John freakin Simmons, your one of a kind man. I’m one of the ones that gonna listen. I too built my entire business about two years ago on all my credit. You are a god send and gave me a great idea to seek a personal business loan. I met you in person at NAMM too and your the same freakin great person . I look up to you. Much love man

Amen man! Amen! I haven't made it as big as you , i dont DJ anymore but i went thru a very similar situation with credit cards, my first system was bought on credit and it tanked my credit score because i didnt pay it off right away either, i was paying 26% for $14k worth of stuff and was in that debt for 5-8 years until i met my wife and she straightened me out and helped me get back on track. Amazing how hard those times can be. I won't ever go back to that place where i owe money like that. What a terrible way to start off. Now i own a few systems just for fun and don't have credit card debt anymore! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the transparency! I know the credit card life far too well. This year I was finally able to pay off all but 1 of my cards.(damn costco card) over $24k in credit card debt going into this year and its almost all gone...

It takes a big men to come forward on the difficult beginnings & I can totally relate to what you've been through. I was in for about 30k and paying interests. When I finally realized how much interest I had paid in a month, I got so frustrated that I decided to make a plan & I was able to pay it off in 1.5 year. In our industry it's all about planing and being realistic with the Return On Investment time. I'm glad to have found you on youtube! I wish you all the best!

Great video John. Thanks for opening up about your financial history and struggles. Credit is great if it is managed well. The best thing you did was to get a business loan. You can also use paypal credit, no interest if paid within 6 months. I use it occasionally. Otherwise all my equipment is paid cash.

Looks like we both started off life in a similar way. By the time I hit my mid-20s, I was up to my ass in debt and paying it off was a real struggle...I was almost 30 when I cleared it all. A needed push for my part-time business was getting laid off my full time job in November 2019; a pay-out from that gave me a lump sum that I invested in much-needed gear upgrades among other things. I had planned to do that full time...then the pandemic hit. As my business is bringing in no money at the moment, I ended up going back to full time work in Telecoms, which covers the bills and also allows me to invest a little in my business here and there. I always seem to be buying cables right now...

Good video about credit cards. They actively go after college students, getting you to run up credit cards & student loans. One thing people need to understand is there is being a DJ/DJing & then there is business. Everyone always talks about the first but never the second. You have to have a plan worked out financially. If your plan is to pay for everything with credit cards likely there isn’t a plan. There are a few ways to finance equipments a reasonable rates but it won’t really be possible without a good business and business plan. Early on I worked SBA on my state college campus which had people there to help guide you with your business plans, applying business loans, certifications & so on. Very helpful.

Thats a Good Piece of advice John! I have mostly bought all my Gear in cash, thats have been tough because sometimes it takes a lot of time to get the money and also considering that here in my country Chile everything is so expensive but at the end of the day its quite comforting. Now im just waiting for the venues to start coming again because I need some the investment money to return, its not too much USD 15.000 but you have to start somewhere . Im afraid sooner or later i will have to use a credit card but im trying to postpone thet moment the most that i can. Thanks again!

Great Video, I did it just like you and am at that point of needing to escape potential demise. Credit Cards are the only way when you're starting, no bank will give a young person money for a startup. If you have family or friends and spread it out in small chunks that is really the best move. The CCs are awful but can be used wisely; a lot of companies will offer no interest for the first year for example. You just have to always hit that payment to make sure you don't get hit with all the interest in a year.

Its been a while since I've seen your videos. I did see you as a baller. I know there is always a silver lining and most people don't know that. I know when I started I used Amex and used musical company's to get gear and pay it down and not use any credit cards. I haven't worked since Mid March because of the pandemic which linked my business so I have all this gear paying storage fees every month with no help from the SBA. I should have established business credit as its much better and necessary for business. Thanks for John!

Thank you for sharing this. This year my wife and I refinanced our mortgage, it was time for renewal but it allowed us to wrap in our credit card debt. Approx $20K off credit card debt that was a mix of gear and bills and paying the minimums. You're right though, a lot of people are going to make the same mistake but the market is setup like this. BEWARE!!!! DO NOT BUY ON CREDIT CARDS!!! Get a loan or finance, something with monthly payments that has an end date. Credit Card debt is never ending, eventually you'll hit your limit and then the interest till accumulate beyond the limit if you can keep up or make lump payments. You'll say oh I use that $1200 from the wedding or whatever you're doing, but you won't. You'll have expenses and you'll have the money in hand and you'll spend it on more gear forgetting about the debt you have.

Great Video for someone just getting started and even someone who's been in the business for awhile! Credit cards are a wonderful thing until reality hits and bites you in the butt if you're not very careful (been there, done that). I'm on the left coast and your office costs are about 1/3 to 1/4 of ours ($1,100 for 1,000 sq. ft. and that's the low end in my area).

I'm so glad there's no real culture of living on credit here. We don't have the concept of a credit score. I have a Visa card, but it's only used for some online shopping and it's payed back each month. Everything else gets bought with a debit card. The only things bought on credit here are a house and maybe a car.
