I'm a retired Vet. I run 14 Campaigns a Month. I dont get burn out even though I create all the worlds, NPCs, Monsters, Encounters, and Economies myself. To stop myself from burnout though, I do take vacation breaks every six months that last 2 or 3 weeks. I also Schedule the groups for specific days, at specific times and then and I keep to those schedules. If i dont, then that can cause burnout. Not each session HAS to be done all in one go. and not all campaigns have to be quick. Burnout sucks. and ive been DM'ing for 27 years, ive grown accustom on how to plan around burnout and keeping player attention while gaming.

"If you don't schedule time for maintenance, your equipment will schedule it for you." This is 100% true and such a great metaphor for avoiding burnout, and not just when it comes to TTRPGs! Your body will eventually demand that time from you one way or another. Gotta take that time to maintain your tools when you have the time, so that when the stress piles up and you need them the most, they won't let you down. =)

Honestly the part that I think is most important is the "Talk to your players." I personally love world building, and to be honest, I had gotten bored with the current world, and we were headed for the end of the campaign. I talked to my players and we said "Ok, then let's push the story toward an epic conclusion." And then we started talking about the next campaign. Which gave me an excuse to start building that world, and we pushed through and are almost done with the epic conclusion.

@jphendo
@jphendo Год назад
100% This is me. I get obsessed with a new creative project, so when my muse starts me thinking about the next setting/campaign, it can put the current campaign at risk. When I realized this was happening after 8 years in my primary homebrew, I TALKED to the players - which in my case are also old friends. We worked out a plan to accept more exposition for me to fast-track them through the last few scenarios, pausing my storytelling just for key RP or combat moments. The plan would have wrapped up the campaign with an epic 3-part (3 session) finale. Sadly, a certain pandemic hit right when this was meant to happen - and that particular table of friends was not interested in porting it all to remote TT. ... Pandemic aside though, you and Ginny Di are correct: talking it out with your fellow humans can lead to solutions.
@jamesm2577
@jamesm2577 Год назад
I think that "talk to your players" gets overused since 5e because it's so easy for players to feel like they don't need to listen or participate in that talk. For a lot of players they can just ignore it & say whatever they feel ends the immediate problem of that discussion the gm is trying to unjustly force them to participate in so they can go back to playing the game without any changes.
@bjorn00000
@bjorn00000 Год назад
I think two of the biggest pieces of advice is one that I took from Matt Colville... developing the lore of a totally new game world is often for the benefit of the GM and not for the players, and players will often work through your material a lot slower and differently than you think. Lore is often one big time sink for a lot of GMs, but what you can develop by improv or in collaboration with the players is often both more applicable to the characters and better than what you can come up with while working on your own. (Just make sure to take notes on that improv stuff for reference later!)
@Deliriumend
@Deliriumend Год назад
One thing to note is that one of the common criticisms of 5e (since this seems to be primarily a D&D 5e channel for things) is that it puts so much on the Dungeon Master for the game to run. You touched on a lot of those things here briefly. This can increase burn out a lot, and even some of the suggestions in "do less" can be exhausting and hard to do in a way that feels good for your game (finding and stealing encounters is MUCH harder for me, as an example, than making my own. But that is me, maybe not you). However, it is ok to ask your players to handle some of those things to make your life easier. Like Ginny said, have someone take over scheduling for the game. Have someone else be in charge of making sure people know how their abilities work, or in getting you the full text of a spell/ability if needed. Have someone track initiative. Have someone track damage taken by monsters (have them count UP if you don't want to give the full HP). Tell your player your struggling to come up with content for them and ask what they'd like for their story. If they say "Anything you come up with" remind them you just said you're struggling to come up with anything, so unless they give you ideas they need to be comfortable with nothing geared for their character coming up. While 5e doesn't do a great job telling you you can do these things, there is no reason your players can't help with running and generating all sorts of stuff for your game. Even world building. Point at the Rogue and go "Hey, tell us something your character has heard about this city" and riff off that as the core idea. Or keep going around the table asking for class related factors.
@chrisrobin4962
@chrisrobin4962 Год назад
You just gave me an idea. Next time my players visit a town I'll ask the players which characters have been in the town before and if they say yes i'll follow up with "what happened/what did you do?". Lets say someone tills a short story about them visiting a bar and was talking all night with a stranger. Then I'll let the roll a charisma check and see if that person got along with the player or worse, got offended in some way (if the check fails). Now they'll have a clpser connection to the place and might be on the lookout for the character they met last time.

