Avoid carbs ie: sugers...add a pinch of table salt to the pot of coffee & a teaspoon of baking soda in the coffee pot before it brews...table salt is going to help your electrolyte issues while the baking soda is the active ingredient in Pepto bismuth antacid which together stabilizes the bodies PH levels & ended my wife's ketoacidosis...
I do 0 carbs. And the keto and intermittent fasting. Mostly eat 1 meal a day sometimes too. Went from A1C of 13 go 5.5. No longer diabetic for about a year! Dr. Bergs plan works and I feel and look fantastic!
@@Xena-xp7ly Began to feel better in about a week. Went down over time. Maybe first 3 months went to about 9 and next 3 months 5,8; then 5.7; then 5.5 and stayed. I perfected things, Didn't start w 0 cards; Tried cut down to 20, then 15; then 10, etc. Eat no fruit (which I love) and sometimes will have Rebel Ice Cream with 4 net carbs no sugar and super delicious. It is probably only carb I do and maybe once a week and have not had an impact on my blood sugar readings or A1C. Hope helps.
Mr Gore, I have a million questions for you and very impressed with your journey sir. Trying to get my DH A1C down and looking for any and all advise. How do you actually do ZERO CARBS daily? A lot of meat and fresh vegetables intake? IF & KETO is easy enough but DH must have something to eat in the morning with his AM Meds otherwise, they make him nauseated sometimes. Please elaborate on your daily habits, if you don't mind? So happy you're living the healthiest lifestyle you can! Only we can take care of our bodies...no one is going to do it for us so I want to help and educate DH with everything I can learn. THANKS AND TAKE CARE!!!!!
I know he had to give the disclaimer “talk to your doctor first,” but they are the ones with the bad advice. Even after major health gains my docs still tell me to lay off the saturated fats.
It's due to the fear of saturated fat wisdom based on zero science. Brainwashed like the rest of us until we snapped out of it and began to question the bad advice
@@shazam314 My doctors warned me about it but after my exams and annual testes they say “Just keep doing what you are doing.” Then I feel they think they have to add “try to lay off the saturated fats.”
I have listened to you for a while now. Best advice ever. Love it. The other day I was in the ER with my mother. (She’s fine) and I did not eat. My husband brought me a bag of pretzels. My blood sugar was so low and after 7 hours waiting in the ER I ate them. Well, let me say it was the worse thing I could have done. I was miserable. It took me three days to get back to normal. I was hungry, irritable, angry, agitated it just did a number on my body with aches and pains and inflammation and I knew better but I did it anyway. Now I know. No matter how hungry and how low blood my blood sugar gets I won’t eat anything that I’m not supposed to eat. A hunk of cheese would’ve been far more appropriate. I have since educated my husband who does not have type two diabetes and has not a clue how this affects a person. He knows now after three days of putting up with me. LOL.
Dr. Berg, I am a primary care physician and I have been recommending your channel to many of my patients for well over a year now. I never recommend more than 100 gm of carbohydrates per day for any patient in my practice but for diabetics many of them I have encouraged them to explore the fundamentals of keto diet as well as intermittent fasting on your channel. Thanks for all that you do.
@Eddie Money Your ticket to paradise is to follow Dr. Berg's advice. First reduce the sugars in your diet and lose weight. If you have persistently high TG's then it may also be due to genetic defects in your lipid metabolism. Pancreatitis is usually caused by gallstones or alcohol. But in your case it's likely familial (not really knowing you). If the TGs go above 500 then you will always remain at risk for recurring pancreatitis.
@@ttii9 You can eat higher carbs as long as you are active enough to burn them. I would take the metformin before the meal and exercise the muscles after the meals which will increase your insulin sensitivity. This will help reduce the blood sugar spikes associated with meals (especially high carb). If you're not living an active lifestyle, then reduce your carb intake to the minimum per day (I suggest 100gm net carbs or less depending on your circumstance, i.e. need to lose weight or have insulin resistance. Also, high would avoid high carb in combination with high fat as this will play havoc on your insulin release, potentially worsening your resistance.
that was a great answer to that question. I have a friend with Prediabetes who was of course counseled to do exactly what you described. I tried to get him to try Keto or at least low carb. So far I have not been successful. He tried keto very briefly. His doc told him it is "unsustainable" and he latched on to that and stopped. I have to balance helpful advice with pushing too hard. But I will gently suggest he watch this video.
