How I Shoot With a Turkish Style Thumb Ring

Tim Piatek put out a video asking for some help regarding using a thumb ring for the thumb release. This is a video on a style of using the thumb ring I have learned recently. I really like this style and am getting pretty good with it, so I figured I would share it with you!
I usually shoot off the right side of the bow if I am using my thumb, as the string twist involved makes any sort of accuracy on the left side impossible. A good friend of mine who lived in Mongolia for six years described a slightly different technique to me. Many of the archers who take part in the yearly archery competitions during the Naadam and other smaller festivals In Mongolia use the thumb draw. Some of them actually shoot the bow on the same side as if using a Mediterranean 3-finger draw. The trick is to not impart any twist into the string. That's where the thumb ring comes in. Here's a video showing this style in action: • Num Sum
I also talk about another technique I've heard of but don't particularly like. It uses the thumb ring itself to draw the bow. I've personally only used it on very light bows and just don't really like how it works.
Thanks for watching and enjoy!

The main joint of the thumb does hurt in the beginning, but as you get used to it the pain fades. The thumb is actually very tough and the ring holds onto the joint rather than the pad. After a week of use or so, any discomfort has gone away even with heavier bows.

left side, right side, right or wrong, the most important thing is that this method works for him pretty well. nice shots

Neither is the "correct way". Left draw works pretty well if you use the quiver on your back and tilt the bow 45° when nocking rather than on the hip.

@@NPC-vg8kx the side of the bow the arrow should be on has to do with "the archer's paradox" and what way each grip will throw the arrow when released.

Finally made a pvc recurve and thumb ring. It is a fun way to shoot but takes some getting used to still very awkward! I doubt I'd ever be as good at it as with my normal bow (60lb takedown recurve or my hickory longbow). But it is a neat thing to try, if anyone out there wants to try it give it a go! Nick, your suggestions about a heat gun made all the difference. Your vids and homemade pvc bows got me into archery in the first place but the heat gun allowed me to make a much better one! Thank you!

That style of thumb draw would be more up my alley. I have tried it with the arrow on the right side but was so clumsy with it. I thought about putting the arrow on the left side, but I did not want to mess with the authenticity of that style. But, now that I know they actually do it, I will have no problem trying it! Thanks for sharing, Nick!

Actually the Turks, the Mongols, The Chinese and the Saracens all put the arrow on the right side. The arrow on the left side is the European way.
@Finnv893
@Finnv893 7 лет назад
not all, army commanders back then generally do not force conscripts to train putting the arrow on the right side, some shot on the left side.....
@SmLXXX
@SmLXXX 7 лет назад
It was the standard traditional way, A war archer had to be trained from an early age. Drill sergeants and commanders have always relied on tried and tested methods that their given cultures relied on, you do not simply go against thousands of years of unbroken archery traditions.
@Finnv893
@Finnv893 7 лет назад
Mohammed Hussein"you do not simply go against thousands of years of unbroken archery traditions"??!!! lol no wonder the mongolian olympic recurve team isnt the best, because the "shoot on the right" tradition has somehow been imprinted into their genetic code which means they only shoot good on the right side now i get it thanks ;-I well thats what they get for breaking tradition i guess....
@SmLXXX
@SmLXXX 7 лет назад
Actually it's because the mongol archery tradition WAS broken. Due to the constant boarder conflicts, raids and uprising, the Qing dynasty devastated and massacred the mongols while also strictly prohibiting the practice of archery. Owning a bow was punishable by death and some cases familiar extermination. That's why the Mongolians don't even use the same style of bows that they conquered the world with, they usually use the Chinese style longbow.
@meguto
@meguto 7 лет назад
chaopz you didnt understand the main reason i guess. shooting on the right side has lots of reason. its not about only hitting on target. a turkish archer want to kill the target and want to do that as fast as possible. first of all the ring which you used calls zihgir. regarding to right hand release technic with zihgir and absorbing bending of arrow at release, right shooting is better. if you are using zihgir its better to shoot from right. but the more important is fast shooting. you can keep your arrows in your hand while shooting and its gives you chance to shoot in every 2 seconds. generally ottoman archers can shoot in 3 seconds. and shooting from left is struggling you on the battle field. there isnt a archer who is not on a horse in turkish army. and its important that you only can use khatra(left hand technics) while right side shooting. there is too much reason about it. first fast shooting, its helps on horseback and better with zihgir.

