What Happened to Nokia?
Today’s episode is not about a flashy tech startup from Silicon Valley or San Francisco that was going to become a unicorn and failed. Nokia is a Finnish multinational corporation that goes all the way back to the 19th century and started with wood mills that produced mainly paper. After thriving years, Nokia found itself fighting to keep up with the web 2.0 environment, the deadly competition of the iPhone and the swift development of Android. Find out what happened in Company Forensics.

no nokia phones were amazing at the time i had a n900 it was great but the problem was the lag and lack of apps there were most of the major apps but it want even close to the android app store it was the soft were end of things that killed nokia and for the lag it was lagging a lot even out of the box the lag wasn't major in my n900 but you could really feal it in the N8 after couple of month of installing apps and normal use although the phones were high end even better then android and iphones at the time but it was lagging a lot .

The entire last section of this video is wrong. HMD global are not related to Nokia in any way other than licensing the Nokia brand for smartphone devices(Foxconn owns the dum phone license) What you should have mentioned is Nokia's B2B business which makes it one of the largest telecoms equipment makers with revenues of over $25 billion in 2019. This is the Nokia which exists today and not HMD. With revenue of over 25 billion and being listed as a fortune 500 company, Nokia is still a very large company. Most "What killed Nokia" videos fail to mention this and I thought you would. There is more to industry than creating consumer products

Would have been nice to include more about the various Nokia phones after the original ones with SNake, and why they were so successful, and also how you could get Windows mobile on Nokia devices for a while. I feel like this video left a lot out, I mean you jumped from the first mobile Nokia made with Snake to the 2007 introduction of the iPhone.

I can't speak for other parts of the world, but it actually took until the iPhone 4 here in Sweden before smartphones de-throned their keypad equipped ancestors. It wasn't until the early 10's you saw an iPhone, HTC or Samsung Galaxy more often than a Nokia or Sony Ericsson.

Nokia was going downhill already before Microsoft but the final straw when Nokia appointed former Microsoft executive Stephen Elop as their new CEO. Elop worked as mole for Microsoft making decisions that decreased Nokia’s value so that it was cheaper for Microsoft to buy. Microsoft envied Apple's success with the iPhone. They were getting heat from stockholders They figured out it would be cheaper to buy a hardware manufacturer than to design and build a smartphone from scratch. They could have bought Motorola Mobility, but they didn't. Nokia was the obvious choice because it ran Microsoft's OS. If Microsoft had not bought Nokia, there is a fair chance Nokia would have gone to Android, leaving Microsoft shut out of the handheld space. The acquisition market is propelled by fear and greed. Both were at work in this case. After MS had bought Nokia, they didn’t know what they were doing and later gave up on the phone business altogether. Windows OS wasn’t working good enough in phones. Had Nokia adopted Android from the start, they would still be in phone business today.

I know from multiple former Nokia Developers that they were working on a very promising new mobile OS, but it was killed by Stephen Elop just a few months before launch. And MeeGo, their answer to iOS/Android got good reviews. But Microsoft forced the move to Windows and didn’t care killing Nokia in the process. And it looked like Nokia execs were headless and let Microsoft hijack the company.

I had Nokia N9 (the only phone released with Meego) and it was the best operating used on phones at the time. Today Android is definitely ahead, but at that time, it was amazing! You also had root access btw! Imagine that, having full control over your phones software without losing warranty?! I wish Meego would've survived as the third phone operating system 😔

@akumarx

I think you missed the bit that the ceo of Nokia was ex Microsoft. And that he went all in on Windows phone software to differentiate against the android. Also the tragedy is that many features of windows phone were typically too ahead of their time. Eg. Spotify Subscription music, which zune did first and now Apple copying live tiles. It’s all about timing and Microsoft is unfortunately very bad because they seem to be ahead of the curve (sometimes)

Not going into Steven Elop and not mentioning Meego OS makes this video rather a failure (in an otherwise absolutely excellent channel) Meego was very promising and would have given Nokia a big step ahead of the competition, unfortunately it was delayed and when it was ready it was killed by Steven Elop who acted like a secret agent for Microsoft. In the end the shareholders killed Nokia by putting Steven Elop in charge.

The problem with the iPhone is that the software is proprietary meaning Apple doesn't give it's OS to OEMs like Google does with Android. As a result, you don't have a choice of devices to your their software on, you are forced to use Apple's hardware and Apple doesn't make its apps for Android limiting it to just their phone

I had a couple of Nokia phones in my teen years. 5210 was my first color phone. I also had a Nokia 7260. Everyone I knew had a Nokia, and almost everyone had a different type of Nokia. Their portfolio of products was immense. In the mid-2000s, Sony Erricson was on the rise with their phone/MP3 players combo. I liked those phones too. When you look back, the 2000s were an excellent time for mobile phones, not from the tech point of view but from the sheer amount of different and funky designs. It seemed like everyone had a different phone, and they all were very unique. Now every phone is basically the same-just a big rectangular screen.

@Mart-Man
@Mart-Man 4 года назад
@@chumajamesnxele106 I would guess the stagnation comes as a parcel of growth and optimized production chains. The same is happening with current smartphone companies. Nothing really revolutionary has been put on the market for 10 years. Just incremental improvement that comes from the general progress in the industry. During the day, my old iPhone 4 is just as capable of fulfilling all my needs as my iPhone X.

