My mom died during pandemic quarantine in a senior living. I had not seen her in 9 months due to regulations. The funeral home was wonderful. Have a rental casket for half hour viewing and did her hair and makeup. All free as felt so sorry I didn’t see my mother for so long and she was on hospice. It was a true blessing and then she was directly cremated. Thank you Edwards Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry NY.
I am so sorry you were robbed of such precious time you should have had with your Mom. Death is hard enough but to be separated from your loved one is sinful. I feel our parents saw us come into this life, the least we can do is be with them when they leave this life. God Bless the compassionate people who gave you your final moments with her as she went to her eternal rewards.
Thank you for understanding. Yes the funeral home and people there were so kind and compassionate. When my dad passed we will use them again and for family. Appreciate your comment
I'm so sorry. And I think it's terrible they didn't allow you to see her while she was in hospice, pandemic or not. How kind for the funeral home to do all that for her and your family. Kind for them to make a hard situation a little bit easier and to show you some love.
One of my first jobs out of high school I worked for Tiedemann & Sons in northern NJ- they warehouse fabrics and create the finished linings and coverings for caskets. Our biggest buyer was Batesville. My friends thought it was creepy, I thoroughly enjoyed the work.
Caskets once had plastic protective covers in the '70's. I've learned to cut strips of it to help seal Y incisions before dressing decedents. I assume the job of placing incoming caskets in storage racks is a 2 person job-especially the top ones. I didn't see a lift anywhere. There were times I was forced to do this task alone when no one was around. My spine paid for it in my later years.
I was a semi truck driver I considered working for Batesville casket I was expressed when I saw one of their drivers wheel in a local funeral home near me with double trailers and he got out wearing a 3 piece suit I just never saw or new that existed in trucking I was empressed
I remember seeing one casket on a storage rack in a friend's garage, it was on an air tray with what looked like a heavily padded & quilted top. Resembled a couch missing the back. (Background: his dad & grandfather owned the busiest firm in town at the time. Performed about 80% of the Catholic funerals in town, averaging around 280 cases per year ) His dad said it was a solid mahogany priest case, crafted by a defunct local firm just in case it was needed. Had been there since the late '60's
Batesville goes past my home alot.....also kari, heres one ive never seen.....recent funeral with white casket for a lady, before the interment, the mourners were permitted to write a small note on the top of the casket with an indelible marker.....kind of unique in an odd sort of way......cheers 😄
My best friend died, her husband picked out a wooden casket that all of us could draw on and write our thoughts on it, definitely was a great way to grieve her
We did that for our dog Jake. The vet put him in a white box and so we all wrote notes. My mom said she'd never been to a funeral for a dog before but he was so special and deserved all the feels. His end time was like hospice. A month later he sent us our now dog. Her name is Grace. 😇
Great. I am glad to hear that caskets are checked for damage because they are so expensive. Let’s face it, even though they are going in the ground, and when our loved ones are placed in it, caskets should be in top condition for the visitation. As always, Kari thank you for sharing.
So my Dad was looking at caskets for his old maid sister, the director told Dad that a model had a lifetime guarantee, my dad asked the director how would he (dad) collect on the guarantee. My Dad thought it was hilarious and ridiculous at the same time a casket would have a lifetime guarantee. All the Director could tell Dad was “That’s good question Marty”
Love the vid. My family owns a burial vault manufacturing company that also distributes caskets. We carry Matthew’s aurora and private label brand caskets
The Batesville distribution warehouse in that area appears to be slack. Ours takes the foam off of the hardware on the woods when they inspect them before delivery.
I saw you on the Weakest Link and I was screaming Delta at my TV. You did a great job and I would love you to do a video on your experience being on the show.
