How movies teach manhood | Colin Stokes

When Colin Stokes' 3-year-old son caught a glimpse of Star Wars, he was instantly obsessed. But what messages did he absorb from the sci-fi classic? Stokes asks for more movies that send positive messages to boys: that cooperation is heroic, and respecting women is as manly as defeating the villain. (Filmed at TEDxBeaconStreet.)

When movies make strong female characters, somehow they also strip them of their feminine traits. Because apparently you can only be strong if you're masculine. Strong women aren't just those who fight bad guys, but those who have a kind and warm heart- the mothers, the nurses, the grandmas.

@haze No they are not. Concepts of masculinity and femininity may vary by culture, but every culture has male and female genders (there's a reason gender identities outside of male and female are called 3rd Genders). Besides, with the effects of Americanization, globalisation, cultural assimilation and cultural appropriation, Japanese popular culture is highly influenced by Western viewpoints anyway.

Any ghibli movie has a compelling female character not because they are a strong FEMALE character but a STRONG female character. They are good because they are based on actual women in his life, they have strengths, they have weaknesses. They have fears and are vulnerable. To me what makes a good character is not by how strong they are, but about how human they are, if they are someone who can cry, who can laugh, who can face adversities not by they’re strength alone but with the help of others around them whether it be literal or metaphorical.

@@NIHIL_EGO I'd also like to point out there were actually honorable knights because as it turns out our ancestors were not always the cartoonishly evil, curled mustache villains that they're made out to be. Sir William Wallace took measures to bring about the end of feudalism, one of which was establishing a national army. The Knights Templar gave up their inheritance and possessions to serve and protect others. One of their most famous battles was the Last Stand of Acre where 30 brother knights fought to the last man against an entire Saracen army to protect women and children. (look it up on Real Crusades History) I'm an American and I fully believe monarchy and serfdom were wrong and all mankind has equal value. That being said I firmly believe people were always people, good and bad, and if you do any reading or other investigating of the Middle Ages you will find there were plenty of honorable and incredibly courageous knights in real history. I remember, when I was little girl, I wanted to show my younger brother one Disney movie about princess. And then my grandma came, and she was very angry at me. She said "This cartoon is for girls, not for boys". And I didn't understand, it was the good movie, and the main heroine was a good person, why can't my brother learn something from her? After all, I watched many movies and read many books where the main character was male, and nothing bad happened.

sigh.. that's because things that represent the male side are considered as positives but things that represent women are often taken as negative learning experiences or insults. For ex. a very common way to insult a person, a girl or boy is to tell them, "You do so and so like a girl." Women themselves use this insult because it is so deeply ingrained in them that their gender itself is a matter of shame.

The princess in Shrek was not there as eyecandy or as a helpless damsel in distress. Sure, she was litterally a princess trapped in a castle with a dragon, but she also showed that she could handle herself, like ***** pointed out. I don't think she was trapped there because women are helpless without men, she was trapped there because that was her role as a fairy tale character. All the characters in that series seemed to be stuck to their roles. The story is litterally about how the big bad ogre came to deviate from that role.

Because almost all media portrays it as one way: Men saving women. It is very rare to see the other way around, which is why it's upsetting. It is exactly as you said. Men saving women isn't a problem. Women saving men is totally fine too! The problem is the fact that social norms always portray it as men's role to specifically protect women. You may say that Spiderman is a superhero and is the most capable character in the movie to save the woman. This begs the question: Why make the superhero male in the first place then? While female superheroes do exist in higher numbers now, I don't think anyone can argue that comic book heroes were a medium that specifically targeted males. Your points are logical and valid, but they fail to see past the curtain that is media. *Content creators create media with a specific audience in mind as well as their own set of values and beliefs (media is not created in a vacuum)*. I think this is the main problem with getting the point across to other people is that the issue is not portrayed in an industry sense. They have full control of everything within the medium including storyline and character design. They get to decide who gets to be a hero and who gets to be a victim. They get to decide which character gets the most airtime. *Again, men saving women isn't a problem and neither should be women saving men. The problem is that the majority of content creators (eg. movie makers and game makers), portray the role of hero (male) and victim (female) as binary.* From my understanding, this has been slowly changing over the recent years, but these stereotypes are still fairly prominent. Also food for thought about your last comment: "They should be happy that the media is teaching boys to look out for them" What if you turned it to something like: "Men should be happy that media is teaching girls to be reliant on their man" (eg. all the old princess movies) Do you see something wrong with these implications? Men need to look after their women? Women are weak and must rely on their man? It also makes for extremely boring storytelling as you can often tell from miles away what is going to happen because these Hero's Journey stories are so, so, so common.

