Moltres proved that just being a Legendary does not mean the run will be easy! Will Articuno continue that trend, or demonstrate how powerful Legendary Pokemon can be?
I love articuno because ice is my favorite type because i love the winter/cold and when i played fire red i already knew the birds and got them before the league because i was having problems with the rival and lorelai and the victory road and with the guard that said i needed to beat the psychic type gym
Dont think it wouldve changed that much. Fire is a really shitty type in Gen 1. Of course it wouldve been better than Fire Spin, but the Elite Four stil wouldve been awful.
The second half goes by deceptively fast. When he got to the champion battle he talked about hopefully being able to finish the video earlier than usual and I remembered how much was still left when he started the Elite 4 and was like "oh you poor soul, this video still has... oh it's at 40 minutes already, I guess he's actually done".
My favorite of the 3 birds design wise, was also the first legendary I managed to catch without relying on the master ball. I also really liked the ice beam animation in gen 1.
This brought me back to when I was a kid playing Pokémon blue for the first time. I didn’t know that rival six would block me from going to victory road, so I started heading there without healing after Giovanni. I was down to about five HP with my last Pokémon Articuno, and froze his Blastoise with my last PP of Ice Beam. I never felt as good as I did when Articuno pecked him to death These videos are fantastic, and I’ve really been appreciating them during my online school times. Let’s go Zapdos!
Danni Biz seriously, it’s not like loosing a battle in the new games even takes much of your money at all so whats the point of making sure the player is healed?
@@caritahearts2405 of you're like me, there is a point to healing because I hate losing (even if it doesn't have much of an impact, I just have too much pride to not go and restart if I lose a battle) and I hate having to use items. I am stubborn enough about stupid things to walk all the way back to a pokecenter even if I'm almost through a really long route instead of using an item. I also have to heal before a main battle, no matter whether I actually need it or not. It's why I could never do a speedrun of a pokemon game (or a lot of games actually).
Even if he got burned he wouldnt have died cuz you only take Burn/Poison damage after you attack in gen 1, not at the end of the turn, so he could still use Recover the next turn before taking any burn damage
Rick K that’s just how jrose is, and it’s the reason his videos are so good. If something feels too easy he’ll redo it just to make it more challenging
Lt. Surge is the biggest troll of a gym leader. He gets his own gym and decides he’s just gonna fill it with a bunch of trash cans just to make challengers sift through his trash and trolls you with fake switches. Like if this were real and you were a Pokémon trainer going for the elite four and you finally got to his gym after a long journey. You’ve done your research you know he’s got electric types and he’s a Lieutenant, sounds pretty intimidating. You’re expecting big powerful machinery maybe massive generators powered by Pokémon that power the city or electric laser cannons I mean you already helped Bill change from a Pokémon to a human using some sophisticated technology so your expectations are pretty high. How deflated would you be once you opened that gym door to just see rows of trash cans full of trash with Lt. Surge behind a glass door flicking you off telling you “dig through my trash you little bitch.” And every time you flip the wrong switches he just points and laughs in your face. Biggest Troll of the game.
Yeah when Gen II came out something was off about the Legendary Beasts... I mean they looked cool I guess but not as elegant as the Legendary Birds. By that I mean I can immediately conjure up in my mind exactly what Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres look like, their designs were simple enough to remember. The Gen II legendries had some idiosyncratic details to their design and I can't quite remember exactly what they look like.
Ahh, I remember my first randomized Nuzlocke too. I believe the first Pokemon I found was a Corphish, which was the only one I could catch in that area. I then immediately ran into a level 3 Kyogre in the same patch of grass.
