Since the term became political, ie. when the Left began using it to describe the progressive acceptance of people's differences, choices, rights, and equal worth, the meaning of "woke" expanded from its narrower, original meaning. However, I'd suggest that in both its original & expanded uses, "woke" didn't refer to a stance on trans rights or gender identity. The rightwingers put that idea onto it. They twisted it into a pejorative catch-all term for liberal values, rather than a term that previously could've been described as neutral, if not admirable (insomuch as it broadly referred to a state of awareness, enlightenment, recognition, or not being deceived). My understanding was that it originally described an awareness of society's embedded hierarchy of classes/races & an acknowledgement of the unconscious bias/inequality most white people are in denial of. Yes, it did mean that. Then other groups (gay groups, women's groups, trans groups, etc.) appropriated it to kill off prejudices in *their* spaces. The trouble is, of course, that a word, phrase or institution that is "problematic" to one group isn't to another. Even if you use a more forthright word like "racist", different races have different perceptions of what is racism and of course so does every individual person. When a word expands its definition so much that it can mean almost everything, it bereaves it of any force and as such, "woke" is understood almost exclusively in a derisive way to describe an individual. If you find everything offensive, then ultimately, you are always restless in your anger and incoherent in your views. "Woke" has lost most of its positive overtones in much the same way as "social justice" and "political correctness" that have much the same meaning: their biggest salesmen made a bad pitch.

yeah, but it went from something legitimate to refer to people who take things outside the realm of rationality when it comes to protesting or whatever...like the stuff Bill is talking about. It's only a word, not a definition. Racist used to mean prejudice against an entire race, now it can mean systemic racism, which is a system as racist. Same thing with woke; definitions change. Those are the facts.

It was identity politics when it was part of the "black community", so it really doesn't matter who else is using the term. Although it seems to be exclusively a pejorative term these days....as in, to "out" those who play identity politics. And yea.....if you haven't already guessed, identity politics is about as bad as it gets, which is why we are watching the collapse of Western Civilization.

Since the term became political, ie. when the Left began using it to describe the progressive acceptance of people's differences, choices, rights, and equal worth, the meaning of "woke" expanded from its narrower, original meaning. However, I'd suggest that in both its original & expanded uses, "woke" didn't refer to a stance on trans rights or gender identity. The rightwingers put that idea onto it. They twisted it into a pejorative catch-all term for liberal values, rather than a term that previously could've been described as neutral, if not admirable (insomuch as it broadly referred to a state of awareness, enlightenment, recognition, or not being deceived). My understanding was that it originally described an awareness of society's embedded hierarchy of classes/races & an acknowledgement of the unconscious bias/inequality most white people are in denial of. Since conservatives reflexively activate a self-righteous & defensive shield (perceiving a threat to their yet unacknowledged privilege) whenever those they look down upon offer constructive criticism, or suggest there's anything wrong with society as _they've_ crafted it, they immediately villainized the word & everyone associated with it when liberals popularized its use.

A collection of ideologies and political views grounded in anti-liberal values. Liberal in this instance means valuing individualism and personal freedom over collectivism. Identity politics attempt to lump all people from a group together and assume they all have the same view to use as a political tool, it's very much so against liberal views to lump people together by skin tone or ethnic background and assume they all have the same views.
