How Can Obito Use Kamui Without His Mangekyou Sharingan? 

Can Obito beat Itachi?

It's the same thing as when Itachi used Tsukuyomi with the 3 Tomoe Sharingan in the anime because the animators haven't seen his Mangekyo design yet, but in the manga when Itachi uses Tsukuyomi we just don't see his eyes at all.

It's been revealed in the guidebooks that Kamui activates subconsciously/passively, and therefore it's not a stretch to say that his MS just flickers on and off precisely when it's needed. Another possibility is that Obito is simply always in the Kamui dimension, and only becomes tangible again when he wants to attack or make a point like when he caught Suigetsu's attack (with Zabuza's sword), so he can appear with his three tomoe with his projection because he isn't really spamming Kamui, which helps explain why he doesn't go blind besides the Hashirama cells, too.

It's CRUSHING to see obito being bullied by the fans

Based on the "seemingly phased through rocks" statement Madara made to Obito when he was in Madara's secret lair recovering, I always took that as meaning that after Kakashi and Rin left Obito behind and the cave began to further collapse, his Kamui somehow activated (subconsciously) and it caused him to phase through the ground and fall into part of Madara's secret chamber which happened to be underneath them. I guess that doesn't make sense if Kamui is a Mangekyo Sharingan ability since Obito shouldn't have had it at that point, but that was always what I thought happened. I mean, was it ever stated how Madara found and recovered Obito?

I always just left the answer as Obito having half his body being made out of Zetsu which was enhanced with Hashirama Cells. Plus he wore the Spiral Zetsu (the one obsessed with human poop) as a suit of organic armor. Remember Obito was able to use wood style from his Hashirama cells. He used wood style to murk the Anbu who killed Rin and he also used wood style to kill most of the initial Akatuski members (back when the Akatuski were led by Yahiko's original vision).

Can't really be a plot hole if no one is even able to see that deeply into the mask of Obito XD. Like he could be switching between the three tomoe and mangekyo fast enough to keep people guessing

Also, you don't need to have the Mangekyou Sharringan active to use Mangekyou Sharringan abilities. Madara used Susanoo to escape Gaara's Sand Pyramid without even having any eyeballs. Its not too much of a stretch to believe that other Mangekyou Sharringan abilities can be used as well. Izanagi can be used even when the user has been dead for weeks (as shown by Madara.

During the Obito vs Konan fight, you do very clearly see Obito using Kamui with his regular sharingan. It was as he was attempting suck in her paper attacks while falling before discovering that they were paper bombs.

In other situations, primarily with Sasuke & Madara, they have ocular abilities assigned to a single eye. I suspect Obito’s ability to phase through objects is an ability of his standard sharingan, but only in the eye he kept, while Kamui is an ability of both eyes.

The main plot twist is why he never used his woodstyle again

They didn’t want to give away his identity before they revealed Madara. How obvious would it be if he had Kakashi’a same eyes?

Kishimoto made it a point to not show Obito/Tobi using his MS in the manga to not give away the obvious connection to Kakashi, the anime however said f*ck that. The anime tends to change allot of things from the manga for some odd reason, look at how Sakura was portrayed in the anime compared to the manga

I think a simple solution for This issue would have been if obitos one eyed mask coverd his mangekyo while his other spare sharingan that he used for isanagi would show through the Hole in the mask. Its shown that he can faze through thinngs without lokking at them so it would work, It would be a bit wierd if he was able to suck people in to the kamui dimention without being able to see them but it makes more sence than him using kamui with base sharingan.

Why Ten tails jinchuriki Obito couldn't use kamui, but ten tails jinchuriki Madara could? That's a lot more interesting question.

I thought exactly this: how can people say he used Kamui with only 3 tomoe when they never show his eye while he uses Kamui? Turns out its an anime only mistake. The fact this had to be addressed is kinda lame

Besides that, the most common excuse is Hashirana Cells. I swear Hashirama Cells is the perfect excuse for any plot hole in the series.

I always assumed that they didn't want fans to know that Obito could be Obito by having him seen with the same MS design as Kakashi's MS that was given to him by Obito.