Just finished my first 5 day “fat fast”...consumed 1500 calories every day from 1/2 pack of butter, a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil, olive oil and MCT oil....(plus salt, cod liver oil and K2 annatto, etc) didn’t experience one single hunger pang...lost about 1lb....consumed 0 carbs...0 protein.....slept well...had sooo much energy..(digesting food takes a lot of energy)...my skin is great...my joints have improved... This was incredibly easy to do compared with starvation/water only fasts. I know I could reduce the calories to 1000 and still not be hungry at all. I’m hoping that this will really boost my insulin reversal and clean my liver and eliminate all bad inflammation. Going to eat at weekends only...high nutrient dense food only...kidney, liver, leafy greens, spirulina, wheatgrass powder, acv, fungi, prebiotics, milk thistle seeds, nuts, seeds, eggs, bone broth, etc....really load up on nutrients at the weekend and just live on 0 carb 0 protein fat fuel during the week...going to try this for a couple of months...will keep you updated 😁

This is the kind of diet my relative was fed in a long term care home and she diet of diabetes induced dementia. They just kept increasing her meds and it didn’t work.
New to this channel and I'm already feeling healthier. First thing is to change to Himalayan sea salt, second - leave the fat on the steak. I'll then try to cut way down on grains and fruit.
Oh man if you haven't cut out the grains and fruit yet just wait to see how amazing you feel. Cutting out the grains/starches is massive. Keep going you'll have tons of energy.
Ah doctor Berg. U saved my life and my sanity. I discovered ur video about insulin resistance 2 years ago and it was a turning point in my life. I was as wide and I was tall back then. Now I'm slim and vibrant enjoying my food and my life and every single breath. Though I transitioned to carnivore over the last year to fight my ibs symptoms. Thx doctor
Yes I went through all of this with my doctor and dietician. Then I took my health into my own hands. I put my T2D in remission. I take NO meds. I shoot for ZERO carbs everyday but ALWAYS consume less than 10 carbs a day.
I eat a 99% animal based diet. I usually fast until lunch but I do have black coffee or tea in the morning. If I am hungry at all in the morning I will have some bacon and/or eggs but usually I am not hungry. I have burgers or ground beef sometimes with cheese. I have a filet mignon with butter or a ribeye for dinner. I pretty much eat beef, bacon, eggs, butter and cheese. Sometimes I have seafood or poultry but these foods aren’t as satiating. Some people call it a carnivore diet. I just call it delicious and satisfying.
This is exactly the diet the VA nutrition specialist is teaching. My hubby is diabetic & we went just to see what she would say. I about fell off my chair when she told us what he could & should eat 45 - 60 carbs for each of the 3 main meals & 15 - 30 carbs for the 3 snacks. Add that up & no wonder there are so many diabetics & then they will never get off meds. Of course this is what they want. They don’t want you to be healthy. She said just try it & you will see how it works because your body uses carbs for fuel. We had a follow-up appointment but cancelled it. I’ve been a nurse for over 40 years and it’s just insane all the meds that people are on most of the time due to diet. If I wasn’t “awake” & know better my hubby would have been joining the unhealthy club right along with all the others. He made bad choices for many years & wouldn’t listen until he had no choice - blood sugar & blood pressure sky high, he had several strokes, very painful lower extremities due to neuropathy , he could hardly walk. Of course they put him on all kinds of meds. He had reactions to some so we stopped them & told the docs no adding more meds. He is down to 2 meds now & working on getting him off them. We IF, low carbs and getting him outside walking as much as I can. His hba1c went from greater than 14 to 8.9. It’s a process & takes time. He’s doing much better. Still have a ways to go. We have 2 neighbors that were just recently diagnosed with diabetes & guess what? They were told this wonderful high carb low fat diet also. I’m doing my best to suggest to them better alternatives. One is listening & doing quite well. The other just doesn’t want to give up the rice. She is used to eating lots of rice in her culture. So she is