Here's the thing of kicking a banana tree. One, most people would do it on a dead or a dry banana tree. Two, because of how the banana trees are structured the more you kick it the more loose it becomes making it easier to kick and kick. It's one of those marital arts gimmick which looks more impressive than it actually is. I'm from Myanmar and dry banana trees aren't that sturdy. A kid can basically rip it apart with their hands. It's not like you're kicking an oak or a yew tree, which would be a completely different story entirely.

You know I had a trainer who was also a bit obsessed with lowkicks & training them hard, taking full power kicks on your legs as to "strenghten" them. But I heard later on that actually what happens is you don't just make them stronger against punishment but just the nerves I believe around there die off, why you will feel less pain or none if you get kicked in those places. Seems obviously not the way to do it, lol.

Get some books on ballet dancing or chorography or gymnastics because those are the best ways to really get that kicking like JCVD. Believe me, I've been wanting to kick like VD since I saw this movie as a kid and it wasn't until I bought books on those subjects and some savate stuff that my kicks went better. TKD would help too.

The reason why Van Dam taps his kicks is bc he can kick hard and with speed like that. It's not bc he doesn't understand. He's knocked people out going inside from a block outside. The guy is talented and legit.

@TomRiddle-hn2qz Год назад
He is talking about the movie, not Van Damme. The scenarist dictates that.
@granadosvm
@granadosvm Год назад
I think the "tapping" kicks are because his background is karate. In karate even when we kick hard and through the target, we tend to always return the kick through its launching trajectory. From what I've seen in kickboxing and muai-tai, the kicks go completely through the target and the recovery is just by lowering the leg and finding your footing for your stance. He would be doing it right if he was preparing for karate, but not for muai-tai.

Good video but that was not a banana tree he was kicking it was a young palm tree (royal palm) way harder and denser than a banana tree. Also his trainer (Xian)didn’t take him to the bar to test his skills for training. He took him there to get Freddy Lee’s attention and to prove to him that he is worthy of fighting Tong Po their Champion. Regardless it’s just a movie and you definitely pointed out some valid points. Good Video 👍🏼

@tominatorxx
@tominatorxx Год назад
100% true. I don't do any form of fighting, but I play badminton (only on regional competitions and tournaments, but still...) and can absolutely confirm that dancing is indeed perfect for cardio and coordination. It's ideal for learning to move fluidly and be quick on your feet (while at the same time be as efficient as possible in terms of energy usage). In terms of cardio, it's one of the most flexible ways to train that, because it's easy to adapt to a specific training regime and build up from there. Van Damme actually used to dance ballet when he was young. If you know the training regime of those dancers, you know how intense and demanding that kind of training is. It's insane.

Thank you for your great content, Gabe! About banana trees: Kicking these trees is actually not what most people think. The banana tree is not a true tree, but rather a large plant (it is technically an herb, as trees have hard, wood trunks). The structure of the banana tree is quite mushy and actually feels kind of nice when you give it a shin kick, as the plant stem sorta wraps around the shin. I kicked a dying banana tree in Hawaii.

Kick me if I'm wrong. But Van Damme, Chuck Norris and Cynthia Rothrock trained kicking in the same school in Korea; Moo Duk Kwan (one of the nine kwans that merged into Taekwondo. It's often refereed to as traditional Taekwondo or Tang Soo Do.) Confusingly the movie stars portray characters of kickboxning, muay thai, karate, kung fu or ninjas; but in actuality they use Taekwondo kicks. That's why he chambers his foot that much and use a straighter trajectory, and also explains the jumping spinning kicks.
@robinj6997
@robinj6997 Год назад
yea, I think he trained with Jhoon Rhee, they were good friends. For the other folk who reads this: Jhoon Rhee was the man who brought Taekwondo to America, he trained Chung Do Kwan which is another of the nine Kwans in traditional Taekwondo.

I remember watching an interview with director and he said it was suppose to be set in USA, and guy who played Eric was legit kickboxing champion at the time, so they had him be kickboxer, but for Tong Po he asked stuntman and fight choreographers what was the most vicious fighting style and they pointed Muay Thai, so he said perfect and it's why movie was changed to be set in Thailand rather then USA.

I think he's holding the pads like that just to look more like a novice. Van Damme films are all about being an underdog and then building himself into a hero basically. This is a guy who actually trained at Chuck Norris's house for a year and held pads for him etc. He damn sure held the pads correctly then. Alexio is a legend and I'm pretty sure he would have corrected him. One thing people gotta remember is that these films were made by an INSANE film company called CANNON. Van Damme was stuck in a 3 film contract with them and it was just a crazy time. So to have any bit of realism in them at all is an achievement.

You stated the low probability of landing more exotic kicks and therefore there’s not much need to train those other than for fun. I thought of the jumping side kick that George St. Pierre landed perfectly on Matt Hughes’s mid section; it was devastating. It made me wonder if (especially at top level competition) your opponent wouldn’t even expect something like that; making such techniques even more useful. Since people rarely train them because of the lower chances of them landing, they might also never expect them; making them much more effective than anticipated. It’s just something that came to mind when you mentioned it. Btw, thanks for the great content.

@sebfox2194 Год назад
I think it's because he stopped fighting competitively to focus on acting. He gained a lot more fame and money via that route, but he's not considered an elite competition fighter. Dennis Alexio, who played his brother in the film Kickboxer was a legitimate kickboxing World champion at the time. So the infrastructure was available back then if Van Damme had really wanted to focus on being a professional kickboxer. He just didn't choose that option.

@@garetht677 I like it and I totally agree .... Many many years later I worked as a nurse in an institution for the criminally insane , the take to the floor and sit on them was the most effective thing we ever did rather than chemical or mechanical restraints.

Not a kickboxes but trained in Kyokushin Karate. I'll never forget seeing my sensai split kick someone in a sparing session. Closest i'll ever be to seeing a Van Dame split kick be used in a real fight. lol

He was holding the pads like that because his character was not a trained fighter as later on we know in the movie. He played a naive brother that’s what it was about he said that in various interviews. I think he did a job playing the naive brother and later on trains and fights line a professional ✌️

Tree kicking - an old Thai boxer, he'd be about 80+ yrs old now, told me that the only reason they kicked trees was that in the old times out in the boondocks, not everyone who fought trained at a somewhere that could afford heavy bags. As soon as they could get their hands on a proper bag the tree kicking stopped.

The bar scene isn't sparring, or his master testing him. The fights are held by local gangsters, and his master is making the point JPVD's a worthy fighter (which he wasn't before), so that they would let him fight. Don't forget (in the movie) that's not exacly sport, forget clubs, tournaments, qualifications etc. Fights are illegal or at least not regulated. "Qualification" is beating local criminals in a bar while drunk. :)

Very fun movie, I loved the old wise coach, but it got surprisingly dark at the end with what Jean Clauds opponent did. I was also dissappointed that with all the training, the final fight is finished off by the guy just standing there and taking Van Dammes punches like a sandbag
@billywashere6965
@billywashere6965 Год назад
Yeah all the training was really cool, but the final fight has rather poor choreography. In fact, Van Damme's training choreography was better than the actual final fight choreography!

It's strange that a few salty Van Damme haters in the comments section act like a bunch of experts! Most people know it's a movie and not real life. Certain things are exaggerated for the movies because that's how it was back in the day.

In all fairness, Xian Chow has another motive to make Van Damme fight all those guys at the bar, besides assessing his skill and progress. He wants to prove a point to the guys who book Tong po's fights. Xian wants the mob guys to see Van Damme embarrass them and show he's a worthy fighter, and make them book a real in-ring fight.