I will say the only time you arguably see him use Kamui with his base sharingan is in chapter 510 early on when he is in the sea of paper bombs. You see a paper bomb what looks like going through his mask, the only other explanation I can think of is that the bomb is in a Crack in his mask. A scene before he says he is using the phasing ability but in the next scene no explosions are going off so maybe he wasn't using Kamui in the in between scene

Just checked the Konan vs. Tobi fight on the Viz site. Chapter 510, page 3, upper left panel you can clearly see Tobi with a base Sharingan and a paper bomb passing through his face, indicating Kamui is active. So that was not just an anime error.

Obits uses it subconsciously, this has been stated in the guide books. There is also the flashbacks in the Manga where Madara talks about finding Obito in the tunnels he made. He says that Obito is lucky he wasn't crushed by the boulders and that it's like he passed right through them. This implies that Obito had Kamui long before he had access to his MS.

@DygoKnight, my theory is that near the end of Obito's fight with Konan, after using Izanagi to save himself, he had already burned through his limit of using Kamui for 5 minutes and thus his Mangekyou was deactivated at that point when he used Izanagi. That's why we see the three tomoe Sharingan there...

There is one scene in the War Arc right before the reveal where he uses Kamui without the Mangeku being active when Might Guy is attacking him.

I also like to believe that he maybe even used a soft genjutsu that made his eyes look like 3 tomoe sharingan especially since he was facing people that were close to kakashi or kakashi himself. Kind of like how Sasuke deceived Danzo, just a slight deception that is also effective in him hiding his true identity.

My headcanon is that kamui was unlocked by getting obitos mangekyo. But he doesn't need mangekyo to use it. It was just to have access to the jutsu

the audience can’t see it but the characters can, if edo minato ever saw kakashi’s mangekyo then he should’ve been able to find the link without obito’s mask breaking because he should’ve seen it as he was being kamwi’d during his fight with 14 year old obito

Yes! I knew you'd state this as the reason. I've seen the whole thing play out amongst fans. I'm not gonna say I'm super genius level... Cause I'm not, but as a casual fan I still thought this might be it, the reason Kishimoto made the choice to begin with. He may write himself into corners from lack of planning ahead now and then, sure, but as you said, he's not stupid.

My theory as to how obito's sharingan never fades: We see madara with a spare sharingan when hes an old man, its possible it was a mankeyo sharingan (and when it comes to madara, thats almost a requirement). Madara would have told obito about EMS, because obito was able to help sasuke get EMS. So to my mind, its possible obito used old madara's spare sharingan to make his MS into EMS. Even if madara's spare sharingan wasn't a mangekyo sharingan, remember that itachi fought sasuke, heavily implying that sasuke's non-MS sharingan, would be sufficient to make itachi's MS into EMS.

He has sharogan elsewhere on his body underneath his clothing. Remember he has a stockpile of sharigan(from the massacre of his clan). He could theoretically cover his entire body with sharigan similar to danzo but woth greator control.

I just figured that it was an animation error. But what's more pressing to me is that Obito still had stuff like his base Sharingan active after being crushed and waking up in the cave. Like... why? When Sasuke and others are near death, their Sharingan isn't activated due to fatigue and chakra levels or whatever else. So, it's odd that when Obito wakes up, his Sharingan is already active. Weird to me imo

Here's a bigger plot hole regarding Obito: When Konan fought Obito, she had a very clear winning move after Obito revealed his Izanagi technique and explained it. Konan could have just fatally injured herself and she would have won

It was said that he did kind of phased thru some of the rubble that's why the damage wasn't too fatal

He does phase Konan's paper bombs with 3 tomoe Sharingan, but it's Obito, he's notorious for having plot armour until he turns Juubi mode

Simple animation error. Kishimoto was careful to hide Uchiha eyes before he finalized the mangekyo designs when they used it. Pierrot was not that careful

Kamui was so op they had to put plot holes on plot holes

In the episode where kishimoto revealed kakashi's face we see that he uses contact lens to his own sharingan. So that could be that. Besides him still having regular sharingan when using kamui and not changing to MS is for me like a plot device rather than plot hole. Kishimoto did this in order to hide obito's identity.