Even though she does it in the coolest way possible, Dipper is pretty hurt by that, but in the end he learns how to deal with it and they become friends for life, who can accomplish amazing things together. At the end of the series Dipper tells this powerful line to Gideon - another character who falls for Dipper's sister, but unlike Dipper he tries to force his way to love. Dipper says " Gideon listen to me. If I've learned anything this summer, it's that you can't force someone to love you. The best you can do is try to by someone worthy of loving."

He isn't afraid to show his emotions of fear or sadness, as he openly cries when he finds out there's no cure for his curse and that he's going to die. He doesn't complain, sulk, or whine about it when he realizes it's not something he can prevent, but continues to work for a good cause though it pits everyone against him, he won't personally get anything out of it, and his efforts are unrecognized or mocked- because it's simply the right thing to do. He helps other people, even saving the lives of total strangers and his enemies who betrayed and tried to kill him, without looking for reward or thanks. When he is thanked, he accepts it humbly and says that it was what anyone would have done. He's thankful for everything he has and never once complains, even when he loses everything but the clothes on his back and is matter-of-factly told that he's going to die a slow and painful death. Despite all this, he's still human and you can see his sadness, fear, and anger throughout the story. I feel pretty grateful that my dad introduced me to this movie and that I had Ashitaka as a role model when I was little. Even now, he continues to be a role model for me, though I'm not a man. He always represented to me what all people should be, not just men. Edit: Edited because RU-vid keeps adding double spaces whenever I write paragraphs.. -_-

I'm a guy and Samus, the female protagonist of the Metroid series, is one of my favorite characters of all time. She's an independent, no-nonsense woman with a strong sense of justice. She has compassion for the downtrodden because she herself has experienced great and tragic loss. And in a galaxy full of corruption and deceit, she holds fast to her convictions, even if that means rebelling against a corrupt government (in Metroid Fusion, she discovered that the Galactic Federation was creating and experimenting with weapons of mass destruction in the form of the series' titular Metroids. Not only that, but that they were attempting to weaponize a creature referred to as "X," a parasite so dangerous that it could destroy every civilization in the galaxy. As if that wasn't bad enough, these things escaped captivity onboard the space station orbiting the planet from which they acquired the specimens and killed all of the scientists on board. Even worse was the fact that the GF hired Samus, who had great trust and respect for them, to clean up their mess in an effort to cover everything up. Samus was understandably upset by this betrayal and the immoral actions of the GF that had led up to it and so set the station on a course to impact the planet below, destroying the uncontrollable bio-weapons aboard along with all the relevant data concerning their creation. By doing this, Samus made herself a criminal in the eyes of the GF to save everyone in the galaxy who would be helpless against the X). As an American, I heavily identify with this.

I like how he explains how his daughter likes Glinda and Obi-Wan towards the end. It's not so much the gender of the main characters when kids watch... I believe it's so much more than that. Kids are smart and pick up on characteristics, qualities and behaviours--Glinda and Obi-wan were both clever, caring and courageous. Movie nights for children, at least for me in the future, should have a healthy mix of quality movies containing strong characters of both genders. Not only this, parents should also have healthy discussions with the children about what they just saw... there should always be taught media awareness and critical thinking!

The best part of this movie for me wasn't the romance, although I thought it was executed extremely well. I loved how they got to know each other and that Rapunzel got to experience freedom instead of getting married right away. The best part was seeing two people learn who they want to be and what they want in life by listening to a different perspective. I was pleasantly surprised to see them talk about their pasts, dreams, hopes, fears, interests, etc. and challenge the other's ideas throughout the film. Once he started to care about her, then he put her happiness and well being first. He wanted her to be happy and fulfill her dreams. She deserved a far better fate than to be chained up and dragged around by her "Mother" as a source of youth for the rest of her life.

