In this brief video, I show you step by step how I build a 48" x 48" spoilboard for the AVID CNC. Starting with AVID's base layer of MDF, I add a second layer consisting of 4 inch wide MDF strips and aluminum t-tracks to form the main working surface for my CNC machine.

I really like this design. It is straightforward and highly functional. I wonder if you considered having the CNC mill the track channels as well as the dogs all at the same time? This would end up with a template that outlines where all the anchors are. Anyway just curious as this will be my first 4x4 cnc.

That is a very good way as well!

Hey Russ. I really like this design but had a quick question. I see that you and most others glue down the top layer of MDF. I know the 3/4" MDF can be resurfaced a ton but what do you do when it gets down to the top of the t-track? At some point we will all want to just replace the top layer but if it is glued down, how do we remove it? I want to build the same type as you did and was just looking for any future guidance. Thanks.

Depending on how bad you plan on abusing your spoil board it will likely be a long time before you have to replace it. Then you just resurface to where the bottom layer just starts to show. You’ll see your bolt holes. Then glue as many layers of 3/4 MDF. T-tracks should be below the top of the bottom layer but you can just unscrew them and take them out as well.

Loving your content and subscribed. I'm looking at upgrading from my Shapeoko. One great thing about Shapeoko is something they call a Bitsetter. This saves you from re-measuring the Z-height every time you change a tool in the middle of a job. Does Avid have something like this? Do you know if a third party manufactures something like this?

Hey Craig, they have the z height touch plate but no bitsetter. So you have to re-zero when changing tools.

I just bought some armour t track clamps like you have but found they did not fit with the included T bolts. Do you happen to remember the size you used to make them work on your setup?

Greetings! The size the clamps come with don't work. If you built your spoilboard like mine with a base layer and just one layer of 3/4" MDF on top, your Armor clamps will need 1" T bolts. I had a kit with a variety of sizes and knobs, etc. You may find it useful. amzn.to/3FbUV1D Russ

Just setting up my Avid today also. Was there a reason you laid you tracks the way you did vs most ones i see lay front to back?

This layout just worked better with the dog hole configuration I use. You can see that in some of my later videos.

Thanks, I just ordered 7 tracks to make mine with. What dust boot are you using? Need to make or buy a printed one@@BlueLineCNC
