I am a psych major here at FSU. I’m a part of 2 research teams, one for 2 semesters, the other for 1 ( currently) and I must say if you can do it, do it. It not only is valuable research experience but the networking is also a huge part of it.

I highly disagree with the statement that PsyD as just as much research experience as PhD. The research experience that most PsyD get is far below that of PhD. Most dissertation I have observed coming out of PsyD from my state would not even considered as Master thesis in a PhD program. The statement is simply not true, and that is something that PsyD student needs to be aware because it will cause issues for PsyD to find is job position in research or university institution. 4:08

However I do agree that PhD are getting just as much clinical training as PsyD.

Great point!! I agree with you in that PsyD students don't get as much research experience as PhD overall; what I was trying to communicate in the video is that many PsyD schools are becoming more research oriented although most are still not at the same level as PhD programs and I do mention that in the beginning and end of the video. I think the big picture is that since there is so much variance with how much PsyD schools care about research (my own PsyD program actually cares about research I would say arguely just as if not more than other Phd programs) that it's important to ask the schools directly when applying if research is important, study the faculty members and the number of research publications that the faculty members have, and maybe just play it safe by getting as much research experience as you can because no doubt, that will make you not only competetive for Phd programs if you want to apply there but certainly for Psyd programs as well. In fact having a lot of resaerch experience and applying to psyd programs will make that applicant pretty competetive so my personal take is that it doesn't hurt to play it safe, and will also look good for students down the road when they apply for internship, residency, and board certification in that they'll have that experience on their CV. Just my take, but I agree with your statement as it was also mentioned in the video (my statement is that more PsyD programs today compared to the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s care about research and that number is growing).

How do you get research experience as a non college student seeking to be a strong applicant to a PsyD or PhD program ?

Great question! Some students have contacted old professors from their college career, sometimes there are also research assistant positons posted on indeed that students can apply to, or simply reaching out to PsyD/PhD programs and asking whether there are doctoral students who might need help with their dissertation research. That also counts as research experience! And honestly looks pretty good on a CV. Hope those are some helpful tips. Best of luck.