I can't imagine Zapdos beats Articuno because it has no game against Rock/Ground types, which show up a lot, and Ice Beam is just such a good move to have at level 1. On the other hand, even with the Rock/Ground problem, Drill Peck and Thunderbolt are way better than Moltres's Fire Spin and Fly, so I think Zapdos will come out ahead. Given that the Rock/Ground types tend to have atrocious movesets with inaccurate moves, I wonder if Substitute/Toxic might be a good strategy. As strange as it sounds, Rival starter should be Squirtle. This gives him the most threatening Champion team, with Blizzard on Blastoise, no easy OHKO Gyarados, and the more threatening Exeggutor in the grass slot.
Zapdos might have a hard time against brock with only drill peck as its move. No way it succeeds with minimal battles and the time loss from that and later giovanni might be enough for it to lose against moltress as well
Rock/Ground types aren't really a threat in Red/Blue because of the awful movesets they have from trainers not using TMs, so they really can't hurt Zapdos much in return. Brock will be annoying because of Gen 1 early game restrictions, and that Hiker with the exploding Geodudes and Graveler might be a problem, but Giovanni, Bruno's Onix, and Blue's Rhyhorn/Rhydon won't be a problem at all, especially when for Giovanni's gym battle and the latter two you'll have Mimic by then. Outside that Zapdos is one of the most broken pokemon in Gen 1 and the rest of the trainers you fight are not equipped well to handle him, so Zapdos will smoke Moltres easily, and is only barred from minimum battles by the early Brock wall. And while Zapdos can't do minimum battles, it probably could beat the Elite 4 at a lower level than Articuno (and probably with less luck needed too).
Zapdos is high speed, OU (overused) tier. Drill Peck is going to be STAB (same type attack bonus) on top of critical hitting. I don't image the run will be hard at all. Also Exeggutor would get one shot
As long as Zapdos can beat Brock with minimum battles, the whole run is probably feasible with minimum battles. Drill peck is really strong, so Brock is probably possible.
33:43 Lorelei is one of the few trainers with all 3 ai modifications. Modification 2 makes her more likely to use a move that can heal on the second turn.
This. A lot of people attribute her using Rest only because it's a Psychic type move (which is misinterpreted as being "Super Effective" against Poisom and other types), which is true, but for some reason she is one of the very few Trainers to be told to almost always use an specific move on the 2nd turn. Technically, this makes her one of the few have all 4 Gen l AI Modifications (if you consider the "Special AI" a.k.a. Trainer Classes that use items a "modification", though I don't think that's the accurate term, so saying 3 is fine), given she both goes for "Super Effective" moves and has Super Potions that she might use when her Pokémon are in low health (doesn't always happen because it's decided by a RNG roll every turn). Fascinating.
@@ShinyTillDawn Loreleis ai had an extra modification in yellow. But in all of gen 1 trainers had 0-3 modification (if we don't count extra modifications, like using items in battle) that decided how they fight. Modification 1 caused the trainer not to use a move that can only inflict a status effect if the player Pokémon already had a status effect. Modification 2 caused the trainer to be more likely to use a move from a long list of moves (mainly including status moves) on the second turn. Modification 3 caused the trainer to prefer super effective moves over not super effective moves. If the number is lower, the priority is higher (for example: If the trainer has modification 1 and 3 (for example Agatha) and the player has a paralyzed poison type, the ai won't use hypnosis even if modification 3 tells it to, since modification 1 doesn't allow it). The only trainers with all 3 modifications are Pokémaniacs and Lorelei. And Lorelei is the only trainer with all 3 modifications who can use items in battle.
@@ShinyTillDawn Lorelei's Yellow change was very specific and only applied to her Dewgong: around 40% of her turns she will ignore type effectiveness, basically turning her "Good AI" (Modification 3) off. This was done because of the infamous Lorelei Softlock in Red and Blue. You might already know of it, if not, I suggest watching Pikasprey video about it. In a nutshell, you could enter an infinite loop if your Pokémon was weak to Psychic types, since Dewgong would always use Rest. If you locked yourself on a move (like Rage) that couldn't kill Dewgong while it was asleep, the battle would never end, since both of you would always use the same moves and never run out PP. But in Yellow, whenever Lorelei ignored type effectiveness, Dewgong had a chance of using any of it's moves: Rest, Aurora Beam, Bubblebeam or Take Down (though I'm not sure about each one's odds of being selected), breaking the cycle. Eventually someone would die.
