In this video I show you how I trout fish my local streams mainly using a Rapala Ultralight Minnow. I really hope this video is informative and useful for anyone wanting to catch some trout on spinning tackle.

Rapala countdowns work like magic when you cast downstream and do a slow retrieval against the current.

I haven't really tried the countdowns for trout. I like the smaller profile of the ultralight minnows but I'll have to give the countdowns a shot and maybe change my mind

@geezersbassin2567 try the CD01 series and cast down a creek's "rapids"... rainbow will hit like brown and 9 times outta 10 they'll be jumping out the water. Can't recommend Rapala Countdowns enough.

The one thing I really appreciate from Anglers and others like yourself is the you show the hang ups we all go through unlike theses TV fishing shows . Good and bad times we all have when fishing. I enjoyed learning how to use the floater minnow thank you so much.

Polarized glasses are a must for fishing/wading through rivers and streams. You can see the fish, but more importantly you can really see where you’re walking so you’re not tripping over big rocks and hidden logs. I’ve fished without them and feel lost. One of the biggest must-haves for wade fishing!

I really enjoyed this, shows the ups and downs with fishing with rapalas in general. I've yet to have a rod break like that! The true struggle! Hopefully you bought 2 when you went out. I always seem to hook a tree or my own shirt when using a rapala haha, BUT always catch a fish on these lures. I always bring atleast 3 rapala floaters/UL minnows with me cause you just never know whats gonna happen. GOTTA LOVE IT. Good fishin!

Thanks! I usually keep one in the box in my pocket because a lot of them get left in trees and brush on the other side of the creeks I fish. But they do work so the cost of losing one is usually worth it.

Just picked up on this video. Live in Pa and fish Rappies very similar to your method. Nice setup. Late summer those brownies start to get the spawning urge and I fish the big cricks ( creeks) down stream , early am or pm and catch nice fish. Sometimes use a Floating rappie, sometimes a CD and sometimes a ultra light. Mostly 2"-4" brown trout color. At night I attack with 5" or larger. The night shift bite , at times is shocking to say the least. Great technique, nice equipment, you got it. Tight lines to you.

Also an UL rapala fishing die hard. I also love the little 4, 6, 8 x-raps. Same game. The x-raps come down stream a little nicer because of the tail resistance most likely. Love both lures. Almost to the point of obsession. The rainbow color and brownies are my two go to colors. Great little video. Thanks 🤘🏼🐵🤘🏼
@geezersbassin2567
@geezersbassin2567 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment. I also try the small x-raps sometimes but they are lighter so my rod and line is a little heavy so my casting distance suffers. They do get bit though. I probably jerk them too hard for their size because they blow out more often than the UL minnows for me. Good luck out there!

Great tips, covered all the good points. I don't know about you but I think rod length it important. I've been using a 6'6 and I'm finding it too long. I usually fish a 7'6 for salt water so I'm a big long rod fan (even have a 9ft UL).
@geezersbassin2567
@geezersbassin2567 Год назад
I like using a 6'6" most of the time to help with casting distance and hooksets. Sometimes I wish for a 9' rod to help reach out around snags and brush along the stream edge. I don't usually wish for a shorter rod unless I'm walking through a thick area along the stream.

Love Rapalas but at 7 bucks each I have been losing them like crazy. Decided to make myself a lure retriever with 3 giant dulled saltwater hooks and some 50lb Monofilament line. Hooked the iine to the hooks with a big swivel. Hook it on your line and slide down to your lure.

I was talking with an old timer at the local fishing lake and we talked about Rapalas. Great way to catch trout, but he as someone who said he fishes 100 days a year said the trout caught on a double treble hook have a very high mortality rate. Got me thinking, changed to two single clamp on hooks and have caught just as many fish and it’s way easier to release, also the second hook doesn’t end up in the gill or eye. Anyways just a suggestion to hopefully give the ones you release a better chance of survival.

If you catch and release always wet your hands before touching the trout. Trout are very delicate fish and they have a coat of slime on their body which protects them from a number of things including some deadly bacterial infections. Other than that great video. I love catching trout on rapala’s. Sucks when you lose a $10 lure though lol
@geezersbassin2567
@geezersbassin2567 4 года назад
I've tried to do a better job wetting my hands first. Sometimes fishing from the bank there isn't a way to get to the waters edge but I'm trying. Losing those Rapalas is never fun but you know it is going to happen when you fish rivers. Worth the cost though. Thanks for the comment.

@willaxy5314 5 лет назад
Does it matter what kind of line you use to catch trout?
@geezersbassin2567
@geezersbassin2567 5 лет назад
Not really, but in small, clear streams with light lures I would suggest using the lightest line that you feel comfortable with the risk of losing a big fish if you catch one. I personally use 5 lb, yes 5 lb, fluorocarbon made by Sunline. On bigger rivers throwing bigger Rapalas I often use 8 lb fluoro. 6 lb fluoro or mono is a good all around trout size line. If you feel comfortable with 2 lb, go for it. But if you go much heavier than 8 or 10 lb line with the little Rapalas you will start to struggle with casting and likely less fish catches.

I usually just cast across or downstream a little and then as I'm reeling in I'll throw in a couple quick and short jerks, reel a bit more, jerk, and repeat. If I can see a big rock or log I'll try to let it drift right to it and then jerk without reeling 5 or 6 times to try to get a trout to shoot out and strike. If nothing bites I may try that 3 or 4 times to be sure before moving on.

Nice video, casting your lure upstream and the lure swimming along the seam is natural for the fish and the fish will take it, the lure choice was a problem here, try throwing a small but streamlined metal lure such as a Kastmaster or a jig or a blade bait, instead of twitching jig the way to you , also crank-baits with large lips will sometimes hold their place ! The idea is to mimic a small baitfish that is struggling with the current and is getting blown away by the current from the head of the pool downwards.

If the streams are small I really like the Rapala Ultralight minnow size 6 in the brown trout pattern. Both the x-rap and Ultralight Minnow suspend which I like.