Avatar the last Air bender not only passes the Bechdel Test but makes it look ridiculous. All of the girls are strong without sacrificing their femininity. The Kyoshi Warriors, for example, are made up of only girls, who with make-up and long dresses have no problem taking on men. Then there are the boys. The main character is Aang, a pacifist, vegetarian, flower-crown-wearing, jewelry making boy. Who learns how to control his emotions, especially when they are riding high. He is in the midst of a 100-year war and refuses to kill anyone. The characters talk about romantic interests, sure, but that is never the main conversation. It gives so many people someone to look up to. It allows you to choose whom to idealize.

When I have kids, I'll never show Disney movies to them until they are old enough to find them by themselves, I'll only show them Hayao Miyazaki movies. Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, Porco Rosso, Castle In The Sky, Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind, Ponyo, The Wind Rises, and my personal favorite after Chihiro's movie, Kiki's Delivery Service. That will show to my son a world in which he has to respect and admire woman's qualities, strengths and help them in their weakness; my daughter will learn to be strong, but not so that she loses her femininity and dreams in the process. They will see that the wold has bad days, and people sometimes can be horrible to each other and to nature, but love and friendship and understanding can be stronger, teamwork, and qualities like that. They'll learn to love nature, respect it, and take care of it (It's such a big theme in most of his movies). But what I find more important, they'll learn to always keep imaginative and positive, the world is a hard place to live, but you dont have to make it harder. I don't like most Disney movies, thankfully, Miyazaki has provided enough material to show great female characters, good boy characters, and words of imagination and a degree of realism; maybe some of his movies are a little bit scary, but I also dont want my kids to be in front of a T.V until they have learned enough from having contact with real people, so they'll be old enough when exposed to those universes.

Ew, you want to be one THOSE parents, a former (or current) weaboo imprinting only your likes and interests upon your children. Listen, I love Miyazaki's films, but there is nothing wrong with Disney movies. If your children start believing that they're oppressed or that boys are big mean jerks, the problem is you as the parent, relying on movies to raise your children. My brother watched all the Disney movies with me when we were little, and he's about as masculine and respecting of women as they come. You know why? Because my parents relied on their parenting skills and little talks with him (and me) as he grew instead of relying on animated movies to be his parents. And I never grew up thinking that boys were mean jerks who were only ever villains, and never though that I HAD to be a pretty, ultra-feminine princess (although I liked to pretend I was and am still feminine). My parents and playing with other children and going to school taught me to be stronger and how to work with others as a team. I turned out fine and am on a clear route to joining the Intelligence community. Also, learning takes place throughout an entire lifetime; not only when children are small.

If you don't want to show your kid Snow White or Cinderella, i can understand- they were fair for their respective times but wouldn't really count as good Disney flicks today. But what about the films of the Disney Renaissance, like Beauty and Beast, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pocahontas, or Mulan? all Disney flicks with fleshed out female leads and fleshed out stories. What about the more modern ones, such as the Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Brave, or Frozen? Just a thought.

The themes that always resonated with me were finding purpose larger than yourself, venturing out, encountering various types of new people (men, women, droids, wookies, etc), learning to work together, facing difficulty together, and winning for the greater good. Star Wars is about purpose and mission. The ceremony scene was always about gaining honor to me, gaining honor for aiming at a higher good in your world and succeeding.

Can I just say that Star Wars does teach teamwork and cooperation with women? Princess Leia is a leader of the Rebellion along with Mon Mothma. Princess Leia got herself, Luke, Han, and Chewbacca into the trash compactor. She gave Han, Luke, and Chewbacca medals of honor because of their courage and heroism, which is something that is done in our society. Padme from the prequels is a leader who needed some protection like all politicians do, but on Geonosis she was able to get out of her chains and climb up to the top of the pillar so she hopefully would not be killed. Luke does not just go off to join an army and overthrow the government (which is a tyrannical one by the way), he learns to work with Han Solo, who he was skeptical about working with in the beginning. Moral of the story: make sure you actually analyze the story and the characters before you use them to prove a point.