There is a Scene in the Anime.A little bit before Obitos reveal.. He fights vs Naruto, Kakashi and Guy. Guy uses his Nunchaku's to hit Obito. The Camera looks directly on Obito 3 Tomoe Eye and u see how the Nunchaku's slide trough Obito in the same Scene without MS is activated. Maybe u say its a Mistake,and in the Manga its not the same, but i think its just for the plot, to not reveal him showing the real Look of his MS...

I always felt like he could use his slipping ability without activating the mangekyou, kind of like how some abilities with the normal sharingan can only be used after activating mangekyou or senju chakra. I also feel like his body and soul is connected to the Kamui dimention at the cellular level.

It's a pretty easy explanation. If people see that Obito has the same mangekyo pattern as Kakashi and remember Kakashi's friend gave him his Sharingan. Then it would be pretty easy to assume that the guy under the mask is Obito.

I think Kishimoto only made it so that characters can use Komui if they first unlock the mangekyo sharingon they can use the base sharingon just make it seem like an excuse because NO other character has used their mangekyo powers in base

When Obito “died” I thought he _initially_ got hit with one boulder. But the whole reason why they had to abandon him is because a whole fucking cave was about to fall on him… which it did 💀 so by that logic he should be dead. Surviving an avalanche of boulders vs a single boulder are lowkey 2 different things

tbh the only solution the writer should’ve don’t is when the ability activate the first thing that goes to the dimension is the eye and the whole animation that comes with ability would’ve been enough to hide the sharingan shape patterns

Even in the anime, obito was masterful with kamui, maybe he threw on a genjustu on it at the same time, or maybe he used ninjutsu to affect the actual light reflecting off his eye. Not impossible

Tobi is Obito is a retcon. If not? Well at least his motivations were retcon. Tobis whole fight with kohan is an indicator.

What I don't understand is why does Obito's right eye have both his abilities. Shouldn't his right eye make him intangible and his left eye should have short/long range kamui?

The reason that we never see obitos ms before the war arc and why obito never went blind evem tho hes spaming kamui more offten than naruto uses a rasengan might be because Some mamgekyo abbilitys can be used without eyes/dont use up ur eyesight obitos kamui might be one of them (like how madara can fight and use perfect susanoo while being blind)

Will you review Sasuke retsuden manga? or how they already forgot that genjutsu can be casted with a finger like Itachi did with Nartuo at the beggining of Shippuden and you don't need eye contact at all? Like it would instantaneously solve the manga plot if Sasuke just did that, which he's clearly skilled enough to do so, if he could put all 9 Tail Beasts under the genjutsu with just 1 glance.

you are actually wrong there are multiple instances you see him use kamui while also seeing his Sharingan. most especially during the war arc. but to name a couple: the moment his Sharingan is revealed to Kakashi and the other leaf ninja during sasuke's fight with itachi and when guy, Kakashi and naruto are trying to fighting him in the war just before kakashi figures out who he is we can see guy's nunchuks phase through his face and the 3 tomoe sharingan at the same time in both the manga and the anime

It's honestly kinda annoying how often people notice animation mistakes in anime (not just Naruto, but in general), fail to realize that they are animation mistakes, and instead of checking the manga for the same moment to see what happens there, they just accuse the manga writer of a plot hole. Or, just as bad (or worse), read/watch videos about people pointing out this "plot hole", take it at face value, and then go around spreading the misinformation even further. The default response should always be to check the manga and find out if the "error" is also in the source material. Anime isn't story canon, it's just an adaptation. There's such thing as errors in adaptation. It's just a thing that happens. Most people are familiar with the idea of filler, so is it really so difficult to believe that the anime can stretch the truth in other ways as well? Another community that's prominently guilty of this is the Jojo fandom with their various "Araki forgot" moments, many of which are simple animation mistakes in the anime that are not present in the original manga. Hamon Beat does a rather in-depth series of videos debunking many such "Araki forgot" moments, as well as highlighting some genuine ones. It's worth a watch if you like Jojo or are simply interested in the phenomenon I've described in general.

The point Madara was trying to make was that Obito imperfectly phase through the rock...so it's like he had the early stages of kamui

Not disputing your arguement but I think the Obito phased through the rock is not referring to the rock which crushed his right side, shortly after that the entire chamber they were in collapsed. I beleive people (and Madara) is saying that should have killed him but perhaps he phased through it.
