I've seen a lot of people who watched this movie for the first time nowadays say that it's full of cliches, what these people don't understand is that Halloween was the first to have these things, so nothing about it is cliche
@jamk2668
@jamk2668 Год назад
If something contains a high level of craftsmanship, it could never be cliche. This is why a director like Bresson could make films that had an incredibly simple/somewhat generic storyline and somehow have them still all hold up 50/60 years later. The issue with Halloween is that there's a severe lack of craftsmanship at times.

You are so right. I was 15 on opening night. While waiting to enter theater grown men were coming out telling us in line, do not see this movie, to turn around and go home...we all said, yeah right! But when Dr. Loomis looked over balcony and Michael was gone, I started to get up and leave. For months afterwards, a lot of people that had seen the movie had a hard time walking by a darkened room, getting into cars at night etc. It was truly an life altering movie.

Fun reaction! Before this movie, it was actually pretty much unheard-of to have a villain who *just keeps not dying no matter how many times he's stabbed or injured* - this movie kinda originated that trope. So the whole idea of "keep holding the weapon, and stab him a bunch more times to make sure he's really dead" didn't really enter the public mindset until after this movie came out. :)

@Corn_Pone_Flicks 11 месяцев назад
@@LA_HA There's also the simple fact that normal people who aren't psychopaths don't like killing people. A study done post-WWII showed that only about twenty percent of the soldiers had actually fired their weapons with a clear intent to hit the enemy, resulting in drastic changes to military training. People sitting comfortably in a theater or at home aren't scared the way the characters would be, and they all think they'd be Rambo in that situation. Very few would be.

@@Corn_Pone_Flicks Yes. Thank you. So many people get caught up with identifying with the protagonist that they Stop thinking as themselves -- regular, untrained, every day people -- and project as someone who won't freeze, panic, and make dumb mistakes. And it's not just kids thinking this way. The majority of people are so comfortable and unaware of how quickly things can and do go wrong, they honestly believe they will channel Sidney Prescott and basically do what she did. They do Not get it. Sidney Prescott is a smart character. But, she's also a Lucky character. Her treatment by Ghostface was always Very Different than the treatment given to the other characters because of the relationship between the two. Just as Laurie Strode was treated differently by Myers because his plans for her were very different than what he had planned for everyone else (except for Loomis). Her friends had Zero chance because he never showed himself to them, so they honestly believed that their other friends were pranking them. The entire town thought this was what was going on the whole movie. Even Sheriff Brackett thought the pranks were a bigger nuisance than Myers would be because that's what happened every year. So, his focus was on that. No one wants to believe they would be like the victims, not the heroes. We would Not know there's anything wrong because there wouldn't be any reason to believe we're being stalked and targeted. Linda, Annie, Bob, Casey, Steve, Tatum, and the others had No idea what was going on. Why would they? Why would We? How many of us have been looked at and didn't notice because we were in our own world? Most of us don't know what's going on around us because, like all the other victims, we're Also not paying attention. Our focus is narrow and limited because we're oblivious. So, yep, every comment section for Halloween 78/II, Scream, etc goes like this, with an insistence that "Sidney Prescott is better than Laurie Strode" because of factors that aren't equal to both characters though Sidney Prescott owes everything to Laurie Strode. Haha. Apologies for getting so into it. I'm a Halloween fan through and through, so I get salty when people talk smack about it. haha

Trivia: The movie the kids are watching just before Laurie gets chased by Michael Myers is The Thing from Another World from 1951. Four years after directing Halloween, John Carpenter would direct The Thing, a remake of the same film that the kids were watching on that TV.
@83shadow3

To be fair John Carpenter didn't really make a remake of The Thing from another World 1951. That movie was based on a story called Who Goes There. When John Carpenter made his version of The Thing John Carpenter went back to the. Source material that being the Story Who Goes There John Carpenter talks about it on the audio commentary an bonus features for his version of The Thing. He took nothing from The Thing from another World he only took things from the story Who Goes There. This comes from the Shout/ Scream Factory Collector's Edition of John Carpenter's The Thing.

"WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU!?!?" lol, it's because they aren't genre savvy! They live at the dawning of the slasher film era. By the time Scream comes along, the kids are hip to what's going on. I really like John Carpenter's Halloween. It feels like something that could actually happen and, despite the environment not holding up if you're REALLY scrutinizing it (they're in the wrong part of the U.S. at the wrong time of year, with the wrong trees), the vibe feels very authentically 'autumn in the late 70s.' It really is an example of what can happen when you have a restrictive budget: Sometimes it's the limitations put on us that brings out our best work. It's a very lean, clean, movie, right down to the spare, director-written, score. Best of all, there's no gore! You will never catch me watching The Thing, because disgusting things live on in my head, forever, as intrusive thoughts, but I watch Halloween, at least once a year, with an easy smile on my face. As a child of the 80s, who was born one autumn in the 70s, I LIVED for this time of year, because I loved candy, loved Halloween, and of course loved getting birthday presents. Despite the fact that I didn't see this movie until I was an adult, watching it takes me back to my favorite autumns of the 80s, and THAT will never get old. It's not even October yet, and I'm already one pumpkin pie into the holiday season so, in spite of everything going wrong in the world, I at least have that.

When I was 18, my parents went out one night and I stayed home to watch my little brother. He was sleeping in his room, I had the door of my room open, all lights were out, only my TV lighted the scene up a little. And at midnight, "Halloween" came up. And, at almost 19 years old, I almost shit my pants :D The score alone gives me chills after all these years - and I´m almost 40 by now...

Not enough people have seen it because it didn’t get a theatrical release back in 2007, but it does have a cult following and I finally got to see it in a theatre last year. Halloween (1978) is my all time favorite slasher/horror movie. It is brilliant in so many ways. The more you watch it the more you see all the psychology laced in the writing and scenes. It is a thinking person's horror film. Also we fill in alot of the blanks in our minds which adds to the terror we feel while watching this film. What always made this so scary to me as a kid watching was this seemed possible and the older I got and the more I learned about certain psychological and mental disorders the more I realized that there are mental conditions were the patient doesn't have empathy or emotions or even feel pain. Some patients can exhibit great strength too. The suburbs at night can also be a creepy place. My favorite's of this franchise are Halloween 2 (1981) and Halloween 4 (1988) these are the only films I consider canon to the first film. Michael always seemed the most intelligent of all the slashers to me and that made him more threatening. I would love it if you watched part 2 and 4. Great reaction Natalie. I loved it.

The 1970s has some very high highs and has some of the most iconic horror movies, But I think really only about 20 truly stand-out. The 1980s is superior by sheer number imo and even many of the bad horror movies of that decade are fun. 2014-current has had an impressive turnout as well, though many of the good ones many people haven't heard of because they are under the radar. I think the term for many of the modern horror movies is "elevated horror" with stuff like Hereditary. The '90s and 2000s had good horror movies as well, but I think that 20 years was the lowest point for horror since the 1960s. The 1960s obviously had some good and great horror movies too though, starting the decade off with one of the greatest horror movies ever made - Psycho.

Fun Fact: Michael Myers was played by five different people throughout the movie (not counting the stuntman who doubles for Michael falling from the bedroom window). For the majority of the film, Michael is played by Nick Castle, a close friend of director John Carpenter who went on to become a director of films like The Last Starfighter and The Boy Who Could Fly. Six year old Michael Myers in 1963 is played by Will Sandin. In the scene at the end where Michael Myers is unmasked, he is portrayed by Tony Moran, who was the younger brother of Happy Days actress Erin Moran. Halloween producer and co-screenwriter Debra Hill played Michael's hands in the scene where six year old Michael takes the knife from the kitchen drawer in 1963, and the silhouette of Michael outside of the Wallace house seen by Tommy Doyle through his window. Film editor and assistant director Tommy Lee Wallace played Michael during the scene where Michael smashes through the closet door to get at Laurie, since Wallace was the one who rigged that scene and knew best how to carry out the door-smashing.

It manages to be scary but funny, gory but lighthearted, fresh and yet delivering on all the right tropes. My Halloween season playlist is: Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, The ORIGINAL Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead, Trick r' Treat, and Cabin in the Woods. Other stuff makes it in there too, but I MAKE SURE to watch all yhose in October.

