How Long do Cherry Blossoms Last in Japan

During Japan’s Cherry Blossom or Sakura season, the blossoms start blooming at different times in Japan so you can catch them somewhere in the country from March 15 to May 25, sometimes until June in North Hokkaido! But in an area, when they start blooming, they’ll last for 2 weeks, 5-7 days will be with 65-100% bloom depending on the weather. This year (2023) in Tokyo, the blossom season started on March 14 and it was full bloom on March 24. By March 28, they’ll be blown or washed away by wind and rain or the green leafs pushing through. #cherryblossoms #sakura #onlyinjapan

John, you have given the most complete overview of Cherry blossoms, from beginning to end. There is no reason for anyone coming to Japan to miss seeing Cherry blossoms. I do love watching your rainy-day live vlogs. ❤

Thank you for sharing all the info on Sakura blooming. I’ve been following your channel to see if I’m going to be able to enjoy these beautiful flowers. It looks like I will miss it since I won’t be in Tokyo until next Monday evening (April 3).😢 At least I’m seeing them through your camera! 😊

10:35 We booked in 2019 and following various changes were due to arrive in Tokyo today. Unfortunately due to further changes we will now arrive next month. We are still hopeful to see some blossom as we are going to the mountains. However even without the blossom we are anticipating an excellent trip. My wife and I have been following your videos since before Covid. We are both grateful to you John as through you we have learned so much about Japan.

Taking the limousine bus to Narita Airport from Yokohama two days ago there were impressive views of Sakura along the route as we got closer to the airport. I even caught a glimpse from the right side of the bus of a river lined by Sakura about 15 minutes before reaching the airport. It would have been great if the driver could have pulled over for us. Like John said, the most impressive Sakura are on trees that line a river bank and in most cases they will be lined up on both sides of the river. Good luck to anyone headed toward Narita for catching a last glance at the Cherry Blossoms before flying out. If you have your camera ready you might be luckier than I was in catching the dramatic double rows of Sakura lined along both sides of the river near Narita Airport in a photo.

Sad that they bloomed so early this year. Wasnt able to make my trip in late march like usual. Had to wait till April 3rd. Was originally predicted to be a cold winter in japan so i had hopes. 😂

I'm in Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden and the blossoms are spectacular. It is the end of the season but some trees are in full bloom, others shedding petals beautifully.

The blooming periods are pretty close for Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. They are already in full bloom there as well. Sadly going to miss the yoshino cherry blossoms too as I get there on the 3rd

Nice to see, but sorry i missed them this year. They do seem to be getting earlier every year now, possibly due to climate change.

So basically, from the updated website evey week for example full bloom 5 April 2023, meaning that we still can find sakura before 12 APRIL 2023? is that correct?
@onlyinjapanGO

The question is WHERE? It’s not in Tokyo anymore. You can find it up north or in the mountain. You can find them until early June 😉 in Hokkaido.

Do you know the reason why so many many cherry trees are planted on the riversides? That started iñ the Edo period. Many people came to see cherry blossoms and walked on the banks of rivers. That makes the banks stiff to prevent flooding.

Did you see that Chris Broad did a cycling tour and raised over $500,000 ??? So great! You should try something like that, instead of asking viewers to donate towards YOUR costs. Maybe that would get you more subscribers. Still not 300k...ouch! Abroad in Japan has nearly 3 million.
