I can narrate the video as they sell parts. The fuel pump is kept in fuel by bleeding off a tiny volume into a Venturi valve at the bottom of the tank, even when low or near empty. This keeps a steady stream of fuel under pressure to the injectors. We know this! Right? Well as miss fires create emissions and can damage the catalytic converter, US manufacturer asked a got a reduction in the sensitivity of misfire counts. This is your P0300. When components are changed that effect the PCM snap shot of power strokes, a relearn of the proper pulses produced as the crankshaft speeds up as it fires. The crank sensor provide this info. The Relearn can be found for your vehicle if crank sensor, crank, target wheel, PCM etc. But if low on fuel, it can smoosh to one side, leaving the pump to draw air. This reduces volume. Without volume, you can not create pressure and misfire occurs, CEL flashes once per second. In the tank, the pump is inside a bucket, sit on the bottom and has two filters. This adds size and parts. Thanks EPA! The small hose passes thru that Venturi and creates suction, drawing fuel into the bucket. This cools, lubricates the pump, providing a good fuel supply. Hoses submerged in fuel are special inside and out, so buy the right stuff. These are bottom referencing pumps and most, do not have a door on top to allow service. Too bad that is not a law! If a fuel pump fails at less than 100k miles, a pocket flat blade can push 3 tabs to allow the buckets removal. Inspect the inside bottom. If the filter is dark to black & a lot of debris, dust, dirt is inside, it came thru the larger filter on the bottom. This filter maybe rated at 140 microns and inside on the pumps inlet is say 80 microns. So dirt enters thru a tank vent valve, pass the activated carbon granules pushed by a spring to one end with a plastic vented plunger, covered with a fine screen. It can get into the tank as well as the gas station that may not sell a large amount of fuel (dirty tanks) lack of filter service either inside the pump or inline on the hose, next to the “Break-a-way” fitting as people drive away while the hose is still in the cars filler neck. Now, buy fuel from a high volume of fuel. Ask you tech to install a small engine paper filter on the fuel tank valve or glue a large foam on it if you drive on county roads with dust. These are commonly mounted behind the left rear wheel. Unfortunately, on this dust is in the tank, drain, remove tank, clean with really hot water and shake, shake and rock. Many don’t do it because it cost! Then install a factory pump and it fails in 25k miles. Why? Dirt & dust! It plugs things up, wears the pump motor or commentator plates & brushes. Use a scope on a fused jumper wire and look for inconsistencies in the wave form pattern. Most shops don’t have this lab scope or take the time, but it tells the health of the pump by seeing the waveform pattern, plus the amount of current it draws is telling. Too high, plugged filter or pinched line. Too low, brushes worn. What the correct amperage for a fuel pump? Well, take that fused jumper wire at the fuel pump relay, amp clamp and check it. If you do 100-300 or more, you will know! Also the check ball can’t seat (most have no spring, only gravity), so leakage and the line empties, extending cranking time even though it runs for two seconds at start. Dirt in pump, filter, injectors and pressure regulator (if serviceable) So, it is a dirty world, clean it up! Hot water dries quickly and the hole is big enough for arms & towels. Send it back under warranty, it get rejected and you pay. Besides, if dirt, dust is still in the tank, another pump will soon fail! Do it right. Fix the root cause, not the symptom! DK, ASE master tech since 78 Confirm the concern, locate the symptom and diagnose the root cause! Otherwise, start a list of excuses. Bad part, sun was in my eyes, I wasn’t feeling well that day, I lost my dog, ah, ah, ah, ah 💩 shit!

Imagine having a gas tank that has about a gallon or two gallons left in it at all times because the fuel pump can’t get fuel from it

Great animation. This brings a question. Why do people say that if you let it run down to E it sucks up the bottom Of the fuel that can contain dirt and other contaminants if it already sucks up the fuel from the bottom to begin with ?

First time hearing this but maybe because the dirt float on the fuel. So letting it run empty means the top fuel with the contaminates floating will be sucked up. But that's just a guess.

@@omgcheeter Most if not all pumps also get it's lubrication from the actual fuel. so, if you allow it to run dry it'll suck up air and ruin the pump.

Back in the day when tanks were made of steel and pumps weren't 'in-tank' this was often the case due to corrosion and other muck ending up in the tank - also lack of fuel filters could cause all manner of problems when you got to the last few drops. Guess the issue with running completely dry is that ordinarily all the dirt etc will be floating around in the fuel but as it gets lower and lower it will tend to be sucked towards the pump so best to avoid risking it...

Use ur head kid. Running the car on E often will eventually throw in the dirt and trash in there so the dirt is already inside it's only a matter of time before it gets clogged up

What is the purpose of the suction jet pump?

@praveengupta >The suction jet pump is a simple Venturi valve that uses a very small amount of fuel to push thru a small opening into a larger one. This generates speed increase, or a low pressure area on the bottom of the bucket. This draws fuel in to fill the bucket even when low. Fuel actually goes up the pump to cool it and lubricate it. But mainly it supply’s a good amount of fuel without air to pressurize to the injectors. With air in the bucket, volume drops, without volume then pressure drops, then the engine misfires. As it slows down, it does no match the saved “Waveform” in the PCM. This set the check engine light, since lean the catalytic converters gets hot, expands and allows it to break, turn sideways, block exhaust flow and gets expensive quick. The CEL blinks once per second when the cat is threatened. When a misfire happens, the crank sensor is connected to the PCM. It knows the position of the crank, but only the cam sensor, tells it which cylinder is ready to fire. So, between the two, crank sensor helps set a P0300 misfire. If it goes for enough time (Varies by vehicle) but the cam sensor helps it determine which cylinder. So, a P0306 means cylinder #6 is the misfire. The PCM captures all data and records it. On GM’s, it stores 5 fail records. Only the factory scan-tool can get all 5 to compare. Engine RPM, Gear, MPH, and 50-60 more engine data parameters, called PID’s. Unfortunately, not everyone is rich and go to a parts store and they take their $350 code reader; O2 sensor is the code! No! But hell no! They can’t or don’t look at the other info as the O2 sensor is fine, reporting a rich sensor reading. The fuel pressure regulator can be leaking, dripping fuel into the engine, the PCM leans out the A/F mixture out, then after a period of time, it sets a code. The fuel pressure regulator is bad, not the O2 sensor. But they are happy to sell one, or direct you to a shop that can change it. You pay, drive away and when conditions are right, enough time passes, the same light comes on! Mad!!! You bet. I work at dealers mostly, but would call customers to come in after work and I could show & tell them what I am seeing. Knowledge is power & people are not mechanics. But, I worked in back until they closed at 9PM. We are paid flat rate; a portion of warranty plus whoever adds time. So I never knew if I would make money one day to the next. My wife brought dinner so many times, I have lost count but lived 3/4 mile away. Plus I used my business cards and took notes each week and called customers on Saturday afternoon to ask if all was ok & if they had questions. My business card listed future things so they can save in advance before work was needed. Yes, I worked on many and all imports, but did everything. At the dealer, I was the Isuzu tech, but worked on Buicks many days. Customer have rights too. If you teach them your are honest, they returned! I have 4 kids that kept eating! If you water & feed regular they expect it and grow! Then they need bigger clothes. I am retired after 7 years of technical seminars by Raytheon, rep for ACDelco. It turn brutal as I spent 243 days per year in hotels as seminars for up to 100+ per night in a different town or city in 7 states. 2 day classes for 12 in 13 tech community colleges. It ended when I tore a rotator cuff in Dubuque, IA. and drove to Omaha, had surgery two weeks later then got a call, telling me my job was dissolved! Thanks! But it happens.
