It's not just scaring yourself with your imagination, experiences that have already happened can cause serious anxiety. Your mind replays these events.
@anxietycentre
@anxietycentre 3 года назад
Your mind can replay past traumatic events. But we can eliminate that by working through our past events until they become historical events rather than emotional events. Working with an experienced therapist is the most effective way to do that.

So true... I finally started recovering yesterday - noticeable improvement in pain - and then got worried that I would relapse and had stress, anxiety couldn't sleep and now have the pain again. Well? What now? I now know, praise God, improvement is possible. I'm going to rest more today and then get back to dealing my main stressor. God give me grace to trust him. I do not like pain!

Thank you so much, Jim, for all your research and work you have put into anxietycentre! I have been encouraged by what you have written there, as well. I am currently working with one of your therapists and she has been a HUGE support. My road to recovery has had dips and valleys but when I look at it overall I can see improvement. Sometimes I am even in awe that no symptoms or sensations occurred in places that I've had them before!!! For me, all the hard work I am learning to do has been worth it. I am learning that not everyday is easy and I need to be patient with that. I occasionally have spells of depersonalization when I’m in a group or crowd situation where I have to sit still, like church or meetings at work. These spells were terrifying at first and I had no idea they are an anxiety symptom. I just thought I was going crazy. When they happen I’ll feel either like I’m not real and if I were to get up and talk or even jump up and down and yell no one would see me because I’m not real or not really there or something or else I’ll feel that the situation I’m in isn’t real, that I’m just watching a recording on a giant slide projector. Now that I’m recovering from anxiety these spells still happen but more infrequently and when they do I now recognize them for what they are and even almost enjoy them; they’re just so weird! Anyone else??

I guess I'm just not sure what I need to do in order to contain the fear. Meditation/Mindfulness? Sleep? Carry on with daily functions? And how can one tell the difference between actual pain/ailment and anxiety symptoms? I was cleared by my cardiologist but when I exert myself, I get tightness in my chest. It's not crushing pain, just tightness. I'm assuming it's anxiety.
@anxietycentre
@anxietycentre Год назад
It sure sounds like stress-caused pain. It's a very common symptom. Approximately 81 percent of anxious and stressed people get chest tightness as a symptom. Containing worry, reducing stress, increasing rest, regular light to moderate exercise, avoiding stimulants, and patience can help resolve anxiety symptoms. I'd also encourage you to investigate therapy to identify and address your underlying factors. That makes stress reduction and management so much easier.

I honestly believe he should offer courses to therapist especially Social workers because they are not educated in how to address anxiety due to hyperstimulation which is entirely different from episodic anxiety. I have been in treatment for anxiety for over 30 years, and I am worse than I was when it all started. This is an atrocity!! If you went to a doctor for treatment and he made your illnesse worse it would be grounds for a suit case. Yes, I'm angry🤬 because I'm suffering, I have been experiencing horrific symptoms due to anxiety. Yet, I sought help instead of getting better I am worse!! Many, not all, therapist are lazy. They don't bother learning new techniques to treat their patients. They have no idea how to explain what is happening to us, nor do they have tools to provide us on how to help ourselves like Jim does! It's both sad and pathetic.

Thank you so much for your videos and website. Ive suffered GAD for over 15 years. I found your website several years back. I recently started having a heightened anxiety state with Covid and have not been able to come down from it. My latest symptom is lightheaded/dizziness/off balance, increased fear/worry/causing increase in health anxiety (thinking i have a brain tumor/cancer, MS etc). Reading your site does put my mind at ease that dizziness is a sign of anxiety. Then I worry again and my my goes way left thinking "maybe its really not anxiety and something is truly wrong". My doctor wants to put me on anxiety medication Lexapro but I've been resistant to that as well and afraid of side effects etc. Do people overcome these feelings without medication? How do you get through this without medication when its been going on for so long? Is anyone else in this situation or taking medication?
@anxietycentre
@anxietycentre 4 года назад
Yes, you can overcome the strong feelings of anxiety without medication. And, it doesn't matter how long you've been struggling with anxiety. We explain how you can do that in the Recovery Support area of our website. However, while self-help information is beneficial, it's best to work with an experienced anxiety disorder therapist, since each person will have unique underlying factors that create issue with anxiety. A therapist will help you identify those factors and help you work through them. Recovery is work, but it's work we can do.

Hi jim. I know chronic stress changes brain. What happens to brain when body has fully recovered? Will brain gets back in place and stops automatic worry about everything that comes in mind?
@anxietycentre
@anxietycentre 4 года назад
When we recover, the brain returns to normal. While hyperstimulation can aggravate worry, worry is caused by behavior: a way we've learned to cope with adversity, uncertainty, and risk. If a person wants to overcome issues with worry, behavioral change is required.

Many of our fears become subconscious automatic reactions. But even so, we can extinguish those fears when we know how. Working with an experienced therapist is the best way to identify the underlying factors that establish fears, and can provide you direction and support as you extinguish them. We explain this in more detail in the Recovery Support area of our website, as well as common barriers to extinguishing fears. Therefore, yes you can, and without medication. Getting professional help is the best way to do that. Self-help information can only go so far. With regard to Claire Weeke's material, it is good to get an understanding of anxiety and panic, but might not be that helpful with extinguishing fears, and especially long-help fears and fears that aren't about anxiety or its symptoms.

