Andy, just want to say thanks for your most recent series of training videos. 10 years ago I ran 1:17 hm & 16:36 5km and wish I'd seen all your info. Your honesty and wrestle with runners ego which you've got a great balance on and ability to adapt is real. I like your approach. I'm starting as an over 40 to run again and will be dialling in to your updates. Smash the 10km today!

Thanks mate very much appreciated! It’s a balance we all battle I think and it’s tough when you’re in good form to cut back a bit and listen to your body but it’s got to be done!

What I've been doing is a threshold run session in the morning and a bike threshold session in the afternoon/evening. Less risky for an older runner like me (I'm 45 yo.) I'm also training for a triathlon now so it's good training for my goal race but after that I'll be training for a half marathon and then a marathon so I'm keen to hear how you're gonna use the double thresholds in your marathon training.

Yeah that’s a great way to do things, I know a few people who do it that way! I’ll be breaking down my plan soon 👌

Another inspiring video Andy. In the last 2 years my 10k & HM times have come down by 6:10 & 8:20 minutes respectively. Looking to take it to the next level! Typically I do club speed session on Tuesday, moderate run Wednesday, club run Thursday, Parkrun Saturday and long run Sunday. Got a lot of race over the summer. So may give double threshold days a try in September.

Really interesting video Andy. I bought a Wattbike recently before I got injured as something that I use to help develop my running. I’ve really enjoyed the cycling more than I thought I would and now able to do a few runs a week. I’m looking forward to seeing how it can progress my training as I move forward. I prefer to run early morning and never a fan of evening runs, but have no issues jumping on the bike for a hour or two in the evening. My quads are certainly getting stronger. Best of luck with the upcoming races.
@TheFODRunner
@TheFODRunner 2 года назад
Yeah I think you’ll find if you can get a run done in the morning then spin the legs out in the evening on the bike you’ll see some big benefits, it’s a great way to compliment the running but without the impact!

i can see the benefits of this kind of training, and i am tempted to try it, but......i have to respect my age, and i will keep my commitment to take my neighbors dog along for the morning walk/run. We both enjoy that morning routine a lot...so i will path on that.......still there is a whisper in my ear, when my ego is telling me to go out there, do it and get in a couple of racing years edit: i am very late to the dance, but i finally found a Hyperion tempo with a 30% discount and ordered it. I am very happy, it is my first Brooks after almost 7 years. I have been a Brooks fan boy in the late 80th and my lifetime marathon PB has been run in a Brooks Conquest, which i still have in my possession. My feet have grown a bit, so i probably will not run in those again

@@TheFODRunner yes i saw you wearing them in today`s video...that reminded me to check again for a good deal, and this time i was lucky, in a smaller size, it would be much easier.....there has developed a big competition within the tempo/moderate run category, to make it into my summer rotation, but just 8 spots for the guarantee of regular monthly use

Hey Andy , good to see you are doing well - in general , if you don’t have a lactate reader , lactate threshold is reached at 88% max HR - so that should be a reference for anyone and make sure you don’t go past that
@TheFODRunner
@TheFODRunner 2 года назад
Thanks buddy 👌 great shout, should of mentioned that in the video! HR is a good(ish) way of monitoring things, it’s just as you know, so many variables can affect it!

Is there an alternative to using the blood testing? I know it’s more reliable/scientific but surely there’s a alternative for us who don’t want to use it or doctors who don’t want us to prick our fingers all the time
@TheFODRunner
@TheFODRunner 9 месяцев назад
Not really, not for proper lactate testing. I used HR but it’s not accurate, you can get close but it’s not going to give you the exact answers like a lactate monitor would
@paperjourni8964
@paperjourni8964 Год назад
what was the reason the Threshold runs are not heartrate orientated? ah, probably talking about the repeats not the tempo runs? Shouldn‘t heartrate give you the better orientation as speed will become faster?
@TheFODRunner
@TheFODRunner Год назад
Lactate levels don’t always correspond to HR… HR can fluctuate too much day to day and factors like illness or dehydration can affect HR, they would make it go up, whereas the lactate levels would always stay where they are regardless of those elements… so lactate is the best way to go if you can

Andy, did you do any long, long, short, short or was it always long-ish and then short in the evening with more intensity? How did you recover enough with work, etc...

Just out of curiosity, how often do you do strength training? Back in my glory days I used to do 2 double days, but never a double threshold day. Usually it'd be 1 session and 1 short easy run. That got me strong. As an aside, I know you have said you felt the Varpofly V2 was different to V1. I had a delivery of the Ekiden version yesterday and I swear the midsole feels a bit softer/different to my other V2 (which are the original aqua colour). It's subtle, but I think it's there....I haven't run in them yet, mind. Having said that, I honestly think the Alphafly is the better shoe to the Vaporfly. Feels less natural, certainly at 3k pace or faster, but I don't think even at those paces it's slower, and I think it's faster at 5k and above to be honest.

I just don’t think most runners should do double thresh. Those Norwegians do a lot of things as average folk shouldn’t do. Injury prevention is number one. Risk be reward isn’t worth it for 90% of us.
