Bold of you to assume there can ever be an end to fate. Sooner would the endless ebb and flow of the tides see their end than Pat and Brian cease their endless dance of yin and yang, opposing energies that are the same yet different. Long after even the stars are gone, Pat and Brian will still be there, growing diametrically opposed lengths of hair
One time I recorded my roomate snoring so I could distort it and use it as part of a creature noise, his snore sounded like a hybrid between a chainsaw and a bear growling, so pretty perfect
Dig this format! Would 100% watch more videos of you breaking down very specific art disciplines in game design, learning about them, and then putting them to use in random ways.
i had never really put much thought into how much joy sound design brings me. thank you for bringing this to my attention. HOWEVER, how is there not a download for the laptop opening noise??? share your creations with the world simone
All the raw sounds, please! I think you were actually pretty close to something, but the balance wasn't quite right. Too much *creak*, not enough *lint roller plap*.
Polygon employees: Sitting at their desk doing their work. Simone & Pat: Comes in and start tapping and touching things trying to find the best Sounds™. Polygon employees: ??????
"Now dear RU-vid commentor, I would show you the drinking foley man in my basement, but it *is* quite cold down there, and I'm sure you have a prior arrangement to get to..."
Halfway through this video there was a shot where you opened the laptop, and... my brain "supplied" a sound that wasn't actually there. I legit have zero idea how to express what the sound was, but it is now my life's goal to create it, because the one you ended up with wasn't it and that upsets me greatly. It was great! but it wasn't *right*. For a given value of "right".
At around 6:38, when Simone's hand touched the laptop, I heard a slight thump that I'm not sure was in the actual video. It was soft and quiet but still defined and it was Good. I am also disappointed my sound did not end up in the final Sound, but I am able to live with it. Good luck on your journey.
I wish there was like an un-cut/behind the scenes of this video, I can't stop imaging how much fun making this was. Thanks for bringing joy to the internet guys
This actually is an excellent video bc it really shows the work of sound designers and also that you don't have to be one professionally to try your hand in it and potentially fall in love with the process - or just have more fun
Simone’s videos are always so good! Somehow she made me appreciate Brutalism, after a lifetime hating it. They’re so informative and entertaining and a joy to watch. But they can work too well. This video convinced me to turn my apartment into a sound studio, i have no more funds, my family has abandoned me, i have already spent $20,000, simone please
Hello lint roller my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Took my airpods while I was sleeping And the sound that was recorded in my brain Still remains Within the sounds of Simone.
Did anyone else instantly start picking up random objects around you to see what kinda sound they would make? On a completely unrelated note, running a decorative hair pin along the bottom of a hair spray canister sounds like a cricket.
As a Sound Designer myself, I really love these kinds of videos. Audio peeps dont get the credit they deserve sometimes so I'm glad you were able to feature some great talent and showcase what we do! Great Job ^_^
This was such a fun and informative video. I never really realized how much went into sound design and how quirky it could be. Great job displaying it in this one short video!
Yoshi That makes sense, cause a lot of asmr is just foley work. At least for the roleplaying ones. EphemeralRift and Phoenician Sailor did a collab called The Saturday Delivery that uses a lot of foley.
I've always had Foley work as a sort of "what I wanna do when I grow up" when people ask me(I'm 27...) alongside being an author or musician. But seeing this video really cemented it as a thing that deeply satisfies and interests me
I remember a video about horror sound effects showing how zombie sounds were made and it was.... significantly more upsetting than the dirty lint roller. I have memories of raw chicken I can't let go of.
Please do more of these videos! games are an art form with so many complex layers and details and with people behind every decision. there's a lot of creative input and passionate people who's jobs are to make virtual life entertaining and fulfilling
this is exactly what I helped a friend of mine do when he was going to interview for a job at a video game company back around 2000. was a pretty fun 24 hours. he also totally got the job
Foley work has always been a massive niche interest for me. Ever since seeing a video probably 18 or so years ago when I was a kid, where two guys were in a room doing real time foley work for a movie. The insanity of them rushing about and grabbing things at the right time, one walking in spot on a thing to make footsteps, punching a big piece of meat, opening a small creaky cabinet for door sounds etc. I was just so engrossed. I'm mad foley work doesn't get enough love in this world and thank you for spreading some more love to it. This video was so wholesome and got across some of the reasons I love foley so much.
I was a huge film nerd in high school, and I was an intern at a film studio. One summer I got to work in a foley studio for two weeks and it was hands down the coolest film experience I’ve ever had. It’s even more complex and creative in games, and I just think that is beyond cool.
The Art Gallery I used to work at had an exhibition from a Dutch Painter, who animated his painting, but his day job was as a Foley artist. So he walked us through some of the pieces, and the most memorable of them was an animation of birds flying by that, for the sound, he slapped uncooked chicken pieces on a wooden block.
Good sound design is something I notice without fail in a piece of media whenever it's present. It makes such a big difference I feel and can be crucial to constructing the tone or nature of the work. Love this video! Love that someone's talking about sound design for once lol
The sound collecting is one of the most fun experiences for me! I listen closely with mindfulness to every little sound I can catch, to all the details in it and imagine what potentials hide inside it! Every object transforms into some kind of instrument that you can play in different ways and it's fun to just experiment and hear what happens!
I tried audio design once when a guy in the RPG Maker community I used to frequent asked for sound effects for a zombie game he was working on. I recorded some moans and an eating sound, which was me chewing on paper. It sounded really good, considering the crappy mic I owned back then
when that guy was pressing the remote right beside the mic, it sounded like the radiation sound effect or the sound you get from a geiger counter. I love the radiation sound effect.
A few years back I was producing a slew of modern radio dramas. We had a production team working entirely as a labor of love because it was airing on WFMU each week. We had a key group of great sound designers to do it, but when we got into a post-production bottleneck and tried recruiting more enthusiastic free-labor-suckers-in-arms it was really hard to convey some of these concepts to the less experienced sound designers. This video is a great insight into the process, nice work!
I love how helpful Brian was being for this one. Like, he's clearly tired, trying to edit or research, and he stops to help Simone with her quest for Good Sounds. Peak Co-workers right there. I wanna work for polygon.
Super entertaining video. First video I've seen by this particular creator, you can tell she had a lot of fun which made me have fun too. The people I've seen who create for Polygon seem to really enjoy their work and it shows through in the content. Thanks!
Cool video. I remember watching the sound designer for Child of Light talk about the sound effects for that game, and thinking it was cool how he used a flower to create Aurora's flapping wings.