Being a good person is always a great thing to learn. Your first statement is very true - I believe people should be brought up in a similar way regardless of their gender. However, to imply everyone shares this mentality or that the 'playing field', as it were, is equal, is just incorrect. Boys and girls should be taught that an inequality exists (universally) between men and women, and that's wrong and /should/ be rectified.

@David DotExe it's not about an agenda. Why are people stuck on folks having an agenda? It's not that they're thinking "I will enforce gender roles! " It's the times when someone tells a little boy that he shouldn't play with baby dolls, even though he might be a dad one day. It's telling a little girl that she shouldn't play in the dirt. It's getting mad if your boy wants a pink shirt. It's not letting a boy watch Shimmer Shine or Disney princess movies. Random stuff like that.

@Breakdown Benjamin 1. Made up ideas especially stories teaches abstract ideas which is not good for the simple mind of a child, everything is up to the interpretation of who is delivering the information w/c usually results to something similar to propaganda. Experience teaches proven & tested ideas on which works & w/c doesn't. Example: My father taught me that my mother could handle our finances better that's why she's the one doing it, rather than she's handling the finances because she's a woman & these stories show how great women are with being a leader & leaders are supposed to be good with money. 2."Regardless of gender" works if you teach it to a child. My father taught it to me & I have never had an issue with my female bosses or any female authority ever. Even now my wife would call me more of a feminist rather than others who call themselves such. If you find sexism predominant, it's really because of parents teaching kids one gender is better than the other. Baby boomers teaching boys becoming the alpha & millenials teaching girls the same.

I think it did a good job showing growth on both sides, Poca’s father most of all as he made the decision that he would not start the violence. John Smith undergoes a similar transformation and finds that love and understanding for all people should trump violence. It shows that white men came onto THEIR land and abused their higher forms of technology. That message was important and the story was altered for young audiences, but it did not treat the subject lightly or ignore the historical implications and effects of European settlement. No tarshil2020, this was virtue signalling to the the max. The very fact that this man thinks that Star Wars is merely a movie about a guy going out and shooting bad guys is, at the very least, frustrating. That's leaving out the fact that he only described A New Hope, cutting out 2/3's of the whole story, and Luke's character development. He was basically saying that the fact that most movies having a male protagonist is a bad thing. There are tons of flaws with his argument here, right down to how he described The Wizard of Oz as a story with more depth and moral lessons than Star Wars. It's asinine and shows that he has no idea how to write a good story or character. From what he's saying, he is suggesting that most of these characters, Mike, Sully, Woody, Buzz, Luke Skywalker, would be better simply by being female. It would appear that he doesn't like these "war movies" simply because the depict violence as a character's means of progression through the plot, and fair enough you can make a decent story with a meaningful moral without violent conflict, but I sincerely doubt his son would be as interested in those types of movies, that's just not what boys and men are into. And I guarantee that this guy would say how that fact is a bad thing, thus pointing out the fact that his only purpose for this talk is to try to emasculate men. And the mere fact that he thinks that the virtuous Luke Skywalker (the ones for the original trilogy, not this crappy, depraved old Luke from the newer movies), who put his life on the line to save an entire galaxy from an oppressive totalitarian empire, isn't an embodiment of moral virtue is, frankly, quite preposterous.

She was tough, resourceful, courageous, fighting alongside all of the heroic men (and often better than them at it). She withstood torture. She was politically powerful, and instrumental in the success of the Rebellion. She was the one who was carrying the stolen plans for the Death Star. There were other female characters who were leaders in the Rebellion, as well (Mon Mothma, for instance). While the films were very guy-heavy, the heroics were not left to the guys alone.

