While many Queen fans had been hoping for a biopic about Freddie Mercury for years, a lot of them found Bohemian Rhapsody quite underwhelming.
The 2018 biopic oversimplified the life of the rock singer, telling his story mainly through traditional biopic clichés. While it did cover some of the major beats of Mercury’s life, there were all kinds of interesting things that were left out.
From his relationships that didn’t make it into the film to the way he was defiant until the very end, let’s take a look at how Bohemian Rhapsody ignored the true story of Freddie Mercury and Queen.

It was only good for the newbies but for the fans who lived through it, it was very disappointing. Very surprised that the band let the facts go. Sad. Seems like it was all about the money. The truth was better than the fiction.

Thought it was super bland. Followed the usual music biopic formula that Jake Kasdan’s Walk Hard already tore apart. You’d think a movie about a band and individual who dared to be different and unashamed of being unlike anyone else, which also very much was a theme of the movie would’ve been ya know? Not generic... Rami Malek brought his A game to this film though! He was worth the price of admission alone

I was NOT a pop fan at that time, purely metal with some jazz and classical influences. That being said, I DO remember this event, with all the performances, the drama, and seeing certain artists/bands, whom I viewed as purely studio creations, were actually able to play music as a band, and actually put some emotion into their performances. Other artists/bands only confirmed and cemented my view of them as studio creations assembled by the music industry as an artificial product used to market other artificial products in their name.

Let's be real here. The makers of Bohemian Rhapsody had to shorten down 15-20 years of the bands history, into a 2 hour and 13 minute film. There are certain parts of the bands history that are more important than others, however you still feel that the highlights of Queen's history were how the group of friends pre-Queen evolved, the amount of bass players Queen had before John Deacon, what happened before they met John Reid, the rather long period the idea for Bohemian Rhapsody was conceived over, Freddie's sexuality, his work outside Queen (which would never have supposed to be in the film because it was post-1985!), Freddie's other work (which by no means involved Queen) and last, but certainly not least, the fact that you think that Freddie literally died the day after Live Aid (which the film never, *never*, implied in any way shape or form). I am a massive Queen fan, and I really loved the movie (I might be a bit biased!) - however I didn't really bother with the inconsistencies in the storyline. It's. not. a. documentary. How come you didn't mention the fact that Rock in Rio was moved back almost 10 years in history? That bothers me more than any one of your points in the video.

Wellheck: I think this answer is purely individual and personal and possibly based on any expectations you may have brought to the movie w/ you. I believe you/we can always take away something good from a thing or an experience. So, while I didn't love or even like the movie; I tried to appreciate the things I could in order to get something out of it; but in retrospect I can't think of anything impressive or notable about this movie. I had notions in my head of what I wanted to see. I didn't realize it was a musical; not musical but A musical; so that threw me off. I didn't find the actor who played EJ attractive. Believe me, in 1972-3 Elton was very attractive. And Bernie Taupin was a veritable FOX. They were unable to fill the roles with people that replicated that vibe; disappointing. They showcased only a few of his songs from the vast spectrum of his career arc. Lots of flashbacks to his mum and childhood with the storyline mostly told via songs; not his original songs but songs written for a musical where dialogue is sung. I didn't think that added to the movie. I don't dislike musicals. This one I did dislike. Me and the two people I saw it with came out and all looked at one another like "WTF??!!!" it didn't give me what I wanted, as far as showing how EJ hookeded up w/ Dee, Nigel and Davey - which was magic. It didn't focus on high points like the making of GYBR (album) in Château d'Hérouville in France. Or other big albums. You didn't hear any deep cuts. It was only a superficial skimming off the surface of a Superstar's cataclysmic career. Actually, It put much focus on his drug and alcohol abuse on his way to the top. Coming from a life-long EJ fan; I'm giving this a D+ on a scale of A to F. Better to look at the great stuff on youtube re: those things, where you can enjoy actual footage of EJ, his band, concerts, interviews and 'making of' albums.

Death on Two Legs is written about their first manager - Freddie wrote it while he and the band were living on plain noodles and tea whilst their manager was driving around in a new Rolls Royce drinking champagne. John Reid joined just around the time of A night at the Opera which was their make or break album. He tried selling Bohemian Rhapsody (the song) to the radio stations but they wouldn’t play it as it was too long. Kenny Everett a DJ at the time stole a copy of the record and kept playing parts of it throughout a three hour stint on radio. So people started calling in wanting to hear the whole track. That public cry to hear it all sold it to the record companies and got the record into full print and circulation.

Think about how you would put together a movie of your own life, in order to convey the ideas you want to emphasize, you would have to change the stories. Especially on events too complex and would take up too much time. You'd want to convey all the ideas you want to, but you couldnt show it all, so you would mash stories together to keep it brief.

