The main letdown for me is Autodesk support. And also, crazy prices for stuff like Maya.

The truth is most industries are flexable with software and files often get passed around between one system to another. So far I've learned that each engine has there strengths and weaknesses. Maya for Animation, Houdini for VFX and Simulations, and Blender for modeling or Eveees realtime FX. of course there are edge cases between softwere. For instance Mayas uV unwrap tools are better in some ways then Blender. But that all go's to show that I can take something modeled in Blender, animate it in Maya, and add some special effects from Houdini. Thats completely common practice in industry.

With what is happening in the industry and all the layoffs going on, blender is the best bet. Everyone wants to cut cost, so why not? Moreover for me I am a long term Autodesk 3dsmax user and have been using it since the dos days. It has really grown into an excellent software. I also support blender and have subscribed to their studio. I believe blender is really good as well, it's becoming more and more amazing. To conclude, it will only be Benito know multiple softwares if you have the time to learn, because each has it own powers

Blender downside doesn't scale up to bigger projects, also the tools are not as polished as in other softwares...sure they add updates but they never truly finish them in a sense that they can scale up to more demanding projects. For a small indie projects sure but for a AAA one I don't think so hence the Industry is not moving away from Autodesk products and won't for a long time.

The way industry is right now, with all these layoffs, I find it hard to keep motivated to learn Maya. I would recommend to learn houdini or zbrush, even blender, yes even blender since, the indie industry is growing even bigger, is "easier" to find more jobs with these tools than with maya. And not only the indie industry but the syntetic data and simulations industries rely on houdini and blender a lot, in my current job is what is used. If you are only intereste in in the enterteinment industry well good luck getting a position with even a harsher competition from those who were laid off and the newcomers. That industry is really small and getting smaller

@@KaTal-6 because of statistics? because even with all the layoffs in tech the percentage is low compared to employed workers? If you lay off 8% of 10k from a company and only a percentage of that is people who use a 3d software. That still leaves thousands of people employed using that software. Like do you people not understand math?

Ubisoft uses a really old version of Max that is hard linked to their game engine, Anvil. Even level editing is done in Max because Anvil back in the day didn't have any level editing tools at all. As developers got comfortable with the process, they didn't bother to change it either. 3ds max is a fossil of an application today and everyone knows that. It's still being used as a habit, not as a choice.

3ds Max still king of modeling and therefore for game assets creation so...no, its not used just out of habit. That "fossil" beats Maya, Blender and co. in this regard.

@@hound_of_justice I disagree. Modo is far better, easier, efficient and smoother to work with than 3ds max. It's got way better modeling workflows especially with booleans and hardsurface and probably one of the best UV'ing tools as well. During my time at ubisoft, all artists wanted to move away from max to something better that wouldn't waste their time on mundane tasks but the management refused. It was simply forced onto artists because it was built into the pipeline with the engine.

@@NevermoreZach Disagree on this one and the industry speaks for itself as well. But hey, Modo got updated recently so i might give it a try for fun. Until now none of the competitors could replace my 3ds Max when it comes to modeling. The ease and efficient and non destructible use as well as the precision and some other things are french kiss.

@@hound_of_justice Whatever floats your boat. The industry is not the "all in all" of absolutely best-case decisions. Infact, it's the opposite. If you've been in the industry for more than a decade, you will know this. If you want to build a studio or a team that works around efficiency, then following the so called "industry standard" is not always the best choice. IF you want a job in the industry, then probably might want to lean into what is followed there. Thats all.

@@NevermoreZach I agree on this one when it comes to choosing what i want to work with. I initially started learning 3ds Max + ZBrush due to possibility for jobs + got network to the industries thanks to some people including my friend that is at Crytek. But i also pay for making my life easier and those tools including 3ds Max are doing exactly that. But for us who arent employed in the industry we have the luxury to choose what we want to work with :D

as a freelance 3D artist that also worked on AAA/AA titles i see less and less requirements for maya and a lot more projects leting me use Blender i actually switched to it from Max full time after Mafia 1 Remake and have no issues with clients

Depends. Even if they dont specifically concretely state you need Maya in their workflow but say you should have experience in either of Maya, Max or Blender...they will make you have to switch to Maya or Max as soon as you get in there. Happened to my friend at Crytek, happens in other companies as well. I personally do not hire anyone that only has experience in Blender and only uses that software.

