Watched this video quite a while ago and found it very helpful. Using the G9 tethered works great, but will of course drain the battery over time. UNLESS: you set "USB Power Supply" (in the "wrench" menu under USB Mode) to ON. Then you can as well shoot tethered as having your computer to provide electric power to the camera. Endless fun!

Hey Steven. Great to hear from you again. Yes, tethered shooting is super practical especially in the studio with high volume shooting such as products or portraits. I've used tethering a lot in the past with my Canon gear and Capture One Pro software. The Lumix tether stuff is fairly new. (It used to be a paid add on.) This is easy to set up and fun to play with. Cheers!

This is wonderful! This got me to the point where I now need to sort out my camera settings and what camera setting will enable the ideal tether options for digitizing old photos. Thanks so much! The value and impact that you provide goes way beyond just the comments received. BTW I used a USB female2male extender to get the G9 charging cable to reach to my laptop. Awesomeness! Thank you!
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 3 года назад
Hi Kelly. You can easily do a bunch of tests for exposure and WB to get it just right. I suggest 2 lights of equal strength and colour temperature, placed on each side about 45 degrees angle from your photos. Copy stand lighting is what it’s called. Maybe I should make a video about that. Lol. And thanks for the Great tip about the USB extender. Cheers and have a great week.

@@ImageMaven Thanks again! ...one step closer. Have you done a video on monitor calibration for photographers? I'm now realizing that, as I capture old photos with the G9, I will also need a well calibrated monitor for reviewing and enhancing the digital photos. Seem like the SpyderX has good reviews. Thoughts?
@ImageMaven

@@kellyjsanders86 I haven't done a video on that topic. I did write about it on my blog though: www.imagemaven.com/the-importance-of-monitor-calibration/ Here's more tutorial videos from X-Rite www.xrite.com/categories/calibration-profiling/i1display-pro It's a few years old but you'll get the theory. Also I'm sure they have more up-to-date tutorials. Yes, you can look at Spyder or iOne Display as well. I did use an iOne Display, back in the day. I don't really need them anymore as I've gotten used to how things look and I keep my photo "input" side very colour balanced. Huge topic. I could go on and on.....

Hi Gene, There is a new version of Lumix tether but I find the old version works fine for me. So don't upgrade until you check the specs. Streaming doesn't work on every platform, but if you're stuck for options you can use CamLink for streaming if your camera has an HDMI port. But using the Lumix Tether option is really nice when you're shooting studio portraits, or studio still lifes, as you can leave your camera set up and show your client the shots in a large size on your computer without having to transfer things to the computer separately. Dear Marlene: Excellent video again. I bought a G9 because of you. I need a longer cable for the tether, so can you tell me what size cable you used - it's usb to something - mini hdmi? - but I don't know what the other end name or size is. The stores are closed here or I could take the short one in and get a longer one, but I have to order lonline. Thanks.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 3 года назад
Hi John, Great to hear from you, especially about your reason for getting the G9. Easiest thing to do is get a USB female to male extension cable. That will attached to your OEM cable that came with your G9 (the one I show in the video). I would say at least 3 feet depending on what you're shooting. I'd get a 6ft. But not sure if the transfer will work with a super long cable. So don't cheap out on the quality. Look for Kelly Sanders comment below. That's what he did. Maybe he can give you a tip on his cable length. Hope that helps. Cheers!

@@johnballantrae001 I hear you! We are locked down in Calgary too. One of my UK subscribers got a 5m length for only £10 on amazon. So there should be lots of choices. Just make sure 6feet is long enough for what you want to do. You can tie a string or another cord on your camera and see how much you can move around with the 6 foot length. Stay safe!

Many thanks for that :-) A question that bothers me: how to physically connect (wire) 3 devices (G9 and other compatible Lumix) (the latest version of Lumix Tether would manage up to 12 devices) and be able to set and trigger them remotely simultaneously and/or at individually adjustable intervals (for example: trigger them one after the other with a delay of one second or less)? Anyone got any leads?

