Kari, I'm a Medical Examiner, Forensic Pathologist and a Licensed Funeral Director. To make you laugh a little bit, I'll tell you why below. I always wanted to be in Medicine from 6 or 7 years old.. When I was in High School, I fell in love and got into foreign languages. I had always wanted Medicine or Mortuary School, but in Undergraduate School, I decided on foreign languages. I obviously accelerated in my native Religious tongue, Latin & in my Native tongue, Italian. I also took on Non Dialect Italian, Latin, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Romanian, Flemish, Dutch, Luxembourgish, Greek & Russian. I then got interested in Ancient Greek & Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics & pronunciation. I loved it and I thought of being a language teacher or something with Linguistics until my paternal grandfather, Popa Gennaro said, "What about Medicine? I thought you wanted to be a Doctor or do Research in Medicine?" There went the Languages. I still loved Medicine and will until the day I die. Lol!! In the middle of my 2nd year, my maternal grandfather chimed in as well on my career choice too. See, I'm an only child, but not by choice. It's because my parents lost 4 children before me, then my younger brother, Michael died when I was 5 and he was 3 of Leukemia. My parents are lucky to have had me, although I made up for all the ones lost. Once, my dad had to take my Bicycles in for work, because I was pretty rough on them. When he brought the 3rd one into the store for repair in 24 hours, the shoppe owner said, "How many boys do you have, Mr. Giammarino?" Dad smiled with his usual smirk and said, "Oh, only one Charlie. Gennaro is an only child." Charlie looked, laughed and scratched his head, while dad walked out with ticket #3 from the Bicycle Shop!! Lol!! See, I lived with all four of my grandparents, my parents, my dad's maternal grandparents, one of dad's 7 sisters, mom's brother and 1 of his 3 brothers all my life, until I married. Anyway, my mom's dad decided to chime in as well in my 2nd year. Popa John said, "Go and become a Funeral Director as well, just in case it doesn't work out in your chosen profession. I did, even though I was a career Army Officer and when I retired from the Army that's what I did in the family business. It's an insurance policy. I went into Westpoint in 1913 and retired in 1950, just 3 months into Korea. Get it to fall back on. It will be worth it." How can one go against the 2 men who became my best friends. They were the best friends one can have from birth. They formed me into the man I am today. I couldn't and wouldn't dissapoint either. I went to Mortuary School as well and did both of my residencies together, one at Bellevue hospital & the other at Gutterman's, Inc , a Jewish funeral home. I got no rest. I worked 20 hour days, some days longer, but I did it. I'm proud and happy I did both. I managed to combine my extensive knowledge of Foreign Languages, Post Mortem Medicine, Forensic Pathology & Funeral Directing into one very interesting career as head of an Independent Medical Examiner Firm into Forensic Pathology advice and testimony and a Funeral Director's knowledge all into one. I'm actually happy with my choices and wouldn'thave traded them for all the money in the World. I did well and love my job. I have stories you would love to hear. I buried many famous people or relatives and friends of famous people. Anyway, I want you to know, you're wonderful and a credit to our Profession and to many out there who now can have Mortuary Science knowledge they always wanted, but were afraid to ask or see. God bless you, keep going with the great videos and email me at gennarojg3@gmail.com so I can get you to laugh a little bit at my crazy mishaps, stories and career. Sincerely, Dr. Gennaro G. Giammarino, III Medical Examiner Emeritvs Chairman Emeritvs Pathology Funeral Director Emeritvs C.H.A.S.S. of L.I., New York .

Interesting and informative as always Kari! Every case is different and will require an "Improvise, adapt & overcome" approach. Great example: the embalming report from the firm that handled FDR's preparation at Warm Springs, GA. Major issues encountered related to injection sites because of arterialsclerosis.

do you always use arteries, what about veins? or is arteries used as a catch-all term for any larger vessel?
@lrmgrl
@lrmgrl 3 года назад
Arteries are used to inject the fluid and the vein is used to drain out if I'm not mistaken. Two different things.
@KaritheMortician

Hi kari, I wondered if you could answer a question please? So, I’m re-watching the staircase AGAIN. Haha. They have to exhume a lady for the case. She’s been dead for 17 years. When they open her coffin, they say she’s as she was when she was embalmed. So, my question is, how long after death does embalming last? Surely, it doesn’t last for ever, or everyone that is “dug up” would look perfect still? Many thanks. X

Hi Kari, quick question. Overseas I have noticed crematory Chapels where the catafalque is actually an elevator lift that brings the casket up from the basement (where I assume the retorts are). That way you avoid wheeling around the caskets up in the chapel area where family/friends are and the only wheeling around happens behind the scenes downstairs. Have you seen any setup like that here in the states?
@KaritheMortician
@KaritheMortician 3 года назад
I actually have not. The crematories in our state at least don't have the chapels and such usually.
