That reminds me of the Tale of Two Wolves - An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

It's such small but material shift. I am sure we all know optimism is contagious and spreads but to look at it as a learnable trait feels especially powerful.

I've learned to always qualify with "I'm CAUTIOUSLY optimistic" when I present project proposals/action plans to my managers. Too often people equate optimism with a lack of realism, but it's amazing how that one extra adverb changes people's opinions so drastically.

My personal mantra is that if all good things must come to an end, you should treat every moment as a good one because until the end of that particular moment, you may not know if it was a good one or not. For example, a lot of people look back at their school days wishing they were there again, but in the present moment you probably hated school.

This makes me think of needy people and “yes men” … they think having positive interaction with people means always agreeing and never facing confrontations. Smart people stand up for what they believe but they also know when to listen and admit when they’re wrong. They talk to get to the correct conclusion with others rather than just proving/forcing their point.

So that explains what Trump was doing on playing down covid. He was projecting blind positivity, not optimism.
@mrshmuga9
@mrshmuga9 3 года назад
He didn’t want to start a mass panic because that’s about the dumbest thing you can do with a new disease. Especially when you’re not too sure if or how dangerous it is. Also, go complain to the Democrats that said COVID wasn’t a problem back when people were talking about it in December/January and that you were racist if you wanted to temporarily shut the borders. Only for them to demand shutting the borders after it already became global pandemic.
@holdupwaitaminute.
@holdupwaitaminute. 3 года назад
@@mrshmuga9 A true leader inspires, not divides the people. If Trump was a true leader, he would've told the truth in an inspiring way and gave the people something to believe in, not blaming or lying. Yes, no one wants to cause a panic. But blind positivity isn't helping as well. Just look at how the people react when they found out that Trump was lying about covid. It's not about The Republicans or The Democrats. If he inspired the people since the beginning, the people would've been a unity. But he didn't. He made the country look like the DSA (Divided States of America), not the USA. I recommend you watch how other countries look at America right now. And if you still don't get it, I suggest you go and get THERAPY.
@mrshmuga9
@mrshmuga9 3 года назад
@@holdupwaitaminute. Hah, of course you dodge that the Democrats were against him because that would be inconvenient. And it IS relevant because you just said you should make decisions based on how other people/countries will see you. Well during the early days he was being called a racist and xenophobe by Democrats for wanting to shut the borders in January because he saw it as a possible threat. Then when it became a global problem THEN they gave in and pulled a complete 180. Their response was irresponsible. They were being reactive (wait until it's a problem to act) rather than proactive (try to prevent it from becoming a problem). If he made decisions based on how other countries saw his choices, he would've kept the borders open and then you would complain why he didn't close them earlier. Most countries didn't even act that early. I'm not going to act like the guy is perfect, and you can make the argument that his constant use of exaggerative language isn't always helpful. But I'd rather hear a leader have an optimistic attitude trying to give people some kind of hope rather than "this sucks and who knows when it'll be over". As if we already don't think the latter sentiment or hear it on the news/media 24/7. You're a leader, you're supposed to give people some semblance of hope that you can fix the problem or mitigate it. And he sure handled it better than a lot of countries, including my own. Our leader didn't do anything until the end of March (Trump acted in January) and to this DAY hasn't stopped international flights. He only redirected them to the worst spots where the virus the worst. But citizens of my country (and people looking in from the outside) will think my leader's done a good job simply because he's soft-spoken. Not because his actual actions were good choices.
@holdupwaitaminute.
@holdupwaitaminute. 3 года назад
@@mrshmuga9 You prefer short term blind positivity rather than a long term optimism. That’s like most parents who tell their children that everything is fine rather than educating them to cope with hard times. Life isn’t fair, deal with it. Yes, stay optimistic. But not blind positivity. So my guess is, you haven’t gone to therapy yet. I hope you get one, cuz you need it.