@@hound_of_justice well yep, depends, juniors are probably more forced to switch but even before 2.8 version of blender some coleagues worked in blender and just did export to max/maya, did the mandatory exports trough the scripts and it was okay, they were faster and better than me inside max

@@tomasgr1000 thats fine, its up to the company or a team. Indie studios are more likely to use Blender instead of Max for example for the cost reasons. In my case i do use 3ds Max for modeling and wouldnt switch back to Blender anymore but my brother who is also my partner has Blender if some extra modeling is needed. For animation for example tho in my case Maya is mandatory to be used. I use both 3ds Max and Maya + ZBrush and other software that makes my workflow easier and efficient.

@@hound_of_justice yeah point was that not only indie studios are running on blender, i actually switched to blender thatnks to some guys at Hangar 13 when they showed me how fast they can be in it, i think there is not that great need to be master at maya or max, just know enough to export/import to and from it and it should be okay and if you know bit of scripting and can replicate some plugins, youre golden

@@tomasgr1000 oh, big studios sometimes use Blender as well. And mastering a software like Maya or Max is a lot lol, i dont need to "master them" as i split tasks between them plus i use ZBrush, Marvelous Designer and co. as well.

I'd use Maya if the modeling tools actually worked. Instead I've got a bevel that always break, nonmanifold geometry that gets created on the fly because the offset/extrude is broken, absolutely no non-destructive modeling capabilities, no built in functionality to select hard edges, no weighted normals (and all of the scripts don't work). Maya is great at everything... except modeling. Which is my main thing. I wish autodesk made a new software with Maya's workflow, UV tools and rigging tools, but with Max's modeling tools and modifier system.

I have maya indie, and have for the last few years, but even then i'm contemplating switching entirely to blender, my only price concerns then would be addons, which are one-time purchases. If i were to go back to autodesk for anything, it would be mudbox. Sure, development on that is effectively dead, but its sculpting tools are better than blender's in some ways, and while it is a subscription, it is still affordable, unlike zbrush, which has gone full subscription, and it's an expensive one at that. Never thought i'd say this, but I wish Autodesk had bought pixologic insted of maxon, at least then there could have been the chance for zbrush and mudbox to be merged.

I wish I agreed with your statement, but maya for me has crashed more times in a day doing a simple blendshape or model while giving maya clases than blender doing a game ready FULLY Rigged and animated character in a month. Love maya, as it was the first 3D program I used... But I prefer blender both for price and stability. Specially for my comms. :b

I used maya for 15 years. Blender is better and much faster a far wider variety of tasks in 3d development. Maya is better for a small subset of functions and offers functionality that Blender does not possess for that small subset of requirements that some studios have. Maya is also arguably more pleasant to work with for character animation but there are blender addons that can make animation better. Also , why isn't every animator using cascadeur now ? It looks far better .

Maya is unbeaten by Blender in most areas, sculpting is where Blender is ahead (but almost everyone that uses Maya has also ZBrush in his toolset so no worry about that one) and non destructive modeling (in this case we have 3ds Max with its modifier stack and high precision modeling workflow).

​@@hound_of_justice If you enjoy maya then all power to you mate , many do. Why is it better? In what area? I would love to know, i genuinely find it interesting to learn what I am missing as I would not rule out going back to Maya (open mind here). Besides character animation which I do think Maya is better in terms of speed of creation but not quality of art output. But I am not interested in high end character animation :D For me as a generalist I think blender does a much wider variety of tasks and does it better in most of those tasks. For example I think the maya hypershade is much worse than blenders shader editor. I found myself making objects and setting up UV's for substance to be 2 or 3 times faster in blender than in maya ... after a few months of using blender daily. General hard surface modelling, uv, shader and basic animation in blender is a breeze compared to Maya and what I have saved in subscriptions I have been able to use to purchase a massive library of content for blender over the last 3 years that includes things like cars, biomes, productivity plugins, fluids, cloth and much more. I bought embergen with cash I saved. I find the Maya UI to be incredibly dated and slow compared to blender. I used maya since v4 up to 2021 and I noticed that since autodesk aquired maya from Aliaswavefront that the development just stagnated. Look at the last 2 years of releases. It's pretty basic stuff. Live link with Unreal. That's about the only thing I wish blender had but I use omniverse instead. It's 1 click.

@@DirkTeucher I personally use Maya now for animation, rigging and grooming and i (and most others) dont see where Blender is suppose to outshine it here. High end animation, toü tier rigging, XGen is sometimes brokey but yet super powerful and then there are the very fancy and useful add ons like Animbot on top of all of that. UVing i do in both Max and Maya depending on case. For modeling 3ds Max is the king and thats what i use Max for in addition to Maya, ZBrush and some others. Blender ist still amazing ofc and my comrade uses Blender for modeling purposes when we team up.