One tip that helped get me back after burning out: get good at improv. I burnt out hard 4 years ago. Not just in D&D, but irl too. After lots of therapy and trial and error, I learnt to have confidence in myself to navigate tough situations and figure things out in the moment, instead of letting stress, shame, and guilt get the better of me. Improv is having the confidence to handle situations in the moment, and that's one of the biggest things I lacked. I'm finally back at it after years, and one thing that helped get me back on track was running modules instead of my own campaign. Following a book is less stress overall, and it made me feel like I couldn't screw it up. I'm currently running a Chronicles of Darkness game at my local game store, and I do almost NO prep at all. I maybe make one character sheet a week as my prep. That's it. I let the group create their own drama and 3/4s of our sessions is just them facing the consequences of their own actions. I make the world react to the things they do, and that gives them the power direct the story. I do have a main plot, but I always prioritize what the characters want to do first. Admittedly, this is way easier with a CofD game than D&D, but loosening the grip on what the players are "supposed" to do, and gitting gud at improv has helped me get back to GMing.
@josephrossow8901
@josephrossow8901 Год назад
My friend, I think you have learned THE secret of running a game. D&D is not a 'game' that needs to be run like you're some computer game, it's an 'alternate world' that you merely tell the players how their actions affect it. It's inherently improvisational and it sounds like you built the skill to handle it. Also, letting go of the idea that players are 'supposed' to do X, Y or Z is one of the biggest steps. Awesome to hear you got it figured out!

One of the leads went to an asylum and the party was *giddy* during the session about how cool and spooky it was going to be. So I printed off a free map I found online, googled a handful of scary monsters and cultists, found 2 or 3 traps I liked and reskinned them, and just improvised where all of the stuff was in the dungeon as they explored. They had a blast, and it took like 10 minutes to prep.

I would add that I think DnD 5e as a system and culture places a lot of pressure on the DM. The rules often leave holes big enough that you need to come up with something to fill them, but not so big that you can freely improvise on the fly. The encounter balance is wonky, and high level PCs are extremely difficult to challenge without lots of experience or time prepping. Players expect a lot, often both a well-written central narrative as well as backstory specific stuff for their characters (thanks Critical Roll). Other systems give you either more structure in the rules to fall back on, or are less crunchy and rules dependent, which means you can freely make rulings on the spot without breaking anything in the game.

It's true, although this vid is explicitly not referring to dungeons and dragons in specific at all. It's the creative process and being responsible for GMing any game, from Worlds of Darkness to, sure ya, even DnD 5e. I mean, some systems basically ARE, mechanically speaking, near identical to older DnD editions, which makes sense because they were a huge pieace the system's inspiration (pathfinder). What's being talked about can even apply to raiding in an MMO... Not identifying things that are beginning to feel "less fun" about what you're doing, not communicating well with your group about YOUR hopes and expectations, and letting your insecurities run away with themselves, among other things.

My group vacillates between Pathfinder 2e and things like Masks for this reason. If we want crunch, we'll go for crunch, if we want wild completely open theater of the mind, we'll go with that. 5e kinda wants to eat the cake and have it as well. You're right, and my number one complaint about the system is the tremendous onus placed on anyone who DMs.

Other systems are great! But I think your problem you are describing is just the pitfalls of playing a familiar and popular game. Players have more expectations for how DnD works and should feel. Communication and just bravely ignoring the stuff you don’t like helps imo
@trombonegamer14
@trombonegamer14 Год назад
@DOOMsword7 to a degree, yes. But also the system doesn't provide much scaffolding to meet those expectations, where other systems do. Pathfinder has a much more robust tactical combat simulation, plus much more interesting character customizing. PbtA games are much better at supporting character driven role play experiences. OSR games do dungeon crawl exploration games better. 5e is mid at everything.

Running a game is a task to be sure. Anything you can do that makes it easier or more enjoyable for yourself as DM will likely make it more enjoyable for your players. I'm currently running two campaigns, with multiple sidequests tied to backstories of the 5 PCs in each campaign. Sounds like a lot of work. Well, as a part of doing so, both are modules (and I used the same module for both groups) - significantly cuts down prep time of worldbuilding and encounters, so I can just balance and focus on PC backstory encounters. When I do homebrew stuff, I'm using many tips in this video like re-skinning content from 3rd party creators. (Na'Krasha's throwing a creature attack from "Bard Behind Bars" has made it's way into the campaign because I LOVE that!) And because it's the same campaign and players like to stick to a theme, there are some similar backgrounds, so a lot of maps and creatures get to be used in both campaigns. But a huge part is I have great players who it's easy to communicate with most of the time (so the times it isn't aren't so draining). Some of this may sound lazy or like it lacks creativity, but in the end, I'm running two campaigns for 10 total PCs and getting a lot of positive feedback on them. And the biggest reason probably boils down to something one of my Players told me early on. "I don't know if I'm fully vested in my character or this story yet, but I can tell you're having a lot of fun with this, and it makes it a fun campaign to play." BTW... that dude is totally invested now and is almost the main character of the campaign, so much so that he has to actively pull himself back and be like, "I feel like I'm talking too much. Uh... does someone else want to chime in?" :D