Hi Kari, I was just curious, The Craftsman work is really beautiful, and mostly done by hand, and putting a price on having a person buried is priceless, my question is, why are the caskets so expensive to end up being buried in the ground, it's not like the caskets are preserved. I hope I am not being disrespectful. Forgive me if it sounds it
I agree with you. I want to be buried in the cheapest box allowed by law. I don't think it's disrespectful to be buried in a cheap box, but I would do whatever the individual wants. Nobody will see my cheap box, and hopefully they won't even care about my box. I want people to see and remember my heart, not my box.
Agreed. I get it that it's a loved one's final resting place and blah blah. But as with everything it's all about presentation and it's mostly for show.
@@KaritheMortician Batesville caskets, and then those made and manufactured in Mexico . But then there is the upped cost money to the mortuarys cut, so the cost of the casket costs more to the buyer.
What was being stored in the flat cardboard boxes? Is it the small wood ones that people to be cremated are put in/on for the cremation process? Thank you
Funny story a friend of mine told me. He works at Costco and supposedly you can order caskets online. One day a customer just shows up and rolls through the store with a casket so he can return it. I can only imagine the look on people’s faces 😂
So, rentals can be used again, correct? I was told supposedly they couldn't be reused, but that didn't make any sense. We rented one for our dad for his service, then had him cremated.
I was wondering how does the custom casket’s that are painted in NFL or NASCAR or Army, navy, Air Force ECT. Can get to a small town or a grate distance from the builder to the funeral home in just a few days or hours. Have you ever had a client order one from your funeral home ?
I would assume that casket companies employ engineers who design caskets? What goes into designing a casket? Are casket styles the same now has they were 50 years ago or are caskets like clothes in that one style goes out and another style comes in? What style of casket is popular today?
I never knew you could rent a casket?? Do all Funeral Homes do this? I know I want to be cremated but I have been thinking about having a viewing first then cremation. May I ask another question. I do not have life insurance but I cannot afford it. I am 60 years old and have just been working part time jobs since 2009 when I lost my full time job. I was never able to find another part time job so I’ve been working 2 part time jobs but I do not get benefits and live paycheck to paycheck. I am a donor. I am trying to go the cheapest way so my daughter doesn’t have a huge burden. Can I just rent a casket and then cremated without a casket?
I thought they came in cardboard. Are those covers reusable? I would think they would come with a name on the packing slip if they were ordered for someone.
I recall you not recommending rental caskets as they weren’t always in good condition. I would think it keeps funeral homes in business as people opt more for cremation. Not needing to purchase a casket would be a big savings. If priced right the funeral home should make the same amount, no?
All the ones from the big distributers here in the US come finished inside with pillow and throw. Depending on the price and style depends on the quality of what's inside and out.
I have a personal question. I live in Florida my mom passed last year. We are Jewish. Have been trying for months to get the engraving done on the stone that is already there in NY. Every time I call the company they tell me there are issues getting the person. I sent them $200 in May. Are there really still issues up north with it taking so long? I need help!
@@lindakurman8642 That's bound to be your only option. You could call a local to where the grave is funeral home and see if they have someone else who can do the engraving. It will cost you more money but once done you could request a refund from the other company.
And i just thought of another 2 min video you might do, if you have not done already. Winter burials. What happens if ground cannot be dug up? Friend up in Canada said that some winters they store the caskets, with the decedents in them, in the chapel basement at the cemetery until the ground thaws a bit.
The actual put plastic and a box in them. So no clean up. The body comes out and goes straight to cremation. Or that is what they told me at my local funeral home. We rented one for my brother viewing.
No, they aren’t. The wood casket gets a new interior, as it can’t be reused by law, but the shell can be. With a metal casket, on the other hand, it gets scrapped, because, by law, the whole thing can’t be reused. There was a video that mentioned it.
My dad wore thrift stores clothes laid in a rental casket then cremated. He was a frugal man his whole life. Died a millionaire! A disability kept him from splurging during his retirement years.
I have a question. Do the caskets have a lifetime warranty on them? Does the owner of the casket have to file a complaint if something happen to them over the years?🤣😂lol.