@@Jrose11 it's always been a thrill to watch your videos because of your commentary. From Pokémon challenges to random battles with strangers, I'm always hooked on how well you articulate your thought process into pure, exciting entertainment. Great too learn another cool thing about which contributed to your brilliant channel, keep it up! Edit: grammar
@@Jrose11 I listen to your videos when I'm cleaning up after close at work, must second that your voiceover work is fantastic and I rarely need to visually check what happened, which generally happens because I wasn't paying attention 😅
Honestly the fact that you acknowledge your mistakes is what makes you such a great RU-vidr. It's always nice to hear what could have been done better. The Zapdos run is gonna be great :D
Haven't watched yet but I know it will be the perfect amount of action, humor, and romance I need before I fall asleep. Romance you ponder... Where is that in the challenge run? My love for you
I watched the Moltres episode and noticed your name was "Tres" -- watched this episode and noticed your name was "Uno." After all these years of Pokemon, I've just now noticed that the bird trio has "uno," "dos," and "tres" in their names 🤦
Jrose: Hey everyone how's it going? Me: Well actually it's going good and... Jrose: So in the last video... Me: ..... why am I responding to a person in a video?
I actually get a genuinely huge grin on my face while hearing your count impression. It's the silly little things like this that are one of the reasons your videos stand out
Ah, Gen 1 Flareon. It was actually pretty dang good in that Gen, as its base 110 Special had yet to be split the opposite way of Jolteon and Vaporeon, meaning it could dish out heavy damage with Fire moves, and its base 130 Attack could be used for powerful Normal moves such as Body Slam. I think using it would be a little unfair, as it was a powerful mixed attacker that wrecked a lot of things in Gen 1. But if you want to witness the total carnage it could only dole out in Gen 1, that's fine. Too many people fail to realize that Flareon _was_ a good Pokemon, but it got screwed over by the Special Split.
I remember Zapdos being one of the best in this specifically for the elite four but I didn't use it at a super low level so you might have a very difficult time overcoming the rock types of the game
Articuno was always best hidden bird ,solve puzzle and swim into obscure location and find bird sitting there. As child it was Amazing feeling. thats why i think of generation 2 as one of best where exploring reward you with something azmazing like lapras in cave etc
35:14 "Ice type pokemon can't be frozen." Isn't that only true for ice type moves in gen 1? I thought it was: pokemon can't be given a status effect from a move of the type the pokemon is. So electric types can't be paralyzed by electric moves. Ice types can't be frozen BY ICE TYPE MOVES. Theoretically, Tri-Attack could freeze an ice type right? Idk I may be wrong. I heard about that programming quirk from MDB but I haven't verified it anywhere.
If Twineedle can poison Steel types in Gen 2, I'm sure Tri-Attack can freeze an Ice type in Gen 1. Edit: It turns out it CAN freeze an Ice type, but it doesn't have secondary effects in Gen 1
Yes secondary status effects of a move don't trigger on Pokemon of same type (so body slam doesn't paralyze normals) but all freeze moves in gen 1 are Ice types.
That 1 HP moment. It's 1AM right now and I clapped my hand to my mouth to try and muffle my cringe-laugh. "HOOONOOOOOLOOOORDY. THAT WAS SO CLOSE. THIS IS GOING SO WELL. NONONONONO SIR, NO."
Nice vid! This series is getting me so hooked up. I like it when you talked about how not saving between battles at the E4 gives you that extra pressure to make things interesting. It's pretty much the best mentality when playing retro games, which I like a lot. There were so much fewer checkpoints in most retro games, and I've seen a lot of complaints about this point (which, to be fair, is a valid point. I think ti all depends on your mentality against those hurdles). For me, that pressure makes for a more interesting challenge, and gives you the incentive to learn the game to your best ability. Anyway, I'm loving your work and I'm looking forward for the next challenges!
