Sharing his own experiences in government and policy, designer Joel Yong has written a “love letter” to all the creatives out there, challenging silos and arguing that artists and designers can belong anywhere and everywhere. In fact, they may even be integral in the very places that are deemed unconventional.

The projects discussed are informed recommendations and were not necessarily yet implemented at the time of this talk.

He is working at the White House with the United States Digital Service in Summer 2024. Joel Yong is a designer with a practice of applying design methodologies to improve government systems and policies. Previously, he has worked on President Biden’s Executive Order for Advancing Racial Equity in federal government data, the development of the Colorado Privacy Act, and expanding Medicaid access in Rhode Island. What a great talk... I've been working as a creative for 4 years and have been facing burnout from my job. Currently looking for different ways to apply my skills rather than just be assigned grunt work all the time. Thank you for inspiring me to branch out and apply my skills in other career tracks as well.

Excellent talk, well done! Really opened my eyes as a creative who works in the medical and public health fields. The medical approach is so stagnant, and I see hope through utilizing what I've learned in public health to tailor our deliverables for our intended audience(s) versus trying to make an existing framework become sustainable for those who may slip through the cracks. Thank you for realizing this possibility, makes total sense as you emphasized the need to prioritize service populations from the very beginning.

Wonderful, Joel, thank you. Sir Kenneth Robinson would be proud of you. The TEDx talk I'm preparing right now is in a similar vein.

I feel fortunate to know you and hear this talk! I was snapping throughout, you raised such good points and really inspired me to think of creativity as an applicable skill, rather than a hobby or singular trait. I also loved hearing about how much change you've already made in your community! Well done :)

"To think critically about" stop right there because you already lost so many people 😅

Why? Creatives can't think critically?

Fact check. The census bureau counts homeless people by looking at soup kitchens, homeless shelters. There are also social workers that help keep count of these people.

The way services for people who are unhoused keep track of those populations probably wouldn't reach the accuracy of a census that captures the same info about people who are housed, even if shelters had enough space.

Listen to what people want, then figure out how to make that. Duh.
