Funny thing is that this new Defender looks more like a new Discovery after the actual Discovery 5 got the Nike shoe Range Rover treatment.

I know its new and expensive car, but I just watched an old, beat, Subaru Outback with no fancy tires, no lift, no fancy diffs or traction control, and a manual transmission do *way* WAY more difficult tracks than the Defender just did. A dang minivan could do that stuff.

For all their faults, they’re just epic (as is Jeep 😁) and you do the good ole, oil dribbling wagons proud. My dear dad always wanted a Defender but sadly passed before owning one. He passed that love on to me but whilst I’ve owned Land Rovers I’ve never owned a Defender. This is something I cannot pass on to my son and so one day, one day. Don't put your lr3 in offroad height with lift rods it kills articulation and standard height with lift rods will get over most obstacles. Only lift into max height when grounded.

In fact this is the first entirely new Defender since 1948.

The best test of a new Defender would be to drive it until it breaks and then see how hard it is to fix it.

6:10 you can change the air suspension height on the move as well as the terrain response. Can also shift into low range on the move if you follow the procedure in the owners manual.

My Land Rover LR3 is a tool that I use to do my job. It's a stock vehicle with the only exception being Nitto Grapplers. Tommy, you were not out of it's league on those trails. What I need to know, is in 100k more miles when my LR3 get tired. Will I be able to rely on a gently used 2020 Defender to get me where no one else can go?

Always watch and enjoy your videos but honestly this was a “terrible disappointment” to quote another automotive show host. Was thrilled to see the head to head of the capable LR3 to the new Defender...but a contrived race?? Was expecting a true comparison of the off-road capabilities like you did with the new v. Old Discovery and disco II v. LR3... So the outcome is the LR3 is better than the new Defender? Not sure what value this segment to brought to your channel or viewers...sorry

Discovery any day! The Discovery was designed to be the best all-round car in the world, you can more or less go anywhere, you can carry you're family to school, holiday or into a desert or muddy field. I think that Discovery generation is probably the best looking Land Rover vehicle be ever and Australians tow 7,700lb travel trailers with them into the outback. A fantastic car and if I could be afford to run one in no Ireland i would but the tax system here is shit!

One thing I loved about my old LR3 is how fast the air suspension raised the vehicle compared to other vehicles like the GL350 bluetec I replaced it with. Noght amd day difference. The benz took forever, the rover took about 5 seconds.

why would you do a race instead of going through the challenges like you normally would and really test the car?

I know, Disco has the tyres and all that, you had to be nice with the Defender, but kudos for actually getting them together because the comparison is bang on appropriate and what lots of people want to see (including us!). I hope, though, that in the future we'll see some more serious testing of the new Defender when you get a chance, and I know you will!

Had traded my 4Runner for a LR4 a while back and have had zero regrets or horror stories. TFL reviews are informative without being dull, and entertaining without being obnoxious. Well done!

Where's the difficult terrain? My old 03 Nissan Patrol would swallow this up easily, without half as much wheelspin and i wouldn't need to hit everything at a crawl. I could just drive.

You can option better tires from factory. Also, because it’s the bigger engine car, it’s brakes are bigger and more grabby. Smaller engine has smaller brakes which are more progressive. You can then also get 18” wheels from factory alongside the off-road tires. Make sure the optional diff is there too. This wasn’t a test for either vehicle though really. The trail is easy. I’ve driven tougher trails in a standard L322 Range Rover with ease. We need some proper tests, not just driving on a dirt road.

Great video chaps. I could never afford the £100k that a new Defender would cost - but I *did* manage to pick up one of the last Disco4s (LR4) last August with only 34k miles on the clock and looking like brand new. Very happy. 😃

I haven't known many unibodies that you can lift the body off of... just saying. The LR3 is not unibody, at all. It has a full frame.The body comes completely off it.

People go on about the Grenadier...it’s a phantom car right now. It’s not been tested at all and people believe it’ll be the “new defender”. Seriously! Zero dealer network, testing or backup exists. Please bring one to Africa when it’s available and let’s see how comfortable you are with it’s reliability. All cars...even the new Bronco will be full of electronics...it’s literally the air suspension on the new Defender that’s the biggest difference between some of the new “overlanders” available. So after my mini rant: buy a Toyota Land Cruiser (dialup internet) for your overland journey and travel with effort yet piece of mind...or.. Buy a new Defender/Bronco/Grenadier (5G/fibre) and enjoy comfort and not a lot of piece of mind.

Fun to watch but proves nothing. We had a ‘97 D90. I don’t see how all the silly technology is needed off road. You just need good ground clearance and maybe a few lockers. $80K for an off roader is absurd. Base models will be closer to $50, but still. I’ll stick with my old lifted F150 thanks.