The best thing about the jrose videos is that every video is 40-50 mins long so you start off thinking it'd be tedious but by the time it's over you don't realize you've seen all of it. Can't stop watching until it's over.
@@cubedmelons876 I kept a missingno in my party i believe and never experienced any corruption so it is possible since i had that save game for a while.
13:30 the reason you often outspeed the Pidgeot only after Koga is because it gives you the Speed badge boost, which is a 12.5% boost to your speed. Unlike what the gym leaders tell you, you get the badge boosts in the order of your stats: ATK from Brock, DEF from Surge, SPE from Koga, SPC from Blaine.
Welp, so much for you doing the second part of the trio with Zapdos after Moltres. Time to see how Articuno does, though! Hype & here's looking forward to Zapdos! Also, shoutouts to Articuno being just a great, beautifully designed Pokemon!
I gotta say, I always really appreciate how you analyze the luck you’re getting and how consistent things are. Being committed to resetting when you get too good of luck really makes the entries in this series much more able to be compared.
42:44 There's really only two options for ranking Articuno: Put it on the same tier as Mewtwo, or give it its own tier. It's only 25 mins slower than Mewtwo, and over an hour faster than Gastly, despite you making math errors, like using Bubblebeam over Ice Beam against Fire-types that were a range.
The Bubblebeam part is really funny cause I'm pretty sure it's mathematically impossible to do be better than Ice Beam when Ice Beam has STAB in gen 1. There are no, like, Ice/Fire Pokemon or something
Pretty great run, & a neat video! Thanks for uploading! 0:13 Oh hey, no level up off of the starter's Pokemon. That Legendary EXP Group.... 1:02 I doubt it matters, but when did Articuno get to Level 6? Off of the Bug Catcher(s), I guess? 2:34 Oof, that Peck failing to KO.... 3:39 Surprising you'd teach it so early. For Fire-types already? To save PP? 4:04 Nice crit! 6:10 Wow, terrible luck for Lieutenant Surge. 6:25 Wait, what? Redoing a battle you won? 8:10 Hooray! 8:33 Wow, Kangaskhan gets to use Rage, lives having it powered up... & Giovanni wastes the opportunity with a Guard Spec. Goshdarnit, Giovanni. 8:48 Did you mean to teach Fly to Articuno instead of Spearow? 9:13 Barely not a OHKO. Oof. 10:43 Pesky Pidgeot. 11:17 Wow, Disable disabled FLY after all those Ice Beams? 11:33 Wow, Rival #5/"Rival Fival" being pretty hard. 12:58 The complexion of this battle? 13:42 Nice crit! 13:56 Them Legendary stat gains.... 15:07 Wow, you taught Toxic already? 15:43 Dang, it lived! If you were to do Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, do you think you'd want to clump them in one video? Looking at their gen 1 stats, they have the advantage of starting with a move to trigger the Badge Boost Glitch. If I were to hazard a guess, I imagine that Hitmonlee does better early game due to starting with more accurate moves, Hitmonchan will probably catch up after SS anne and both start to use Body Slam religiously, and Hitmonchan will do better late game due to having Agility instead of Meditate as well as having better type coverage. Admittedly, my prediction could be off due to the type covering moves relying on Hitmonchan's abysmal special stat.
Design-wise Articuno is the most elegant and beautiful looking, it's simply put majestic. Zapdos has the better typing and competitive use and Moltres is underrated as it's pretty decent despite it's horrible typing
Really appreciate the channel. I’m honestly surprised you can put out out this kind of content so frequently and I really appreciate it. It feels like there are quite a few channels that get a ton of subscribers and then just post pointless short videos once a month or something, and just overall take the subscribers for granted. So I’m glad to see that you put in the time and effort to turn out these videos!