My problem with this is, it took me a couple times rewatching the movies before I actually understood what Leia's role was in the rebellion, because besides a few exposition dumps, the majority of what Leia did was call for help and get saved by the men. Even when she fights back against her captors, she usually isn't trying very hard until the guys are there to help. Maybe it's a strategy to wait til they can make a distraction, but what if they never came? Would she have found a way out on her own? I'm not sure. I really wish they had explored her potential as a Jedi more. How come Luke was the only one to get training when it's explicitly stated that Leia had potential too? Why was it Lukes job to kill Darth Vader? Isn't he just as much Leia's father as Lukes? As far as female protagonists go, Leia is pretty good, but I would never hold her up as a great example of how to represent women in movies.
@RainAngel111
@RainAngel111 9 лет назад
***** She could've done something. I know if I was captured and had no evidence that anyone was coming after me, I certainly wouldn't be waiting around. If Luke were in the same position as Leia (probably with more clothes on too) I can tell you he wouldn't have had to wait. Also that doesn't answer my question of why Leia never considered becoming a Jedi. It's not uncommon for there to be female Jedi so there was not very much reason for her not to be. At most, they said that if Luke failed, then Leia would fill his role. In other words, she'd have to go clean up his mess, instead of being the first choice.
@MisterBones2910

RainAngel111 Again though, what could you have done? It's frikkin' space-jail. In a titanic planet destroying weapons-station crewed almost entirely by soldiers. You are wearing noblewoman's robes and weigh 150 lbs soaking wet. Here's the thing, first of all, Leia was wearing plenty of clothes for all but one scene. She wasn't being rescued, she was assassinating a high-priority target. Though you might see it as in bad taste, both literature and real life commonly have concubines assassinating their "owners" because they're the easiest people to get close enough. Second, George Lucas. George Lucas, George Lucas, George Lucas. He had no idea at all when producing the fuzzy outline of his story that Leia was to be Luke's sister until a focus group decided they'd rather ship her and the nerf-herder together. This was also before "medichlorians" (or however it's spelt) so there was no reason to suspect Leia was force-sensitive because there were no scanners. It was assumed to be a hereditary trait at that point. They were also Jedi _Knights._ Regardless of whatever politics you want to bring into it, knights were male. It was entirely likely that the hierarchy of the (then unnamed) Jedi council was assumed to disallow females for religious or traditional reasoning. It's a story, no reason to get mad at imaginary inequality. Lastly, if old George's vision (largely ripped from Frank Herbert's Dune novels anyway) had Luke both be in the lead role and being the one who won in the end, what's wrong with that? There's no reason to force the man to use a non-traditional narrative, (chosen one fails, unassuming friend rises to the challenge) *_especially_* when that would likely not have done as well at the box-office at the time. StarWars is much beloved by average people because it's a sci-fi that you don't have to think too hard about.

I don't know if anyone will be here to read this anymore but let me put this here. The kids show Teen Titans (2003-2006) was a great example of this. The female and male characters were perfectly balanced and both sides saved each other an almost equal number of times. The female characters, StarFire and Raven were opposites, where Starfire was the goofy but strong and respectful, kind and enthusiastic kinda hero and Raven was serious but positive and more like a character which is like 'there is more than what meets the eye'. Beast Boy was goofy along with Starfire and Robin was serious as the leader and Cyborg was pretty balanced out. I never saw the creators make the girls/woman overly 'masculine' but they were unique in their own way. There was this episode, where Raven's father Trigon appeared and Raven's powers which came from her father were taken away and Robin had to convince her to not lose hope. Raven atlast defeated him on her own, which is pretty much a rarity in movies. So yeah, pretty sure we need women like these more, because everyone including me loved them.

@Batosai11489 5 лет назад
He didn't talk about Spirited Away because Chihiro is actually a feminine hero. American media doesn't really value that concept because for some reason, masculinity has been massively overvalued. The primary problem with feminism (apart from the socal-constructionist, neo-Marxist, man-hating aspect) is that it paradoxically devalues femininity. Feminism is entirely consumed with elevating females who exhibit masculine characteristics and devaluing masculine characteristics in men. The inherent value of femininity, which they should be advocating for, is completely overlooked. It's one of the greatest indicators that feminism is actually a corrupt movement whose goals are self-serving rather than noble. Spirited Away as well an many other Hayao Miyazaki movies should be their models. Not Frozen. Frozen is certainly not pro feminine. It is about how masculinity in women can replace masculinity in men. Part of the reason that I hate feminism is because I actually think femininity is inherently valuable (of course, I prefer femininity to be present in women and rather dislike it in men but that's another argument).

