Thanks, that's a lot of great information. If I decide to plant sunflowers in the future I'm getting my friend that I sold both my drill and my two row planter to to come over and drill the field. He actually plants his dove field with the two row planter. I really appreciate the herbicide information as that will come in handy. So far this year on my field we plowed it March 21st, sprayed it with a 4% solution of glyphosate (4oz/gal) about 3 weeks later on April 10th, plowed it again 2 weeks after that on April 24th and had plans to spray again on May 15th but we've had no rain until this week and nothing was really growing in the field. I'm heading out there this weekend May 29th to spray again prior to planting the Browntop and Dove Proso millet on June 12th which is 82 days prior to opening day. Browntop takes 60-65 days and Proso takes 75 to 85 days for seed maturity. In having planted both in the past I've found that 70 days is more than enough time for both and by mid-August I should be able to start cutting strips for the next couple of weeks and burn in late August if need be. This next spray will be a 2% solutions mix of glyphosate (3oz/gal) along with 2,4-D which is Dimethylamine salt of 46.47% , also I have some Trimec for crabgrass it is made up as a 2,4-D with the following: dimethylamine salt - 6.42% Quinclorac - 2.13% Dicamba, dimethylamine salt - 0.60%. I'll likely use the Trimec for spot spraying patches of crabgrass that I spot coming up.
Have you ever thought of rotating with a cover crop or mixing a cover legume into the sunflower seed mix? Last year I experimented with adding Sunn Hemp into a section of Egyptian wheat I planted as a hide next to the dove field. The wheat next to the Sunn Hemp was noticeably taller. This year I mixed Sunn Hemp into the Dove Field seed mix in hopes that it adds Nitrogen as the sunflowers grow. My dove field is split into 4 sections and I'm considering rotating each section with solely Sunn Hemp. The Sunn Hemp attracts pollinators and is a neat looking crop.
Do you plant sunflowers in the same field year after year? If yes have you noticed any reduction in production by not rotating a different crop in occasionally? Thank you for this video. Our dove club in Emporia, VA has been planting Peredovik sunflowers for a number of years and I've been wanting to try the Clearfield sunflowers due to the extra weed control options. We particularly have problems with cocklebur and carolina horsenettle. This is extremely helpful. Thank you!
Ive seen it but not tried it. I went straight to electric fence and that worked great. Changing up crops in the field I cant protect. Thanks for following along!
So you went from prodevic to clear field? That's the stuff I was trying figure out when I commented and trying to help you. Also trying to figure out what plates to use for sunflowers, small corn plates are what I heard are best.
Correct! It is more expensive, but allows for better post emergent weed control aka Imazamox. They are also suppose to be more diseases resistant, etc. I do not plant on rows, so I know nothing about plate sizes unfortunately
I saw Pheasant's Forever is finally offering Clearfield seeds. Still just not worth it to me. Maybe someday I'll be able to justify the cost. Great video.
If you will change your Nitrosurf from 1 pint to 3 pints/acre, you will quadruple your head size...I have used the 3 pint dose on 1 acre for 2 years now and know that for a fact...i was shocked to see that u do use Nitrosurf seeing the size of your heads...try 3 pints/acre and watch the amazing difference
This is great, you’re saying don’t worry about the amount of product in solution but rather the amount per acre. 3 pints won’t burn the foliage if put in 40-50 Gallons?
@@Yellowlab247_NC_Outdoors i run 3 pints of Nitrosurf in 30 gallons of water with my post...30 gallons, I have to make 4 passes...i read that u only have to use 15 gallons but I only use 30 and it didn't burn any, even the runts of the rows