I can't emphasize enough how important it is to take breaks. In my in-person group, I split DM duties with another guy -- one of us will run a campaign anywhere from six months to a year, then the other one steps in and starts a new one. And whenever one of my campaigns reaches the end, I am SOOOO ready to just sit back and be a player again! Putting someone in the position of being "Forever DM" is just guaranteeing eventual burnout. (Your list of burnout symptoms at the beginning also fits exactly how I felt when I quit doing my webcomic. Unfortunately, that's a case where it's hard to off-load some of the work onto someone else, unless you're willing to pay them...)

My ongoing campaign (~3 years so far) is actually a series of nested campaigns with an expanding cast of characters. For me, this has been a big help against burnout. The "Main" party is still the one we started out with, but over time they accumulated lower level followers who could be played as characters in their own right, or affected changes in the setting that could provide the adventure seed for a totally new party of 1st level characters. I find that whenever we reach a satisfying end to one arc - or I'm just not sure yet what to prepare for the Main group next - this provides an interesting way to both keep the momentum going and experiment with something new for all of us. It keeps the spark going, so to speak. Last weekend we had our first "Crossover" where characters from two different parties were in the same place. Each of the players got to play two characters for that session. I was worried it would get overcomplicated, but everybody was actually pretty into it. (As a DM, I'm used to jumping between multiple characters all the time - so it turned out to flow pretty naturally when everyone else was doing this too.) I don't know if this would be a good game style for everybody, but it's worked really well for us so far.

I experienced really bad burnout very quickly when I was a novice DM at the beginning of covid. I convinced a group of beginners to do an online game so we could stay social. The issue is that someone suggested doing 2 sessions a week, I said no I can't handle that then 10 minutes later into discussing scheduling someone else suggested twice a week again and everyone else thought that was a great idea. The combination of twice a week and being inefficient with my prep since I was new took every ounce of energy I had

@VestigialLung

It’s hit hard and fast for me. The whole *gestures wildly in the direction of WotC* has really poisoned the well for me with this game. Before this happened, I was working on prepping an arc that’s the most ambitious and exciting thing I’ve done in gaming. I was energized and excited over the story we were going to tell together. With all of the revelations that came out in such a short time, I sat down to finish prepping the arc, and I genuinely thought about putting my tablet down and cleaning my kitchen instead b/c if I’m going to do unpleasant work, it should at least be useful work. I know logically that my home game doesn’t contribute to the problem, etc., but that doesn’t change the fact that I’ve got a lot of negative thoughts swirling around D&D right now, and nothing would make me happier than leaving the ampersand behind. I talked to my players, and we’re going to try to maintain the holiday one shots we run (and if I have to resort to modules to avoid killing the game, so be it), but we’re going to start exploring other systems as well. I had a setup for a test game of Fate pour out of me in a flurry of excitement recently, and I’ve been staring hard at Fabula Ultima recently. I suspect the problem is likely to self-resolve. If the best I’m able to offer in D&D is a “I tried, but I just can’t bring myself to put more than bare minimum effort into this”, and that’s contrasted against games in other systems where I’m excited and pouring my heart into them, I can’t imagine the D&D is going to wind up being the superior experience for my players. It feels a bit weird to be suffering hardcore DM burnout paired with GM/ST/whatever title other games use for that role euphoria, but I guess that’s where I’m at.
@VestigialLung
@VestigialLung Год назад
B/c our gaming setup is a bit weird, the holiday one shots I’m referring to are sort of a very loose, episodic campaign (common characters and world, games following the major sabbats on the wheel of the year, so that’s 8 games/yr). I level them between games, and we’d been hoping to take it to lvl 20, which means we’ve got 5 left before the characters get retired. I’m hoping that by then, I’ve gotten them to find enjoyment in some other system, and we can continue the tradition, just not with D&D. I can limp through 5 more games in the interest of completing that goal b/c I definitely want to *have* done that (even if I’m likely to dread prepping those 5 games; completionism and sunk cost are a hell of a drug).