Half the tiny budget went on the massive widescreen cameras which became a Carpenter trademark. These shots give the low budget movie much needed gravitas and makes the darkness enveloping each scene seem alive. Annie also appears in Carpenter's excellent spooky ghost story The Fog along with Jamie Lee and Jamie's mum Janet Lee. Lindsey is watching The Thing From Another World which Carpenter went on to remake.

Loved the fact that the music creeped you out so much. This movie was so low budget that the stars wore their own clothes, the fake fall leaves were used over and over, the mask was a captain kirk mask painted white, and they had to make up their own music by playing chords on the piano that sounded creepy together. Also there's not much blood at all. Although it's one of the first slasher films, imo it's one of the best(if not the best) because of the budget forced simplicity.

I saw this film in the theater opening week, and countless times since. And the first "Halloween" is unique. All of the subsequent movies were essentially just cash grabs, based on the tremendous profits of the original film (as was Friday the 13th). They fixated on killing teenagers in graphic ways and missed the whole point of the original. This film is all suspense and no blood, and. I'd argue, not even reality-based. It has the structure of a nightmare. There are so many unreal events: The 60 second sex, the lack of blood when people are stabbed, the fact that "The Shape" is always there first no matter how slowly he walks, the unreality of the terrain (notice that the house interiors don't correspond to their exteriors - sometimes the living room is to the right of the entrance, when there is no house to the right of the entrance on the outside, windows don't match, etc. I don't know why he did it, but Carpenter intentionally used the interior of one house and the exterior of the house across the street, swapping the interiors and exteriors of three adjacent houses). Also, I think The Shape is only after Laurie and her friends because she went to his house, that's all. And he can't seem to kill her because he doesn't want to: It's more fun to screw with her. That's why he arranged the tableau in the bedroom and wears the sheet and glasses. It's more fun. That's why he always misses when he goes after her with the knife and pretends to be dead. It's more fun that way. And, I would argue, the most important scene in the film is when Laurie pulls his mask off and we see . . .nothing. It's just a guy. There's nothing horrifying about him. He doesn't look like a monster. Because Evil hides. It looks just like everybody else. And that's where the horror lies. That's the real moral of this nightmare. Always be on guard. Because sometimes the Boogeyman is real, and he looks just like everybody else.

Fun fact: The first scene where Michael kills his sister was the last part of the movie they shot, and it was done almost in a single take. And the set was absolutely full of crew members who were scrambling to get out of the way of the camera at every turn. But they realized they couldn't complete it in one shot because the camera didn't have a long enough film. The bit where Michael reaches down to pick up the clown mask is where they hide the cut. I'm actually a bit proponent of the interpretation that Annie, not Laurie, was Michael's intended target. He came back to Haddonfield to find a surrogate victim to stand in for his sister, and Annie fits that far more than Laurie. Although he does briefly follow Laurie, he also follows Tommy, but doesn't show any real interest in them after those first few hours. On Halloween night, he doesn't even LOOK at Laurie. He goes straight after Annie and he sticks to her like glue all night. He shows no interest in anyone else until they come to the house and disturb him after he's used Annie's corpse to setup a shrine to his sister. If he gave a damn about Laurie, he had hours to go over there and start stalking her. But he completely ignored her until she came to investigate the house (Something he had no way to predict she'd do). And even when he does come after her, it's all business. Laurie is the one he stalks all night, watching her, replicating the experience he had with his sister. With Laurie, he just tries to corner her in the house and, when that fails, he chases after he and tries to kill her within minutes of encountering her. Of course, the sequels came along and a convoluted storyline had to be developed to explain why Michael keeps coming after Laurie. But, if viewed as a standalone and/or in conjunction with the reboot, Annie was Michael's selected target. He didn't care about Laurie after his initial curiosity was sated. Despite following her for a while, he didn't take any overtly aggressive action at all until after Annie shouted at him.

This movie is so simplistic and effective with its atmosphere, the feeling of the darkness at night and what could be lurking in it, the constant use of breathing to make Michael feel like a constant inhuman threat, a presence lurking in that darkness. That ending is so haunting with it cutting around the locations and the breathing, you’re searching for him too. It’s a consistently creepy and unnerving atmosphere. And to think this film was shot and made for comparatively little, about 300 thousand in 1978 dollars, and it grossed 70 million, which for a very independent film, made it one of the most profitable indie films ever. Gorgeous lit and gorgeously…ingeniously shot and helmed, I can forgive all the cliches, especially considering at the time they weren’t, this film and others in the genre established many of them!

