This is a question that comes up quite often, and it's a good question. If you release the pressure before the resin has fully hardened, the air bubbles will re-expand. In this video I cover what you need to know about pressure casting and how to figure out how long you need to wait before removing your casting from the pressure pot.

Thank you Zac for fantastic and great information. I have a problem sometimes : the bottom of resin, or resin and wood remains very soft, I leave the resin pieces in the pressure pot all night. The resin I use mixes in 2 - 1 part. I would like to know what I'm doing wrong. Thank for your help if you can. Antonio from Sydney.

Hi Zac, I’m new to using a pressure pot and have noticed the pot heating up while the resin cures. Do you think there is any cause for concern? Any advice for a multi layer pour in a pressure pot? I’m pouring a 7” x 7” cube for a diorama. The resin I’m using has a demold time of 8 hours. I guess I’m trying to pull out while still tacky but cured enough for bubbles not to expand again. Thx for all your videos and knowledge!!

If using the Alumilite clear slow, how long after demolding the piece (let’s say 500 grams) do you wait to turn it on the lathe in order to get the best sanded finish at the end? Also, would you mind doing a video on the process of layering Alumilite Clear Slow for the purposes of embedment or sharp and defined changes in color?

I just received the 40 lb containers of Alumilite clear slow. What do I do? I can’t untwist the cap. Am I just weak? Do I pound a hole on the air escape on top. Both holes are covered with thick plastic. I appreciate your help. Marietta

Good Evening. Sorry to bug you but I have an extremely wierd question. There is a show called "Positive Couple" on RU-vid; that's does gigantic resin castings. You might be familiar with them. If so, is there any resin sold in the states that is similar to theirs? They do pour thicknesses that are inches thick. Any help would be appreciated

Thank you- Last night I made a pour of Alumilite clear long set similar to your shredded money pour only using dry hop cone petals. I mixed 10oz each of A and B by weight and added 20oz by volume of the dry organics and poured into a 6x6x1 mold and left it overnight at 65psi. Shop temp was 63 to 65 degrees. I removed the block this morning and noticed the surfaces were a bit tacky so set it in the back room to finish. I checked a few hours later and the "block" had at least doubled in size! Any suggestions as to what I might have done wrong?

Hello Zac. I am currently trying to identify a leak in my pressure pot and it does not seem to be very obvious. Would it be possible to submerge the pressure pot under water?( without the water touching the pressure gage)

Thanks! A label blank is an image printed on a shipping label and stuck to a pen tube then cast in clear resin. Good video. I appreciate your instruction. I have two questions for you while using Alumilite Clear Slow Set . First have you had any success casing turning blanks for a fountain pen? I'm guessing it needs to be opaque and turned as thick as possible. Next, what would cause a 160 gram pen blank to be soft? I left it in the pressure for 6 hours at 40 psi and 70 degrees. The blank fills hard but leaves a hole larger than my 7mm drill bit. This has only happened once but want to avoid repeating my mistake.

Hey Keith, if you mean blanks for a kitless pen, they work great. Made a couple kitless pens myself using blanks made with SS Clear. I'm not sure what would cause softness like that exactly. Is it Alumilite Clear or Amazing Clear Cast? Many people don't realize those are two totally different resins. You can leave it in as long as you like, won't hurt a thing. I do that quite often myself, pop in a few at the end of the day and head home

How about if its a large casting on silicone with epoxy resin lets say 1 kg of resin....i have the a big pressure pot so i can fit inside ...my quastion is if its gonna need a more psi or 50 psi is enough for that much large cast ?

I always take the demolding time (which is stated as 30 min by the manufacturer) and at least double or triple it to make sure it has completely cured. This is especially true if the object being casted is complex with undercut and very fine pieces. Better to leave it on the silicone mold longer than you need to than to pull it out before it is completely hardened. If I am not in a time crunch I may leave it for 5-6 hours or even overnight.

Yeah, I can do a quick video that covers our setup. It's probably overkill for most home shops, but I'd be happy to show our equipment. We used a really cool piping product for our air lines that I think would be interesting to see as well if anyone is thinking about running air piping throughout a shop

Whats the slowest curing Aluminite? Would like to try in a vacuum. I get away with poly resin which cures pretty damn fast in some situations.

