historied blacksmithing family we work with. Today, though, all the focus is on their process of making a Japanese knife. The Moritakas are one of few blacksmiths today cladding their steel in-house using the traditional method of Warikomi, and this is their process from start to finish.
Curious about the entire process of knifemaking? We made an entire documentary on it: • Springhammer 2: How Ja...

I have one of their knives. Really cool to see the process it went through before it came to me. Thank you for this video!

I just love those videos. So true, so distant from the rest of occidental world.

I really enjoy videos like this, it gives us a window into the dedication and craftsmanship it takes to produce high quality, functional pieces of art. I have a 270mm Moritaka Sujihiki that I truely enjoy using, and after seeing this video, along with reading their story in Kevin's book, my appreciation for my knife has only grown stronger.

I like the quiet no-voiceover vibe, but part of my brain wants a "How It's Made" narrator on this.

Beautiful vid! I’ve never seen any japanese smiths wearing any kind of ear protection. I’m guessing hearing loss and tinnitus unfortunately is part of their trade as well.

Considering how much work goes into these, their knives are pretty cheap/not super expensive.

Have you checked out the springhammer series? They're on our RU-vid channel, 2 parts, both just under an hour long!

Do you guys know anything about the buddhist school that they used to make swords for way back then? The best I can come up with is that it was Shingon Buddhist. Thank you!

I really wanna buy a knife but I’m not sure if I can trust RU-vidrs that sell products. Nothing against y’all but is there like a way to really know these are authentic made and sold Japanese knives?

Knifewear is a very reputable shop in the Japanese knife community. They're not RU-vidrs with a store, they're a store with a RU-vid channel.

They have multiple storefronts all over Canada and ship all over the world, I’ve bought over 5 knives from them happy with every single one, they go to Japan meet with blacksmiths even have their own special editions made, no one Carries the rock face kitchen knives they’re special made for knifewear and they just had the Moritakas at their store engraving customer knives, their site is amazing and they answer every question

If you've got doubts, you might want to check out our documentary, Springhammer! We have personal relationships with the blacksmiths we work with and visit Japan several times a year. If you've got any specific questions about our knives, how they're made, or which one is best for you, you can pop over to our website- the chat window goes to real people:)

@AlejandroGarcia-bj5ex bro is new here 😂 while I can understand your concern, please do some research on the company/first, before suggesting they are not trust worthy. I have bought 12 knives (and other accessories) from their YYC store, both of their staff and products are superb.