One of the main reasons I always preferred Nokia over Sony Ericsson or Motorola during pre-iPhone era, was the durability and modular build. A nokia phone was always a bunch of separate parts that would snap together or held with screws. I once dropped a Nokia 1610 from about 70 feet onto thin office carpet and it "exploded" into pieces. But I was able to assemble it back together and it worked perfectly. Now, if you drop an iPhone 3 feet, the screen shatters. LOL

BASIC was from a Computer Lab at Dartmouth, DOS was from QDOS by an Engineer from Seattle which in turn was a rip off of CP/M by Gary Killdall, GUI and mouse was invented by Xerox Parc which was ripped off by Steve Jobs to which he showed Bill Gates who then made sure he brought out windows before System 1.0, Microsoft's Internet Explorer was there to compete against Netscape Navigator, IE was in fact produced by MIT and Gates bought the Product formally known as Mosiac to try and catch up to Netscape, he famously said 'The internet was a fad' before purchasing Mosaic, Video game consoles had long been around before the Xbox, Phones have long been around before the purchase of Nokia and the Zune had already been late to the party because of the Ipod. Microsoft rarely ever has an Original thought, If there is a market they want to get into they buy something out and pretty much role the dice, they aggressively push the innovator out or fail miserably.
@Locutus
@Locutus 4 года назад
Sounds like Apple. Apple Silicon was basically a company Apple bought, and built it up over the years to designing its chip designs gradually. Apple licences ARM for their processors. Apple bought Next so they could build their new OS on it, and that is built on Unix. Microsoft built Azure from the ground up. Microsoft Office is very good, and I can see why it's been king for 20 years. It built Bing from nothing. Microsoft and Apple, have an equal history of buying , and improving, existing software to fill gaps in their product lines. Both companies are evolution rather than revolution.

i bought a nokia phone with windows 8.1 OS and I can tell you it was....great. 10x better gui than android or IOS. in my opinion microsoft didn't kill nokia, they used it as an opportunity to get a share in the phone industry but they failed because of people way of thinking: microsoft bad, mac good (even if it's clearly not the case). nokia's issue in my opinion is that they were using symbian and you can really see after 1-2 years the phones were becoming extremely slow. they focused mainly on design without thinking about the basic.

Imagine playing games like assassin's creed, Prince of Persia, asphalt, NFS and BIA especially in NGAGE) and after couple of years I heard they announced windows phones when I heard it at first I thought it Will be same as PC but when it arrived I was completely disappointed. Nokia killed itself, first in the feature phone business in big emerging markets like India when it did not introduce the dial sim feature in those phones. Then in smartphones it kept on sticking with Symbian which was not architecturally upto the task. Later Windows came up and it was refreshing but the app eco system never took off. Also the entry level phone Nokia Lumia 510 did not have a front camera. So budget customers were forced to move to Android.

The only problem with the Windows Phone Nokia and later Microsoft devices was the graphical user interface. I had a Microsoft phone. I liked it, it was fast, and even the UI wasnt bad in itself, but it was just so different and unappealing at first sight its crazy. Way too much flat design and something that people arent used to so its unintuitive. Just look at Windows 8, same sh*t, the GUI killed it. If it were like Microsoft's launcher for Android devices now, it would have been a great success. The no apps problem would have also solved itself with a nice GUI, more people would have bought it even without the apps, so developers would have started supporting it

You completely missed the part about the hostile takeover of Nokia by Microsoft... Also, it's an exaggeration to say that iPhone and Android broke Nokia, it didn't! First they already had Symbian which was like halfway to a smartphone, and then they came up with their own operating systems Maemo and later Meego. I had both Nokia N900 (with Maemo) and Nokia N9 (with Meego) and at the time, both these operating systems were better than iOS and Android! No if Nokia would have continued with these, they would have survived much better, maybe not on the top, but they wpuld have remained a player. Unfortunately what broke them was the new CEO, who was a previous Microsoft employee, who pushed for the decision to sell to Microsoft. This is a schoolbook example of a hostile takeover by another company.

Would you kindly stop with this "premiere" bull*? My feed is for videos to watch, not for videos that come up in next 24 hours. You are cluttering my subscriptions with this crap. I've seen other channels do this and as a result, more and more of my feed is spammed with videos I can't watch. Wouldn't be a problem if these can be filtered out, but I will have to start unsubbing if this keeps up.

@@Burning7One If it's one channel it would be fine, but I'm seing a trend. Also the feed is for on demand content, that is the whole point of the feed. I dont look on my feed to say 'hmmm, I wonder what I'm going to watch tommorow'
@Quarky_
@Quarky_ 4 года назад
The trend is because apparently the ad revenue is higher when streamed. The platform promotes "live" stuff over regular videos. So creators who don't create streaming content, they are also trying to get a piece of the pie by "premiering". At least that's my understanding :-/
@FrantisekPicifuk
@FrantisekPicifuk 4 года назад
@@Quarky_ well, I gotta admit it makes sense. At least it would explain why most of premiered videos in my feed aren't "live" but rather pre records. Still pisses me off tho.