It does. If you look at thumb rings, there are only a small handful of unique styles that show up all across Asia. This style, a slightly longer version, a solid ring and a ring with a tab seem to be the four major variations that can be found all across Asia.

This is the best description of ‘how to use the thumb ring ‘ to shoot with a thumb ring. How to determine the ‘draw’ for the arrows? And what length of bow ?
@rooroo9216
@rooroo9216 3 года назад
That’s a nice bow and detailed explanation! I just got my first horsebow recently, it’s the Freddy Archery Black Shadow Korean horsebow and it’s 60lbs in draw weight. It’s pretty strong for me, but today I’m going to the range to use it for the first time and what I’m going to be doing at first is the three fingers under draw I usually do (anchor point just under the eye) and resting the arrow on the same side of the bow with the arm that’s holding it (Western style). But what I might do is keep doing the three finger draw but work on switching the arrow to the side opposite the arm holding the bow (Eastern style) so it’s kind of like a half and half East and West style draw? Then one day when I feel strong and confident enough I might eventually buy a thumb ring and do the full on eastern style draw, but I’m relying on the strength of just my thumb and the ring as opposed to my three fingers, it’s a lot of pressure on a small surface, would the ring help reduce that in any way? Plus I get a bit nervous around rings, I used to wear them a lot as a kid and a bit as a teen, but not so much anymore. I’ve seen a lot of people lose fingers to rings, the last thing I need is the arrow whizzing down range at the target along with my severed thumb! 😅😅 EDIT: also btw are those vanes or feathers you’re shooting with? As far as I’m aware you can only shoot feathers with traditional bows right?
@BackyardBowyer
@BackyardBowyer 3 года назад
You can shoot vanes out of a traditional bow, though to do so with consistency would require adding some sort of rest that allows vanes to pass by. Feathers definitely provide much more consistency. You can try that method, just make sure you have control of the bow, as the arrows will tend to go off to the side unless you're conciously adding torque to the bow string with your finger tips. Try and play around with drawing the bow with the thumb. You'll be surprised at how natural it feels everywhere except the thumb itself. That feels like what you'd expect. I have leather thumb rings that I use, there are lots of designs and some inexpensive ones online. As for the hard rings, most are oval so they lock onto the thumb when twisted, but can come off of even a swollen thumb. Thank you for watching!

I really like this style of release. I'm thinking about making a PVC bow like yours and a try to make a thumb ring. I've always been interested in this technique ever since getting into the history of the Byzantine Empire that fought the Huns and other tribes that came from the plains of Central Asia, i.e.: Gheghis Khan, Tamerlane, the Avars, the Parthians (the "Parting Shot" guys) and all of the other horse archers that conquered an area from China to the edge of Hungary.

All well and good if you are shooting from the ground in a stationary position but on horseback where the eastern draw is more commonly used, that moment you create with your finger will push the arrow out of place since you are not stationary. This is why the arrow is placed on the right side. It doesn't really matter when shooting stationary from the ground.

The reason for putting the arrow on the RH side of the bow is so your index finger can push the arrow against the bow - necessary for shooting on horseback. it would simply fall off of the LH side due to the jogging of the horse. Shooting on foot is an entirely different matter.
@mustafaunsoy
@mustafaunsoy 7 лет назад
Sam Percy Actually the main reason is speed. You can place the arrow on the right side in a fluid single motion, allowing you to shoot more arrows in a given time.
@TripleTapHK
@TripleTapHK 5 лет назад
@@mustafaunsoy Actually the main reason is exactly what Hopfolk said. It may be easier to shoot fast with the eastern draw especially holding multiple arrows in the bow hand, but it's mainly used to keep the arrows resting against the bow when riding on horseback. You see, with eastern draw your finger presses up against the arrow causing what is know as in physics as a "moment". This makes the arrow want to move away from the finger and if the arrow is on the left side (assuming a right handed shooter) that will push the arrow away from the bow. This doesn't matter on the ground as shown by traditional Mongolian archers that shoot this way. On horseback where you are being jostled and have to aim dynamically, you will see them shoot with the arrow on the right side because the arrow will push into the bow thereby holding it in place.

If you google thumb ring the fourth result is on a site called primitive ways.

If you maintain the archer's paradox, the arrow should be on the same side as the bow hand. With a thumbring draw, when the string is released, it goes toward the back of the hand (unlike a three-finger release). With the arrow on the same side as the bow hand, the string will press the arrow to the bow as the arrow is released. This maintaining the archer's paradox.