What I love about this movie is what it has to say... Michael Myers follows Laurie and her friends, and they shrug it off. He's at the school, and no one cares. He's watching the Doctor, and no one notices. A monster can look like anyone-- Blend into a crowd, and you wouldn't know what they were, until it was too late. You may have stood next to a monster in line at the grocery store, or in a crowd at a concert, or even answered the door for one on Halloween. I read this, funny enough, in a comic book once, and it's stuck with me for life. To paraphrase, "... Evil is the thought behind a face, and it could look just the same as yours." However... As bad as, if not worse than, a monster, are the inactions of those around them. Doctors that were warned of Michael Myers, and did nothing. Laurie screamed for help the one night of the year people are all but guaranteed to be home, and they turned out their lights and did nothing. In essence, their inaction is just as deadly as the actions of Michael Myers, himself. They might as well be tried as accomplices. To paraphrase, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is for the good to do nothing.”

Michael Meyers, master of the DILLIGAF vibe. The 4 cornerstones of the horror slasher genre that laid a foundation on which everything else was built.... 1. Psycho 2. Halloween 3. Friday the 13th 4. Texas chainsaw massacre. Every trope that is originated here with these works. Fun Tip: The original halloween is basically a short story. The rob zombie remake is a full novel.

Fun Fact: In the 60's, the makers of Star Trek made a bust of William Shatner's face out of clay so he didn't have to be on hand for the prosthetics they would need to make for Cpt. Kirk. Somewhere along the line, someone got a hold of the bust and made a mask of it for Halloween (the holiday). Then in 1978 the makers of "Halloween" (the film) got a hold of one and painted it white for Michael Myers.

They did a good job getting an "autumn in a Midwest state" vibe considering they shot the whole movie in Southern California and had to use fake leaves, which they gathered up when they were done with each scene so they could use them again. Also, because I'm not seeing the usual "Did you know?" comments, the Michael Myers mask was a William Shatner mask turned inside out, the scene where the kid stands there holding the knife with the parents and no one is saying anything (which is kinda creepy) is because they forgot to give them lines to say while the camera was pulling back, and the reason there are so many long shots of people walking is because they needed to reach the contractual obligation for runtime to be shown on TV (which ended up giving the movie a POV stalker effect).

This movie made a bunch of the tropes people consider to be cliche. Definitely not perfect, but it is so effective. What a classic. The 2018 one was well worth seeing, and I kinda liked H20 (although 2018 completely ignores everything except the original). Other spooky movies I would highly recommend are The Shining, Scream (honestly it's the one horror series with the most great entries imo, 1, 2, and 4 are excellent, though I can't speak for the two newest ones), Poltergeist, The Witch, The Lighthouse, A Nightmare on Elm Street, the original 1968 Night of the Living Dead (created zombies as we understand them today), 28 Days Later, Psycho, It Follows, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Carnival of Souls, The Exorcist (I don't personally love it, but it's a solid movie, though this one might be anotuer one that messes you up, so maybe not), The Blair Witch Project, and the Evil Dead movies.

A lot of horror movies from this time were stand-alone indie films that were turned into franchises by the Studios because of how profitable they were. And because sequels were literally just cash-ins to churn out until they lost money, there was very little focus on continuity (NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET was the only series to seriously try mythology). Since HALLOWEEN was so popular, it's been rebooted and requeled so many times that the timeline gets...weird. So here's a map: *NOTE:* HALLOWEEN is the starting point for all other sequels *The Thorn Timeline (1978-1995)* HALLOWEEN 1, 2, 4, 5, 6: CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS (CURSE has 2 versions; the Producer's Cut makes more sense) *The Williamson Timeline (1978, 1998-2002)* HALLOWEEN HALLOWEEN H20 HALLOWEEN RESURRECTION *The Green Trilogy (1978, 2018-2022)* HALLOWEEN HALLOWEEN (2018) HALLOWEEN KILLS HALLOWEEN ENDS * HALLOWEEN III is it's own thing--No Michael Myers. They tried something different & it didn't work out. * Rob Zombie did a 2-part reboot in the '00s called HALLOWEEN & HALLOWEEN II. They are self-contained films with no connection to the original series. I prefer the Thorn Timeline even though it doesn't fully resolve. You can stop after HALLOWEEN II if you'd like since the other sequels require studious focus and evaluation. The Green Trilogy is pretty good but ENDS is an extremely controversial entry that most people hate with a fiery passion.