now on insulin. The other lady has actually decreased her meds by decreasing the carbs. Amazing!! We were in the store the other day & behind us was a lady that was all out of breath & didn’t look so good. I was afraid she was going to code right there. She was leaning on her cart trying to catch her breath. I didn’t say anything even though I really wanted to. Then she starts unloading her cart - birthday cake waffles, chips, frozen ready made pizzas & other meals - not one healthy thing in that cart. I just stood there & looked at her - she was overweight had a very large abdomen also. This is why so many are sick. It really makes me sad what people are eating. Thank you Dr. Berg for getting this message out there & you always explain things very clearly & simply. I have my hubby watch your videos because you do explain things so well & he has had a hard time understanding things since the strokes & he listens to someone else better than he does to me sometimes. It helps reinforce what I’ve told him - thank you again. Also we requested a fasting insulin & c-peptide. The nurse didn’t know what it was & had a hard time to find it in the VA list. His fasting insulin was 8.6. His c-peptide was 0.5. Sounds contradictory. Not sure what to make of it. I think he’s insulin resistant & may also not be making enough of his own due to all the years of eating so many carbs. Thanks again for all you do & also for all the wonderful & informative comments.
@@Xena-xp7ly Sept was the first at greater than 14 and then 3 months later in Dec it was 8.9. He is still on insulin. Less units than before. So will have to wait until March for the next a1c.
RN Angel, the VA is my only option, too. Unfortunately, they follow the government's 'Standard of Care' protocol. All I ask for is labs and I refuse to take medications. I guess I'm a really bad patient, as they put a 'NON COMPLIANT' sticker on my medical file. Now THAT makes me smile!!
@@vickieturner8688 We understand that - his chart has Refused against medical advice on it for several meds. Even outside the VA they have the same protocols. I didn’t work in a VA facility but it’s the same. The way I feel they can write whatever they want. I have a great doc and he doesn’t push meds or anything. He already knows the answer is no - lol. Glad your a fighter too!!

I have about 75 carbs per day and don't gain weight or have any blood sugar issues. I weigh a lean, fit, and healthy 135 pounds at 5'7". I do eat a hell of a lot of eggs, fat and meat protein on my keto-carnivore journey. I've been stable on this for the past two years and am physically stronger than ever. So, for me, and me only, about 75 carbs is Magical. I'm convinced that each person must find their own way to health, or things, health wise, will end badly for them.
Thank you for that comment. I have lost too much weight, Starting weight 165 lbs, now 128lbs, 5'8", 66yrs old, female, clean keto for 7 months. I have always exercised daily, nothing too strenuous, T'ai Chi, pilates, walking 3-5 miles a day. For the past 6 weeks I've been adding some carbs because eating over 2,500 calories a day is just really hard for me. I have just started going up to 50 carbs a day from 20-25, all vegetable. I was never a big sugar consumer, never ate fast food or anything too bad, except bread, which obviously I don't eat now, nor do I miss it. I have never used any of the keto-recommended substitutes, nor do I use sweeteners of any kind. Can I ask you what carbs are you consuming? I want to stay fat-adapted, I love the clarity of mind & health benefits & don't want to lose that.

Dr Berg is so right on. A few years ago I went to a diabetic nutritionist wanted me to eat 45 carbs at each meal!! I went paleo instead now do Keto. Never been on meds.
I had been fighting elevated blood sugars for a couple weeks (month 2 of keto). Tried a lot of things to get it back down. Thanks for the salt reminder. Drank 30 oz water with salt and no salt this morning. Blood sugar dropped right back down from 150s to 103. I had checked it multiple times today, since I also do IF. Didn't see it drop too much from morning. But after giving my body a chance to process the salted water.... Wow!
My mum, whos a diabetic, thinks that she should eat five small meals a day and that her diabetes is just a result of stress. Such situations show how "mundane" things, like eating, seem so secondary to us before they yield unnecessary suffering....