Okay, so what do folks do to get some relief to sorta continue living their life while this rages on. My most common symptoms (left ear tinnitus, entire body feels like it is freezing, persistent itchy / tingling feeling) are present every waking moment but half the time, they are absolutely unbearable. Is there anything that works in the meantime to even get a little bit of relief. In these moments, I dont feel anxious at all so meditation, light exercise, going outdoors etc dont work. I have also been on Anxiety center waitlist for 2 months
@anxietycentre
@anxietycentre Год назад
It's the cumulative effects of the natural strategies that helps overtime when the body is hyperstimulated and producing symptoms even though you don't feel anxious. If you are a Recovery Support member, you can learn why by reading the section "Hyperstimulation And Its Effects" in Chapter 14. Regarding a therapist wait list, yes, that has been an ongoing problem where all our recommended therapists are booked up. And many take summer holidays, which can make the waiting time longer. We are actively looking for more therapists, however, good therapists are difficult to find.

What to do if stopping medications made my symptoms much, much worse than before the meds. How do we recover from that? I went from having anxiety symptoms to neurological symptoms
@anxietycentre
@anxietycentre 6 месяцев назад
A lot will depend on the medication you took. However, dealing with your anxiety and hyperstimulation issues can make a significant difference. Most people experience symptoms after discontinuing a medication due to unresolved anxiety and hyperstimulation issues rather than something the medication did.
@Eliokd
@Eliokd 6 месяцев назад
@anxietycentre thanks for your reply. The symptoms of hyperstimulation were much less before meds than after meds, that's why I'm so confused. They were uncomfortable before, and now they are disabling. There are many websites and forums of people suffering from the same issues or having symptoms they didn't have before meds. Don't you believe the meds can cause harm? From antidepressants to benzos, they are calling it protracted withdrawal, symptoms that last months or years after stopping usage. Just want your opinion. Thanks again
@anxietycentre
@anxietycentre 6 месяцев назад
Some medications can cause lingering long-term effects, while others don't. Again, it depends on the medication. Unaddressed anxiety and hyperstimulation issues are the most common causes of long-term negative effects or uptick in symptoms after withdrawing. The withdrawing process can also contribute. As you can see, there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer, as there are many variables to consider. If you tell me the medication you were taking, for how long and dosage, the tapering schedule you used, and the work you did on your anxiety and hyperstimulation issues before you withdrew, I could be more specific.

@anxietycentre i took lexapro for a year and a half (20mg) and tappered of I believe in 6 or 7 months, i did have discomforts during and after the tapper and had a lot of previous sumptom come back but I kept pushing through. I believe 3 weeks after that, i discontinued a magnesium supplement i was taking for a year, maybe, and "all hell broke lose." My symptoms became extremely painful and severe (mostly neurological symptoms) for 24/7. I went back to the doctor who put me back on Lexapro which i stayed on for 7 months. It helped a bit the second time, but i wasn't well and still had a lot of disabling symptoms. My nervous system was all over the place, although i wasn't anxious and was pretty happy in my life. There is a lot that happened after this, experimenting with supplements and vitamins and whatnot, but i don't want the comment to be too long. Short story: My nervous system is still in pretty bad shape, and I've been practicing lots of acceptance and no fear but haven't seen much improvement. I don't know if this could be long-covid also, because everything happened at the same time, so it's hard to pinpoint what went wrong.

Yes Frank you're not alone. I too always having a hard time burping. You can feel like your stomach has like full of air or "acid" and then you can't burp that can cause panic attack too.

It can. It's a good idea to discuss it with your doctor to rule out a medical cause.

Hi ime on amityptelene it's helping the spasms and pain 50 percent with some side effects but my neurologist says amitrtelene or antidepressant cause dementia any information on this matter as this is causing me anxiety lol

Hi Sarah. Unfortunately, yes, your neurologist is correct. Antidepressants have been linked to increased risk of dementias. You can read about that research here: www.anxietycentre.com/anxiety/research/ssris-tied-to-increased-risk-of-dementias.shtml

Thankyou for that ime hoping to come off them in April as they have helped my pain but I don't want any other problems is six month long to do damage do you think
@anxietycentre
@anxietycentre 3 года назад
You're welcome! No, six months is likely not long enough. The dementia risk is generally only a concern when they are taken for many years.

Yes, it can. Anxiety activates the stress response, and the stress response dramatically affects the nervous system, which can cause neurological symptoms. For more information, you can visit our anxiety symptoms page: www.anxietycentre.com/anxiety-symptoms.shtml

Is hyperstimulation the same as central sensitisation they both produce same symptoms very confusing thankyou
@anxietycentre
@anxietycentre 2 года назад
Central sensitization is a symptom of hyperstimulation. In this case, hyperstimulation (chronic stress) is the cause of central sensitization - the hypersensitivity to stimuli.