Its fascinating how people who go to see a movie walk away thinking its supposed to abide by the same rules as a documentary. Bohemian Rhapsody is a brilliant film because it really captures the essence of Freddie Mercury's life which was anything but simplistic. This movie is a celebration of his life that does not need to quibble on how many bass players the band looked at or whether Mercury was partying with Elton John. It absolutely covers the most talked about and relevant high (and low) points in his career. Having to dig into the details of every moment would have made this film a drudgery of lost details only super fans want to see covered. Its a very fair and honest profile of the artist that demonstrated his struggles with his interpersonal relations and the demons that haunted him from childhood. And yes, its a brilliant move to have the film end with Live Aid, given the gravity of what he was about to face. The film does not fabricate that moment so much as place in context how Mercury faced the battle through digging deeper into his craft. Its a very honest and very spiritual journey that amazingly captures the heart of this artist. I doubt there will ever be a film that captures the essence of such a complicated man better than this. A VERY honest film that doesn't get lost in the morbidity of gossipy footnotes.

You still have to understand that you can’t fit everything that happened to Queen during a period of over twenty years in a two hour movie, and a film can’t be to complex since people who don’t know Queen must be able to understand it. In my opinion you’re too hard on the movie when you criticize it for excluding details that doesn’t affect the overall “story” that much. A movie also needs a central conflict and an antagonist to be interesting. Everything also has to be tied together in the end, if the film would include every minor event in the bands career it would leave too many loose strings which would make the film feel unfocused. As a conclusion the movie has to exclude events that isn’t critical to the story so that and anyone could be able to understand it not just Queen fans.

If you really listened to what people were saying before the movie came out, you should've heard that Queen wanted the movie to go on in a heartwarming and somewhat unrealistic way. If it went the historical way, it would've been dark and gloomy which doesn't go well in a biography movie.
@Harry-iq4xt
@Harry-iq4xt 5 лет назад
In the beginning Sacha Noam Baron Cohen was going to take on the role however he fell out with Queen over how the movie should go. Apparently they wanted Freddy Mercury to pass away in the middle of the movie and show how Queen persevered and went on without Mercury, however, Sacha found this really disrespectful and dropped the role because of it.

Harry Guy Actually, I believe it was the other way around. Cohen allegedly wanted to show a dark side to Freddie’s life and a downward spiral while the members of Queen wanted to show the good man Freddie was and what a talented, inspiring man he was and not show him dying in the movie.

SoKal __ Freddie was going to be played by Sacha Baron Cohen - who played Borat etc He was kicked after he had a hissy fit on set that they weren’t going to include Freddie having sex with a guy, then another guy later before going back to Mary. It didn’t happen in real life. Apparently, Roger Taylor walked down to the set straight up to Cohen and stood nose to nose with him and said “You’re f+*king sacked you useless f+*king piece of shit. You have ten minutes to clear off or I personally ruin you”. Cohen decided to take his time and left after fifteen minutes. Roger made some calls... Turns out that an “old” rocker can still go! It's literally THE BAND MOVIE. -The lead singer who starts thinking he's better than everyone -The girl who almost breaks the band up(except its a boy in this instance) -The big band fight that gets resolved with someone thinking of a hit song -The record exec that tells them they wont make it -The fast cut touring montage All of which would be forgivable if they didn't choose to leave out/change so much. Neglecting his opera interests, Highlander/Princes of the Universe video, the ballet stuff, literally any of the work they did after Live Aid, etc was bad enough. The way they treated the other band members was criminal. It's a 5/10 at best, only for Malek's performance (which was good given his part wasn't very well written) and of course the magnificent soundtrack.

That night I fell in love with Freddie and Queen , I knew Queen of course since I am more than 50 years old but I had never paid attention to them or any other band as a matter of fact. So I guess the movie did exactly what Brian May and Roger Taylor wanted to do with it, mission accomplished.

I think this movie is a perfect example of how altering a real story (and if you really look at it, in the end these are mostly details) for the sake of drama and a better story worked really well. It should be expected that the real story is not "good" enough to make an entertaining movie without going into overtime so people who want to know about everything that happened and care about the entire story can watch videos like this and documentaries (of which there a lot of great ones!) to fill in the holes.

While I did think the movie could’ve been more accurate, I do understand why they left out that stuff. The point of BoRap was to introduce a new generation to Queen, and they basically had to tell a whole life story in a 2 hour film. When you’re making a movie you have to think about what you’d like the general tone to be and what points are most important for you to convey. You have to make sacrifice. I thought the movie did a great job depicting the overall spirit of Queen and Freddie, and was also a great film!

well... It HAS been about 7 months since this movie released. I don't know why we are still talking about this LOL. And I guess "truth" is quite subjective. If Brian and Roger think that the movie came close to the spiritual truth of the band then I don't mind most of the things they left out/fabricated. I do wish some things made it in of course; especially a little bit more on Deak(c)y and Freddie's relationship and a little bit more of Jim and Freddie. However, the end product that came out in the theaters, in true Queen spirit, entertained and uplifted people. Walking out, we all felt like champions and I suppose that's what is important! Those who wanted to know more/the historically accurate story obviously went out and did their own research later on!