Wow great information I give you a medal . You are completely right . I am type 2 diabetes I went to the endriconology Dr and she told me to consume about a Huge amount of carbs . In my case my insulin usually had spikes in the morning . This is completely insane . I reverse my type 2 diabetic consuming low carbs . Eliminating mostly rice , bread and increasing a large amounts of vegetables and salad . I feel so energized. My body size is 4 and I used to be size 12 . Thank you so much . I am saving this video. 👍🏼
Thanks so much for this video, Dr Berg! I've got Type 2 Diabetes (13.3 at diagnosis - now managing through keto and intermittent fasting to keep my A1c levels between 6.6 and 6.8 :-). Next goal - to get below the level for diagnosis of diabetes. So many videos talking about keto or IF don't necessarily address diabetes - hence my appreciation for your taking the time and energy to make this video. Yours in Gratitude
Dr Berg my parents are diabetic and want to come off medication I have been following you and keto for over 2 years. they like the results with lowering carbs but the “diabetes specialist” keep enticing them with being able to eat certain food saying they can have bread at meals even cookies and parents situation it not improving it frustrating!!! They need to decide junk food or their life?!?!
Kristen, you are correct! I pray that your parents make the right decision. It's amazing that people are literally committing suicide on a daily basis by blindly following their doctor's recommendations. I also have loved ones who refuse to go against what their doctor says. It's heartbreaking!
I’ve been struggling for a few years now with diabetes. My Doctors & Nutrionist both have said the same thing to me for years. “The typical experts advice”. Until recently I was actually on 3 insulin’s ! Since Dr Berg (& another local doctor I know ) came along. Now I’m off one insulin completely & lowered my others significantly ! I have lost weight- but more importantly I feel so much better ! I’m more alert & full of energy. I have changed my life around. Thank you Dr Berg ! Your a true hero
Just want to say Thank you... simple fact is low carb /keto IF works i was able to reduce a1c to 51 to 45 in 2 months and lose 25lb ... keep up the good work 👏
I followed the diabetic diet about 20 years ago, I weighed 315 lbs and I lost 125 lbs, I did 60 carbs per meal 30 carbs per snack 3 meals 3 snacks per day. However, I had to cut back on how much I ate as I lost weight. It took me 2 years to lose the weight, I have gained back 50. I was always hungry waiting for the next meal or snack. I just started keto and im never hungry, losing weight faster, more energy. I was pre diabetic when I started now blood sugar is in normal range. Both diets work, but keto is the most satisfying when it comes to hunger and results. I also like doing intermittent fasting and prolong fasting, it helps with energy.
When I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 4 yrs ago, the “nutritionist/ dietitian” told me I could eat 45g of carbs per meal. PLUS having a snack after dinner of 15g of carbs. That’s 150g per day with 3.5 meals a day! She really wasn’t very helpful with dietary advice. I really believe they need to update their teachings, because they are keeping people fat and unhealthy. I’m so glad I found your channel. I have learned so much in the past couple of weeks or so and I am already seeing results.
I eat meat based keto About to do a carnivore diet soon My limit will be 24 total grams of carbs Cheese, Kefir, Yogurt, Whole Raw Milk, and even honey Honey 1/2 tsp
After a while, I predict you will ditch the dairy and honey and go with eggs, cheese, and meat and a couple of 6 carb slices of bread. Maybe some broccoli. Honey will make you hungry and then crash.
@@Tom-Travels I literally have a measuring set that goes to as small as an 8th of a teaspoon Less than 2 grams of carbs in that little of honey I plan to go 100% Carnivore and see how that plays out No I will not quit dairy And never make the mistake of quitting keto again My blood sugar off keto was slightly higher than usual
I notice when I keep my carbs less than 30, I have less emotional problems, and my PTSD(45 years old) is very manageable. Have you found research, Dr. Berg, on the correlation between Ketogenic Diet and helping with PTSD?
I believe that "what get's measured... get's done." Focus on carb counting means less focus on past trials and tribulations and soul crushing memories.