Blender is good for certain things but doesn't scale up for AAA projects, and doesn't integrate well in a production pipeline. also it's licence prevents Studios from just adopting it as a main DCC, So they won't ditch decades of experience and R&D for a " free" software or something that" seems " better. Blender is nowhere near Maya in terms of handling complex scenes and still to this day lack proper rigging & animation tools and workflows, Addons are not the solution since they're just duc tapes to core problems like Animation Layer s, Onion skinning and so on. they're working to improve that since 2020, but due to late developement it's until 2025 even then we have to wait & see if it's up to the quality that Maya offers. cascadeur hasn't cemented itself in a production yet , no Studio/Animator is going to jump ship.

@@xox8717 I don't know if we are using the same maya at work because all I hear is a lot of waffling and lies. "Blender is nowhere near Maya in terms of handling complex scenes" that's some sugar coated lies as I have the same scene opened on both software at work and one struggles badly where the other shines, spoiler it's not maya. And no, I think you don't understand how licenses work but Blender license doesn't prevent studios from using Blender in their pipeline, if that was the case then Bungie, Valve etc. wouldn't have been using it. I'm guessing you work for maya otherwise pretty much 80% of what you wrote are blatant lies.

Its not outdated, especially not in the last few years. Prior to that i would at least say that Max was at risk for some time...but that is not the case anymore.

Only Blender can deal/match with whatever the Best 3D commercial software. It make me sad and happy in the same time. I hope Truespace will be 'ressurected' as a free or opensource competitor to Blender... I used 3d "general" tool: 3dsmax, maya, lightwave, carrera, blender, rhino,houdini etc... 3d "spesific" tool : sketchup, lumion, autocad, bryce, poser, dazstudio, zbrush, other CADlike...

UE 5.4 > The Rest.The fact that every company clings on to their dying engines is funny because its not gonna last.Players need graphics and smooth gameplay and games that are finished under 2 years without a massive heap of bugs using their paying customer base as beta testers..

Was never the best. Is what's left. Autodesk bought and kill soft image, 3dmax became architecture and that's it. Modo. Never pick up good animation tools. But blender is so powerful better than Maya this days. And Houdini now with animation tools will be the king, sadly companies have done so much work on top of Maya that they will not change software. (Sadly they building on old old and bad software)

Yeah...no. Dont embarass yourself with such an amount of disinformations here. Neither does Blender come close enough to Maya, nor did 3ds Max become archviz software alone as you might imply here i guess. And for animation Maya is unbeaten right now. Companies have no good reasons to give up on Maya when it serves them so well and as you mentioned also built up on top of it.

@@hound_of_justice your point of view. Companies have invested so many years and resources to build pipelines around that software, doesn't mean it is a good software just means that studios won't spend the time and money rebuilding pipelines for other software.

Quality over quantity, Maya wins with easy here no matter how many options other software such as Blender have. Animbot alone is already enough to choose Maya xD

Sorry but you're just delusional in this case..I used both and I know for sure that Maya despite it's shortcomings is still way better than blender, the only thing that Blender is truly good at is Modeling but recently didn't get much updates since the main focus is GeoNodes. Performance wise Blender still way behind, No GPU accelerated deformation, noParallel Evaluation, no Cached playback, The Rigging workflow in Blender is a nightmare hence most people use Autorigs which gives you half quality rigs. Just take a quick look at the quality & Performance rigs between Blender and Maya rigs and you'll see what I mean. the Animation Editors lack tons of standard features and the list goes on.

​​@@xox8717I roughly agree with you on this one, but none of it matters for most of the gamedev scene. If blender performance is limiting for you in any way, you are not working in game industry. Other than that, it's objectively faster to use Blender (or maybe inventor for hardsurface) to create most things needed for gamedev. There is one big exception as you foreshadowed, which is the character artist in AAA, I'll give you that one

the last blender video was 7 days ago and most of the videos before that was about blender, cant you wait?, not only that but this isnt 100% a blender channel, it covers alot of topics of 3d in general

Wow..Blackmailing someone with subscribing just because he posts about other softwares. Man, some blender users truly act like zealots. lets assume what you say is true this channel is leaning towards Autodesk centric mindest, what's the problem with that? if you don't agree with autodesk then how is that his fault? or you people either want people to worship blender only and never look at other tools.

@@xox8717 hey man, nothing wrong with that someone chooses autodesk or other company products. It's just something not interesting for me. I just saying that I was thinking that this channel was dedicated to blender. I'm not against if we see some other software related videos sometimes here, but sooner it's getting too many of them. And it's personally not interesting for me. I'm experienced Maya user, in past I used it as main production tool in my pipeline, but as I switched to blender it stopped interest me, and even started to look unreasonably uncomfortable.