Richard Wilkinson the slowest one I use sets up in 12 minutes. They have other products that are slower though

What is your opinion on a vac chamber vs using a pressure pot? My question is would the internal stressed caused by compressing the gas bubbles cause any cracking or chipping? Have you ever experienced anything like that with bigger casts of 20 or so ounces?

Hey Morgan, I prefer pressure because it is the only thing that will work with the fast setting resins I use. Pressure works instantly, but the resins I use would start to set up before the vacuum has pulled all the air out. I suppose vacuum would work with slow setting resins, but I have never tried it myself. Personally, I would prefer pressure over vacuum in most cases, but vacuum may be a better choice for certain applications and resins. As far as I know, compressing the air won't cause any cracking, and I've never seen that happen to any of the castings I've made and cast under pressure. Cracking typically occurs in large pours because the resin overheats. There are some formulas of resin, like Alumilite Clear Slow Set, that exotherm at a lower temperature and are made for pouring large quantities at once.

I read thru a lot of the comments so I hope I am not repeating a question; my question is what size air compressor os good for this pressure pot? Hey Linda, great to hear you're jumping in!! I'm not too certain on what the absolute minimum requirements are, but I have heard really good things about the California Air Tools (not to be confused with C.A. Technologies) compressors. They work great for resin casting (and would be a really good general purpose compressor to be used for just about anything in a workshop), and they are super quiet compared to other oilless compressors. Not enough working time to use vacuum, pressure is the way to go with Alumilite. Plus, I using vacuum forces air bubbles to expand and cause a mess in the mold, I don't personally find vacuum to be useful with resin casting

Hay Zac, My name is Bill and I am just starting out making my own alumilite blanks. I'm using an old 2 1/2 gal pressure pot that has a 50 psi max pressure and the pressure relief valve activates at 40 psi. My main question is, what is the ideal pressure for casting Alumilite blanks and do I need to get a new valve that is closer to the maximum 50 psi? By the way, I haven't made any yet, I am just now trying to put my pot together.

Hey Bill, it's generally better to go with a higher pressure. There's no ideal pressure, but you definitely want to be at least at 40 minimum. Check to see if the safety is adjustable first, if not then I'd get one that's set to 50. You can use Polyester Resin or Epoxy as well. Alumilite is polyurethane resin. They all work fine, but I like Alumilite best for turning blanks

A little bit late but I think the problem is that you didn't make your silicon mold at the same pressure you used in your resin. You must make your mold in a pressure pot also so your mold can resist that pressure without deforming and shrinking

Zack. So why do the smaller molds take longer to cure? It seems the less amount of resin would take a shorter time to cure?

Great question! The more resin, the more heat it will generate. So very small amounts of resin will require longer to cure because they don't generate as much heat

Humidity maybe, if you have moisture in your air compressor or in the line. But inside the pressure pot the altitude shouldn't matter cause you are applying a set and even air pressure to the contents within it

Hi Dale lay the pressure pot on its side and place an air heater (or a hair dryer might work) 100mm away from the bottom of the pot with the lid off.When the bottom of the pot is hot leave for 10 minutes then simply lift your casting off the bottom of the pot. Remove the residue from the pot while hot with a no scratch scraper of wood or plastic. Don't use any solvents. Heat is all you need.

Definitely not a dumb question at all Jason! As long as the pressure pot doesn't have any leaks that would cause the pressure to drop too far before the demold time, you can just close off the ball valve and unhook the air hose. If your pressure pot leaks, you could choose to leave it hooked up and under pressure to ensure that the pressure never drops. I don't recommend doing that if you don't have to because it can be more dangerous leaving a constant pressure hooked up to the pot in the unlikely event that the regulator and safety valve both fail. Granted, that is pretty unlikely... but still it does increase the danger when it could be avoided

Very dumb question from a noob: are you leaving the pressure pot ON while the piece is sitting in there for the entire demolding period, or do you pressurize it for whatever period of time and then just let the piece sit in there for a a few hours/over night etc. Sorry, very new to all this!

Zac one question (or the community): Can I move the pressure pot with the air inside? Is it safe? Because I have the problem that in my garage is too cold so the silicone is curing very slowly...But I can't move my compressor inside my apartment so the only thing that I can do is to fill my pressure pot with air and then move it in my home.