I wonder if it’s because when you digest carbs you use up b vitamins and so you become deficient. A deficiency in b fits particularly b3 is linked to mood disorders
Thank you Dr. Berg! When I was diagnosed with T2, I asked my doctor about diet changes and he told me to follow the ADA(experts) diet. I'd hate to think what my health would be like if I had followed his advice. BTW, I never went to that doctor again. I once lost 40 pounds on the South Beach Diet, but I couldn't stick to it. And of course it came back on plus more. But I am on Keto now and with all your helpful videos and great recipes, I think I have found my way of life...finally!! One more thing, keto solved the puzzle as to what was causing my lower legs and feet to swell in the evening. Since I started keto, no more swelling. Thanks!! Too bad it won't fix lumbar degenerative disk disease or replace cartilage in my hip joint. Guess that's asking too much.
This is such a good video! One of your best, Dr. Berg! This advice goes great type 1 diabetics, too. You just have to be a little more careful as you adjust, so your glucose doesn’t get too low. But as for checking with your doctor...? My endocrinologist knows nothing about diet and nutrition!
Excellent. Thank you. Very bold in talking on the so called experts. Very useful information. I was continuously looking for answer to this question and I got the answer.
Three years ago we started the keto diet because my husband was diagnosed with diabetes. His doctor gave him 3 months to try it out. He lost 45 lbs, his account went from 7.5 to 5, most importantly his triglycerides dropped from over 500 to 120. He's 71, works out now 5 days a week and feels great. Keþo works!!
I respect the disclaimer but the GREAT RESULTS I've had, mental and physical from following Dr Berg's lesson's and putting them into practice is enough proof i need. The information and the way he explains everything has helped me understand my own body and allowed me to FIX MYSELF.
This wasn't far off from the first recommendation I got from one of the best endocrinologists in my city and region in Brazil! Do they really want you to come off the medication? I don't think so. It took me three years to find Dr Eric Berg and try his suggestions. Two years later, I have no regrets.
Welcome to my world. For 10 years my endocrinologist (I’m type 1) said that I can eat whatever I want, just take insulin to cover the carbs. 10 years later I felt like crap and I gave up carbs out of desperation. Fast forward a year later and I’ve lost 30 pounds and my insulin intake is a quarter of what it was before. I feel great and I am not looking back. Time for a new endocrinologist though.
sadly type 1 is also going to be a bit different then a type 2 (which I am) from the different videos I have seen while you still will need your pump you may not need it as much on keto and lets face it Keto is going to be always better on the better...less garbage in the body
My endocrinologist wants me to eat 45-60 carbs/meal! Suggested toast and banana for breakfast. I said, "NO." I have type 2 diabetes. I have lowered my A1C from 13.5 to 9.5 so far doing keto/carnivore + intermittent fasting. Dr. Berg you are saving my life!
@jonnyC's Everything you did not understand my sentence perhaps. You first wrote about white bread, zi wrote that whole grain, bio is NO better than that slice of white! So we do agree.I gave a brainwashed diabetic 2 friend who follows the German nonsense that whole grain bread is fine .....!
Dr. Berg, This will make your head hurt, a friend on mine is a T2 and his doctor has him on Trulicity and Metformin. He also has him on a diet of 180 g carbs a day. He said if he doesn't eat that many carbs he'll go low (~70s). His A1C is 13. If he would at least cut his carbs in half I bet he could come off the Trulicity. Good example of a diabetic vicious circle. I'm a T2 on keto and have been keeping my A1C between 5.3-6.0.
I love your videos, and I am considered "prediabetic", but through wearing a Continuous Glucose Monitor I have discovered that I am very sensitive to carbs. I have found through consistent testing (food challenges while wearing the CGM) that MY BODY runs best on 25-30 grams of high fiber carbs with 20-25 grams of protein and 10grams of healthful (omega-3 & mono fats) PER MEAL. And I eat 3-4 such meals per day. I have lost weight, and feel great. There is evidence that insulin & glucagon hormones must be in balance for the body to produce Glutathione, the master antioxidant, VERY IMPORTANT, and not supported by long-term keto.
