That's the downside of being famous for never missing. When you fail- you fail hard. That's why people are more forgiving towards DreamWorks. When they fail- people just shrug it off and pretend the bad movie doesn't exist.

with Disney's/Pixar's past of golden movies it just sets a standard of expectations to see and if expectations aren't met it just hurts to see them be average when they are or WERE capable of making much better! it was only a matter of time to see Disney becoming stale

@@Lechgangwell not really, the Shrek movies (at least the first one) were actually really good if you detach them from modern-day kids animated movies. It was Disney's antithesis and back in the day it was surprising to see a fairytale that isn't grand and elegant like that. Not only that, it still delivers a nice message about expectations, emotional shut-ins and what beauty truly is. It's the only animated movie I have seen with a girl embracing her "ugliness", Disney never had the balls to make a girl character unattractive till this day

@@billcipher8645 Eh, it definitely isn't instant. They don't start falling for each other until the _second_ day. ;) Also, to be fair, Wade is very much a Romeo-like character in that he mistakes momentary intensity of feeling for depth of feeling. He's more of a genuinely nice person than Romeo is, which makes this salvageable, and there's actual chemistry between them (I think this actually isn't even worthy of being called a "pun" despite the movie trying to make one out of it; they're Aristotilean elements, and it would be alchemy if it were anything), despite what I've seen some people say. The one thing that I am surprised they didn't do was have his search for purpose mean he was actually able to bond with the dad over the shop and, if not take it over, at least take Ember's place as trainee with intent to take over eventually. This would free Ember up to pursue her dreams outside of it while still upholding the family tradition in a new and weird way.

Every comments section revolving a movie is filled with people comparing it to the best movie that company has ever made or a movie with a similar trope but a different story that they think is a better movie. I used to just watch what was on TV and decide what I liked based on that. Now I feel like there's a million people telling me what I can or cannot like based on whatever's trending or what hasn't been done. That's why I just don't watch movie channels talking about carttons now, especially if they seem really judgy. I like liking animated films, I consider it a hobby. Here's the problem - this story has been done before in less than a decade, it's basically Pixar's spin to Zootopia, in lieu of mammals, we get earthy elements. Remember, Zootopia had weak trailer promotion too, which is why it was a surprise hit, no one at Disney expected the film to earn a billion at the box office, then an Oscar for best animated feature. In addition, Zootopia + elaborated on the plot, Mr, Big's story for example, showed Zootopia in an earlier age, before the city was retrofitted to accommodate all mammals, and how Mr. Big and his family proactively impacted the city's evolution. Elemental may had a new spin to an old story, it is not enough to entice the interest of the general audience, moreover, Pixar no longer has a monopoly on animated films, it has to compete with other Disney films, Illumination and Dreamworks, with these choices the audience may likely explore, then choose what they want, hence the waning attention for new Pixar releases.

Aside from the setting and subtextual racism allegory, I don’t see how exactly “Elemental” and “Zootopia” are that similar. I felt exactly the same UNTIL I saw the film. The Immigrant part of this story cannot be overlooked and it is the singular defining part of the whole thing. I feel like Elemental should've been released when The Good Dinosaur came out, and here's why. Pixar's mantra has more or less been "Find a challenge in animation, then use that as our premise for our films." And you can see this in their early days of film making. Toy Story - How to make fluid 3D animation work. Bug's Life - How to animate multiple models with multiple limbs all at once. Monster's Inc - How to give varying textures to different character models. The Incredibles - How to make believable human character models while keeping over the top animation. Ratatouille - How to give detail to food and ingredients. While all of these were great for the early days of 3D animation, we've reached a point where all of that is the norm, and Pixar's just been struggling to keep up with this experimental and innovative time.

the trailers were so bad that I didn't really know how to feel about this movie, but then I went to see it for myself and was pleasantly surprised, I really quite enjoyed seeing someone who basically has, for lack of a better term, a disability. ember cant really do much in the main part of town cause it could hurt her or even kill her. as someone with a medical issue that will be with me for the rest of my life; it was really nice to see. cause its hard not being able to do the things you like or may like simply cause of the situation. also, it was a more believable romcom than even some of the greats. trying to not spoil the movie in the comments but the "I'm so lucky" scene with wade is prolly my favorite scene. there was so much emotion in it and its...just a good film. the first time I watched it, it seemed pretty jumbled; so this is deff a two or more watch movie IMO. but tldr; liked the movie a lot and I think you should go see it at least once in theaters to make your own opinion of it and find something to love about it, even if its a small part.

The marketing was a real shame. If they had advertised it with the immigrant aspect as the focus with the rom-com as the side plot, i think I'd havebeen a lot more interested. As it was, they only advertised the rom-com, which already looked kind of generic (there's been opposites attract stories before). I might have streamed it purely because the world looked neat, but that isn't enough for me. Since we made the comparison to Zootopia, those trailers did pull in the murder mustery aspect of the film along with the spectacle of the imagery.