Brave had a big part in that. Feminism got society out of the "a woman's place" box and there's still more to do, BUT it was mostly about valuing masculine traits/roles and hating on feminine ones. Time for society to grow into valuing both equally and valuing both women AND men being their own mix of the two. E.x, boys are still expected to shun everything girly. I don't think whether it's her field or it's not her field. Just because you're born into a certain body doesn't mean you have to act like what's expected of you. Also, women who ARE strong don't live according to society's expectations. And being strong isn't about showing off your muscles/body. Being strong is a statement in itself. And not all women want kids. I do, when I grow up to be in my early or late thirties. But as for my main goal, it's ONLY my career, in my early 20s or even earlier. And, MY PARENTS HAVE SAID SO, ASKED SO, AND IMPOSED SO, INCLUDING MY FATHER.

oh, that movie is so sweet! Love it! Lord of the Rings doesn't pass the test either, but nobody can deny that it's a great series (that quite accuratly describes how passive women are if you pick a medieval setting, so...). What is concerning is the lack of balance I guess? That for every movie that fails this test there isn't one that would pass it. But all in all it really should come down more to quality, really. Because regardless of gender, anyone (kids included) would identify more with a wellwritten character in an interesting story...

He always advocated for friendship, empathy and understanding towards others over violence, being the last source if it was meant to protect the ones he loved and cared about. I admired him the most of all characters, often being kind and trying to comunicate even with his enemies to reach agreements. I don't understand why there is so much frustration with the Bechdel Test in the comments section. It's not a test to determine whether a movie is bad or not, or a movie is sexist or not. It's just testing simple representation.Someone complained in the comment section that the movie industry shouldn't have to be forced to pass the Bechdel Test. What? It's so simple! To pass, the movie would just have to have at least two women, who communicate in some way, and not talk about men....that's easy! Women make up half the population and some movies can't even have more than one? Or have the two or more women talk? Or have them discuss something other than men?If it's an action movie, it would pass the Bechdel test if there were just two women thrown into the masses of men, who talk to each other about the weapons they'll be using the battle or whatever. BOOM! It passes! Was that really so hard? They could even just be background characters! Who said they need to be main ones?The test only asks that we represent women in media so that the movie doesn't suggest men reproduce asexual and the women in those movies are more than just breeders.
@Oicurmtoyoy
@Oicurmtoyoy 8 лет назад
+Jay Writer What if it's in a setting, such as a men's prison, in which they logicically would be no women? Like Shawshank Redemption Or how about the military, especially historical ones? How about movies that are intended to feel isolated, and thus contain only a few main characters, with any others talking exclusively about those characters? Or what if everyone is always talking about the main character, who happens to be male? What if it's specifically about being the only woman in a certain place? Like the first women being allowed into university. Mulan, for example, is all about how a woman perceives masculinity, but only arguably passes (if the conversations about marriage don't count as about a man). If you cut those out, would it provide any less female representation? What if it has minimal or no dialogue? Granted, this more applies to arthouse movies than Hollywood, but still. Yes, there are easy ways to shoehorn in a pass, but they don't add anything. How would two women talking about their weapons provide any real representation? Many argue it wouldn't, and add the "they must be named" rule to the Bechdel test, because doing that is really adding noting just for the sake of passing. Of course, this isn't taken super literally. An important character, who's name is never revealed on purpose would be counted, whereas background characters who's names were awkwardly blurted out to get around this wouldn't. the point is, to pass this test you'd have to put women in a bunch of positions where they don't belong, either because it doesn't make sense for females to be present, or because it doesn't make sense for that specific added character to be there. Either that, or add nothing, confuse the more astute viewers who'll think it means something, and take credit for passing whilst entirely missing the point. In fact, female characters will suffer, as a group, as they only exist to check a box. They'll be tokens, not characters. So yes, it is easy to pass. Meaningfully, not so much. Also, plenty of media aimed at women doesn't pass the reverse Bechdel test (that's just replacing women with men in the test). And plenty of romcoms don't pass either. In the end, a movie is no better for passing this test, and no worse for failing, and the same is true if you reverse the genders. Forcing, or pressuring, creators into compromising their artistic vision only makes things worse, and doesn't add anything.and often takes away. Creators should be putting in female characters because they want to, not because they have to. And when they do, why is only one not enough? Some people define themselves by their actions.