Well, the well you've been going to just became solidly CC, so I hope the asinine corporate decisions that were attempting to get shoehorn into the hobby don't cause too many ppl to feel like the controversy itself really has anything to do with their own home game. Because it didn't before, and does even less now. And I'm glad you mentioned it because everyone should keep it in mind. There ARE allies and voices behind the scenes pushing back against shit that could have affected creators, allies which we have to thank for the leaks and warnings. So if it's a matter of just finding a way to properly separate some cynicism from what it has to do with what you found fun about playing the game, then I wish you the best luck finding a way through it! WoTC is a company made up of ppl, most of whom are passionate fans the same way I or you are. And yes, they have execs and bean counters, but the absolutely epic, historically stupid timing and thinking surrounding the OGL moves solidified entire arms of industries who have rights to DnD properties and dwarf Hasbro's leverage, like Paramount and etc that were also standing by seeing one epic disaster move after another start setting fire to their own hard work, (community and indie 3rd parties included). Cynicism aside, I'll be really surprised if they were to attempt anything this awful or brazen again. They could, but I think they might find themselves suddenly in lawsuits from so many directions claiming their actions were harming the value of everyone's investment in DnD... I don't know, but the CC move in the end was such a big move, SOMEONE with a little wisdom was able to get through to ppl trying to float all that garbage.

@@chipsalom given the sales boom Paizo saw, I imagine I’m not alone. PF is the opposite direction I’m going in terms of crunch, but while the vast majority seem to understand academically that their home game with products they’ve already bought doesn’t feed the beast (except for maybe in the vague many people play D&D not because they think it’s the best game but because everyone plays D&D, so they feel like they don’t have a choice if they want to find a group sense, where in continuing to play they’re contributing to normalizing D&D play as normal and borderline mandatory, but that’s not really something any one table can solve), WotC just threatened the entire TTRPG space, and them eventually backing down after virtually everyone rallied to the fight is a good thing, it’s left a lot of people with a lot of negative feelings associated with D&D. To be clear, for those who love D&D and were heartbroken at the thought that they might have to move on if things had played out differently, even if WotC had stuck to its guns, as long as you weren’t paying them, continuing to play the game harms no-one, and no-one should be judged for it. In me, it hit a person for whom D&D was the “fine, I guess” game in the TTRPG space. Having cut my teeth on 3.X, I had some nostalgia for D&D, and with 5e being a remarkably unambitious version (what if we gave them 3.5 back with some streamlining and some ideas we’re stealing from Pathfinder), I barely needed to read the books to run it, which was a plus, but in coming back, I realized that my tastes had shifted hard towards the rules light/narrative game realm, so on a purely selfish/personal level, this clusterfucktastrophe has given me the ammo I needed to push my group to try out games that might be a better fit for our table than D&D. I’m a more excited TTRPG player than I was this time last month by far, where having players whose disabilities made learning new things and adapting to change difficult meant that I was more-or-less stuck (family game, so ditching my table wasn’t an option), and D&D wasn’t bad enough to force action.

The current business model creates players who are passive consumers, rather than active collaborators. Seeing this new business model, this approach over the past 3 years makes more sense. Ginny Di This is, in my mind, one of your best videos! There comes a point with me, where I need to take a break. The well is dry, creatively speaking. Anyone who GM's realizes there is a toll to the role. Preparation, emoting during encounters, thinking on your feet, all drain energy. I use an analogy that works for creativity (also luck, but that's another topic). We start with a full well. As we continue to utilize the creative waters, as it were, the well lowers. Each day, we add a few drops of creativity to the well, but normally, it eventually dries up because we can use far more then we add, and this leads to the feelings you described so well (feelings of dread, avoiding preparation, encounters become curt and short rather then involved). When these signs begin to happen, I have to take a break, to give the opportunity to re-fill the creative well. It also allows someone else to GM, so they can realize and empathize with what a GM does. In the long run this is helpful as the new GM's tend to help you while you GM, keeping track of conditions etc. you may have forgotten as you are running a large encounter. The other good news is that I get a chance to play. I know when the well is becoming full again as my creativity starts to work again - i.e. while playing in another game, I start getting ideas for my campaign. Everyone is different, but for me I normally can go for 7 or 8 months, but then I need a break for a couple months to re-charge.

The "do less work" part is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO true. My campaign ended in part due to burnout, and in part due to interpersonal stuff, but since then, I've started to only run pre-written campaigns and OH MY GODS, I enjoy DMing so much more! I actually look forward to sessions! prep is exciting and easy! I also didn't like to use battlemats or combat minis, even in virtual tabletops, so I talked with my new group at the start of the campaign and we're having a blast with theater of the mind! It's been really cool!