Aside from marketing focusing more on Clod than anything, the movie is extremely tame and generic. The messaging about immigration is kind of strained with the fact that the water people are extremely dangerous to fire people in a more grounded way that they could upright die in their environment. (It could be seen as a generational racism or gentrification metaphor but it isn't a strong one) It's a love story first. It's not groundbreaking or amazing or exciting. And the story beats have been treaded many times before. I can see why even after trailers and general reviews people still don't want to see the movie.

Pixar and big companies in general seem to avoid making films with a neiche or specific audience. I’m getting pretty tired of seeing movies for everyone because they can never use the potential they create because they have a vivid fear they could alienate somebody. @Khelzugah
@Khelzugah Год назад
While I love the story of the movie and can appreciate it for showing the story of a child not just wanting to take over the family buisness from some rarely seen angles, I end up with the feeling that Pixar is having more and more problems with the fantastical elements of their movies. Like: Toy stories really was a story about toys. Their desires and fears are all affected by that nature. It's of course something we can also relate to, but the characters in toy story wouldn't work if they weren't toys. But there isn't really a reason for the characters to be elementals in this movie to tell this story. Other then, of course, the need to have a "Wow"-element to draw people in to watch the movie in the first place. (Which is fine. You need to get people to watch your stuff somehow. And they are doing some wonderful creative and technical impressive stuff in this movie. I don't want to discredit that.) But with this movie in particular I feel like the character story and the story of the world are just not harmonizing at all where the only positiv I can think of is the fact that it really drives home just how unwelcoming the other elments are to the fire people and how unwilling they are to adjust anything in their city for the new people. I do say that there is atleast one point of the Air and Earth elementals in the city. I think the allegory would be even more weird if this was just "Water City". Elemental City atleast implies that everyone *should* be welcomed there. A water city may end up going too much in the direction of full on segregation and end up making points in favor for it by accident. So yeh. Nice movie still in the end. But can somebody either give Pixar the freedom to just embrace character stories or have them work on stories that are designed for the specific world they are playing in?

I went to watch it bc i thought it was insane how much people were hating on something they hadn’t even seen yet and the animation was fun (they had dropped a few posts about the animating process too and I find it all fascinating) Imagine my surprise when I hear her parents speaking broken English and her feeling intense guilt about wanting to be her own person (and worse, an artist, not even a doctor or engineer smh) despite her parents sacrifice to continue their legacy (TOO VALID). The “you speak so well” joke made me giggle bc I have heard variations of that myself. I was genuinely surprised that the root of her anger problems was understood and that he helped her realize that. Now I’m even more pissed that the marketing showed absolutely NONE of that. Yeah I cringed alot. Typical rom com. The climax was nice, cliche-ish but with a different spin (no they’re not ACTUALLY mad at each other). The end was hopeful and the credits were funny too. The movie has a lot of heart in it, and definitely deserves better. Once again people jump on a hate train before even giving the movie a try. I don’t think it should be supported solely because it is an original IP. It should be supported because of the heart and genuine character relationships. The movie truly got shafted by ads and objectively better films (spiderverse, cmon you know it). So far, you're the only RU-vidr I've seen with the most accurate review of this movie. The marketing really did it sooo dirty. I may not be an immigrant, but what Ember struggled throughout the film (specifically the pressure on Ember taking over her father's shop vs what she actually wants to do) is exactly what I've been through. It hit so close to home for me, and what Ember said to Wade during their argument near the last act was extremely true due to how I was raised, and I found myself relating to Ember a whole lot. This movie was extremely personal, and I could feel the director's whole heart and soul in it. It resonated with me on an extremely high level, and though it isn't ground-breaking or a masterpiece, it is a genuinely good film. Also, the romance felt realistic to me and these two are truly such a wholesome and sincere couple, probably the best I've ever witnessed. I do think people are being way too hard on this movie, but I probably won’t watch it myself until it hits streaming. One thing that does bother me though is that Ember and Wade are clearly meant to be a stand-in for an interracial couple, but the movie unintentionally justifies the segregation issue. The fire people are actually dangerous to be around. In one of the trailers, Ember accidentally burns the leaves off of an earth elemental and her heat causes Wade to boil and evaporate. Likewise, water and air can easily extinguish a fire. All this makes it seem justified in keeping fire separated from the other elements, which isn’t really a good message for an anti-racism movie to have. It also detaches it from real world racism. People of different races aren’t inherently dangerous to each other. You’re not gonna keel over from touching someone of a different race than you because, ultimately, race is superficial. Regardless of race, we’re all humans. The elementals, on the other hand, are fundamentally different beings than each other and can pose a danger to one another just by existing. As a result, Wade and Ember come off more as an exception to the rule, rather than proving how stupid the rule itself is. Honestly, I’m kinda sick of movies using stand-ins as allegories for racism. They want to talk about it, but are too scared to outright say it with human characters and human races. They always have to be something else like animals, elements, zombies, etc. It’s taking the safe way out to avoid offending anyone, but dampening the message.
