I've always figured the big profit maker for the farm was the social media aspect, and there is nothing wrong with that. Heck, there are people out there whose entire living is based on opening packages on RU-vid or playing games on Twitch. You've just come up with a profitable way to monetize, advertise and grow your farm.

I can definitely see keeping track of guard/pest control animals expenses. However, I believe he's teamed with a pet food company so feed would be $0.00 and he probably makes a decent profit from the ad revenue which would cover the rest. So that would be the social media grey area he talks about. If he didn't have the guard animals on social media he wouldn't get the ad revenue, but if he didn't have the social media he would have to pay the expenses. As for the rest, I'm small local business who shares some of these expenses and unless you're traveling on a daily basis over long distance fuel, maintenance and travel time is so inconsequential it's almost not worth keeping track of.
@gingerparr277
@gingerparr277 2 года назад
Inconsequential, hmmm, it’s costs money and I’m not factoring in his time, just the cost of driving the vehicle multiple trips , perhaps in a single week, is an expense. I’m retired on a limited income, that is my single largest expense, it isn’t for him, but it still remains a farm related expense, like feed and materials and power for the fence to keep out predators

If you want to bump up your numbers, you really have to expand the honey bee operation, I made as much as you did with 5 hives and a fraction of the work. maybe a few hours per week. between the honey, the wax, and the things you can make with the wax, not to mention selling bees (which I do not do) you can really make allot. And with your online presence, you have an advantage over all of your competition. and don't forget how much the bees will eventually assist your tree business with the pollination.

I was going to say the 4.81 doesn't take into account the social media income, as well. I am curious to see an income percentage breakdown (a basic pie chart, essentially) from sponsorships, and the different platforms. Absolutely no raw numbers, since I basically consider it to be personnel income, just saying you earned, for example, 31% from RU-vid, and 14% from sponsorships, etc. I'm always curious to see how places like IG and Tiktok would factor into that. Good to hear that you were able to be profitable. One aspect of this video that has me interested is the infrastructure costs over time as it seems in recent time that there have been a lot of infrastructure costs that can sink a business if not funded eventually from the farms activity as buildings fall apart tractors breaks. As The cost initially funded by other sources it seems hard to tell if certain projects contribute and make the business sustainable or if the farm is unsustainable. It can be hard to tell as the social media itself can fund the costs and can mask the results of profitability.

I wouldn't reduce low hatching/fertilisation to a curve ball. I hope it is, but it could also be structural, in the way you manage your flocks (it seems pretty random (but what can I say from a few youtube clips)). But I would definitively already study the issue now, so that you have a gameplan, if the issue succeed next year. Otherwise you are running behind, trying to fix the problem with more birds. The revenue comes from less (fewer breeders) is more (high fertility) :)

His personal hatching rates were bad, but the live eggs he sent out apparently had good hatching rates. The curve ball would be his new incubator, though I'm not sure if he ever figured out if it was the hardware or user error.

Morgan I will say that without the social media presence a lot of your farming operations would not happen. But as time moves on and you are able to gain confidence in the whole farming system then production revenue will increase and the dream will fulfil itself.

The poultry flock numbers need to be significantly higher to get that hourly wage up. It's the sad reality of it, you could also work on automation aswell. Automatic water & feeders, filling up one large feeder once a week vs everyday soon cuts down on time spent.

My God, this sort of accounting tells you that it's hard work all around. I always suspected that when other people dreamed about moving out to more rural areas for a taste of the "good life," their notion of taste did not probably include the level of hard work that's needed just to keep an operation going. Thanks for refreshing my perspective on my work.

gingko might be a pest in new england, pecan I don't think grows up here. Maple would be a good idea, as maple syrup has high demand and good profits.

While I understand the desire to keep the totals acquired via sponsors and social media off your P&L, you also said you wanted to share this information so that "you can see if you ran a small farm like the size of ours, what can you actually expect to spend in terms of expenses...and profit...". With this in mind, it would be beneficial for those watching this video as a means to determine what to expect if they knew how much was being spent (via sponsors and social media revenue) on equipment, maintenance, and any other expenses that money is used for. As you said, you have no loans or outstanding credit card debt, which isn't the case for most people. And by your own calculations, you're paying yourself under $5/hour. I think it's important for small business owners (or those intending to start a small business) to make sure they are accounting for a reasonable wage for themselves when looking at expenses. In your case, you have a day job which gives you additional income as well as the aforementioned lack of debt to pay off each month. I think this is why so many small businesses fail. The owners neglect paying themselves and thus have to use what should be profits to pay their loans or credit cards just to keep afloat.

I think you're spot on when talking about the future of farming in your area. It takes somebody with a fresh perspective who is willing to take risks and explore alternatives to keep small agricultural businesses viable in a changing world without being subsumed by industrial farming operations. I think realistically we need more small to medium farmers with more income streams to make things work in the future and a government (and local communities!) that supports small businesses. It's a hard job and time consuming, but inevitably fulfilling to be connected to the earth and the things that sustain us. You're right to be proud of what you've accomplished. Keep it up Morgan!
