Welcome to another episode of my Gaggia Classic Mod. In this video, I'm sharing how I did my LED upgrade to light up the water tank. Like many of you Gaggia owners, I've always struggled to check the water level in the tank and when it needs a top-up. So, after gathering some research and searching for the right parts, I managed to pull it off.
Parts:
• LED strip (I'm using warm white temperature because I felt it compliments the machine better)
• Wires for connecting the LED to the Driver
• 220V - 12V LED Driver (Make sure it's stated DC Output)
• Wire cutters, crimping tools
Some chapter markdown from the video:
00:00 Intro
00:08 Parts
00:33 Wiring Diagram
00:47 Teardown
01:39 Installation
04:23 Reveal - Final product
Disclaimer: I'm using this method to add an LED to my water tank with the idea of not having anything permanently made to the machine. I totally understand how unsafe it is to have multiple connectors in a machine.

I installed my LEDs using this vid ! Only thing... At first, the LEDs turned on when I connected the power to the machine instead of when I turned the machine on. Had to switch to the other connector from the on/off-button (with the orange cable in this vid). Many thanks !

This, or something like it, is what I will be doing with my ViaVenezia. The one missing element now is to easily see the water level in that tank.

Hi there. Thanks for the video! Just wondeirng, did you install your LED light (above water tank) towards the front, middle or at the back? Any advice? Thanks!
@EweJinTee
@EweJinTee 11 месяцев назад
It is in the middle spot of the "ceiling" of the water tank. Figured that's the best placement because it can also use the chrome housing as light reflectors :) Cheers

If you do the gaggiuino mods then you can add a ToFnLED which measures the water level and displays it on the touchscreen. Pointless but cool

In the beginning of your video you said to to get 12V DC out for LED Driver. But, in the video, I saw your LED Driver and it says it's 24-36W which is almost 75-135V out. I thought 24-36W would be too high for my 12V LED strip. Is it still okay to use? I was trying to get a 2-7W LED driver cuz the output of it is only 12-26V. Should I get 24-36W one like you or 2-7W for my safety? I'm sorry that I am not that familiar with electricity.

Apologies, I think I grabbed the wrong thumbnail for the parts list at 0:15. When looking for an LED driver, it's important to check the input and output V with regards to where you're located. I'm not too sure about the Wattage though. Based on where I'm at, my power input is 240V and the LED driver transforms it to 12V which basically is suitable for LEDlights. Hope that makes sense :)

@Gunnl
@Gunnl Год назад
@@jeekim1212 just make sure your LED driver (output) provides the Voltage (V) as required by your LED and at least the required Power (Watt)... e.g. if LED requires 12 V, make sure LED driver delivers 12 V .... then if LED requires 7 W power, make sure LED Driver can deliver equal or more, to 7 Watts .... it is OK if power is more, it just means you can drive more LEDs with one LED driver, when the LEDs only require 7 W the LED Driver will limit itself to provide 7 W, however the voltage CANNOT be more or you will burn the LED ... Less voltage is also not good, it might simply not work, or potentially also damage

Hi, if use 220v led, how should we wire it ? Does the polarity matter ?
@EweJinTee
@EweJinTee 6 месяцев назад
Yes, the polarity matters. Make sure to follow the (+) and (-) closely. If your local voltage is 220V then it shouldn't be any issues running a 220V LED. If you're voltage is 110V, best if you double check as I'm no certified technician on this matter. Good luck and safety first!

I live in Canada, and we have 110 v here , where can I find the parts compatible with 110 v
@EweJinTee
@EweJinTee Год назад
Best to search nearby hardware stores or Amazon etc. I guess those will stock up drivers are suitable for local current voltages.

Hi, how about such LED signal/indicator light? Gebildet 5Pcs 8mm 110V-220V AC LED Metal Indicator Light Waterproof Signal Lamp Seems can be connected straight into mains without any adaptor. Not sure if it's bright enough but you don't need a bright light actuualy to see water's level in the tank, right?
@EweJinTee
@EweJinTee Год назад
You can try those and see how it reflects in the water tank. At the end of the day, you will be the one using it to inform the water level. If it works for you, then it should be fine :) Good luck!

@@EweJinTee Hi there, me again. Eventually got me GCP, and eventually started my mods. I've tried, and it works. It's not as bright as yours, but it still helps to assess the water level. Fitted two LEDs into those two smaller holes (8mm in diameter) in the chasis above the water tank. The hoses got squeezed into the bigger hole for the funnel water inlet. It was possible, as I had to attach a silicon extension to the end of the funnel after fitting the top box above.

where did you get the LED from? What wattage was it?

Hey. It's a 12V LED from some random electrical shop. I use a 4K temp for that slight warm look. Before, I tried the white 6K one, didn't like it as it was too bright 😅

Can you please share what model you have? I have the EU version and as such the power button is different, it perhaps makes a difference to wiring...I'm investigating currently as my LEDs didn't light up! Good walkthrough though, thank you for sharing
@PapelEspresso

Helo, There may be a problem due to incorrectly connecting the cables from the leds, secondly, maybe your driver is broken. Most of the ones sold in the market can be defective.

@@PapelEspresso yeah that was my question, but I've compared the US and EU wiring diagrams and light blue is live in the EU version so it should be fine, I'll try again now I know the driver works
@PapelEspresso

@@tomknight The direction of the cables coming to the drive does not change anything. (+, - ) There is only w difference between eu and America. If your system works outside the gaggia, I think you are connecting the cables coming to the driver incorrectly.

I did something similar but found that South African insects (we call them "goggas" - the "g" is pronounced as a guttural "ch" sound) like the LED lights a bit too much. I had a massive moth in my water tank one morning.
@EweJinTee

I think you should switch to warmer light temperatures. Some insects like to go near 'cooler' temp lights. Good luck!

why couldnt you just get AC driven LEDs?
@EweJinTee
@EweJinTee 6 месяцев назад
From my research, AC current are considered 'unstable' as compared to DC. After I fit the AC driver, my LED auto shut off after a while. My guess is that the current in the machine is running on DC and that's why if you fit an AC it will not correspond.