Honestly propably better. It has better special and more speed than any of them (except mewtwo), bulk does not matter all that much if you outspeed and kill everything plus it's a ghost and most npcs use normal moves
I'm glad you did Articuno. He has always been my favorite pokemon. Even if this video dropped at 4:30 for me in the morning I had to watch it right away.
I’m curious, how good would the move Curse be if it existed in gen 1? It raises attack and defense and lowers speed, thats three stat modifiers at once, so three agilities in terms of Badge boosting. Thats gotta be insane.
I'm pretty sure badge boost glitch only happens every instant a stat modification happens, the 3 stat changes of curse is considered 1 instant, it is can only activate BBG once
I commented a while back how I didn't like the intro because it came in loud and out of nowhere and you replied saying you had made it yourself which I guessed and appreciate, like the new one much more man, doesn't make me jump on auto pay with headphones, glad to see you are still cracking on with it making some progress
How good is Articuno in later gens though, I have a feeling that it gets weaker since it gains an additional weakness and two additional types that resist it
Much much weaker. The split of the Special stat meant its Sp.Attack went from 125 to 90. Ice got nerfed to oblivion as you say. Stealth Rock ruined it competitively. Still my favorite Legendary, and I hope Galarian Form makes it much better.
It's still pretty good in-game. Its stats are still solid and Ice is still a good attacking type. It does run into movepool issues, though if you can get a good Hidden Power, you get the TM pretty early in gens 2-4.
We fully expect Zapdos to be next, but if you're doing legendaries does that mean that you'll also be doing other non-evolving pokemon in this series? We kind of want to see Scyther vs Pinsir to see who's the best of the version exclusive big bugs.
Cool Wartab reference! I think watching these Pokemon challenges has gotten me into watching speedruns at GDQ and the like, so it's fun to see these runners being mentioned.
Can't wait for him to use Clefairy. I started playing Yellow again because nostalgia and this series. I just taught mine mega punch and it has become the powerhouse of my team. (Even though its attack stat isn't as good as its special and its pretty slow. It's HP does a pretty good job of making up for it.)
zapdos will be a drill(peck)... brock will be fun, im expecting to see giovanni to be a bit difficult and i want to see if bruno onix will do some work other than that... better than moltres rival starter should be venasaur. all starters are weak to zapdos stabs but venasaur is weak to zapdos worst offensive stat flying
Strangely I think Blastoise might be better. The Champion fight is usually the most important, and Blastoise has Blizzard there, whereas Venusaur's resisted STABs against Zapdos's 125 special are going to do nothing. Having Venusaur also means that the Rival has Gyarados, who is zero threat to Zapdos and doesn't have Exeggutor, which might be.
How about Charizard, for the sake of parity. Shared type on one end, neutral v SE on the other end, Fire Spin/Flamethrower could be an equalizer throughout the game all the way til the Champion battle. Also why not fight a baby dragon when you have a chance?
@@pandemoniousivy4651 yeah but venasaur has resistance to one type (electric) and is weak to the other. While the other are neutral to one (flyong). And i prefer fight a sort of dinosaur
Electrode, venusaur, pidgeot, gengar, articuno, GYARADOS, thats my team in lets go. Articuno is immune to status effects because of its special ability and a move.
I've been meaning to ask this, but what's the music that starts at 32:10? It sounds like it's from Colosseum or XD but it's a version I don't recognize.
@@kmytpmv314 Hey Guys, I would reaaaalllyyyyy appreciate having this song too! I love it eversince I heard it the first time in a Jrose video! I can't PM you unfortunately Kieran...
Jrose11, my man, I just gotta say that while I normally love your videos, watching you struggle through Lorelei has emphasized something I’ve thought about before. You’ve said many times that you prefer consistent strategies over luck, and you have also said you don’t like over leveling and sticking to minimum battles when possible. This was a good example where those ideas are in contrast. I think a few more levels would have been better than watching you fight dewgong for like 8 minutes.