Yeah that's no problem at all, it won't hurt anything to move it while it's pressurized. Only thing you need to watch out for is spilling resin or silicone if it's still liquid

Yeah, polyester resin can be cast under pressure no problem. You just don't want to get an open flame near the resin. Often times, people use lighters or torches to pop air bubbles on the surface of epoxy, but you'll light PR on fire if you do that. Epoxy isn't flammable though.

You mentioned PVC pipe molds. They will work in a pressure pot even though you only have a .75 inch diameter opening where the resin is exposed? I always thought you would need more exposed surface area for the pressure to do its magic.

Zac!!! HELP PLEASE!!!! I'm trying to make an Alumilite blank, black and gold.... I can't seen to get the gold powder to disperse the way I want. I'm trying to swirl it through the black but no mater what I've tried, I end up with one completely black side. I've tried waiting for the Alumilite to firm up, waiting 7-8 mins and I've tried layering it. Nothing has worked so far. I get great gold swirls one side and completely black on the other. It seems to always float up, leaving one side black. Do you have any suggestions? Additional info. When I mix my Alumilite, after mixing till clear, I pour some of the clear resin into a small cup where I mix my gold powder. Thanks Zac

Hi Zac, that tube-in pen mold you held up at minute 5:43, do you know if cigar pen tubes will work in that mold? I tried asking on two forums and a eBay selling them and I get no answer. I don't want to pay $30.00 for that mold then it ends up not being wide enough for cigar pen tubes. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure which one that is, I have a few different ones for different length tubes. I get them from Fred Wissen at www.ptownsubbie.com, he's got molds that are made specifically for Cigar pen tubes

Thanks for sharing the website, Zac. He has quite a variety of pen molds, more than I've seen anywhere on the Internet. I bought one of the cigar pen molds and can't wait to cast using it and dump the one I made that allows the resin to leak into the pen tube.

I know this is a stupid question so don't judge me, HA. If I have an item that is to wide to fit in a pressure pot do you see a problem with laying the pot on its side in order for the piece to fit. This should not have any influence on the operation of the pot correct? A sealed pot is a sealed pot I would assume.

Hello. I've just taken my newly converted pressure pot for a spin...and ruined two molds. The casts came out with bubble like protuberances all over them which are reflected in the mold like tiny holes. They weren't there originally. Any ideas? The first I had at around 55psi, the second didn't exceed 40psi. Thanks.

I'm guessing the molds were not degassed and there were air bubbles in the silicone. That's a crucial step when making molds that are going to be used in a pressure pot. I have tracked down a reasonably priced Vchamber and ordered it. Thanks again. There's no way to salvage molds when that has happened, right? For non-pressure casting?

Yeah, some silicone types say they don't need to be degassed, but I would do it for anything you plan to pressurize just to make sure. If the mold has been deformed, I don't think it can be salvaged. Only thing you could maybe do is to try and cut out the deformities and pour more silicone over it. I think it would be easier just to remake the mold though

Most epoxy resins are around 24 hour demold time.

Cactus juice is a stabilizing resin used to resin impregnate wood, that is a totally different animal than casting resins though. This video doesn't apply to that process. I have videos on stabilizing though if you want to check them out: ru-vid.com/group/PLoeB-EPC_91vC03jk5hS8SH_7Ow4nqyZL

After I cast a piece, and have baked it. How do I store it until I'm ready to use it.

I usually give it the full cure schedule just to make sure it polishes up best. For Alumilite Clear it's 5-7 days, for Alumilite White it's 72 hours. I'm not sure about other resins though. Not to be confused with the demold time, full cure is the full hardness, demold time is generally how long it takes to harden up enough to take out of the mold. Bare minimum, I'd wait 24 hours to turn it, but once it's fully cured it will be the hardest and will polish up best

Thanks. But storage on a finished, cured piece. Should I just let it be on a shelf for a month or put it in a bag or something.

I'm not sure what you are talking about a finished cured piece. Are you talking about casting resin?

Yes. After vaccum, and after baking the resin with my wood. If I wanted to make extra to have. What's the best way to store a blank for later use.