Owning an FZ10002, you are out of luck most of the time. This model is missing out from any possible "supported models" list. Sync app, usb tether, physical remote units - just to name just three off the top of my head. As if that camera weren't expensive enough to deserve some love ;)
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 2 года назад
Syncing is typically a studio photography task. The FZ1000 is more of an all around consumer camera. Panasonic even gave it a Mk2! Great zoom range! No extra lenses to cart around. I know several people who use one. There are features your camera and other consumer level cameras have that are not included in the Micro 4:3 or the full frame Lumix line. Enjoy!
@aram5642
@aram5642 2 года назад
@@ImageMaven As to syncing - I beg to differ, in that everyone has their own studio these days. As to the capabilities of FZ10002, you are absolutely right. And my choice of buying a bridge camera was conscious. Just got tired of carrying lenses around. And I appreciate its capabilities (thanks to many of your videos although recorded for a different camera). Yet with time I start to look around for some extensibility, external monitor, remote shutter, etc - and find out that I am in a different league :) Sorry about moaning and whining, this thought just strikes back every now and then ;-)

Hi Marlene, will you be updating to Luminar Neo? I know quite a few are a bit upset about yet another update and fee with this release so soon, I don’t blame them, must be a bit like Adobe on annual steroids to some. However, I find myself following your guidance yet again, why not, you’ve never let your subscribers down yet. Because i’ve never used Luminar I thought i’d give it a go and have ordered Neo, maybe as a plug-in so i’m not totally reliant on it for reasons above and cataloguing of images and just let it run alongside for several years. Neo will be updated of course as it’s based on a new engine so loads of scope for development. Anyway, I was wondering if we can look forward to some Neo guidance from you in future?

Hi Andrew, Thanks for asking. I feel that Skylum has the best tutorials out there for their own products. They are constantly putting out new ones. At this point. I'm pretty happy with my LR and Luminar AI combination. I don't retouch my photos, nor combine photos. And I have Photoshop if I need to close cut something for one of my RU-vid thumbnails. In fact, that's usually all I use PS for these days. As you know, NEO isn't exactly an update. It's a completely different software. It allows more advanced edits, layers, etc. People shouldn't be upset. Adobe has different products too: Photoshop Elements, and Photoshop CC and LR. So I'm not sure why the uproar. Let me know what you think of it! Maybe you can convince me to get it. Cheers!

Why not just use Panasonic image app with the remote control on a phone/tablet?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 2 года назад
That's an option for sure but when shooting with your high end cameras and lenses, it's nice to tether, especially for product photography and other studio work. I've been doing it for years with my Canon gear, and am happy the Lumix now has their own tether app so you no longer need to use 3rd party ones. Thanks for watching!

No but I only have one G9 to test. Double check that your USB menu on the camera is set to “tether”. If not, it won’t work.

Hmm, I'm not sure what to say. There is extra documentation on the Lumix Tether App page on the website. Link in video description. Also page 305 of the extended camera manual has some basic instructions. You may need to do a network reset for the Wifi connectivity issues. It only works in some apps with the Webcam and those have changed a bit with the updates. Lumix Tether and Lumix Webcam are now combined.

Ismael, you are not alone expressing this sorrow. I have a GX9 and G80 (G85 in North America) neither of which are supported by Panasonic. The official reason is that there are technical differences. I think this is corporate speak for us not caring about some of our customers. Even if a company says "no not possible" this can just be an excuse.

@@ImageMaven Two of the same lights, no windows, no fluorescent lights. My $80 Yicoe no-name lights are LED dimmable with different color temperature options. Come to think of it, maybe one was brighter than the other that day. Think I was trying to go for a 3-point lighting set up with one as a fill light dialed down. But I think I've used them both at full strength before and they still shift colors (is that the same as flicker?) Will have to look into CFL on them.