"I hope his cat barf on his shoe" I'm using that line from now on. Also, I loved this video so much because I felt so related to it. In my party, we are a group of friends that been knowing each other for some time now and we've been playing D&D regularly every Sunday for like 3 years. One day I noticed that our "forever DM" started to show signs of burnout when he was cancelling sessions out of the blue, having trouble dealing with encounters, etc... I talked with him about me being DM for a new campaign so he could rest and play as a PC for a while. At first, he didn't want to because this guy loves DMing but at the end I convinced him. Now we are running two campaigns with the same group of friends, and even another friend wants to be a DM in the future. It was so good to see that solution here. Thank you for the video, Ginny.

Whenever I see videos like this, or posts on Reddit that are similar, I feel truly blessed for the group I have. When I have something come up on our normal game night, another player often fills in for a one-shot. When we finished the last campaign, before we got to the end I told them, "Hey guys. I'm going to need about 4 weeks to recover and start planning the next campaign" So one of my players ran a 5 week meat grinder type campaign, where the death count was high, and no homebrew was denied. A great contrast to what I run. I get consistent feedback, and lots of gratitude. The gratitude goes a long way to keeping me motivated. Disputes are handled as per our Session Zero document. Not that there are many of those. Having a procedure for this area of the game really takes the pressure off me as a GM when issues do arise. We are all adults, and nobody gets salty. Mental health is important in every aspect of life, but running any TTRPG takes on its own challenges in this regard. Thank you for this.

Great work covering all the bases. It’s also amazing insight for folks that aren’t burned out! +1 to farming out scheduling, hosting, food… letting someone else GM, board game night and hang time. And THANK YOU for using the term “gamemaster”/“GM”. Do I smell a sea change? 🙏 ☺️ 🧜‍♀️

I generally really dislike advertisement bits shoved in the middle of youtube videos, but that tea skit was hilarious. Nice job on that.

Sponsorship is the only reason that most youtube creators can afford to spend as much time, money, and effort on their videos as we do. I try to make them fun because they are absolutely necessary if people want free weekly videos from me.

@@GinnyDi That's fair. Again, yours are the most entertaining I've seen. You definitely make them fun. The effort you put in shows.

This is such an important topic that I rarely hear people talking about. I love being a DM, but the burnout is SO REAL sometimes. Thank you!

Amazing video and wonderful advice, thank you. I’m on month 18 of a 2 month break from DMing my group’s campaign. Every single point about the cause of burnout hit hard, including how external factors like work can influence it.

Burnout, serious stuff, yes yes yes- I need a full video of Harriet Highbrows teaparty! What are the stakes? What are the stats? Who is (and who isn't) in attendance? I must know more! This is absolute gold.

This is useful advice for GMing, and I appreciate it in that light. I feel like the list of symptoms at the beginning also explains how I feel at work, so now I need to analyze my burnout there.

Thanks for this video it really hit home. I normally GM for my kids and they have been asking when we will play again but between grad school and work I'm just not feeling it. This video made it easier to admit what I already knew, that I'm burnt out, now I can deal with it a little better and healthier.

Just for the pleasure to let a little spontaneous suggestion... If you feel that you approach exhaustion, fatigue or burn out, sure take care, but as an option, return the feeling in expressive ways towards your players... You lack details on what is to come ? ...People are not giving them valuable informations and they are lost. - Your lanscape is not all ready ? ... A thick fog arise around them... - You do not know which ennemy they will meet ? A strange creature is lost too and encounters them, not knowing also how to react to them... -They are going too fast to your next region or event ? ... A guide offers his services but leads them to an ambush in another way. - Even simpler, you feel exhausted this day ? An unexpected (if they never care about this) or strange fatigue (if surnatural) take them at their camp during the night... that lowers their capacities, menacing to be lethal if they not quit this hostile environnement or find a remedy soon enough... Just a way to say that you can express and use your feelings. ..

When you started talking about premade modules, I thought that was going to be your sponsor for this video. Glad it wasn't! Good on you for avoiding a conflict of interest.

Ginny, you're a gem as always. Hearing you put it into words in this video and your other vid linked at the end finally got me to suggest to my players a post-mortem chat about my game that ended abruptly last year. We played every 1-2 weeks for 4 hours once a week for maybe 2 years, and only stopped when I got burnout. They're a good bunch, and getting some proper feedback will only help me become a better DM for future games, plus enjoy the nostalgic chat about the parts of my games we all really enjoyed. I'm certainly one of many who can 110% relate to your feelings and experience of GM burnout.