Fortunately (or not?) you weren't 11 years old when you saw this in a dark theater so it didn't give you the full effect. I can tell when you watch a movie you are de-constructing movies to see how it was directed, etc. There are good documentaries made about this movie. It was a cultural event at the time it was released and it held the record for most profitable independent movie ever made. It will also talk about the incredibly small budget and how they got the actors in their roles. This was the movie that made John Carpenter famous and deserves a deep dive for any fan of film, especially horror film. This period was a golden age of horror when masters of the genre were just getting started. The Last House on the Left, The Hills Have Eyes, I Spit On Your Grave, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and more. I remember as a kid they would advertise on the radio that these movies were banned in 10 countries to make you want to see them even more. Just so much fun being a kid in the 70's.

Natalie just so that you know... There are multiple timelines/universes in the Halloween Franchise and watching the films for the first time is confusing as they contradict themselves as a film series. Timeline 1. Halloween (1978), Halloween 2 (1981), Halloween 4 The Return Of Michael Myres (1988), Halloween 5 The Revenge Of Michael Myres (1989) & Halloween 6 The Curse Of Michael Myres (1995). Timeline 2. Halloween (1978), Halloween 2 (1981), Halloween H20 Twenty Years Later (1998) & Halloween Resurrection (2002). Timeline 3. Halloween (1978), Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021) & Halloween Ends (2022). Timeline 4. Halloween (2007) & Halloween 2 (2009). Rob Zombie directed reimaging/remake. Timeline 5. Halloween 3 Season Of The Witch (1982). The only Halloween film to date that does not have Michael Myres and is set in a world where the original Halloween (1978) film is just a horror movie as it is playing on the T.V. in one of the scenes and it is obvious that it is just a movie on T.V. and it is also the worst Halloween film that has been made to date. Jamie Lee Curtis is in... Halloween (1978). Halloween 2 (1981). Halloween H20 Twenty Years Later (1998). Halloween Resurrection (2002). Halloween (2018). Halloween Kills (2021). Halloween Ends (2022). Jamie Lee Curtis is not in... Halloween 3 Season Of The Witch (1982). A standalone story not connected to any other film in the franchise. Halloween 4 The Return Of Michael Myres(1988). Halloween 5 The Revenge Of Michael Myres (1989). Halloween 6 The Curse Of Michael Myres (1995). These last 3 films are known as "The Thorn Trilogy" and follow Michael's attempts to kill the daughter of Jamie Lee Curtis's character Laurie Strode who in this timeline was killed off in a car accident between films. Also Halloween 6 The Curse Of Michael Myres has Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) playing an adult Tommy the boy that Laurie was babysitting in Halloween (1978). Rob Zombie directed reimaging/remake Halloween (2007) & Halloween 2 (2009) uses the Laurie Strode character with a different actress. Jamie Lee Curtis returned to the Halloween series in Halloween H20 Twenty Years Later (1998) as Laurie Strode with a teenage son played by Josh Hartnett and although it said in the film that Laurie faked her death and went into hiding after Halloween 2 (1981) there was no mention of having a daughter so Halloween 4, 5 6 did not take place in this timeline. Jamie Lee Curtis only agreed to be in Halloween Resurrection (2002) if they killed off her character on screen as the opening shocker so she is not in the movie for long and there is not mention of the teenage son that she had in the previous film. Jamie Lee Curtis returned once again for the latest trilogy Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021) & Halloween Ends (2022) and these follow on from the original Halloween (1978) and even though at the end of that film after falling over the balcony and disappearing it is said in Halloween (2018) that Michael was caught he did not get far and has been back in custody in the asylum for 40 years before escaping again for the events in Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021) & Halloween Ends (2022).
