Apologies ahead of time, if you came here looking for a tutorial video. The title is a bit tongue-in-cheek as I’m NOT a floral painter, but here are some ‘lessons’ I learned from practicing loose floral painting.
How not to paint loose flowers
5:19 #1 Relying too much on your reference
7:13 #2 Using brushes that are too small
8:44 #3 Putting in too much detail

Great video and great title! I coudn't NOT click. :) I think the biggest motivation you need to want to succeed at a painting, is that you must feel inspired to paint the subject you want. And if florals are not your jam, it just isn't! That said, I think you did a great job with the 2 versions. :) But we are our worst critics!

Hi Crystal! Thanks for the encouragement and for echoing that you must feel inspired by the subject - I used to try to force it thinking that it would come, but then it kinda sucked the joy out of practicing with watercolors. Also, your comments coming from a loose floral painter mean a bunch so thank you!

I appreciate your videos but especially liked this one because I’ve felt the same about painting flowers. Thank you.

I love them both but I understand your point. What I have in my head is not what comes out on the paper! I'm still trying to find my style and I'm grateful to those who take time to share with me. One thing I've found is that my favorite works are on "scrap paper"...I tried something, it didn't work, I use the back and mentally, I'm more free because it's just a throw away.

Oh my goodness, yes - some of my favorite “pieces” are little studies on scraps. I try to look back at them and figure out what I did (or what I didn’t do) to achieve that result.

This is a great exercise of learning! So many great and helpful tips. I appreciate artists who show the learning process. Thanks for sharing the link, too. We all have mentors and you are a very generous one.

@@SusanChiang the struggle is real sometimes. It helps to see you as a successful artist share your path and experience. And you have the best critic!

Thank you for doing this video. I enjoyed listening to your openness to learning and also i can relate to how when your invested attention changes your painting gets overworked. I get that a lot even when painting florals. I do find that my paintings are getting more detailed than i want and i m learning to unlearn the details😂 our art changes and evolves with us. Its awesome to hear your perspective - thanks for the shoutout! I have to say the negative painting in uour first lillies is on point. ❤

Oh, thank you for posting this!! I get completely lost in all the petals and details then overpaint to try to find my way back. So helpful to hear I am not alone!!!

You are definitely NOT alone! My brain is like “information overload” 😂

The second one is definitely much better, good job! I struggle with doing the same subject twice, it takes a lot of time before I can go back to something I tried painting and your video motivates me to try now some old less than successful paintings.

Thank you for the encouragement! I hope the inspiration to revisit some older paintings proves to show you how much you have come since the first attempt. I have found that even if I haven’t been practicing that specific topic, the accumulated experience comes together and it’s pretty cool to see how far we’ve come and what we’ve picked up along the way 😊

Hey, you did a great job. What is it with mothers and daughters? Mom’s seem even more critical of us than we do of ourselves. You have the right idea, practice to get better. But, just like @crystaltanart said, if you don’t enjoy painting flowers, it might just not be your thing.
@SusanChiang

I feel like my mom just says out loud what I'm thinking in my brain but it just sounds more critical when it comes from her haha... But yes, definitely agree - I've accepted that if I don't enjoy something, it might not be my thing!