You’re absolutely right. I have a friend who is diabetic and is deteriorating rapidly. She can hardly see, has 20% kidney function, has had two heart attacks and a stroke yet she insists her doctors told her she should have 60 grams of carb per MEAL! Her a1c is sometimes 11, sometimes as high as 15!!! We end up in a screaming match if I try to convince her she shouldn’t be eating all those carbs. It’s sad.
[edit] Himalayan salt Himalayan salt is mined from the Salt Range mountains,[1] the southern edge of a fold-and-thrust belt that underlies the Pothohar Plateau south of the Himalayas. Himalayan salt comes from a thick layer of Ediacaran to early Cambrian evaporites of the Salt Range Formation. This geological formation consists of crystalline halite intercalated with potash salts, overlain by gypsiferous marl and interlayered with beds of gypsum and dolomite with infrequent seams of oil shale that accumulated between 600 and 540 million years ago. These strata and the overlying Cambrian to Eocene sedimentary rocks were thrust southward over younger sedimentary rocks, and eroded to create the Salt Range.[2][3][4]
I came back after several days of learning at Dr. Berg’s channel as if i am taking a final at his. Everything just suddenly makes much more sense today. I learned so much on say 9 types of fasting, hormonal hierarchy, mechanism of insulin, etc. i was/ is insulin resistance(didn’t realize, sub-clinical, and genuinely feels happy after fells sleepy after meals which i call it euphoria, and i didn’t realize how bad this symptoms was until it got lighter and i felt really shitty etc). and after omad today, the sugar high symptoms just went away. Nothing else but toooo full. This is such a happy result after one month of sticking to omad and water/ coffee fast (add in ketogenic diet along the way, and some alternative day eating when i think i can). Beforehand, my way of eating is when i feel too full and couldn’t take one extra bite, or when i start to have a headache/ sleepy, whichever comes first, and feels so guilty afterwards but do it over and over. When food touches my mouth, i just wouldn’t let go until toooo full. Now, i feel i have much will power, and bodily able to have a better control. Probably would do some variation on omad. I am healing, and losing weight. I suppose i switched to ketosis, and i have more fat to burn in the next several months. I suppose that i got ride of the extra water in my body when i switched from burning sugar to burning fat. Now, it is a new challenge which require more knowledge from the fasting/ nutrient world. Eating fat and protein, along with roughly twice volume of vegetable to get potassium does ease way to a long term sticking onto IF. I need to make some adjustment, but things looks good and making sense at least at the moment. It could be counterintuitive, and diverge from “main stream”, but truth is truth and it will emerge eventually.
Dear Dr Berg, I have been having a keto lifestyle and fasting for half a year, I only eat 1 meal per day and I have been adapted to this lifestyle without getting hungry constantly. Everything is going fine. However, I would like to supplement on this by adding 3 items into my daily life: 1) Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) 2) Keto Energy Capsule 3) Raw Wheatgrass Juice Powder (Lemon Flavor) However, I’m not sure the frequency and best time to take in the 3 items into my body. I’m not sure mixing the 3 items together and taking them into my body at the same time will be a good item or I should be taking them separately at different time of the day for maximum effectiveness. I’m thinking of having 1 teaspoon of ACV only before my meal and I will take the juice powder together with the Keto Energy Capsule together only in the morning. Or should I do all 3 items in the morning? Does mixing all 3 items together be not advisable? Would you be able to advise me on this matter? Thank you!
Please, could you give us some examples of good fat and what kind of carbohydrates are better to eat considering 20/50 grams per day? Thank you in advance for your answer.

I had an insane few minutes a couple days ago---I'm a T2D, but keep it 100% under control with keto lifestyle---and ate two cookies. Have paid for it for two days now, and won't do that again! If I ate the way I used to as recently as five months ago, I'd be dead inside another month. The weight gain I was experiencing was phenomenal, and I don't mean in a good way. Nope, no "experts" are being listened to, including my own otherwise excellent doctor (who wants me on either the S.A.D. or the D.A.S.H. diets). I'm staying on keto/OMAD, and have learned my lesson!
I'm confused about Omega-6. I've read that hemp oil is better than fish oil because it doesn't decrease fish population and has a greater balance of Omega 3/6/9. So should (pre)diabetics use fish oil as it doesn't have Omega-6?
