How Joel Embiid Became The NBA's Most Hated Player

Last week both Jayson Tatum and Joel Embiid received DNPs in back to back Olympic qualifying games for Team USA and that started some discussion over who the more hated player is. Jayson Tatum is coming off winning a championship and has basically accomplished everything in his career now. Embiid on the other hand is lacking in individual accomplishments, but he does have an MVP. And while Tatum is definitely hated, Joel Embiid remains the most hated player in basketball at the moment. Today we look at the reasons everyone seems to hate Joel Embiid.

The main reason I loathe Embiid is because he is such a clumsy dirty player. He has more flagrant fouls than Draymond Green in half the games played. Embiid is basically Zaza Pachulia except actually good at basketball.

**Fun Facts:** The only MVP to never advance past the second round of the playoffs All of his offensive numbers(PPG, RPG, APG, TOs, FG%, 3P%) are worse in the playoffs than in the regular season Joel Embiid has been in 12 playoff series. He's shot over 50% in only 3 of them. He's shot under 45% in 6 of them. He once got swept in a series despite averaging FIFTEEN free throws per game(2020 vs. Boston) He had back to back 8 Turnover games in game 6 and 7 against the Hawks (but its Ben Simmons fault) In 2023, he averaged 33.1 PPG in the regular season and 23.7 PPG in the playoffs. That drop-off (-9.4) is the largest by that year's MVP in NBA history. He has shot less than 20% from 3 in 2 of his last 3 playoff runs He’s had one playoff run where he averaged more assists than turnovers Is one of just eight players in NBA history with 1,000-plus playoff minutes and an average of at least five turnovers per 100 possessions. Five of the players on that list also average at least 10 assists per 100 possessions, and Embiid's average of 4.1 tops only Shawn Kemp's 2.9. In five second-round series (29 games), Embiid averages 23.8 points per game on 43/29/82 shooting 0-3 in game 7s with 49% TS and 5.3 TO

I think a big reason Joel gets a lot of hate is cause it actively looks like he tries to deflect accountability. Personally, I think Joel Embiid's hate comes from the interview he had with Rachel Nichols a few years ago when he called himself "the best player in the world." Well, if you're the best player in the world, then you take accountability for the lack of success that the team gets when they underperform. When the 76ers lost to the Heat in 2022, Joel Embiid didn't take the accountability for the loss and talked about how he and James Harden can't do it by themselves. It also doesn't help that Kendrick Perkins created that trash narrative that Nikola Jokic not deserving the 2023 MVP because he's white despite Jokic having more efficient stats than Embiid. That's my stance on it.

I think Joel deserved the 2023 MVP. Like him or hate him, he was great that year. He was my favorite to win it this year too before he suffered his usual injuries. But yeah, I agree. He isn’t the best player in the world because his mentality will never let him be. He’s a choke artist when the pressure gets hot. He’s like Shaq but if you replaced the free throw issues with a mentality problem and a victim complex.

Never understand why people didn't believe Simmons was dealing with mental stuff. The prevailing narrative is that he lost his confidence which caused his game to fall apart. It probably could have been handled better but the guy who just blew a playoff series on the back of self confidence issues only for his team to call him out publicly afterwards having mental health struggles makes a lot of sense. As for the "why didn't he just say that from the start" crowd, I have no idea why a public figure wouldn't want to share his inner demons with a public that was still actively making fun of him and would question his intentions regardless.

I think it’s interesting that the 76rs are really going for it this year, considering that Embiid looks like that injury may have damaged is ability on both sides of the ball. PG and Maxey will need to step up this year I think.

I just don’t think he’s trying in the Olympics. He only joined the team because he saw it as a guaranteed gold medal (since he abandoned his promise to france to join team U.S.A after the team already had 5 superstars join). So, I’m not ready to say he’s “not himself” or “lost his ability.” He views it as an easy win. The same reason he only excels in the playoffs when he believes his team is better than the competition (which has backfired on him since oh I don’t know.. always?)

It's the dirtiness that does it for me. The foul baiting is one thing, but that's not unique (see: James Harden and Trae Young), but he's a disgustingly dirty player. He goes out of his way to injure players but disguises it as "clumsiness". Heck, he ended his own teammate's career (Danny Green) by being dirty and clumsy. He's got more flagrant fouls than Draymond in the same amount of games by a country mile.

Before making this comment, did it ever occur to you that this is the Thunders first time as a playoff team, little alone a CONTENDER, since they began their rebuild? When it comes to competing in the playoffs, he quite literally is a baby. You can’t place Luka or Tatum expectations on somebody’s first time in the playoffs as a competitor and second time in the playoffs as an overachiever in many’s eyes. That isn’t how basketball works. Being an MVP candidate doesn’t automatically validate critiquing post season experience and success when the entirely of the post season is based on experience in it. Edit: Next season, if they don’t make the WCF, then you can start holding him to Luka and Tatum standards. But right now? Absolutely not.
@vise_atoxity8083
@vise_atoxity8083 Месяц назад
@@mattsell2361You’re saying a player whose team just completed a rebuild deserves just as many expectations as a player who has competed on a championship hungry team since 2017? Seriously? With Shai as a star player and a focal point of the offense, this is his FIRST time in the playoffs (ignoring the CP3 year) yet you expect him to be given the same expectations as a player drafted into a championship hungry team on day one who quickly became the star player of said championship hungry team? Stop talking basketball man. Please!

Embiid gets hate because he flops. That's really what it is. He's another Harden or post 2011 LeBron. Guys who are heavier or sturdier than most other players and yet flop all the time. I don't think Embiid should be more hated than say, Draymond, but among stars? Yeah, he's the most hated.

Tatum vs Embiid is kinda hard because you dislike them both for different reasons. Tatum is a great player but he's kinda corny but led his team to 2 finals, winning 1. Embiid is a great player but there's always an excuse, sometimes valid but you're THEE GUY. I usually gave Embiid slack because the "process" got interrupted so who knows what they could have built around Embiid, Simmons, Fultz and Butler had they saw it through, but you can't keep blaming everyone but yourself and not make it out round 2.