Mulan is my favourite movie of all time, i know every word by heart and I love it to death. Yes, she pretends to be a man and is surrounded by them, but it's not her gained manly strength or the male support she got that defeated the huns, it's her brain and mind. And she is far from perfect. Unpunctional, not shy or subservient, sloppy and outgoing. But she is strong, supporting, friendly, respectful, clever, considerate, ambitious and humble. In the end, it's a woman who leads professional soldiers and wins and gets an offer to work for the emperor, but she doesn't forget her roots and becomes blinded by success, that's why she goes back to her family to support them. Mulan is better than perfect (:

88pie88 It isn't just Disney princesses. He isn't saying to stop watching anything, but show the type of people that kids, more importantly sons, should be supporting and on their team. Because, though feminine praise is good, girls are such a heavy topic now-a-days that sometimes we forget to teach the boys. Both need to know how to live in this world without looking at gender roles, resorting to violence, being the solo act. Learning to look at a person based on, not what they are, but who they are.
@88pie88
@88pie88 10 лет назад
Dahlia Diaz gender roles are a thing of the past since the 80's sister. Women who want to take care of there family by establishing a house hold of culture is long gone. That is no longer a problem, rejoice. The violence thing is a family problem, not a boys or even mans problem. If they had parents who properly educated them on how to treat women they would of never thought of raising a hand to anyone let alone a woman. Since both parents are working, the kids are baby sat by the TV, or trashy teenagers, and get neglected and abused. My first move i watched when i was 2. terminator 2. it just came out, and i loved it, and still do. I was raised on watching action and cow boy movies. Not once i ever thought on hurting anyone but imaginary bad guys and Indians in my backyard. Want to get rid of violent men? make sure a parent is at home teaching them values. can be man or woman who cares, but why do we need to live in a society where we have to compete with our partner financially?
@smoothietastic3688
@smoothietastic3688 10 лет назад
+88pie88 Those were gender roles of the "ideal" era of American history. They may not be the same for today in our modern age, but they are still present. Girls like pink and pretty, boys like blue and action. And both you and I know that isn't the case with all children, but if you like at the "girl" or "boy" clothes and toy section, that's all you see. The same with men and women with how they are suppost to look. Women are to have a look of slim, curvy, sexy. Men are to look strong, clean, and handsome. Both are pressured to keep a certain image and that there is the meaning of gender roles. Look, I don't want to cause conflict, this video was to give information and do with it as you please and I will say the same about my comments to you. it depends on the genre. Some of the most sexualized females in Anime occur in the Shoujo (girl's manga) genre. As for female leaders, again, depends on the genre and the story, but two series that feature female leaders that I can think of are the Crest Of The Stars series (a character driven tale of a young princess finding her place in her world- and the leader of her world is a Queen- her grandmother) lots of women in power in that series. Another is the classic manga/anime Full Metal Alchemist- many of the women featured in the series are soldiers- the highest ranking solider featured in the story is a female Major General- and she is feared by damn near everyone who encounters her.

His daughter saw the wizard of oz at a young age and he celebrated her imagination and the movie itself. But when his son saw starwars at a young age, suddenly he questions what could be internalized and the serious ramifications a movie could have on ones developing psyche. I find the double standard lame and it undermines some of his points that I actually agree with. Way too much of this talk was focused on glorifying femininity and projecting their traditional values onto manhood, when femininity and masculinity are different; even across cultures people recognize that. Both sexes have wonderful traits and it is certainly possible and should be encouraged that they learn and grow from/with one another. Togetherness is imperative in this endeavor; taking ideal traits of one group and slapping them on another is not helping to celebrate how they are independently strong and different. This lecturer espouses that only enemies of women are worth fighting, that physicality should be devalued, and that overtly feminine traits are celebrated while traditionally masculine traits are problematic and indicative of/perpetuating the patriarchy.