There actually a 400lbs weight difference not 2000lbs (curb weight, with the disco being 400lbs heavier) And the better comparison is a UK disco and defender, the disco with a 2.7 tdv6 and a d250 or d200 defender as both have a closely similar horsepower

Proper off roader?, no you don't, what you have is a road vehicle, a proper offroader is a true 4x4 with limited electronic technology that's less likely to malfunction in severe weather conditions, if the new defender was that good don't you think that militaries around the world world be buying them in bulk?, they're not being used by militaries because of the electronics and suspension system being used, the original Defenders were proper offroaders thats why you'll see them in militaries around the world, jungles deserts and the most inhospitable places around the globe, the new defender is nothing more than a posers car to take the kids to school or to the supermarket to buy groceries. And What part of that track was offroad?, a family car could do that, personally I wouldn't trade my '94 110 300tdi for either of them. In fact I was pretty disappointed with the choice of track used. And the cheating by your father taking the easier route was pathetic. Sorry, but the new "Defender" is just a downmarket Range Rover. I sold Land Rovers, Range Rovers & Discoverys 30 years ago for a main dealer. Land Rovers/Defenders were originally rugged no frills utility vehicles which were bought by farmers and armies & other people that needed an all terrain vehicle. They could hose out the interior at the end of the day with no adverse effects. The same could be done with the original Range Rover. Can that be done with this vehicle? I'm afraid Land Rover have abandoned the original spirit of the Land Rover. I'm sure it's a very capable vehicle, but if people want this type of vehicle, they can buy a Discovery, to say that it's a replacement for a Defender is a complete farce, it's far too fancy.

Let's go left and right for me, reinventing the defender to this way is just absurd😠. There's a lot you're giving up like a fun, dirty and rugged offroading from the tough old boy. With new, you'll do it with your wallet calling your mind. Too expensive and fragile. Comfort comes with a price of basic practicality.

Since when was off roading associated with racing? The real Land Rover Defender conquered Africa. If you have been adventuring on real 4x4 trips packed with gear in real off road territory the video is a good laugh and the new Jaguar Defender a luxury pavement 4x4. Guess not many have had the privilege to drive a 90 2.8i or a Disco 3.9 V8 in remote areas? Put a 70L fridge into the back of the new defender, a roof tent on top and see where you go with the rest of the gear on a real trip, then have a break down in the bundus 700km away from the nearest dealer and see where it gets you! Just a thought from someone who enjoys proper 4x4 trips and likes to get home on time.

OK it's good on a dry trail & hauling a horsebox to the gymkhana. But the Defender that has gone was built for Soldiers (clue is in the name) and people to get to a worksite with tools & equipment. Squaddies, pipeline workers, quarry workers & foresters destroy vehicles.

As an LR4 owner, finally the comparo I wanted to see. Of course as an LR4 owner I also kinda already know what the new Defender will do, since it’s basically an LR5. Fun vid. Just another Capable SUV Not a Proper Defender Utility vehicle, they should have called it Pretender or Offender with LR reliability issues you would never dare take it on an expedition too much tech to go wrong.

I was saying recently TFL does better reviews than most because they actually take these vehicles off road. Guess I was wrong. It’s ok to put out fewer videos if they’re more thorough. Taking all the easy trails doesn’t much show what the Defender can do. Just don’t do it if it’s not a full review. All we got from this was a Landrover ad with lower production values.

They didnt even really test the new Rover. They basically drove it up a gravel road.... every "obstacle" they came across... they drove the new Rover around basically and had the old 06' Rover do it. Normally they do good videos. This was a fail and boring of "ohh you cut me off with that short cut"... "ohh look he didnt take the hard way".. yawn

Been saying this since I first saw the design for the defender, they completely messed up the front design. Looks nothing like the previous model. You need to keep a similar design when it comes to a classic and it seems everyone (ford bronco, Mercedes g wagon) knows this except land rover. Everything else is fine though about the new discovery is fine tho, only change I my make is to have bigger tires.

Americans may not know, but the Discovery or LR3 was like a Jeep Grand Cherokee, whereas the Defender was like the Wrangler. A pure offroad model as you can see with the old, yellow one at 1:59. This new Defender is quite disgusting to many people. Landrover no longer sells a tough offroad car. Landrover has abandoned its soul. The new Defender is a fine car, it just shouldn't be a Defender. It's a Discovery / LRX

Looks just like the Discovery only the lunch box is glued to the outside ! Not as good as the old one, not an icon and never will be ! As expected the new one took the easier route, LR have ruined an icon ! Great video as always guys, and i know you need adverts to fund these, but they really are annoying, just like McGovern being in charge of Design at LR.

What i would prefer to see is not a race but a test of traction between both like they used to on that one obstacle on Gold Mine Hill. I just remember its where they failed to get the Outback up it, although that could partly be the CVT's fault. But yeah put both Land Rovers in no traction, off camber, suspended wheels, from a stop try to get up the tough bits and see who does better. Maybe they're trying a new format that is more entertaining? Thats more what i would like to see, a better off road ability test than a race where your route has easier choices. If you have to race, a better way is to time each. That could tell us that one vehicle is more efficient at off road travel which is also important in the wilderness where all there is dirt roads and jeep trails. Range could also be a good test. Which Land Rover can travel the same route off road the furthest?

I think you guys have got it Spot On The New Defender seems a more natural replacement for the LR4 in size and shape than the LR5 is 🤔 Hopefully the New 90 version will be closer to an Old Defender Or maybe you’ll have to wait for Le Grenadier