He is saying that he wants both of his children regardless of their gender to have rolemodels with (for example) leadership qualities (Glinda and Obi-Wan), which is a tradionally male trait. And he points out that strong female characters are underrepresented, especially in media targeted towards boys, while strong male characters can be found in almost every movie. His second concern was that boys could learn that they have to fight or be violent to get what they want. It's not a double standard that he started to analyse what his kids were both watching simultaneously aka Star Wars.

“What do these characters (Obi-Wan Kenobi and Glinda) have in common, apart from the way they dress?” 1. They both are magic users. 2. They both lie. 3. They both get an uninvolved naïve character to defeat their enemy for them. 4. They both refuse to help said character get home at first, sending them off to see someone else rather.

@Alexander Covi What would be the good in that? Men can have movies just for them teaching them to be men; women can have movies catered to them teaching them to be women. Why make things equal when having the genders "specialize" in their respective roles has worked so well for so long? I think it's a really beautiful thing.

This is why I love Studio Ghibli, pretty much all of their movies are anti-war themes and they're cartoons that aren't made out to be strictly "boy or girl movies." They have strong female characters and compassionate male characters (Howl's Moving Castle, The Secret of Arrietty) who work together for their goal.

A lot of hot air in this one. He makes a lot of leaps of logic, and offers rigid baseless solutions. As someone else said, teach your children to value and respect others. Regardless of gender. I don't teach my kids to always look to join a team, but to look for the best solution to the problem, regardless of the path that takes them on.

***** And the Wizard of OZ is about a pair of women squabbling over a pair of shoes. All media, even modern media, fails the test of equality.

***** Thats not entitlement its a fictional love story. Feminists and women get upset over EVERYTHING about women. You know what, at least leia acted like a princess. Disney princesses these days dont even act like princesses. And women complain that men aren't chivalrous and dont treat them like princesses.

Hoo boy, there is a lot to unpack here. First of all, when you compare Star Wars and Wizard of Oz, yes, I imagine most people would prefer living in Oz than the Star Wars Universe, as the Star Wars Universe is beholden at regular intervals to either a phenomenally corrupt, bloated bureaucracy or a tyrannical dictatorship ruling over the entire galaxy. That is why the fighting needs to happen. You’re comparing two very different movies meant for two very different audiences. Wizard Of Oz is a fairy tale; it’s whimsical and charming with a simple moral at its center. Star Wars is a space opera, an epic. A great evil must be defeated, and as we’re shown by Luke confronting Vader, guess what, sometimes fighting isn’t the answer there, either. Luke’s compassion and forgiveness for his father is what ultimately defeats the Empire; of course, you would know that if you weren’t watching these movies with a heavy political lens, twisting it to suit your narrative. I pray for your children. You could do damage to both of them if you carry on like this.

One can also compare Wizard of Oz to Hansel and Gretel, where kids own their agency and burn a witch alive (and it is also at least a fairy tale to fairy tale comparison). But you would never hear a speaker ever say that? Or what about Red Riding Hood who guts an animal in revenge? Funny, how entire levels of comparison and symbology can be ignored in trying to create a narrative that only loosely links to morality for thunderous applause of a crowd that mostly is more likely to have forgotten everything you said a week later? Or in trying to use whimsical fairy tales and fictitious sci-fi epics as some sort of real-life leadership or management analogy or case study, considering that both are open to subjective interpretation that doesn't mean anything/can mean anything that anyone can possibly read into it, even if viewpoints can possibly contradict each other?

Also, if you look at the screen tests George Lucas did for Leia, he chose Carrie Fisher because she portrayed her as a strong leader. You see that throughout the original trilogy. She's a leader on Hoth and further on. She fought on the ground in the Battle of Endor. She may have been a princess, but she was a military leader too.

Manhood isn't about being masculine,badass,confident,and getting women. Its about being able to get up no matter how hard life hits,it's about being able and want to stand up for the weak,it's about being able to inspire and lead,it's about building the people around you up instead of tearing them down,it's about looking fear,death and darkness in the eye,it's about being able to be a beacon of light for your loved ones during dark times,about sitting alone and reflecting on your mistakes so that you will never do them again and instead make things better for you and those you care for.
